    A

As a student, if you’re considering getting a part-time job to earn pocket money during summer or winter vacations, here are some of the good choices.

    Tutor

If you’re particularly good at a subject, you might be able to get paid for helping younger students get better grades. In many cases, it’s possible to make $15 to $20 an hour. Plus, with this job, you’re able to flexibly set your own schedule. It’s a good way for students to both earn money and take part in after-class activities.

    Dog Walker

As more people are becoming pet owners, the need for people to provide care services for such animals increases. Better yet, the pay is on the higher side, with dog walkers making as much as $30 for a 30-minute walk. If you are an animal lover, a job as a dog walker is suitable for you.

    Babysitter

Depending on how many kids you look after, you might be able to make $12 to $15 an hour for each kid. To get more work chances, get a first aid certificate(急救证书). Some community centers offer babysitting courses, and you can charge higher prices if you have such kind of certificate. With a driver’s license, you will be more competitive. But this is not necessary.

    Lifeguard

If you’re a good swimmer, lifeguard can be one of the great part-time jobs available for you. At the beginner level, you might only make $9 to $10 an hour. Once you become more experienced, you could make up to $15 to $16 per hour. If you can be a lifeguard for more than a year or two, the increased money can be very satisfactory.

    21. What is a must to be a tutor?

    A. Joining in activities after class.  B. Attending community courses.

    C. Getting excellent subject grades.  D. Being experienced at swimming.

    22. What advantage should you have when you apply to be a babysitter?

    A. Charging a much lower price.  B. Knowing first aid acknowledge.

    C. Being able to work for a long time. D. Enjoying spending time with animals.

    23. How much might you make for three hours as a new lifeguard?

    A. $30.     B. $45.   C. $48.    D. $60.

    B

I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated but the best thing always needs waiting. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park which lies in Hawaii.

When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise.

In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.

Nearly another one hour later, Amazing!a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive(印象深刻的)sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I cannot wipe out forever.

Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasingly unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

    24. When did they see the first light of the sunrise?

    A. About 3 o’clock.  B. About 4 o’clock.  C. Nearly 5 o’clock. D. Nearly 6 o’clock.

    25. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “chilly” in paragraph three?

    A. cold.     B. interesting    C. warm.   D. terrible.

    26. What’s the author’s attitude towards waiting for the sunrise?

    A. Excited all the time.       B. Firstly excited then impatient.

    C. Afraid all the time.        D. Firstly excited then afraid.

    27. What does the author want to tell us by this passage?

    A. My friends and I took a trip to Hawaii.

    B. I enjoyed the most flaming sunrise in my life.

    C. Hawaii is a good place to enjoy the sunrise.

    D. Sometimes it deserves to be patient with the best.

    C

A Westview High School student Kara Fan was named “America’s Top Young Scientist” by 3M for creating a liquid (液体) bandage last October.

The prizes of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge included $25,000 that Kara Fan can spend however she wishes —she said it would likely be saved for college — plus a family trip to New York City.

A traditional bandage is a thin piece of cloth which you tie around a wound. But Fan’s new creation is liquid. She used lemon leaf, a polymer (聚合物) and silver nitrate (which is often used to treat wounds and burns on the skin). Silver nitrate also plays a key role in her invention: it creates a thin layer to protect a wound while killing harmful bacteria (细菌).

From around 1,000 young scientists nationwide who offered videos of their work, 3M made the top 10 finalists known publicly. The finalists traveled to Minnesota for the three-day competition finals. Fan said they first paired up to compete in a few challenges that showed how well they worked with others. On the final day they gave a five-minute speech, followed by a five-minute question and answer meeting on their work that was supposed to solve a global problem — drug-resistance. This is a global antibiotics (抗生素) problem.

Fan said her attention was drawn to these drugs a few years ago, when her grandmother became very ill and was “saved by antibiotics”.

“Our communities want science to solve the world’s hardest challenges. This year’s finalists have truly encouraged us to solve real-world problems,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice-president of corporate affairs at 3M. “We believe they will do more on their continued journey.”

Fan has a great interest in science, which Fan said she found to be “fun.” She is now interested in becoming a doctor because of her interest in biology.

