After high school English teacher Larry Abrams started his teaching career in a far suburb outside of Philadelphia, he found he taught in a book desert (荒漠). Many of the kids in school simply struggled (挣扎) with reading and then writing .
In 2017, when one of his students told him she had no book to read to her 2-year-old daughter, Abrams took action. He put forward a call to friends and family asking for gently used children’s books, and in no time, he had more than 1, 000 of them. He began handing out the books to young moms and local elementary schools. That was the start of his nonprofit, BookSmiles, which has since collected, sorted, and handed out hundreds of thousands of books throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area — and will soon reach 1 million.
BookSmiles calls on people to help collect books and drop them off in the group’s large collection boxes, which are painted with literary-themed artwork and put outside local businesses, houses of worship, schools, and people’s homes. Books are often handed out through teachers, who come to the book bank and choose as many books as they want.
Larry Abrams thinks children should be read to because it’s something joyful that creates a bond (纽带) between the parent and the child in such an important way. Reading books creates a moment that will never die off and always stay with the child. And what’s more, reading books to kids gives them power. The most important tool that they get is words. There are some kids who grow up hearing lots of words because they’re read to every single night. They are used to hearing sentences connected together when they’re babies. And then there are other kids who never get that. Reading and books help level that playing field. It gives words, millions of words, to these babies who really, really need them.
24. What did Larry Abrams find about his working environment?
A He had to live a hard life in a desert.
B. His students were very short of books.
C. His students couldn’t read or write at all.
D. His school was struggling to make ends meet.
25. What caused Larry Abrams to set up BookSmiles?
A. His student’s trouble. B. His school’s requirement.
C. His daughter’s need for books. D. His close friend’s request.
26. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. What books BookSmiles hands out. B. Where BookSmiles’s boxes are.
C. How busy BookSmiles’s workers are. D. How BookSmiles works.
27. What does Larry Abrams think of reading to children?
A. It helps parents and children to kill time.
B. It makes children depend more on their parents.
C. It puts children far ahead of those without being read to.
D. It develops children’s language skills by parent-child behavior.
【答案】24 B 25. A 26. D 27. D

Lac Rose in Senegal about 30 kilometers northeast of Dakar, is the highest salinity(盐度) lake in the world. Much higher salinity is what gives the lake its famous pink color that changes from a slightly rose pink in the rainy season into a super bright pink during the dry season when salinity is at its highest.
The high salt content draws the salt harvesters(收获者)to its banks . First, to protect their skin from the salt, they put a kind of natural vegetable fat on their bodies before entering the water. Using a wooden tool, they drag the salt into the basket made from reeds(a kind of plant).
There are three different kinds of salt. There’s a type of very powdery salt that is only gathered during the Harmattan when the western winds blow from the Sahara over West Africa every year. As the finest or highest grade of salt, the powdery salt is used mainly for cooking. The second type of salt is rougher and always present at the bottom of the lake. This type of salt is generally used for general cooking. Sometimes it is even used for building roads. The third type of salt is the roughest kind that people prefer for their beauty treatments. To harvest this type of salt, salt harvesters put some wood to the bottom of the lake and over time, big salt crystals(晶体)begin to form on them.
Lac Rose is considered as a world heritage site and the local(当地的)people are willing to share their beauty . The healthy, natural regulation(制度)of the use of the natural resources of this lake is one of the most impressive aspects of the community surrounding this lake. There are no laws needed to protect it. Everyone takes a little bit of what they need and nothing more. There is enough for everyone in the local community. It is a good example of the power of mutual respect and trust in local community.
28. What causes the change of the lake’s pink color?
A. The temperature of the water. B. The salinity of the lake.
C. The height above sea level. D. The height of the sun.
29. What can we know about the salt harvesters?

The giant African land snail (an animal) has returned to Florida for a third time. The foreign species (物种) was first found in the state in 1969. It took seven years and $1 million to get rid of (清除) them . They reappeared in 2011 and were wiped out in 2021 at a cost of $23 million. On June 23, 2022, Florida officials reported that the snails had been found in the New Port Richey area of Pasco County.
