Sixth formers are to be quizzed on whether they can cook five hot meals and how often they should change their sheets, as part of a government-backed scheme(计划)to prepare them for university.
Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16―18 to ensure they feel comfortable with the prospect of leaving home. The course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach pupils how to manage their finances and how to live independently.
According to the course materials, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as “what is the price of a liter of milk?” and “list 5 hot meals you can cook from scratch” and “how often will you wash your sheets once you move out of home?”
Damian Hinds, the Education Secretary, said, “We are all very conscious that moving away from home and going to university is one of the most exciting things that happens in your life but it can also be very disappointing.” Mr. Hinds said that when he got to university, he discovered he had “relied on my mum more than I realized I did”, adding, “I wish I could have cooked better.”
Earlier this year, ministers set up a new task force called the Education Transitions Network, which includes representatives from Universities UK, UCAS and the National Union of Students. It is part of a drive by the Department for Education to address the rise in students who report mental health issues during their time at university.
Data released earlier this year showed that the number of students declaring mental health problems on arrival at university has surged. Just when you thought you were taking care of your health by eating enough fruit and vegetables every day, new research has come out revealing that you might be swallowing microplastic particles(颗粒)along with all those vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A groundbreaking study published in the journal Environmental Research has found that fruits and vegetables absorb microplastic particles from the soil and move them through vegetal tissues, where they remain until eaten by hungry diners, thus getting transferred to human bodies.
The researchers, who are from the University of Catania in Italy, as well as Sousse and Monastir universities in Tunisia, analyzed a variety of common fruits and vegetables — carrots, lettuce, broccoli, potatoes, apples, and pears. These were chosen for the fact that they are frequently consumed, usually one per day, which allowed the researchers to better assess the dietary intakes of MPs (microplastic particles) and NPs (nano-plastics). The samples were purchased from different sources in the city of Catania, including a small fruit vendor and a supermarket.
The researchers found that apples, followed by pears, were the most polluted fruit samples, and carrots were the most polluted vegetable. In the study’s discussion section, the authors wrote, “We can assume that the fruits contain more MPs not only because of the very high vascularization(血管化) of the fruit pulp(果肉)but also due to the greater size and complexity of the root system and age of the tree (several years) compared to the vegetables (60–75 days for the carrot).”
This study is important because it’s the first to detect microplastics in fruits and vegetables. They have been found in other sources before, such as sea salt, beer, water (bottled, in particular), shellfish, sugar, soil, and even air, but never inside fresh produce. It’s an alarming discovery that raises yet another red flag about microplastic pollution in the natural environment.
It’s an area that will likely see a lot more attention in coming years, with the study authors calling for further research into the question of microplastic and whether it harms the health of both plants and humans.
32. What is the study mainly about?
A. The main cause of soil pollution.
B. The great changes in people’s diets.
C. The benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.
D. The microplastic pollution in fruits and vegetables.
33. What may cause fruits to contain more MPs according to the authors?
A. The age of humans.
B. The great size of fruit tree roots.
C. The complex preservation method.
D. The large amounts of the fruit pulp.
34. What makes the study quite special?
A. It showed the influences of MPs on plants.
B. It proved the source of microplastic pollution.
C. It presented the danger of MPs to human’s body.
D. It discovered MPs in fresh produce for the first time.
35. What do the study authors think of the research on microplastic?
A. It needs to be further studied. B. It wasted them quite a lot of time.
C. It has raised people’s awareness of health. D. It has attracted people’s attention to diets.

Peter must be dancing, shaking the whole room. I sat up suddenly and shouted out to my little brother above me, “Stop shaking the bed, would you?”In the meantime, he was saying, “It's not me. It's you.”
Seconds later, Mum rushed into our room with an extra worried face and a crying baby in her arms, screaming to us to run out of the house. By then I found things were flying everywhere. The bookshelf fell on the ground. “What's happening?” I was thinking. Peter was too scared to move. All of a sudden, I completely woke up and realized what was going on was the first earthquake I had experienced in my life. I grabbed a blanket from the bed, dragged Peter down, and left on foot in a flash.
In a second, I was shirtless and shoeless in the street with my neighbors, being thrown back and forth by the ground that seemed to turn to liquid. The tremble I felt from beneath the earth was like a truck passing or the subway moving underneath. The house swung and twisted as if it were made of paper. As we all stood in the street, some tried to call their family and friends but the networks broke down, and they couldn’t get through to anyone. People were hugging each other, anxiously trying to reach their loved ones or sweeping in panic.
The chaos and noise kept growing when we sensed the smell of gas floating in the air. A woman in the crowd pointed to the front gate of a small house with a courtyard and a gated entrance. Obviously, it was close to collapsing, as glass and pieces of concrete rained down on the sidewalk. “Shut the gas and turn off the electricity. There's a leak!” shouted the woman. It was our house. Mom must have been cooking just then and forgot the gas when the earthquake struck.
Paragraph l: No time to hesitate, I hurried back in, leaving Mom and Peter frozen where they were. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: When I came out and joined my family, everything seemed to stop shaking. __________

