The last school bell rings and your kids are off for the summer. For most kids, those thoughts of schoolwork and lessons are a distant memory that they won’t be thinking about again until fall. So it’s important for them to continue some learning.
Have your kids hit the library.

If you are planning a family trip, have them check out the map. Let your kids go online and research where you are going. Have your kids check the weather report in the newspaper or what big event is happening and then have them report back on it at dinner time. Have your kids check out magazines or websites for recipes that can be prepared.
Improve your kids’ writing skills.

故选A项。
根据文章大意以及第一段“The last school bell rings and your kids are off for the summer. For most kids, those thoughts of schoolwork and lessons are a distant memory that they won’t be thinking about again until fall. So it’s important for them to continue some learning. B
Parents do not owe (欠) their children a college education, if they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn’t feel guilty if they can’t. When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.
Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.
One of their obligations is to give their children a sense of personal worth. Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that they won’t try at all. Of course, they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it’s often better to let children learn from their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms (批评) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.
Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others. Also, it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.
No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.
4. What does the underlined word “obligation” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Duty B. Burden C. Excuse D. Debt
5. According to this passage, what should parents do for their children?
A. Offer help but needn’t feel guilty if they can’t. B. Look after their grandchildren for their kids.
C. Buy their kids a house. D. Send their children to the university.
6. In the author’s opinion, when the kids make mistakes, what are parents supposed to do?
A. Blame them and tell them not to do that again.
B. Give them chances to learn from their mistakes.
C. Compare them with brighter brothers or sisters.
D. Correct their mistakes directly.
7. What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?
A. The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.
B. How to teach children correctly.
C. The real duties that parents have to their kids.
D. The reason why parents owe their children something.
A 5. A 6. B 7. C
根据第一段中“They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either.”(他们也没有义务照顾他们的孙辈。)以及划线单词句前半部分“If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor”(如果他们想这么做,这必须被视为一种帮助)故可猜测,obligation为“义务,职责”的意思,结合选项A项Duty“职责,义务”意思一致。故选A项。
根据第一段中“Parents do not owe their children a college education, if they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn’t feel guilty if they can’t.”(父母不欠他们的孩子大学教育,如果他们负担得起,他们当然可以送他们去一个好的大学。 故选A项。
根据第三段中“Of course, they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it’s often better to let children learn from their mistakes by themselves in time.”(当然,当他们做错的时候,应该得到适当的纠正,但往往最好是让孩子自己及时从错误中吸取教训。)
根据文章大意以及最后一段“No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.”(没有孩子要求被生下来。
C
I will never forget the tenth summer of childhood with my grandfather in western Norway at the mountain farm, where my mother was born. As a boy, I always thought people simply bought whatever they need. Whether Grandfather know this, I don’t know. One day he said, “Come, I have something for you.”
I followed him to a workroom. “You should have a toy boat. You can sail it at Storvassdal.” He said. “Great!” I jumped, looking around for the boat. But there was none.
Grandfather pointed to a block of wood. “The boat is in there.” Then he handed me some tools and showed me how to use them properly. “It’ll be a fine boat, and you’ll make it with your own hands,” he said, “No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked. Finished the boat, it wasn’t much to look at, but I was pound. Then I sailed it at Storvassdal.
We had to return to America. “You cannot bring that boat home with you,” my mother said. “We’ve already had too much baggage.” Feeling sad, I hid my boat under a big rock at Storvassdal.
I said good-bye to grandfather, not knowing I would never see him again.
In 1964, I went to Storvassdal with my parents and my wife and children. To my surprise, for 34 years, my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return. I felt we three were together again although my grandfather had died 22 years ago.
I carved “1930” and “1964” on its side and put it back.
I returned to the lake in 1968, 1971, 1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year, my grandfather seemed near.
My last trip to Storvassdal was in 1991. I brought my granddaughters: Catherine,13; Claire,12. I hoped they would understand the importance of the little boat and its simple message. At Storvassdal, Claire said softly, Grandpa, someday I’ll come back.” She added, “And I’ll bring my children.”
