For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside.
Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution. People began to notice the problem in the early 1970s. When builders began making houses and offices, they did not want to waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also used man — made building materials which are now known to let out harmful gases.
As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for building green plants.
Scientists believe that a plant’s leaves absorb the pollutants (污染物). In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants.
    1. Indoor air pollution may be more dangerous than the air outside mainly because _________.
    A. the flow of air indoor is limited B. the building are too high
    C. people don’t want to waste energy D. the building materials are harmful
    2. In the last paragraph the word “absorb” may mean _________.
    A. give out B. bring up C. take in D. turn into
    3. Scientists believe that plants can_________.
A absorb pollutions and let out oxygen B. make your houses more prettier
    C. absorb all the pollutants D. change pollutants into oxygen
    4. According to the last paragraph, we should _________ to clean the air.
    A. plant all kinds of plants B. have different kinds of plants
    C. have the same kind of plant D. plant more trees
A 2. C 3. A 4. B
根据文章第二段“To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also used man — made building materials which are now known to let out harmful gases.(为了做到这一点,他们建造了限制内外空气流动的建筑物。他们还使用人造建筑材料,这些材料现在已经知道会释放有害气体)”可推知,室内空气污染可能比室外空气更危险,主要是因为室内的空气流通受限。故选A。
根据所猜词下一句“In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves(作为交换,植物通过叶子释放氧气)”可知,植物要先吸入才能释放。 A. give out分发;B. bring up抚养;C. take in吸入;D. turn into变为。
根据文章最后一段“Scientists believe that a plant’s leaves absorb the pollutants (污染物). In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves.(科学家认为植物的叶子可以吸收污染物。作为交换,植物通过叶子释放氧气)”可知,植物可以吸收有害物质并释放出氧气。故选A。

After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.
    5. The reason for Robert’s attempts to kill himself was that .
    A. a terrible traffic accident happened to him
    B. he had to live in a dark and silent world
    C. he was struck by the lightning once more
    D. nobody in the world cared about him
    6. What was Robert doing when he was struck by the lightning?
    A. Sheltering from the rain under a tree.
    B. Driving a car.
    C. Taking a walk with a stick.
    D. Lying on the ground.
    7. We can infer from the text that .
    A. there was no accurate explanation for Robert's recovery
    B. many doctors came because Robert was badly injured
    C. Robert’s wife sent for doctors immediately after the shock
    D. a sudden Injury In the head led to Robert’s recovery
    8. What’s the best title of the whole passage?
    A. A Terrible Electrical Accident
    B. Robert Edwards and His Wife
    C. What a Sudden Shock
    D. An Unforgettable Experience
B 6. A 7. A 8. C
根据文章的第一段的“The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life.(失明和听力的丧失使他陷入了极度的悲伤之中,他有几次试图结束自己的生命。)”
根据第二段的“He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning.(他站在一棵大树下以免淋湿,但他被闪电击中了。)” 故选A。
根据第三段的“However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened.(然而,对于为什么会发生这种情况,他们中没有一个人能给出令人信服的答案。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段的“The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.(一位医生给出的唯一合理的解释是,由于罗伯特是在一次突然的打击中失去了视力和听力,也许,他恢复视力和听力的唯一方法就是通过另一次突然的打击。)” C“What a Sudden Shock(突如其来的打击)”更符合文章主题。故选C。

