SYDNEY - Fresh from winning a silver medal at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, China’s head coach Zheng Wei remained clear-minded about the latest achievement and expected her team to continue to grow. At the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup, China reached their first semifinals in major competitions in almost three decades before losing to the United States in the final to pocket a silver medal for the second time in history.
Sydney is not an unfamiliar place to Zheng. In 1994, as a basketball player, she and her teammates finished runners-up (亚军) at the formerly known FIBA World Championship for Women. Zheng said that Sydney is a “blessed land” for the Chinese women’s basketball team.
The 59-year-old was appointed(任命) head coach in May after working as an assistant coach within the team for more than a decade. She believed that the new role means a different working style. “While I was an assistant coach, I took care of the players. But now I have to be strict with them so that they could give full play to their potential,” she said.
Zheng is still aware of the gap between China and those strong sides, especially the United States, who have won the World Cup four times in a row. “The sport of basketball is developing in these years. The pace is faster with more physical contact and more flexibility in player positions, as we can see from the United States,” she said.
“There is a gap (间隙) separating us and those powerhouses on the global stage,” said the coach, adding that they would learn lessons from each match to improve. A positive Zheng stressed that the team is quite young, with an average age of below 26. “That means they still have room to improve,” she said. “They don’t have much experience in major international events. Given enough time, they will go further.”
4. Why is Sydney a “blessed land” for the Chinese women’s basketball team?
A. The team always beats the American team in Sydney.
B. The team is always supported by Zheng Wei in Sydney.
C. The team has won various awards, including the championship.
D. The team has won the second place in the finals twice in Sydney.
5. What makes Zheng Wei strict with her players now?
A. Her new role. B. Rich experience.
C. Influence of emotions. D. Dissatisfaction with the team.
6. Which of the following best describes coach Zheng?
A. Responsible. B. Patient. C. Honest. D. Helpful.
7. What does Zheng Wei advise her team to do?
A. To increase team training time.
B. To make the team feel stressed.
C. To select some more experienced players.
D. To gain experience in major international events.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. A 7. D

In mid-August, Hou Changliang and Lei Yudan finally held their wedding ceremony at Hou’s hometown in Shaoyang, central China’s Hunan Province.
During the past 11 years, Hou has been traveling and teaching in rural schools across three provinces in Southwest China. In 2011, he signed up for a program, funded by government agencies since 2003. The programme sends college graduates to China’s underdeveloped western regions to work for one to three years in different fields, such as education, agriculture and rural management.
Born into a rural family, Hou knows how life-changing education can be for a rural kid. When most young people were competing for places in big cities, Hou headed deep into the mountains. For Hou, the most difficult aspect of teaching in a remote village was not the poor working conditions, low income that come with it. For two years, he battled to end the alarming drop-out rate among his students in Dahua, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Locals often saw little reason to support school education for their children, especially girls. “The number of students tended to dwindle after winter vacations,” said Hou. “After the Chinese New Year, some were brought to big cities to work when they were old enough.”
Since the 1990s, working in cities has gradually become the main way of employment for rural laborers. Working in cities becomes the most popular path for young people from rural regions to earn a decent(体面的) income and become independent early, but at the cost of their education.
Studies into the high drop-out rate of rural students in middle school show that students from poor families often feel anxious about the burden of education on their parents and are more likely to drop out when they have poor grades.
“If I can’t change the parents’ mind, at least I can change the mind of my students - the future parents,” said Hou.
8. What is the purpose of the programme in China’s underdeveloped western regions?
A. To develop different fields.
B. To provide jobs for the graduates.
C. To promote the education development.
D. To guide college students to choose a career.
9. What problem does Hou find most difficult to solve in teaching?
A. The hard working conditions and income.
B. The gap between the rural area and the city.
C. The drop-out rate is too high.
D. The students’ ignorance of the importance of education.
10. What does the underlined word “dwindle” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Shoot up. B. Remain the same. C. Decrease. D. Change.
11. What can we learn about rural students from the last two paragraphs?
A. They obey their parents.
B. Their mind needs to change.
C. They feel great pressure to study.
D. They generally have poor grades.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. B

【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段划线词后句“After the Chinese New Year, some were brought to big cities to work when they were old enough. (春节过后,一些人到了足够大的年龄就被带到大城市工作。)”可知,寒假过后,学生人数趋于减少。所以划线词dwindle为“减少”之意。故选C。

