Academic Club

Media &Publication Club
It focuses on publishing a campus newspaper, creating a website, or writing ads. The skill sets required to successfully create media today are incredibly varied. You may have a passion for the written word or love graphic design.
Community Service Club
If you are eager to make a difference to the world, the club focusing on serving others might be the perfect match for you. If you have a desire to help, the opportunity to serve likely exists on your campus.
Sports& Recreation Club
If you are passionate about the sport you’re pursuing, it does not matter if you aren’t playing at the NCAA level. Club sports are usually not regulated by the rules of the NCAA, but you have chances to travel to other colleges to compete. On my first round-the-world trip in 2006, I planned everything out in advance. I knew where I was going, staying for how long, and how 1 would get there. And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow(随大流). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I’m a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far in advance, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.
However, most new travelers are the opposite — they overplan their trips. Their whole journey is scheduled. Two days here, three days there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don’t want to waste a single second.
Actually, it is better to slow down your pace. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel for the rhythm of life. You can visit at a more relaxed pace, see more than just the attractions, and open up your schedule to the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic, and revised my plan. I came up with a list of one or two things I want to see each day and spaced everything out. It’s an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.

A.In Travel, Less Is More B.Why I Enjoy Traveling Around

What do you think of when you hear the word “drought”: Do you think of “dry” “hot” “dusty” “cracked earth” or even “no water”? If so, you’re on the right track!
When some places are in drought, they may be dry, hot and dusty. Cracks may appear in the soil, and rivers, lakes, streams and other sources of water may go dry. Other places in drought get some rain, but not as much as they usually receive during that season. Drought means that a place has less rain or snow than normal over a few months or even longer.
Drought has many causes. It can be caused by not receiving rain or snow over a period of time. We learned in the discussions above about the water cycle and weather. The changes in the wind patterns that move clouds and moisture through the atmosphere can cause a place not to receive its normal amount of rain or snow over a long period of time.
If you live in a place where most of the water you use comes from a river, a drought in your area can be caused by places upstream from you not receiving enough moisture. There would be less water in the river for you and other people who live along the river to use.
People can also play a big role in a drought. If we use too much water during times of normal rainfall, we might not have enough water when a drought happens.
28.What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic B.To analyze the problem
C.To conclude the article D.To put forward an argument
29.What will happen if a place is in drought?
A.The weather will be dry, hot and windy.
B.There won’t be any water left in rivers or lakes.
C.There will be less rain or snow for quite a long time.
D.The rainy season will be replaced by the snowy season.
30.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “moisture” in Paragraph 3?
A.Dust in the wind B.Rain in the soil C.Snow on the ground D.Water in the air
31.What topics are discussed before the passage?
A.The definition (定义) of drought B.The water cycle and weather
C.The causes of drought D.The influence of drought

Experts analyzed how language can impact children’s lives and the role it plays in everyday life. They also determined which languages tend to lead to the best career opportunities as an adult. “We believe that language learning is hugely beneficial for children’s development and it’s a real investment for the future,” said Antonella Sorace, professor of developmental Linguistics and director of offinguatlsm matters at Edinburgh University. The study involved a survey of 2,001 parents with children under the age of 18, along with another survey of more than 500 business leaders.
So which languages took the top spot? Results indicated that children should be learning French, German, and/or Mandarin if they want to be successful within the next ten years. Proficiency in a second language opens the door to new markets for businesses and allows them to create new relationships with potential partners. Aside from being able to speak another language, the academic and interpersonal skills that can be gained from learning a new language are important as well. “Children who are exposed to different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people, and other points of view. They also tend to be better than monolinguals at multitasking and are often more advanced readers,”said Sorace.
A vast majority of parents surveyed in this study (85 percent) believe it is important for their children to learn a second language, and about one in four believe it will increase their child’s career opportunities and boost employability. The future employment market are in need of space tour guide, robot coach, frontline e-commerce worker, nurse practitioner etc. No matter what a child choose to be, multilinguals and cross-culture talents will probably stand a good chance to take the lead. However, 45 percent of parents surveyed admit that their child or children cannot speak a second language.
If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, brush up on the habits of parents of successful people — give children chores, set high but realistic expectations, get yourself educated, make time for bonding, accept and recognize their feelings — and, of course, make sure they learn one of the three success languages!
32.What is Antonella Sorace’s attitude towards different languages learning? ________
A.Critical. B.Neutral. C.Positive. D.Enthusiastic.
33. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us concerning the advantages of learning different languages?
A.It can improve children’s academic and social skills.
B.It makes children multilinguals and advanced readers.
C.It makes it possible for them to earn a fortune in future.
D.It benefits children in development and cultural exposure.
34.Which job will be the most favorable in the future, according to the passage ? ________
A.Delivery man. B.News reporter.
C.Local experience guide. D.Self-driving car designer.
35.What’s the purpose of the passage ? ________
A.To teach the ways of learning foreign languages.
B.To share the secret of becoming successful parents.
C.To show the importance of learning foreign languages.
D.To introduce the methods of raising successful children.