Good morning, everyone! It is my great honor to be here, giving a speech about food saving. As is known to all, food is the first necessity in our life, without which we would starve to death.
However, a large number of people are suffering from hunger nowadays. To ease the situation, we should take immediate measures to stop food waste. When eating at home, we should prepare a proper amount of food and make full use of it. When dining out, never should we order too much. If any, it is wise to take leftovers home. More importantly, it is urgent that we should raise our awareness of food saving and make it a habit to stop wasting food.
Food saving is something worth trying. I appeal to everyone to take action. Your participation is highly appreciated.
读后续写
No time to hesitate, I hurried back in, leaving Mom and Peter frozen where they were. Having been badly damaged by the earthquake, our house was in a terrible mess. In front of the kitchen door was a fallen pillar, which made it hard for me to enter, not to mention shutting the gas. What's even worse was that our house was shaking violently, striking a mixture of fear and nervousness into my heart. It occurred to me that the longer I hesitated, the more dangerous the situation would become. So I took a deep breath, gathered all my strength and strode over the pillar into the kitchen, turning off the gas and electricity before any unexpected consequences came up.
When I came out and joined my family, everything seemed to stop shaking. Everywhere I looked nearly everything was destroyed. Some people were crying beside their injured family members anxiously, waiting for rescue. Mom rushed towards me, choking, her eyes brimming with tears. Did you get hurt? I'm so worried about you! I'm fine, and I've turned off the gas and electricity." I smiled, gently patting her on the shoulder to comfort her. Suddenly, there arrived several buses and trucks. It was soldiers and doctors sent by the government that came to the rescue, who also brought large quantities of relief supplies. People all burst into cheers. After all, all hope was not lost.

听力录音稿
(Text 1)
M: Let’s go to the cinema on Thursday evening. American Story is good.
W: That’s finished. There’s Fast Life, but it’s not very good. There’s another film about music, Summer Rock.
M: Let’s get tickets for that.
(Text 2)
W: Hi, Peter. Are we still getting together on Saturday?
M: Let me see … Jack and I are going to my grandparents’ on Saturday afternoon, but let’s have dinner together that night. Shall we meet at the restaurant?
W: No, just come over to my house. I’ll tell Linda.
M: All right.
(Text 3)
W: Did you have fun at the celebration?
M: Yes. It was great. People gathered together in colorful clothes to give all kinds of performances.
(Text 4)
W: Hi, Jack. I’m told that you met with a fire accident last week.
M: Bad news has wings. Our ship doesn’t damage badly, but I was a little scared.
W: Come on. Tell me more.
(Text 5)
M: Good morning. I’ve just arrived and I haven’t got my student ID.
W: Then you can’t borrow books, but you can do some reading here.
(Text 6)
W: Excuse me, sir.
M: Yes?
W: I’m sorry to bother you, but this bus is non-smoking. Could you please put out your cigarette? The signs on the windows show quite clearly. The other passengers are complaining.
M: Can’t I just open a window?
W: I’m sorry, sir, if you want to smoke, you must get off now.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Cindy. I hear you have got a new job.
W: Yeah. I’m teaching math at Lincoln High School.
M: How do you like it?
W: It’s pleasant. The students are great. How are things with you?
M: Not bad. I’m an air traffic controller now, you know.
W: Wow! That’s exciting.
M: Yes. But it’s a very stressful job.
(Text 8)
M: I’m sorry, I’m late again. ⑩The traffic was terrible.
W: Well, that’s OK. But the schoolmaster wants to see you. He asked about you this morning.
M: Oh, that’s too bad. I am going to see him now.
W: You’d better go and see him after 10:00. He isn’t in his office. He is having a meeting in the meeting room now.
M: To tell the truth, Mrs. Wilson, I don’t want to be late. ⑩But you see, the traffic is always so heavy. How can I not be late?
W: You should get up earlier.
M: It’s no use. Every time the alarm clock rings, I stop it. You know, it’s difficult for me to wake up that early.
W: Why don’t you buy a bike? That would be faster.
M: I guess so.
(Text 9)
M: 669872.
W: Oh, hello. I’m ringing about the guitar you have for sale. Can you tell me how old it is?
M: Well, I bought it from a friend about six months ago, and he’d got it for his birthday, so it’s about eleven months old now.
W: How much are you selling it for?
M: I think I’d like two hundred pounds for it. I bought it for five hundred.
W: Sounds good. Can I come and see it?
M: Sure. I live at 60, Kensal Road.
W: Can I walk there from High Street?
M: It’s probably best if you get a bus. The number eighteen bus stops in my road outside number seventy. And there’s a subway station, but it’s a bit farther from my house.
W: My name is Jenny Levine and you are …?
M: Josh Bentley.
W: I’m free tonight. Would you be at home at 8 o’clock?
M: I don’t get back from work until eight. Maybe …
(Text 10)
M: Are zoos necessary, or are they only bad to the animals? This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts. Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted too much and left in their native land. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild. Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modern zoos are designed very closely to the natural environment. One of their strongest arguments is that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled killing but can give babies under protection and in that way they may be saved from dying out. OK, that’s all from me and you’re expected to express your opinions on this question next class.