Chewing uses a surprising amount of energy. An experiment that looked at the energy use associated with chewing gum (口香糖) found that it can increase bodily energy use by up to 15 per cent.
Adam van Casteren at the University of Manchester in the UK and his colleagues measured energy use in 21 people between 18 and 45 years old as they chewed gum for 15 minutes.
The gum was tasteless and calorie-free. “This way it doesn’t activate the digestive (消化的) system to the same extent as it otherwise would,” says van Casteren. “We wanted to measure just chewing or as close to chewing as we could get.
Each participant (参与者) was asked to chew two types of gum- one soft and the other tough-so they could compare the effects of the gum’s properties (性能) on the participants’ energy uses.
Energy use was measured using a plastic dome (半球形物) covering the participants’ heads. A monitor inside the dome measured oxygen intake and the amount of carbon dioxide released. “You can use this information to figure out how much energy is being used,” says van Casteren.
Before the experiment the participants had all worn the plastic dome while they sat watching a film in order for the researchers to acquire their base level energy uses. The researchers found that chewing the soft gum raised energy use by about 10 per cent, while chewing the tougher gum increased this use by around 15 per cent. Van Casteren says it’s interesting that a small change in the properties of the gum had such a notable effect on energy use.
He says he expects the energy used to chew real food will be even larger as many foods such as steak and nuts require a lot of effort to break down. “I want to look at how much energy chewing nuts and seeds uses next,” he says.
12. Which aspect of chewing gum does Adam van Casteren study?
A. The taste and calorie of gum.
B. The participants of chewing gum.
C. The softness and hardness of gum.
D. The energy use involved in chewing gum.
13. Why is the tasteless and calorie-free gum used?
A. To make chewing healthy.
B. To make the study objective.
C. To save energy in chewing it.
D. To protect the digestive system.
14. What is the function of the monitor in a plastic dome?
A. Researchers use it to fix the participants’ head.
B. To measure oxygen and carbon dioxide in the gum.
C. Researchers can use it to collect information.
D. To work out the energy used during the research.
15. How does the author support his view in Paragraph 6?
A. By doing a survey. B. By giving examples.
C. By citing references. D. By making a comparison.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D

Explain what you feel is the problem and be honest about it. Then ask them to do the same. Let them talk for as long as they need to. Really listen and don’t interrupt them.____18____
Apologize to them and accept their apology.
Even if you didn’t do anything and you believe the situation is their fault, opening with an apology sets the tone. You could say “I’m really sorry things have gotten to this point. I want things to be better between us.” If you did wrong them in some way, apologize to them sincerely.____19____

Good morning, everyone! It is my honor to stand here to give a lecture on friendship. I think this topic indicates when friends are in trouble, we try our best to help them. It is the true friendship of friends.
I’ll never forget last summer vacation, when I was addicted to online games. Having played day and night, I ignored all my homework. When I returned to school in the new term, I felt myself left far behind by my classmates in studies, which greatly discouraged me. Thanks to the help of my good friends in my study and life, I not only caught up with my classmates, but also got rid of the habit of playing online games.
I do hope my story can remind us all to cherish friendship, help each other and make progress together. Thanks for your attention.

Everybody in the ship liked Bobby, he was so good - tempered and playful, but the boy was the dog’s constant playmate. He was a happy little guy, and the two are so fond of each other.
One evening while the little boy and the dog were playing together, the ship shook suddenly, and splash (扑通一声) went the child into the sea!
A cry was raised, “A hand over! A hand over!” and the brave dog jumped over the side of the ship, and swam towards the boy.
The little boy’s father, half crazy, jumped with others into a small boat; but it was too dark to see far before them. All gave the child up for lost.
At last they heard a splash on the left side of the ship. “Pull on quick!” cried the father. The boat was turned, the men pulled with all their strength, and in a moment brave Bobby was alongside, holding up the child in his mouth! Joy! Joy! Joy!

Poor Bobby swam and dodged (躲闪), till he was almost tired out.“Stop rowing,” cried the officer to the men “and turn the boat back.”
Just at that moment the shark, which had got very close to the dog, turned on his back and opened his horrid mouth! Bobby was all but gone. His master, the officer rose, pointed his gun, and fired. In a moment the water was tinged with blood: the horrid jaws of the shark were shattered to pieces! The men then rowed to the spot where Bobby was swimming about.