8. What did the writer learn from his grandfather?
A. Boy should make a toy by himself. B. People simply buy whatever they need.
C. How to make a boat out of wood. D. No one can give you what you do for yourself.
9. According to the passage, we can infer that ________.
A. the writer’s mother was born in eastern Norway B. Claire understood the meaning of the boat
C. the author came back to Norway four times D. the writer’s grandfather died in 1930
10. The underline words “we three” in Paragraph 6 refers to ________.
A. Mother, the boat and me B. Grandfather, mother and me
C. Catherine, Claire and me D. Grandfather, the boat and me
11. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Little Boat that Sailed Through Time B. The Little Boat and My Life
C. The Little Boat in My Childhood D. The Little Boat and My Grandfather
D 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据文章第三段““No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked.(“你为自己所做的,没有人能给你。”当我工作时,这句话在我的脑海里回荡。)”可知,作者从爷爷那儿学到的是“没有人能为你自己做什么”,故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I hoped they would understand the importance of the little boat and its simple message. At Storvassdal, Claire said softly, Grandpa, someday I’ll come back.” She added, “And I’ll bring my children.”(我希望他们能理解这艘小船的重要性和它传递的简单信息。
根据画线词所在句的前一句“To my surprise, for 34 years, my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return.(令我惊讶的是,34年来,我的宝藏一直在这里,等着我回来。)”和“although my grandfather had died 22 years ago(虽然我爷爷22年前就去世了)”可知,treasure指的是作者的小船,所以three在这里指的是“爷爷、小船和我”,故选D。
根据文章倒数第二段“I returned to the lake in 1968, 1971, 1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year, my grandfather seemed near.(我分别在1968年、1971年、1977年和1988年回到了这个湖。每次我驾着船刻上年份,爷爷似乎就在我身边。)”可知,作者在这艘小船上寄托了对爷爷的思念,随着时间一起航行,一代又一代地传承,所以最好的题目是A选项“The Little Boat that Sailed Through Time(穿越时间的小船)”,故选A。
D
Scientists found the moon may hold water in more places and in larger amounts than they suggested in the past. The finding is based on studies that examined the new data from the US space agency NASA.
The discovery could be important for planned, long-term human bases on the moon. It could mean that enough resources exit on the moon itself to provide drinking water and possibly help produce fuel.
Until about ten years ago, scientists believed the moon was mostly dried. But a series of findings provided evidence that water ice was widespread in small amounts on parts of the moon. The ice was thought to be in areas permanently blocked from sunlight.
But in the new studies, NASA said it was able to confirm the presence of water molecules (分子) on sunlit parts of the lunar surface. The research was led by Casey Hannibal of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland.
Scientists have suggested the source of the water may come from comets (彗星), solar wind or interplanetary (行星间的) dust. The new research provides evidence that the water may be surviving on sunlit lunar surfaces because it is attached to minerals.
“A lot of people think that the discovery I have made is water ice, which is not true,” Hannibal said. “It’s just the water molecules — because they are so spread out that they don’t interact with each other to form water ice or even liquid water.”
“Water is extremely important for deep space exploration. It’s a resource of direct value for our astronauts,” Bleacher said. He noted that water is heavy and costly to transport from Earth. He told reporters the agency believes that it is very important to find out more about where the water comes from and how accessible it is.
“Anytime we don’t need to pack water for our trip, we have an opportunity to take other useful items with us,” he said. That may include materials that could be used to carry out bigger scientific experiments on the moon.
12. What do scientists think of the discovery?
A. Meaningful. B. Meaningless. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
13. What may the future research focus on?
A. How the water is attached to minerals. B. How to utilize the water on the moon.
C. How much water is on the lunar surface. D. How the water survives on sunlit lunar surfaces.
14. What is the special part of the water on the moon?
A. It is healthy to drink. B. It can’t be used directly.
C. It is from other planets. D. It can’t be found in the dark areas.
15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Scientists have recently found liquid water on the moon.
B. The water comes from comets, solar wind or interplanetary dust.
C. The surface of the moon is mostly dried.
D. In the future, human may get liquid water on the moon itself.
A 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“The discovery could be important for planned, long-term human bases on the moon. It could mean that enough resources exit on the moon itself to provide drinking water and possibly help produce fuel.(这一发现对于有计划的、长期的人类在月球上的基地来说很重要。这可能意味着月球本身有足够的资源提供饮用水,并可能帮助生产燃料。)”可知,科学家认为这个发现很有意义,故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“He told reporters the agency believes that it is very important to find out more about where the water comes from and how accessible it is.(他对记者说,该机构认为,更多地了解这些水的来源和获取途径非常重要。)”
根据第五段“Scientists have suggested the source of the water may come from comets (彗星), solar wind or interplanetary (行星间的) dust.(科学家们认为,水的来源可能来自彗星、太阳风或星际尘埃。)”
根据第二段的“It could mean that enough resources exit on the moon itself to provide drinking water and possibly help produce fuel.(这可能意味着月球本身有足够的资源提供饮用水,并可能帮助生产燃料。)”
Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking?
____16____ If you draw wrong conclusions about who you are and what you’re able to do, you’ll limit your potential.
Your thoughts leads to self-perpetuating (自我持续的) cycles. ____17____ So if you think you’re failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure, which reinforces (强化) your belief that you must be a failure.
