Today is International Women’s Day, and on this special day, Miss Li, a Chinese woman writer, has decided to recommend four Western novels to women readers.
u A Room of One's Own
Author: Virginia Woolf [English]
Price: 23.9 yuan
Content: In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf imagines that Shakespeare had a sister—a sister equal to Shakespeare in talent, and equal in genius, but who never writes a word and dies by her own hand, her genius unexpressed. If only she had had a fixed income and a room of her own to have the freedom to create, argues Woolf, she would have reached the same heights as her immortal(流芳百世的) elder brother.
u Little Women
Author: Louisa May Alcott [American]
Price: 13.50 yuan
Content: Little Women tells the story of four sisters growing up in poverty in Civil War era New England. From their creativity-filled childhood to their pursuits in adulthood, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy consistently demonstrate inner strength and refreshing, inspiring vitality.
u The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
Author: Carson McCullers [American]
Price: 14.99 yuan
Content: Carson McCullers' The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is set in a small Southern town and centers around a group of five misfits who bond over their isolation. Mick Kelly is an adolescent girl who finds comfort in music, and unlike the other four, fights back against her loneliness by searching for beauty, rather than violence or sex or alcohol. The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter has remarkable power, sweep and certainty. Her art suggests a Van Gogh painting peopled with Faulkner figures.
u Coraline
Author: Neil Gaiman [English]
Price: 10.90 yuan
Content: In this eerie Neil Gaiman novel, Coraline's family moves into a new flat, where she discovers a passage to an alternate, mirror universe. While the other world is in many ways better than the original, Coraline eventually realizes that all is not as it seems and that there are children's souls trapped there that she must rescue, along with herself.

Trucker Gerlock traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his dog, Holly, who came with him on every route—including his last one. While driving near Dallas, Texas, on the job, the 59-year-old Gerlock crashed into a concrete column. He was killed instantly.

Pinewood Studios(制片厂) is located about 20 miles west of central London and named after the pine-trees in the grounds. Pinewood has been at the heart of both British and international film production. The house, Heatherden Hall, was bought by Charles Boot in 1934, and he and J. Arthur Rank became partners in the project to build the studios.
Pinewood proved pioneering in its use of the “unit system” that allowed more than one film to be made at a time, and this enabled Pinewood to achieve the highest output of all the studios in the world. The first film completed at Pinewood was Talk of the Devil (1936) while the immediate postwar period saw six major productions including the praised Oliver Twist ( 1948 ) and The Red Shoes ( 1948).
The 1950s saw countless productions including the Doctor series and medical comedy. The series started with Doctor in the House (1954) and led to a further six films. Other notable films of the 1950s age include The Prince and the Showgirl ( 1957) starring Marilyn Monroe, Carve Her Name with Pride (1958t), North West Frontier (1959) and The Thirty-Nine Steps (1959). The Thirty-Nine Steps was a reworking of John Buchan’s novel originally filmed by Hitchcock in 1935.
Because of its new ideas and skills, American production companies crowded to Pinewood and a major reinvestment was required. During the 1960s, four new stages were built to accommodate every aspect of film and television production. This period also saw the start of the association between Pinewood and the James Bond series, which started in 1962 with Dr No. The studios have continued to produce imaginative and technically challenging material such as Superman (1978), Superman Ⅱ (1980), Superman Ⅲ (1983, ), Superman Ⅳ: The Quest for Peace (1987),and Batman (1989).
32. How long is the history of Pinewood Studios’ first film?
A. About 60 years.

C. More than 80 years.
D. More than 100 years.
33. Which film was completed during the early postwar period?
A. The Red Shoes.
B. Doctor in the House
C. The Thirty-Nine Steps.
D. Superman (1978)
34. Why did so many American studios come to Pinewood?
A. Because of the huge production of its films.
B. Because of its advanced ideas and technology.
C. Because of its many famous directors and actors.
D. Because of its wonderful location and investment.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The ups and downs of Pinewood Studios.

The Power of Words
Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from ourselves or someone else. The positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
36 . We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn't be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This ''self-talk'' helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. 37 .
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. 38 .
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. We remember unkind words said to us as well. Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: 39 . If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. 40 .Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
A. Is it loving?
B. How should I say it?
C. We all talk to ourselves sometimes.
D. Negative words destroy all those things.
E. Generally people like positive and pleasant words.
F. However, critical language may cause anger and defense.
G. So we should only speak encouraging words to ourselves.

