Part Immersion:Children (in kindergarten through Grade 5 in primary schools, from Grade 6 to Grade 8 in middle schools) learn all subjects in both Chinese and English.
The following chart is provided by Elizabeth Weise from《America Today》.It shows the growth of the immersive schools in America.
Based on The Daily Advertiser's report, foreign children at the age of about 5 are having Chinese lessons like this:
Zhaoting Xia,a 29-year-old teacher, holds paper copies of Chinese currency and invites kids up one at a time to use the"money"to purchase something from her pretend fruit stand.
One of the students,a 5-year-old boy, picks out his money and greets Xia with"ni hao,"starting the conversation as he has been taught. Then he works in some vocabulary words to ask for a plastic ear of corn.Xia tells him the price, and he counts the money in his hand before making the exchange. They finish with"xiexie"or"thank you".

Like many other five-year-olds,Jeanie Low of Houston,Texas, would use a stool (凳子) to help her reach the bathroom sink. However, the plastic step-stool she had at home was unstable and cluttered up the small bathroom shared by her whole family. After learning of an invention contest held by her school that year,Jeanie resolved to enter the contest by creating a stool that would be a permanent fixture in the bathroom, and yet could be kept out of the way when not in use.
Jeanie decided to make a stool attached to the bathroom cabinet door under the sink. She cut a board of wood into two pieces, each about two feet wide and one foot long.Using metal hinges (铰链),Jeanie attached one piece of the wood to the front of the cabinet door, and the second piece to the first. The first piece was set just high enough so that when it swung out horizontally from the cabinet door, the second piece would swing down from the first, just touching the ground, and so serving as a support for the first piece of the wood. This created a convenient, strong platform for any person too short to reach the sink. When not in use,the hinges allowed the two pieces of wood to fold back up tightly against the cabinet, where they were held in place by magnets (磁铁).Jeanie called her invention "the Kiddie Stool".
Jeanie's Kiddie Stool won first place in her school's contest. Two years later,it was awarded first prize again at Houston's first annual Invention Fair.As a result,Jeanie was invited to make a number of public appearances with her Kiddie Stool, and was featured on local TV as well as in newspapers. Many people found the story of the Kiddie Stool inspiring because it showed that with a pair of observant eyes, anyone can be an inventor.

Climbing,I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity,I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock,I am fully present.Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert(警觉的),and hands move across the surface.Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly,in climbing, attentive observation is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature,I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing.Going out on to the crags (悬崖),I saw how you can learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements.Good climbers knew how to map their bodies on to the stone.Watching them,I wanted to possess that skillful language.
My leap happened when I worked for the Cairngorms National Park Authority.Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd.Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal beats.Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements.Through her generous spirit and my own wanderings,I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing yourself against anything.Rather, the intensity of focus could release you into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has changed my view on the world and our place in .I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday.Working with gravity, geology(地质学),rhythms of weather and deep time,I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This connection lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing.I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in touch with our land.
8. Why does the author like climbing? ______
A. It challenges her to compete with men.
B. It allows her a unique attitude toward rock.
C. It teaches her how to possess a new language.
D. It makes her feel connected with the world.
9. What does the writer find important in climbing? ______
A. Balance. B. Concentration. C. Determination. D. Curiosity.
10. What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd? ______
A. Climbing goes together with nature.
B. Every mountain top is within reach.
C. The best climber is the one having fun.
D. You cannot achieve high unless you change.
11. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 5 refer to ? ______
A. Time. B. Contact. C. The world. D. My view.

There may be a reason why astronauts are crazy about the view from space but never mention the food.Astronauts aboard the International Space Station must drink meals out of a plastic squeeze-bag because of zero gravity.Food in space can only be reheated instead of being cooked fresh.Besides, meals for each crew member must be stored in advance and eaten in order. All of this may sound a little difficult to accept.
Therefore,it was one small step for interstellar (星际的) cuisine when U.S.astronaut Megan McArthur recently posted photos of herself holding a pancakes with beef, tomatoes and a fresh hatch chilli (红番椒) grown aboard the International Space Station itself.
"Best space pancakes yet," she shared online.
Pesquet,a French astronaut, posted on Instagram, "It is such a joy to grow (and eat) your own food, and necessary for further exploration of our Solar System." It seems there is a suitcase-sized space garden aboard the ISS (International Space Station) that holds about six "pillows" stuffed with clay and fertilizer, and a LED light.Astronauts have grown several kinds of vegetables including Chinese cabbage and red Russian kale (羽衣甘蓝) in this micro-plot,to test which plants might grow best during a long space voyage.
We called Melva Aguirre, who owns the Pepper Pot in Hatch,N.M.,home of hatch chilli. She says the harvest of their famous local crop in outer space is the talk of the town. "Now the whole universe knows how great our chilli are," she said. When I asked if she could recommend a hatch chilli recipe,Aguirre told me, "Just stuff it." "Stuff it?" I asked, and she laughed and said, "I mean,in your mouth." A recipe even I can follow.
12. What can know about astronauts' eating food in the space station? ______
A. The food is inviting to the astronauts.
B. The food can be cooked in various ways.
C. The astronauts can't have meals as they wish.
D. Astronauts don't care about what they eat in the space station.

14. Why do astronauts grow Chinese cabbage and other vegetables aboard the ISS? ______
A. To kill the spare minutes.
B. To entertain themselves during the voyage.
C. To explore the universe.
D. To test for the plants growing best.
15. What is the best title for the passage? ______
A. Challenges Astronauts Face in Space.

How to survive a stampede
At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede accident that occurred at Itaewon,Seoul,Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
Look for exits
If you are in a crowd,a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. (1) .
Keep an eye on the crowd
(2) ,as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger,a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
(3)
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd do not fight against the pressure,do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled.Move in the same direction of the crowd keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.
Protect your head
If you fall, get up quickly. (4) ,or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up into the fetal position (do not lay on your stomach or back,as this dangerously exposes your lungs).
Move diagonally towards the exit
After you're pushed forward, like in a wave there's a lull(间歇).In that lull is your chance to move, and the way you move is on a diagonal, between pockets of people. There's always space between people.A couple of steps sideways, another wave surge, then another couple of steps in the next lull. (5) .
A.Avoid any choke points
B.Keep pace with the crowd
C.Be aware of the general atmosphere of the crowd
D.You don't want to be knocked unconscious in this scenario
E.You work your way out that way till you get to the periphery(外围)
F.No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out
