When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life.
I was a total outsider, bullied(欺凌)at school. I felt completely alone in my Small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping
others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more
positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life
would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The
kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author
so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic,
positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the
authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am
grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.

With the development of our society, cellphones have become a common part in our lives. Have you
ever run into a careless cellphone user in the street? Maybe they were busy talking, texting or checking
updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new "species"
of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name—phubbers (低头族).
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone's life.
You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an
architect of positive change.
Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of
people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their
phones. A doctor plays with his cellphone while letting his patient die. A pretty woman takes a selfie (自拍)
in front of a car accident site. And a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile
phone. A chain of similar events will finally lead to the destruction(毁灭) of the world.
Although the ending of the film sounds unrealistic, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health
is the first to bear the effect and the result of it. "Always bending your head to check your cellphone could
damage your neck," Guang Ming Daily quoted doctors' words. "The neck is like a rope that breaks after
long-term stretching." Also, staring at cellphones for a long time will damage your eyesight gradually,
according to the report.
25. What was the author's life like when he was 12?
A. Boring.
B. Peaceful.

C. It helped him understand others' lives better.
27. Why did the author choose writing as his job?
A. He was inspired by his teacher.
B. It helped him find the meaning of life.
D. It helped to shape his dream career.
B. He could pass positive energy to readers.
D. He found he had a talent for writing.
C. He wanted to share his school experiences.
28. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A. Say 'no' to bullies bravely.
B. Make positive changes in their lives.
C. Treat others with kindness in daily life.
D. Learn to care more about others' feelings
But that's not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your
friends and family. When getting together with family or friends, many people prefer to play their cellphones
while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News
reported.

Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. This outdoor activity gives us beautiful plants,
pleasant smelling flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. And it also does a lot of good to our health.
Gardening connects people. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect chance to meet
and spend time with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and gardeners are not
different. They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and
stories about their gardens almost as much as sharing flowers and vegetables from their gardens.
Gardening is a great activity for children. It gets them outdoors and off computers, televisions and cell
phones. Gardening is also a great teacher. It can teach a child about where food comes from and healthy
eating. It also helps them to understand that the natural resources(资源)are not endless and the importance of
using them carefully.
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered
accidents, and were robbed of their cellphones in broad daylight.

34.According to the passage, what risks may a phubber have?

③ Damaging his neck and eyesight.④ Getting separated from his friends and family.
A.①②④ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②③④
35.What's the author's attitude towards phubbing?
Then, when you garden, you must move around. All the different movements needed for gardening, like
bending and lifting, work small muscles(肌肉)in the body. And you can easily get good exercise when you

A study, researchers looked at more than 2, 800 people over the age of 60. They studied their lifestyle

An English saying goes: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” That means we should relax after
a day’s hard work or we’ll be unhealthy.
Many students know that if they want to get ideal jobs with good salaries, they must do well in high
school so they can enter good universities. Therefore, they spend all day studying without time to relax.
However, not all students can go to top universities even if they work very hard. Students are
pressurized(加压) by parents and teachers who are just concerned about their studies and exam scores while
ignoring their hobbies and individual differences. As a result, students are forced to work harder and harder.
Furthermore, there is pressure coming from students themselves. They realize they have a slim chance of
getting into a top university as competition is fierce. So, they put a lot of stress on themselves and stay in a
nervous state day after day. If they keep it up, they’ll suffer illnesses; both psychological and physical.
What students need is relaxation. This doesn’t mean that they should give up their ambitions and stop
studying hard. It means “work while you work, play while you play”. If you can do this, you will improve
your health greatly. You’ll feel yourself suddenly fresh, just like recovering from a terrible illness. You’ll find
that your studies are not a burden anymore.
B.Turn to others for assistance.
C.Now, this doesn’t mean going back to school.
D.Here are some simple steps to improve yourself and your life .
E.You’ll change a lot when experiencing different ways people live.
F.This can be hard to do sometimes, but it really can help inspire others.
G.This lets you contribute to the world while also changing how you look at things.
