【原文】Old people have worked hard all their life and should be shown appreciation and kindness. This idea of appreciating the elderly stayed in my head and I decided it was time to step up an organization to help them. So, in 2013, two years after I entered Orange High School, I founded an organization called Love for the Elderly.
My interest in writing led me to create the organization, where people from all across the globe send letters filled with kindness and joy. I then send these letters to senior centers, nursing homes, and retirement communities located all across the country. Up to now, I have collected over 1,000 letters, and the response I have received from these places has been truly unforgettable.
This past month, I had the opportunity to receive $100 as the prize I won in a contest. This money has been of great help for my organization. We don’t get much money from the government or other organizations, so this money helped to pay for many costs. Next, I plan to set up a food bank for old people in my city.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 — 1827)
Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven never held an official position in Vienna. He supported himself by giving concerts, teaching piano, and the sale of his compositions. The last 30 years of Beethoven’s life were filled with a lot of hard times, the first of which was his deafness. Beethoven’s music greatly influenced the next generation of musicians.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 — 1750)

Seven years later, he moved back to Weimar, where he served as court (宫廷) organist for nine years. His music greatly influenced classical music.
Frederic Chopin (1810 — 1849)
Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland. He showed a talent for the piano at a very young age. Chopin began composing when he was still a child, but some of his early works have been lost. He gave his first public concert in 1818. Chopin was considered as the leading musician of his time.
Franz Schubert (1797 — 1828)

Each morning, opening the door to the factory, I was struck by the strong smell of oil and the noises of machines. My college internship at this large plant involved walking through the factory to get to the engineering offices. I tried to get to my office without slipping or getting my high heels stuck in the old wood flooring.
The head of this crowd would shout and blow the whistle so loudly that everyone would hear and laugh. When this type of thing happened, it was just considered “boys will be boys”, so managers did nothing though they were aware of all this. This whole situation was humiliating, and I began to hate going to the offices.
After a while, I realized that the man with the whistle delighted in embarrassing the ladies. Out of necessity, my idea was born. One morning, as I walked through the factory door and made my way around the machines, he began to blow his whistle. I stopped and turned to face him, looking him directly in the eyes. Surprised, he stopped the whistle.
Breathing deeply, I said aloud, “I just wanted to tell you that I wish you wouldn’t do that. It’s very embarrassing. How would you like it if someone did that to you or one of your family members?”
I think I shocked him, and he looked down. “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again. We were just having fun. My name is Tom,” he said.
I met his gaze but smiled this time. “Let’s be friends from now on.”
Sure enough, the next morning, Tom smiled and waved. I smiled and waved back. We continued to have this happy exchange for the rest of my internship.
24. What struck the author when she went to work?
A. The noises of the machines. B. The shouting of the crowd.
C. The chance of being stuck. D. The worry of the internship.
25. What did the managers think about the situation?
A. They tried but couldn’t stop the men. B. They thought it unnecessary to stop it.
C. They felt it helpful for the author’s growth. D. They knew nothing about the situation.
26. Why did the author begin to hate going to the offices?
A. The work wasn’t productive. B. She hated the noisy machines.
C. The managers didn’t support her. D. She disliked being laughed at.
27. How did the author get along with the man after some lime?
A. They continued to be unfriendly. B. They shared their work experience.
C They exchanged greetings at work. D. They developed good partnership.

On November 18, the world’s first self-driving, electric container (电动集装箱) ship made its first trip to Oslo, Norway.
The ship, called Yara Birkeland, is owned by Yara, a company that makes fertilizer (化肥). The company wanted to develop a ship that wouldn’t pollute the earth and was completely self-driving. The company says that in the future everything, including loading (装载) and unloading the ship, will be done by machines.
The Yara Birkeland can carry 120 large containers like those pulled by trucks. But the ship is fully powered by electricity. The electricity is made by water energy, so there’s no pollution at all.
The Yara Birkeland won’t usually be going to Oslo and will only travel from Yarn’s factory to the port in Brevik.
In the future, as an autonomous ship, the Yara Birkeland is expected to operate without any humans. Yara plans to spend the next two years training and testing the ship.
The Yarn Birkeland will have many challenges. It will be moving in a narrow place. It will have to learn to deal with the changes of the water. The ship will need to pass under two bridges and avoid all the other traffic on the busy water. Finally, it will have to stop at one of the busiest ports in Norway.
The company hopes to solve most of these problems in the next two years. Yarn’s leader, Svein Tore Holsether, thinks that in three to five years, the ship might not even need to have controls that a human could use.
28. What is the advantage of the Yara Birkeland?
A. It runs faster than common ships. B. Fertilizer can be made on it.
C. It can carry the biggest load of products. D. It is environmentally friendly.

