To raise money for restaurant workers who had to stay at home during COVID, two brothers, Aiden and Louis Ardine, decided to walk 3,200 miles across America to raise money.
Having just arrived on the sands of the Pacific Ocean, Aiden and Louis Ardine have now completed their five-month walk which started on the Asbury Park boardwalk in New Jersey. They hoped to raise $30,000 for some charities (慈善组织) that were helping restaurant workers waiting for lockdown (隔离) to end, but ended up making $70,000 — which they gave way to the COCO Fund and the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.
“This would not have been possible without the help of a huge community of people, whether people were donating or helping us guide our way across the United States.” said Aiden Ardine. “This was surely an adventure full of hope, and it proved people are born good and want to help their neighbors.”
Just like cross-country trips in this nation, their journey was characterized by amazing views, long roads, and helpful strangers: like a man who passed them in the extreme heat of summertime Iowa, before doubling back and giving them a cold Gatorade; or a Nevada campground manager who left them stay for free.
In Utah they had what the naturalist John Muir would have described as an “interview” with a black bear, when rounding a corner in the path, they found themselves within a few feet of it.
When they reached San Francisco, their supporters were waiting for them on the beach. Afterwards they flew home along with their mom who had been there to meet them. After their adventurous stay away from home, we can only imagine she was really feeling proud of her sons.
    4. What did the two brothers collect money for?
    A. Setting up some charities. B. Helping to end the lockdown.
    C. Completing their five-month walk. D. Aiding restaurant workers stuck at home.
    5. Which word can best describe the two brothers?
    A. Humorous. B. Caring. C. Curious. D. Honest.
    6. What happened to the brothers in Utah?
    A. They met with a bear. B. They were interviewed.
    C. They visited a naturalist. D. They were lost in the path.
    7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. A Long Journey B. Walk with Love
    C. A Proud Mother D. Adventure with Fun
D 5. B 6. A 7. B

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our expanding waistlines lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article In The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations—in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength(强度)— first set moe than 60 years ago — require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg). Today, the average American man weighs nearly 194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg). Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption that is built into the aircraft seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from ‘the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’.”
Most complaints about airplane seats focus on their lack of comfort and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times’ article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Investigators of the issue got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight dummies Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Fortunately, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board’s investigators have never seen an accident involving a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.
    8. What is the article in The New York Times mainly concerned with?
    A. The size of airplane seats and seat belts.
    B. Safety of overweight airplane passengers.
    C. Airplane crashes involving commercial planes.
    D. A medical problem caused by being overweight.
    9. Robert Salzar would probably agree that .
    A. overweight passengers should buy two seats
    B. the government should help produce safer planes
    C. standards for airplane seat strength should be raised
    D. passengers should know how to protect themselves
    10. We can learn from the text that .
    A. airplane seat makers have taken action now
    B. there are few complaints about airplane seats
    C. those seate near the overweight may suffer too
    D. only a small number of airplane accidents involve the overweight
    11. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Why Do Passengers Feel Anxious about Flying?
    B. Will 42% of Americans Be OVERWEIGHT BY 2030?
    C. When Will the Overweight Enjoy Their Flight?
    D. Are Airplane Seats Safe Enough for the Overweight?
B 9. C 10. C 11. D
根据第二段第一句“The New York Times’ Christine Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. ”(《纽约时报》的Christine Negroni报道说,工程师和科学家正在质疑飞机座椅的构造是否足以保护超重旅客)可知,这个报道主要关注的是肥胖乘客乘坐飞机的安全问题。故选B。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“If a heavier person completely fills a seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salzar”(如果一个体重较重的人完全占据了一个座位,那么在坠机过程中,这个座位就不太可能发挥应有的作用)可知,肥胖乘客乘坐飞机时,座椅不一定能够保证他们的安全,故可推断Robert Salzar很可能希望提高飞机座椅的强度标准。
根据第四段中的““ If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered by ‘ the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’.””(如果座椅或安全带失灵,”他说,“乘客不受控制的移动可能会危及坐在附近的乘客)可知,肥胖乘客周围的乘客也可能会有危险。
根据第二段“The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers.”(《纽约时报》的Christen Negroni报道称,工程师和科学家正在质疑飞机座椅的构造是否足以保护超重旅客)结合全文内容,可知本文主要讲了随着肥胖人群的增多,目前的飞机座椅能否保证他们的安全?