I see this happen all the time in my therapy office. Someone will come in saying, “I’m just not good enough to advance in my career.” That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort. ____18____
Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount (低估) anything that runs contrary to your belief. Someone who develops the belief that he’s a failure, for example, will view each mistake as proof that he’s not good enough. ____19____ Consider for a minuet that it might not be your lack of talent or skills that are holding you back. Instead, it might be your beliefs that keep you from performing at your peak.
____20____ That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But optimistic thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful result.
A. When he succeeds, he’ll think it is due to luck.
B. That lack of effort stops her from getting promoted.
C. Being more positive can lead to better results.
D. With conscious effort, you can learn to think more positively.
E. However, the way you look at yourself becomes your reality.
F. Once that belief gets deeply rooted in his mind, he will suffer a lot.
G. What you think has a direct impact on how you feel and how you behave.
E 17. G 18. B 19. A 20. C
上文“Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking?”(然而,如果你和大多数人一样,你可能很少花时间反思自己的思维方式。 句中“becomes your reality”与下文“limit your potential”相照应。故选E项。
下文“So if you think you’re a failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure”(所以如果你认为自己是个失败者,你就会觉得自己是个失败者。
上文“That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort”(这种假设会让她感到气馁,导致她不那么努力)提到,“自己不够好不能得到提升”的假设会导致人不努力。 选项B“缺乏努力使她无法升职”符合语境,其中“that lack of effort”呼应上文“put in less effort”。故选B项。
本段第一句“Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount anything that runs contrary to your belief.”(一旦你对自己下了结论,你可能会做两件事;寻找能够强化你的信念的证据,而忽略与你的信念相反的任何东西)指出对自己下了结论会有两种情况。 故选A项。
由下文“That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers.”(这并不是说积极的思想有神奇的力量)可推知,空格处内容与积极的思想有关。

Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to know that you’re having so much pressure at the moment, but there is no need to worry as nobody can avoid such troubles in life and what matters most is how we deal with them. My suggestions are as follows.
First of all, you need to reflect on your study to find the problems. What’s more, it’s better to ask your teachers for help who would help you analyze the problems rationally and give you some professional guidance. Last but not least, stay in a good state. Talk to the ones you trust to relieve your stress and always hold the belief that all the setbacks are temporary. Only through self-belief, hard work and perseverance can we achieve our final goal.
Hopefully, my suggestions will help you out. Wish you a happy life and a good performance in your study.
Yours,

When I was 14 years old, I was a straight A student in the middle school of our small town. I didn’t try particularly hard, I just went to all my classes and paid attention. I could get good grades with minimal effort. I had a great group of friends too: kids I grew up with, that I had known nearly all my life. We hung out together on weekends very often. It seemed there was nothing to be worried about. I think it was the happiest time in my teenage years.
Then my family moved to the UK just before I went to high school because my father changed his job, and everything changed. I was the only Asian in my class. Overnight, I had no friends, and was in a new country where everyone was different. While trying to adapt to the new surroundings and cultures, it turned out that going to public school in a big city like London was much harder than the tiny classroom in my home country that I was used to. Teachers barely knew my name, and all the other kids thought I was strange because of my accent.
It was so hard to fit in. I went to school alone, ate in the canteen alone, and studied in the library alone. No one even wanted to be in the same group with me in class as I always couldn’t understand what other students were talking about. I would cry all night when I went back home. The only thing I dreamed of was going back to the place I once belonged to!
The class and subjects in the UK were so much different to me. Although I had taken English classes before we moved here, the teachers spoke English so fast that I couldn’t catch up at all! Just as I expected, I started underperforming: I tried so hard, but it just wasn’t working. I studied a lot, but then I’d go to the exam, and would get so nervous. Sweating and trembling, I felt like my mind would go blank. All that effort, and I failed anyway. I started to lose my self-confidence. Maybe I wasn’t good enough.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
An English teacher, Kate, noticed that I was struggling.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The after-school class really helped.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
An English teacher, Kate, noticed that I was struggling. She suggested I should go to the after-school classes for the kids who needed help. Eager to get a passing grade, I went. And that was where I met Oliver. Gradually, he became my best friend and I was back on track. In the days that followed, Kate made it a point to discuss my work at school with me. She also gave me lessons on life and its ups and downs from time to time.
The after-school class really helped. Little by little, my grades improved. I made many friends and won many awards as well. As the year progressed, I see that my depression slowly disappeared. It seemed that reshaping ourselves in a new environment wasn’t that terrible as expected. After the end-of-year examination, Kate announced to the class that I was the top student in the class. As I looked at her, I felt a sudden sense of happiness.