My mother looked at me suspiciously. I dared not look at her. Knowing that I was late from school five days continuously, I could not offer an acceptable explanation. I knew she did not believe that I had extra classes every day and arrived home after 5 pm. However, realizing she had little choice but to believe in me, she told me that dinner was in the refrigerator. She had to rush for her night shift(夜班) at the local clinic.
Ever since we lost our dad in an accident, my mother became the breadwinner. I was the eldest among the four siblings (兄弟姐妹) and it fell upon my shoulder to ensure that they could become responsible adults. Besides helping mother with the housework, I regularly coached them in their studies. Thankfully, never once had I had to raise my voice or force them to complete their homework. But all of us missed dad very much. He was a model father and husband. Life was cruelly(残酷地) taken away from him at a very young age of 42.
However, my mother managed to pull through and found a job at the clinic. It was very hard for her who had never worked before in her life. But money was scarce and there were five mouths to feed. Dad did not leave much behind. He never suspected he would die so young. We stopped dining out and had our meals mostly at home. We basically lived from hand to mouth. That’s when it hit me that I had to do my part for the family. I knew mother would not agree but I threw caution out of the window and managed to get a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. I worked three hours a day trying to bring money home so that my siblings and I could go out to the movies or dinner once in a while. I was sure that mother suspected something. But she could not quite figure out the source of her suspicion(怀疑).

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals. Now I’d like to tell you something about my favorite festival.
My favorite festival is the Mid-autumn Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar. On that day, my family members usually get together and have a nice meal. At night, I often admire the bright full moon, considered as a symbol of family reunion, and share moon-cakes with my families. I love this festival as I like eating round moon-cakes, which carry people's blessings to the families they love.
I hope that my letter will help you know more about Chinese festivals.
Yours,
Li Hua

官方范文
One day, while I was busy serving the customers, I was shocked to see my mother standing opposite the counter. So surprised was I that I dared not look into her eyes. She appeared shocked at the same time. I clumsily took her orders and saw her staggering to a table occupied by my siblings! My supervisor who saw my worried expression and who knew about my family situation quickly volunteered to take over my duties. Slowly, I removed my apron and joined my family.
Mother made me sit down. She was already crying, and so were my siblings. She covered my hands with hers and told me that she was grateful for my help. I could not hold back my tears and hugged her. How guilt-ridden I was! I told mother that contributing financially to the family was the least I could do to relieve her burden. To my great relief, my beloved mother understood my situation and reassured me everything would be alright. It was then that I came to realize that I should not have hidden such a big secret from her.

One day, while I was busy serving the customers, I was shocked to see my mother standing opposite the counter. So surprised was I that I dared not look into her eyes. I opened my mouth and tried to explain, but she disappeared into the crowd, waving me back to work. Embarrassed, I tried to figure out how I was to explain it to my mother, but it didn’t work. It was then that I realized that it was time I should tell her the truth. After work, I walked home thoughtfully. The moment I opened the door, I found my mother and siblings sitting at the table.
Mother made me sit down. She was already crying, and so were my siblings. I wiped the tears off Mother’s face and apologized to her for hiding the truth about my part-time job. I promised to her I would manage my work and study well and that I was old enough to do my part in this family. My siblings also promised to behave well and help out with more housework. To my great relief, my mother understood my situation. She smiled, held our hands affectionately and comforted us that everything was going to be alright!

M: Yes, he will be catching the bus from Sunderland that day. He’ll be in Durham around 7:15 pm.
W: Great! I can’t wait.

M: Excuse me, Madam. I’d like to borrow several books, but I don’t know where to find them.
W: What books do you want to find?
M: A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and the latest Teens magazine.
W: Well, the book by Stephen Hawking is on the third floor. The magazine is on the second floor and the book by Margaret Mitchell is on the same floor as the magazine.
M: Thanks. Oh, my friend Jenny wants to borrow A Dream of Red Mansions. Is it available now?
W: No. Someone has already checked it out last week. If your friend wants to borrow it, she should come and fill out this form so she can be the first one to borrow it when the book is returned.
M: OK. I’ll tell her that. Now I’ll go to find the books I need. And I think I should hurry. I’m afraid it’ll rain soon. Dark clouds are gathering.
W: OK. You can read here if it rains.

It’s always a good idea to make time to catch up with family and friends and share family vacations, birthdays, and graduations together. If you are meeting another family with small children, Legoland California is a good choice. Last summer, I celebrated my daughter’s birthday there. You can begin your vacation to Legoland by flying into San Diego International Airport. The park is about a 50-minute drive from the airport. We chose the Legoland Castle Hotel because it is one of the newest hotels connected to the park. You can get into the park at least 30 minutes before it opens to the public. The hotel includes a full hot breakfast with your stay. Visitors can also choose a themed room that best fits the family: Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess or Magic Wizard. We tried the last one. We had lots of happy memories of our stay in there. So I hope you are inspired to start planning a joint vacation with your family or friends to deepen your connections!