Is looking fashionable more important than being comfortable? Many people seem to think so, judging the things they wear. But fashion is not everything. It is more important to be a healthy and good person.
People go to great lengths to be fashionable. Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes and tight body shapers that limit blood flow. Men and women alike spend time and money on products that change their natural hair color and use hot irons and blow dryers to curl or straighten their hair. Some people spend several hours a day in front of a mirror. Is fashion important enough to spend so much time and effort on changing how you look like?
If the purpose of fashion is to make a person feel good, it does not make sense that he or she would go through so much discomfort to be fashionable. Fashion should not come first. People should focus on being healthy and positive. What people wear does not show anything about their personalities. Instead of spending hours choosing a suit, perhaps you should call your friends and do something together! Instead of going on strict diets and starving, why not eat some healthy foods and then exercises? By doing these things, you can keep a healthy lifestyle and truly grow as a person.
    12. The author’s main purpose in writing the text is to________.
    A. show readers advantages and disadvantages of dieting
    B. persuade readers to value health more than fashion
    C. tell readers ways to become fashionable
    D. inform readers of the latest fashion trends
    13. Which statement best shows the author’s opinion?
    A. Fashion can make people do some unhealthy things.
    B. Fashion increases famous people’s self-respect.
    C. When you look good, you feel good.
    D. People need to diet to lose weight.
    14. What does the underlined phrase “go to great lengths” possibly mean in paragraph 2?
    A. go abroad B. spend lots of money
    C. do everything possible D. buy expensive clothing
    15. Which of the following activities would the author most likely suggest?
    A. Shopping for fashionable clothes B. Starting a strict diet with a friend
    C. Going skating with friends D. Changing the hairstyle every week
B 13. A 14. C 15. C
分析文章内容,结合第一段关键句“But fashion is not everything. It is more important to be a healthy and good person.”(但时尚不是一切。
根据文章第二段关键句“Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes and tight body shapers that limit blood flow.”(有些人认为他们必须有某种体型,所以他们为了改变自己的身材而进行极端的、不健康的饮食。 故选A项。
根据画线短语后句“Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes and tight body shapers that limit blood flow.”(有些人认为他们必须有某种体型,所以他们为了改变自己的身材而进行极端的、不健康的饮食。
根据文章最后一段关键句“What people wear does not show anything about their personalities. Instead of spending hours choosing a suit, perhaps you should call your friends and do something together!”(人们穿什么并不表明他们的个性。
Winter is often bitterly cold which often makes us stay indoors more instead of heading out to exercise. Worse still, there are many viruses doing their best to make you sick. And sneezing, coughing and nose blowing make the rooms a habitat for viruses. ___16___. Touching a doorknob or shaking a hand may make you get sick. Although it may sound terrible, there are still some things you can do to avoid viruses. Here are several simple tips to stay healthy in winters.
    Wash your hands
You pick up viruses everywhere and they live on your hands, so wash your hands and do it often. ___17___ But if that’s not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer

    Get the flu shot (疫苗)
___19___, but getting the flu shot lowers your chances of getting the flu. For example, getting the flu shot last year resulted in a 34% lower risk of coming down with the flu.
    Avoid sick people
___20___. Viruses spread very easily through the air, so keep at least six feet between you and the sneezing, sniffling and coughing person.
    A. It’s no guarantee
    B. Take care of your face
    C. Keep your hands away from your face
    D. The best way is to use regular soap and water
    E. It is easy for viruses to spread from person to person
    F. If someone around you is sick, then keep your distance
    G. Because there are always some unexpected things in life
E 17. D 18. C 19. A 20. F
根据下文“Touching a doorknob or shaking a hand may make you get sick.”
根据上文“so wash your hands and do it often.”
根据下文“Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands.”
根据下文“but getting the flu shot lowers your chances of getting the flu.”
根据下文“Viruses spread very easily through the air, so keep at least six feet between you and the sneezing” 病毒很容易在空气中传播,所以你和喷嚏之间至少要保持6英尺的距离,可知本段强调要和周围生病的人保持距离。故选F。