A. Self-driving. B. Fast-running. C. Large. D. Powerful.
30. What challenge will the Yara Birkeland meet?
A. It will lose its way. B. It will travel through heavy traffic.
C. It will meet with polluted water. D. It will use up electricity halfway.

A tornado is a disaster; the death and damage it may leave behind is heartbreaking. And while the arrival of a hurricane is known in advance by days of warning, tornadoes strike suddenly. Those in the path of a tornado may have 15 minutes’ warning, if that. That makes safety measures for tornadoes important for survival.
What can you do to protect your family from something like that?
Before a storm
• If you live in an area where tornadoes often strike, consider building a safe room in your home or make a bedroom or bathroom strong enough.
• Pack an emergency preparedness kit (应急箱) that will meet the needs of you and your family for three days. You should put food and water for three days, batteries, first-aid kit, local maps and toilet paper in an emergency preparedness kit. Other things to consider include sleeping bags or blankets, books, puzzles and games for children.
• Pay special attention to weather. Look for the following danger signs: dark, greenish sky, a large, dark cloud, loud noise.
Safety measures during a storm
• In a public building, go to a shelter area such as a safe room, basement or the lowest building level.
• If you’re in a mobile home, get out quickly and go to the lowest floor of a nearby building or a storm shelter.
• If caught in the open, lie down in a lower area and cover your head with your hands.
Safety measures after a storm
• Pay attention to the danger created by tornado damage such as broken glass and broken electrical wire (电线). These are all dangerous.
• Check for injuries, but don’t try to move someone who is seriously injured unless they are in immediate danger of death or further injury.
32. Why does the author speak of a hurricane?
A. To make the topic more attractive.
B. To introduce more natural disasters.
C. To stress a hurricane also causes damage.
D. To show it is important to prepare for a tornado.
33. What should be put in your emergency preparedness kit?
A. A pencil. B. A world map.
C. A battery. D. A phone card.
34. What should people do when a tornado strikes?
A. Stay still when in the office. B. Leave a mobile house at once.
C. Cover your ears if in the open air. D. Prepare an emergency preparedness kit.

How are things going with you? It’s been a while since we wrote to each other, and I’m writing for advice about one thing that has been troubling me. While I’ve tried, I still can’t make much progress in my English study. What frustrates me most is that I can’t seem to memorise those new words, which simply keep escaping my mind. 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house near a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing ?” someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. There’s no telling what could happen if he caught up with us. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.
注意:
(1)所续写短文的词数应为l50左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
“Help! Help! Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph1:
Looking around, we saw a boat floating by the shore. “How about going boating?”Mark asked. “Good idea.”I agreed. I was excited to find so many fishes in the lake. Before I could say a word, Mark had cast the fishing net into the water. “Look this way. Let me take a photo of you two.” Cody said, taking out the camera. Hearing that, I quickly approached Mark. But all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell into the water.
Paragraph 2:
“Help! Help! Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help. However, none of us could swim. Mark and Cody tried to pull me up from the water but failed. Struggling in the water, I was almost exhausted. Suddenly, I felt myself lifted by someone. It was Mark’s neighbor, who followed us there. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and saved me.
如:take a photo of,be excited to do,without hesitation, all of a sudden 等高级词汇;before引导的时间状语从句,Before I could say a word, Mark had cast the fishing net into the water.复合结构等高级句式。
