The potato is thought to have been brought to England from the New World in the 17th century. Both Lancashire and London say they were the first to invent the fried(油炸的)potato chip. In 1839 Charles Dickens referred to a “fried fish warehouse” in his novel, Oliver Twist. People soon decided that putting fried fish and chips together was very tasty and so was born the national dish of fish and chips!
The first fish and chip shop in the North of England is thought to have opened in Mossley, near Oldham, Lancashire, around 1863. However in London, it is said that Joseph Malin opened a fish and chip shop in Cleveland Street in 1860.
Fish and chip shops were small family businesses at first by the late 19th century. Through the latter part of the 19th century and well into the 20th century, the fish and chip trade expanded to satisfy the needs of the growing industrial population of Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was fuelled(加燃料)partly by fish and chips! The development of the steam fishing boat brought fish from all over the North Atlantic, Iceland and Greenland and the steam railways allowed easy and fast distribution(分配)of the fish around the country.
Fish and chips became so important to the diet(饮食)of the common man and woman that one shop in Bradford had to ask a doorman to control the long line at busy times during 1931. The fish and chip shop was invaluable in the Second World War, as fish and chips were among the few foods not to be limited(限制). Queues were often hours long when the word went round that the chip shop had fish!!
In 1999, the British used up nearly 300 million servings of fish and chips. There are now around 8,500 fish and chip shops across the UK, making British Fish and Chips the nationˈs favourite takeaway.

- What led to the fish and chip trade developing quickly by the late 19th century?
A. The development of family businesses.
B. The success of Charles Dickens.
C. The development of industry.
D. The popularity of chips.
26.What was the situation of the fish and chips during the Second World War?
A. It was very expensive. B. It was given out for free.
C. It could be got without limit. D. It disappeared from peopleˈs diet.
27. How is this text mainly developed?
A. By discussing causes. B. By telling a true story.
C. By comparing facts. D. By following the time order.
A robotic suit controlled by the human mind has allowed a man to walk and move his arms for the first time in two years. It was worn by a 28-year-old French man called Thibault. He was unable to move his body below the shoulders. Thibault said his first steps in the suit “felt like the first man on the Moon”. This is the first time signals(信号)from the brain have been used to control a robot suit in this way. Since 2017, Thibault has worked with scientists from the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital in France to create a robotic suit. The suit is a type of exoskeleton, which means that it supports the body from outside, rather than inside. It weighs about 65
kilograms and is tied to the ceiling(天花板)to reduce the risk of falling.
First of all, the scientists had to place two implants(植入物)on the surface of Thibaultˈs brain, on the parts that control movement. Each implant has 64 electrodes(电极). The electrodes pick up brain signals and send them to a computer, which translates these brain signals into instructions that tell the robot suit how it should move. Thibaultˈs movements in the suit are not very fast, and if the suit was not tied to the ceiling, it would not have quick enough reactions(反应)to stop itself from falling over. Therefore, at the moment, the suit can only be used in the laboratory.
When Thibault mentioned the feeling of the experience, he said, “When you are in my position, and canˈt do anything with your body, you want to do something with your brain. The hardest part for me was learning to use my arms again. It was very difficult. Still it was the most impressive thing Iˈve done.”
Scientists say they will continue to develop the robotic suit to make its movements quicker. Dr. Ravi Vaidyanathan of Imperial College London told the New Scientist magazine the work was “groundbreaking”. He said, “It has a long way to go before it can be widely used, but this is an important step.”
28.What can we learn about the robot suit from the first paragraph?
A. It was made because of Thibaultˈs accident. |
B. It controls the body from the inside. |
C. It is controlled by its userˈs thoughts. |
D. It was invented by a French man. |
29.What role do the electrodes play?
A. Controlling computers. | B. Translating brain signals. |
C. Speeding up body movements. | D. Receiving and sending brain signals. |
30. How did Thibault feel about this test?
A. It was comfortable from the beginning. |
B. It had a strong influence on him. |
C. It satisfied all his needs in life. |
D. It made him very upset. |
31. What do Dr. Ravi Vaidyanathanˈs words mean?
A. The robotic suit is worth further study. |
B. The robotic suit will be used very soon. |
C. Developing the robotic suit is a waste of time. |
D. Making the robotic suit will need more patientsˈ help. |
Today, U.S. scientists deal with the continuing problem of land becoming not usable for production because of improper farming methods, deforestation(滥伐森林)or certain other human activities. Globally, more than 2 billion hectares of productive land has already been getting poorer, according to the United Nations. By 2045, about 135 million people around the world may be displaced by desertification(沙漠化).
“When desertification happens, people go hungry and must find other places to make a living,” says Jeff Herrick, a soil(土壤)scientist.
“Where weˈre at now is asking hard questions. What do we do as a community to support the rest of the globe in solving this problem?” says Nichole Barger, a professor of biology at the University of Colorado Boulder.
With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, Herrick and his team have developed the Land-Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS), a free mobile app that helps people decide whether their land can be used for farming. “Any person anywhere in the world can use it,” Herrick says. “It tells you what soils can be found in your area and then gives the information about your own soil.”
Bargerˈs research at the University of Colorado deals with the science behind ecological restoration(生态恢复). She and her workmate provide data(资料)that can be used to make better decisions to protect land from degradation. For example, in one project in southern Utah, Bargerˈs team discovered that controlling wildfires by cutting down trees and burning them harmed the soil underneath. If instead the trees are turned into wood chips that are spread across the soil, soil moisture(水分)increases and plants can grow, thereby cutting down soil erosion(侵蚀).
- What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Separated. B. Tested out. C. Forced to leave home. D. Prevented from working.
33. What can LandPKS be used to do?
A. Increase food production.
B. Record the speed of deforestation.
C. Help people learn about their land.
D. Provide people with modern farming methods.
34.Why is the project in southern Utah mentioned?
A. To show how to protect land in a proper way.
B. To suggest different ways to control wildfires.
C. To encourage Bargerˈs team to make a big discovery.
D. To discuss the important role of planting trees in the future. |
- What is the main idea of the text?
A. Poor land management causes great pain.
B. U.S. scientists work to stop desertification.
C. Human development results in deforestation.
D. New technologies turn deserts into green land.