To stop the snails from spreading to other areas, officials have asked Pasco County people to avoid moving any soil or yard waste and to report any sightings to a special hotline. Specially- trained dogs have also been brought in to find the snails. The areas where the snails have been found will be treated with special chemicals for 18 months. Florida officials also intend to monitor (监测) the sites for two years after the last snail has been found .
The various measures to get rid of the snails may seem too strict for most people. However, the giant African land snails are one of the most dangerous snails in the world. Without these measures, the result will be serious. The fist-sized snails are native to East Africa but can also be found in Hawaii and the Caribbean. They eat over 500 plant and tree species. While they prefer to eat fruits and vegetables, the animals are not picky. They will eat any plant! The animals also bring a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause brain damage. The snails produce about 1, 200 eggs in a single year. This makes it stiff to control their population.
The officials are not sure how the snails got here this time, but they are confident the state will eventually get rid of them, because agriculture is such an important part of the economy in the state.
32. What are locals of Pasco County required to do with the snails?
A. Kill the snails they find. B. Keep dogs off the snails.
C. Report if finding the snails. D. Put the snails into earth.
33. How may the author like the measures to get rid of the snails?
A. Simple. B. Cost-saving. C. Necessary D. Out-of-date
34. What does the underlined word “stiff” in paragraph 3 mean?
A Possible. B. Hard. C. Interesting. D. Dangerous
35. What can be learned about the giant African land snail in Florida?
A. It can’t be easily dealt with. B. It is one of the native species.
C. It came with some tourists. D. It will spread all over the US.

Mistakes I Made While Trying To Lose Weight
In this article, I’m going to share with you several mistakes I made on my quest to lose weight.
I started to skip (略过) breakfast. Most people trying to lose weight believe simply eating less and skipping meals can help get rid of the fat. ___36___ And in fact, breakfast is easily burnt throughout the day.
I bought diet food. When I went shopping, I always looked for the foods marked diet, low-fat, healthy, etc. ___37___ I bought these foods because in my mind it meant I could buy more. I would totally pay no attention to the amount of the food. If you eat too much any food, you’re not doing yourself any favors.
___38___ Eating salad is a good way of keeping my calorie (热量) intake down. But I found that only a moment after my meals, I was looking for more food. I learnt that I was better off eating a balanced meal with few more calories than simply eating a salad and snacking afterwards.
I was too awkward to go to the gym. Joining a gym was one of the hardest things I ever did. I was always worried that people in the gym would be staring at me and talking about me. I really thought I was too fat to join. My advice is to join a gym! ___39___
I set my goals too high. Setting long-term goals is great, but these goals always seem too far off. You need to set smaller, more reachable goals. ___40___ Set yourself weekly and monthly goals.
Once you meet one short-term goal, set a new one for next week.