To most people, noise pollution is a jet flying over their head. For one Spanish woman, it is a neighbor playing the piano. The woman has taken her neighbor to court. Now she wants to send her neighbor to prison for over seven years on the charges of psychological damage and noise pollution.
In a country known for its noisiness, the case has raised eyebrows. Neighbors often complain about street noise in Spain, but people seeking prison time for someone practicing the piano is
unheard of. At the trial, Sonia Bosom says she has been suffering noise pollution up to now due tothe practice sessions of Laia Martin, who lives below her. Martin, 27, didn’t admit that she played at home that often, saying she took regular classes in other towns and mostly practiced at home on the weekends.
On the first day of the trial, the newspaper reported that Bosom told the court she now hated pianos so much that she couldn’t even stand seeing them in a film.Bosom says years of hearing
constant playing has caused her “psychological injury”. Medical reports show she has suffered
from a variety of problems, including insomnia (失眠), anxiety, and panic attacks.
She says tests by local authorities have found that the sound levels made by the piano are up to10 decibels (分贝) higher than the limit. City authorities have asked the family several times to either stop the piano playing or soundproof (隔音) the room. The family told the court that they carried out soundproofing work twice but the complaints continued.
The court hasn’t made a final decision. A spokeswoman says the trial will end before May.
    9. Bosom wants to send Martin to prison because _______.
    A. Martin’s playing the piano damaged her health
    B. Bosom suffered from heart attack
    C. Martin refused to take regular classes in other towns
    D. Martin flew a jet over her head
    10. How did Laia Martin respond to the complaints?
    A. She stopped playing the piano.
    B. She soundproofed the room.
    C. She didn’t admit she played at home.
    D. She took her neighbor to court.
    11. Which of the following may probably be the best title for the passage?
    A. A 7-year Sentence Caused by the Piano
    B. A Pianist Accused of Noise Pollution
    C. Health Problems of a Spanish Woman
    D. Actions Against Noise by Local Authority
A 10. B 11. B

根据倒数第二段最后一句“The family told the court they carried out soundproofing work twice but the complaints continued.(这家人告诉法庭她们已经安装了两次隔音设备,可是还是会遭到投诉)”可知,Laia Martin回应这些投诉的方式是她给房间隔音了。
根据文章第一段“For one Spanish woman, it is a neighbor playing the piano. The woman has taken her neighbor to court. Now she wants to send her neighbor to prison for over seven years on the charges of psychological damage and noise pollution.(对于一位西班牙妇女来说,这是一位弹钢琴的邻居。这个女人把她的邻居告上了法庭。现在,她又想以精神损害和噪音污染的罪名把邻居送进监狱,判处七年以上的有期徒刑)”及全文内容可知,本文主要讲述一个钢琴家因为制造噪音而被告上了法庭。因此B项“一位钢琴家被指控噪音污染”作为标题最合适。故选B项。

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies (药店).Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay away because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, smoking, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.
Every day, more than six million Americas turn to the Internet for medical answers—most of them aren't nearly sceptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn't look up " headache," and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 are scored as "high quality.” Recent studies have found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.
The problem is that most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web. "They use a search engine like Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative (权威的),so it's hard to know if what you’re reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.
    12. According to the text, an increasing number of Americans .
    A. are suffering from mental disorders
    B. turn to Internet pharmacies for help
    C. like to play deadly games with doctors
    D. are sceptical about surfing medical websites
    13. Why do some Americans stay away from doctors?
    A. They find medical devices easy to operate.
    B. They prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors.
    C. They are afraid to face the truth of their health.
    D. They are afraid to misuse their health insurance.
    14. What can we learn according to the study of Brown Medical School?
    A. More than 6 million Americans distrust doctors.
    B. Only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit.
    C. About 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality.
    D. 72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts.
    15. Which of the following is the author's main argument?
    A. It's cheap to self-treat your own illness.
    B. It's embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.
    C. It's reasonable to look up a medical website.
    D. It's dangerous to be your own doctor.
B 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据文章第一段“Talking freely with your doctor can make you feel better and gives your doctor the information she or he needs to give you the best care. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to discuss something that is bothering you.” Here are some tips for talking with your doctor.(这里有一些与你的医生交谈的小建议。)
Remember, your doctor and other caregivers are on your side.(记住,你的医生和其他护理人员都站在你这边。)
根据文章“This will make it easier for you to answer questions about your symptoms(症状)and how medicines make you feel. It also makes it easier for you to bring up anything that you are worried about. Make sure to be honest about how you feel and how long you've felt that way.” Before your doctor's visit, keep notes on how you are feeling.(在你的医生来之前,记下你的感受。)
根据文章“Your medical history is a list of your illnesses, treatments, what the doctors told you to do, and anything else you think your doctor should know. Also, if you are allergic(过敏)to any medicines, be sure to mention that to your doctor.” Bring your medical history, including a list of your current medicines.(带上你的病史,包括你目前的药物清单。)
根据文章“Do not be afraid to ask your doctor any questions you have. To remember all the questions you have when you are not in the doctor's office, write them down and bring the list with you to your appointment.” 以及“Remember—there's no such thing as a stupid question. If you don't understand the answer to a question, ask the doctor to explain it again until you do understand.” This will make getting answers easier.(这将使获得答案更容易。)
