“Fast fashion” has been mentioned so often in the past two years. It refers to low-cost, quickly-made clothing that copies the latest high-quality fashions. Unlike the traditional clothing industry where designers plan their new lines every season, fast fashions are made and sold whenever new fashions appear. They are put in shops and online quickly to create a high demand.
However, environmentalists are getting more worried about the effects of fast fashion on the environment. More than 100 billion items of such clothing are made every year. This is expected to grow by 60 percent by 2030. The fast fashion business model is having adverse effects on the environment. Many of the clothes end up in landfills and are not recycled. The chemicals used to make the clothes are bad for the environment. These cause health problems for people working in clothes factories. There are reports that even children make many of these clothes.
The way people are buying clothes is adding to the problem of clothing waste. Many years ago, people went to stores and tried clothes on. People took more time and thought more carefully before they bought clothes. They also wore them for longer. Today, people order cheap clothes on the Internet so often and if they don’t like them, they send them back or throw them away. Some people say this is causing throwaway society. Some people buy clothes and never even wear them. The German media company Deutsche Welle wrote: “Every year in Europe, four million tons of clothing ends up in the trash. Less than one percent of this is recycled.” It seems that the fashion industry is wasting much.
8. Which of the following is a feature of fast fashions?
A. They are of high quality.
B. They are not seasonal.
C. They are difficult to make.
D. They are sold only in online shops.
9. What does the underlined word “adverse” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Harmful. B. Positive. C. Obvious. D. Little.
10. How does the author prove his opinion in the last paragraph?
A. By providing examples. B. By listing data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By raising questions.

Stan Lee was born in 1922. When he was just 17, he got a job at a company that made comic books. Although the salary was beyond his imagination, Mr Lee got tired of it. Most superheroes were strong and smart and always knew the right thing to do. Mr Lee wanted to have a chance to create new superheroes that had weaknesses. Mr Lee didn’t create the heroes by himself. He worked with artists to come up with the ideas. Some people thought the comic books would not sell well and that the readers would be unhappy to see superheroes lead a normal life.
Mr Lee was able to create characters that were different from anything that had been seen in comic books before. Spider-Man was never sure he was doing the right thing, but he always seemed to have something funny to say to the bad guys. Mr Lee made it okay for comic book heroes to be like common people. He also had the clever idea of having his comic book heroes appear in each other’s stories. For example, Spider-Man might show up in a Fantastic Four story. This made readers feel shocked. He also brought them into the real world. Batman and Superman lived in made-up cities. But Mr Lee decided that Peter Parker (who turns into Spider-Man) should live in New York City.
In 1980. Mr Lee moved to California to promote his movies. He wanted to try and get his superheroes onto TV and into the movies. He didn’t have too much luck at first, although The Incredible Hulk became popular TV shows. But after the success of The X-Men and Spider-Man movies in the early 2000s, movies with Marvel heroes began to be favored by millions of fans. Marvel movies have now earned over $ 24 billion. Mr Lee is no longer with us, but the heroes he created live on.
12. Why did Stan Lee get tired of his job at a company?

When I was 10, my friend Sydney suffered from a brain cancer. Sydney fought against it, but the cancer did not respond to the treatment, and could not be removed. Sydney died at the age of 11.
After her death, I felt sad and discouraged. I decided to turn these negative emotions into positive actions. When I was 15 years old, I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild (PPD) with two friends. My goal is to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children.
Over the years, PPD had held fundraisers (募捐活动) across the city. The first Pink Polka Dots Guild event, a garage sale, just raised $900, but our latest fundraiser, the 2012 golf tournament, brought in over $73,000. In the past five years, we have raised almost a million dollars to help do a research on removing brain cancer.
I’ve been shocked by the public recognition that PPD has earned. It received an award from President. This great honour raised awareness and money for our cause.
The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries, such as “Tumor Paint”, which illuminates (照射) cancerous cells so that doctors can remove them with amazing accuracy. The discovery appeared in Time Magazine. I was very proud to have helped fund the research of this life-saving technology.
Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with devotion, it is possible to make a difference in the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots set off in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a competitive speaker and a devoted volunteer.

根据第一段“When I was 10, my friend Sydney suffered from a brain cancer. Sydney fought against it, but the cancer did not respond to the treatment, and could not be removed. Sydney died at the age of 11. (在我10岁的时候,我的朋友Sydney患了脑癌。Sydney与癌症作了斗争,但是癌症对治疗没有反应,也不能切除。Sydney 11岁时就去世了。)”由此可知,Sydney在11岁时由于脑癌去世了。故答案为Sydney died at the age of 11.
根据第三段“Over the years, PPD had held fundraisers (募捐活动) across the city. The first Pink Polka Dots Guild event, a garage sale, just raised $900, but our latest fundraiser, the 2012 golf tournament, brought in over $73,000. In the past five years, we have raised almost a million dollars to help do a research on removing brain cancer. (多年来,PPD在整个城市举办募捐活动。第一次PPD公会活动,一场车库甩卖,刚刚筹集了900美元,但我们最新的筹款活动,2012年的高尔夫锦标赛,筹集了超过73000美元。在过去的五年里,我们已经筹集了近一百万美元来帮助进行一项移除脑癌的研究。)”以及第五段“The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries (我们所做的努力确实帮助了癌症研究。PPD为一些科学发现提供了启动资金)”可知,PPD活动旨在筹集资金帮助移除脑癌的研究。故答案为PPD aims to raise money to help do a research on removing brain cancer.
根据第二段“When I was 15 years old, I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild (PPD) with two friends. My goal is to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children. (当我15岁的时候,我和两个朋友一起创建了PPD。我的目标是筹集足够的资金来找到脑癌的治疗方法,脑癌是儿童中第二常见的癌症。)”再根据划线处后面的brain cancer,可知是找到治疗方法消除或者切除脑癌,所以推断removing意为“消除,移除,切除”。故答案为Cut off.
根据第五段“The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. (我们所做的努力确实帮助了癌症研究。PPD为一些科学发现提供了启动资金,比如“肿瘤染色”,它能照亮癌细胞,这样医生就能以惊人的准确性切除它们。这一发现刊登在《时代》杂志上。我很自豪能够资助这项拯救生命的技术的研究。)”由此可推断出,作者创立的PPD为一些科学发现提供了资金,为这些研究提供了帮助,所以作者感到很自豪。故答案为Because he found PPD, which has helped fund the research of life-saving technology.
根据最后一段“Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with devotion, it is possible to make a difference in the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots set off in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a competitive speaker and a devoted volunteer. (PPD激励我成为一名积极分子。我的经验告诉我,只要付出,就有可能改变世界。PPD带给我的决心影响了我生活的方方面面,使我成为一名有竞争力的演讲者和一名敬业的志愿者。)”可知我们能从作者经历中学习到只要付出,就有可能改变世界。故答案为 We have learned that it is possible to make a difference in the world with devotion.