A. But I was buying these foods for the wrong reason.
B. I thought I’d always be fat.
C. I promise you’ll be glad you do.
D. But it doesn’t keep you full for long.
E. I started eating salads as main meals.
F. However, if so, you’re much more likely to eat more for lunch.
G. So you can achieve them now and then and cheer yourself up.
【答案】36. F 37. A 38. E 39. C 40. G
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了作者在减肥过程中犯的错误。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Most people trying to lose weight believe simply eating less and skipping meals can help get rid of the fat.(大多数试图减肥的人认为,只要少吃和不吃饭就可以帮助摆脱脂肪)”再根据本文是说的作者犯的错误,所以接下来应该讲述,不吃早餐对减肥的坏处,所以F项“However, if so, you’re much more likely to eat more for lunch.(然而,如果是这样的话,你午餐很可能会吃得更多)”符合文意。故选F项。
【37题详解】
根据本段首句“I bought diet food.(我买了减肥食品)”可知,本段主要讲述了买减肥食品是错误的,在根据前文“When I went shopping, I always looked for the foods marked diet, low-fat, healthy, etc. (当我去购物时,我总是寻找标有减肥、低脂、健康等字样的食品)”以及后文“I bought these foods because in my mind it meant I could buy more. I would totally pay no attention to the amount of the food.(我买这些食物是因为在我看来,这意味着我可以买更多。我完全不会注意食物的数量)”可知,空处应是转折,讲述买减肥食品的错误,所以A项“But I was buying these foods for the wrong reason.(但我买这些食物的原因是错误的)”符合文意。故选A项。
【38题详解】
分析设空可知,空处位于段首,是本段的中心句,讲述自己犯的另一个错误,所以根据后文“Eating salad is a good way of keeping my calorie intake down. But I found that only a moment after my meals, I was looking for more food.(吃沙拉是降低卡路里摄入的好方法。但我发现,仅仅在我吃完饭后的片刻,我就在寻找更多的食物)”可知,本段主要讲吃沙拉的问题,所以E项“I started eating salads as main meals.(我开始把沙拉作为主食)”符合文意,其中salad为同词复现。故选E项。
【39题详解】
根据本段首句“I was too awkward to go to the gym..(我太尴尬了,不敢去健身房)”可知,本段主要讲我不敢去健身房的错误,再根据前文“My advice is to join a gym!(我的建议是加入健身房)”可推知,接下来应该讲述这么做的好处,所以C项“I promise you’ll be glad you do.(我保证你会很高兴的)”符合文意。故选C项。
【40题详解】
根据本段首句“I set my goals too high.(我的目标定得太高了)”可知,本段主要讲述了制定目标上的错误,再根据前文“You need to set smaller, more reachable goals.(你需要设定更小、更容易实现的目标)”可知,后文应解释为什么这么设定目标,所以G项“So you can achieve them now and then and cheer yourself up.(所以你可以时不时地实现它们,让自己高兴起来)”符合文意。故选G项。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Easton retired(退休) as a school teacher, and he didn’t have enough savings. What’s worse, his wife, Cassandra, had heart disease that needed expensive treatment.
To save his wife’s life, Easton didn’t have a choice but to take up a job, and he found one as a pizza delivery(递送) man at Rooster’s Pizza. On his first day on the job, his co-workers judged him because the sight of an 84-year-old pizza delivery man was undoubtedly a rare one. But Easton didn’t care.
After delivering the first two orders that day, Easton was on his way to deliver the third one, when he realized his car was low on gas. He stopped at a gas station, worried he would be late for his next delivery. Determined to make it on time, Easton grabbed the steering wheel and drove as fast as he could. However, as he reached one of the main roads, a police car stopped him.
When Officer Jenkins and Officer Matthew walked up to Easton’s car, they were shocked to see an 84-year-old behind the wheel of a pizzeria car. Moreover, they didn’t expect an old man to be speeding.
“You see,” Easton said nervously, “I am running late for pizza delivery. We have a policy of delivering pizza within 45 minutes, or I’ll have to pay for it out of my pocket, and I need money for my wife’s treatment. I hope you understand…”
Officer Matthew looked at Easton’s teary eyes and trembling hands and felt deeply sad for him. However, he couldn’t go against his line of duty. They had to give him a ticket anyway. Easton was late for the delivery that day, prompting his manager to deduct(扣除) it from his salary. He was also warned that he would have to leave if he repeated the mistake.
Not losing heart, Easton set out for his deliveries the following day. “Rooster’s Pizza!” he shouted as he rang the doorbell of one of the houses on his list.
注意:1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When the door opened, Easton recognized his customer was Officer Matthew! He handed the pizza and was about to leave when Officer Matthew stopped him and approached him with an envelope. “We were able to raise a modest sum for your wife’s treatment, sir. It’s only $2,340,but I’m hoping it’ll help. Last night, I thought about how I was unwilling to give the ticket to you, but that’s our line of duty, sir. I spoke to your boss, and he agreed that your pay wouldn’t be deducted. Take care of your wife, and I appreciate the pizza!” Officer Matthew smiled and went inside.
Easton couldn’t believe what had just happened and was surprised by what Officer Matthew did for him. With trembling hands, he opened the envelope and found several dollar bills and a note that read: “Our duty is to protect and serve, but we are still humans at the end of the day. Have a wonderful day!” His eyes filled with tears, Easton rang the doorbell and thanked Officer Matthew again. Then he got into his car and drove away.