M: Yes, and this apartment is in good condition. Here is your lounge.
W: Where would we eat?
M: There is this corner here, or you can use your kitchen. Come and see.
W: The kitchen is quite small.
M: Yes, but it has everything, cooker, fridge, even a dishwasher.
W: And there are lots of cupboards.
M: Let me show you the bedrooms. This is the smaller one.
W: It’s a good size, though.
M: Now come into the other bedroom. You can see the bathroom, too.
W: Yes, it is very nice. But I will have to ask my friend first, and we will come together. I understand it is $800 a month.
M: Yes, but a few blocks downtown would be much more expensive.
W: Well, thank you. I will be in touch.

W: Trees are pretty important to the environment. So it makes sense that if you chop down too many of these and don’t replace them, and you’re going to run into all sorts of problems. The Philippines knows all about that. It’s lost more than two thirds of its forest area in less than a hundred years. In 2003, a slide of a large mass of dirt and rock down a mountain or cliff, or we call a landslide, killed around two hundred people. Recently another landslide buried an entire village in mud. It’s believed more than one thousand people died. The cause of this landslide is still being debated. Most say it was the heavy rainfall. I mean we’re talking about two thousand millimeters of rain in ten days that’s quite a downpour. Some say a minor earthquake played a part, while others blamed the removal of trees. Of course, it could be a combination of all those things. While the Philippines banned chopping down trees for several years, it started again in 2005. Partly because the Philippines population is growing at a rapid rate, so the land is needed for housing and farming. So how do you support the increasing population without ruining the environment? Grow more plantations—forests, which are for commercial use. And don’t destroy our native’s forests.

And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow(随大流).Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I’m a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.(2006年我第一次环球旅行时,我提前计划好了一切。

I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.(没有计划的旅行给了你很大的灵活性。
根据最后一段最后两句“I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold from there. 27.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段中“When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic, and revised my plan. I came up with a list of one or two things I want to see each day and spaced everything out.(当我第一次制定旅行计划时,我试着把所有的东西都包括进去。后来我意识到这是不现实的,于是修改了我的计划,我列出了一张清单,上面列出了我每天想看的一两件事,把每件事都隔开了,这是我要学习的重要一课。)”以及文中阐述的无计划旅行和慢旅行的优点,可知作者认为在旅行中不要把所有的事情都计划在内,日程安排不必太多,否则会减少很多旅行的乐趣。所以A选项“In Travel, Less Is More(在旅行中,少即是多)可以概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选A。

根据第二段最后一句“Drought means that a place has less rain or snow than normal over a few months or even longer.(干旱是指一个地方在几个月甚至更长时间内的雨雪比正常情况少。)”
根据画线词下文的“cause a place not to receive its normal amount of rain or snow(导致一个地方没有正常的雨雪量)”可知,画线词所在句描述了降水不足的原因,风带走了空气中的水分,从而导致降水减少,moisture意为“空气中的水分”,和water in the air意思相近,故选D。