    28. When can Fan’s invention be used?

    A. When people need clean liquid.    B. When people want to clean cloth.

    C. When antibiotics need to be tested.   D. When simple medical treatment is needed.

    29. What did the finalists do during the first two days in Minnesota?

    A. They discussed serious global problems.

    B. They gave a short talk to a group of people.

    C. They entered competitions through teamwork.

    D. They asked and answered questions in a meeting.

    30. Which of the following excited Fan’s interest in antibiotics?

    A. Science in labs.         B. Her biology courses.

    C. Her grandmother’s illness.       D. A family trip to New York City.

    31. What did Rutherford express in Paragraph 6?

    A. Her praise for the finalists’ achievements.

    B. Her strong will to solve real-world problems.

    C. Her worry about science communities’ future.

    D. Her support for science leaders around the world.

    D

Science experiments dont always go as planned, but that doesnt mean you cant learn from them. Recently, Australian scientists learned something unexpected about magpies(喜鹊) when they tried to put trackers(跟踪仪) on them to learn more about their habits.

The birds the scientists hoped to study were Australian magpies. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to protect the area they live in.

The researchers wished to try a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds fly and what they do during a normal day. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting(适应) to the environment as the world warms up because of climate(气候) change.

To keep the trackers on the birds without causing flying problems, the researchers developed a special harness, by which they can fix trackers to magpies. It was tough, so it wouldn’t come off by accident.

There was just one problem—the birds didn’t like the trackers. The researchers placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual: An adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its harness.

In a few hours, most of the other magpies had also been freed from their harnesses. By the third day, none of the birds had trackers anymore. “The birds are much cleverer than we thought,” said Dominique Potvin, one of the scientists.

The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else: Magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping gets nothing from others.

This is called “rescue behavior” and it’s not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to think about a good way to track these clever birds.

    32. Why did scientists fix trackers to magpies?

    A. To improve the trackers.    B. To know of magpies’ habits.

    C. To test the use for the trackers.   D. To find out the magpie’s population.

    33. What are scientists worried about in paragraph 3?

    A. The little food for magpies.

    B. Magpies’ long-distance flying.

    C. The damage caused by climate change.

    D. Magpies having trouble getting used to climate change.

    34. What can we learn about magpies from the last two paragraphs?

    A. They will have little room to live in.

    B. They offer each other help willingly.

    C. They just want to be praised for their behavior.

    D. They are the cleverest animals in the world.

    35. Which can be the best title for the text?

    A. Magpies Teach Scientists an Unexpected Lesson

    B. Climate Change Makes Magpies More Difficult

    C. The Trackers Help Magpies Get Used to Nature

    D. Magpies Are Adjusting to The Trackers on Their Bodies

    第二节 读后续写(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Class, please line up! Let’s welcome Marti,” said Ms. Baroni, our tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher.

I was excited that my best friend Marti would be taking lessons, too.

Everyone said, “Hi.” Marti went red in the face.

“You don’t need to be shy here,” I said to Marti in a quiet voice. “Everyone’s really nice.”

After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into groups. Even though I was a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni told us to practice together. “Jenna, why don’t you show Marti some basic kicks?”

I said sure and showed her a front kick. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as my shoulder. “Great job, Marti! Let me show you something,” said Ms. Baroni. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti. I leaned (倚靠) against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she received from Ms. Baroni.

I practiced my form half-heartedly. “What if Marti became better than me? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student?” I couldn’t help thinking.

    “Watch your form!”

“Who is Ms. Baroni speaking to?” I wondered. I turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at me. Nothing could have been worse.

At the end of class, I took my bag and hurried outside to find my mom. I had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now I wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress our teacher with her skills. Honestly, I felt a little jealous (忌妒的) of her. And as Marti turned into a star student, I became less and less excited about tae kwon do.

One day, as we walked down the hallway at school, Marti said, “Ms. Baroni thinks I’m ready to take the test for the next level.”

I was surprised. “It’s harder than you think. Two judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points,” I said.

Marti looked disappointed (失望的). “You don’t think I’m good enough to take the test yet?”

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1: I felt my face get hot, and I explained, “I didn’t say that.” ___________________

    ________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2: “I haven’t been a very good friend,” I thought sadly. ______________________