Handwritten cards can be very special. (1) Like photographs, cards can be stored and looked back on. You can make your own special card with supplies(用品)you have at home. Or you can buy a card from a store. Whatˈs most important is the message you write inside.
The first step is to think of a person for whom youˈd like to make a card. Will you give it to a friend or a family member? Or is it for someone you donˈt know that well but who might need a little encouragement? (2) There are many types: Thank-you cards, congratulations cards, holiday cards, and Iˈm sorry cards are just a few.
(3) This is the hardest but most meaningful part. You can keep the person youˈre making it for in mind while you work. You can ask yourself some questions while writing: What are your favorite memories of that person? What do you appreciate most about him or her? Just write down your sincere thoughts of the person. (4) If theyˈre personal, the message will be special.
Last, sign your name at the bottom. Donˈt forget to include the date, in case the recipient(接受者)keeps the card to reread sometime far in the future.
(5) But getting a handwritten card can make someone who needs it feel appreciated.
A.Now itˈs time to collect your thoughts.
B.Those feelings can mean a lot to them.

Raelene seemed to be in trouble with her mother. It seemed like her mother was screaming(大声喊叫)all the time. Raelene couldnˈt bear it. She tried to keep to herself and out of her motherˈs way. At times she shut herself in her room but her mother would follow her in, still shouting at her and telling her to do things.
One day, when her mother had been screaming, Raelene went outside to get away from it all. Her pet dog, Crystal, came running up to her, tail wagging(摇尾巴), but Raelene had had enough and screamed at Crystal. Crystal dropped her tail between her legs and turned around to run off, looking for a place to hide. Raelene saw how Crystal had run away when she screamed. She thought how it was like what she did when her mother screamed at her.
At school, Raelene was studying science and had learned about experiments, so she decided to carry out an experiment with Crystal. She sat down on the ground, closer to Crystalˈs height where she could see Crystalˈs nose and eyes peeping(偷看)around the corner of the house. Raelene began to talk to Crystal in a soft, gentle voice. This was the experiment. What she said and how she said it were different. Her words said Crystal was a bad dog for running away and hiding. However, she said it in a gentle, loving, and caring voice. Soon Crystal moved out from around the corner and came back with her tail wagging and her whole body full of excitement.
Raelene continued her experiment. She now told Crystal what a good dog she was and how she was the only person who seemed to understand Raelene—but how she did it was in a loud, shouting voice. Crystal again dropped her tail between her legs and ran around the corner.
“This is interesting,” thought Raelene. She now used the same loving words in a gentle, loving voice. Again Crystal came around and rested her head on Raeleneˈs lap.
