Every time I stare at the rows of jars filled with my parents’ homemade tomato sauce, I wonder: “Should I really use one?”
I have been keeping these jars like precious treasures. No matter how hard I try to find alternatives, nothing compares. Store bought sauce? It doesn’t taste right. Even if I try to recreate it, it will never taste the same.
While growing up, I hated the tomato season. My parents would use the basement to ripen the tomatoes they had collected locally in September. Like the other Italian families in the area, we would then take them to the garage when they were ripe enough. There they were cleaned and boiled.
Having been stewed (炖), whole tomatoes were passed through my father’s homemade machine to. Separate the sauce from the skins. Jars at the ready. We filled them with sauce and seasoning. The jars would be hot for a few days, sealed (密封) to keep their own heat. They would then be lined up and ready to use.
This tradition was hard to carry on when my father got ill. After being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2019, he spent most of his time in hospital. In September that year he came home, and on the weekend we decided to continue the tradition. I have glorious memories of that day as we once again made the sauce. It was a beautiful but short-lived moment. My father died soon after.
I can’t keep these jars forever. But it doesn’t make it any easier to open one. Every time I go to reach for one, something stops me. My mother, ever practical, is visiting us recently and just stares at them.
“You should use these or they will go to waste.”
What will it feel like to use that last jar? It would mean the end of an era. Who knows? Maybe it’s time to bring new traditions into life.
    24. What stops the author from using the tomato sauce?
    A. It has gone bad. B. He doesn’t like tomato sauce.
    C. He keeps it for future use. D. He values it too much.
    25. What do Para.3 and Para.4 mainly talk about?
    A. The tomato harvest. B. The homemade machine.
    C. The fruitful tomato season. D. The making of tomato sauce.
    26. What will the author most probably do next?
    A. Open one jar. B. Keep the jars.
    C. Collect tomatoes. D. Make tomato sauce.
    27. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
    A. Practical. B. Faithful. C. Loving. D. Sensitive.

Video conferencing has been around for more than 20 years. Until the Covid-19 pandemic, though, you would find that many people needing to attend a meeting remotely would be calling from a real conference room full of their teammates. Today, we’re routinely holding video conferences that are 100% virtual (虚拟). And this is creating a problem that technology can’t fix.
The problem is us, specifically the fact that we haven’t evolved (进化) socially to the point where we can bear much separation. So much of our well-being and work productivity is decided on how close we are physically. The removal of that for any period of time can be severely damaging. One aspect surprisingly affected by social distancing is laughter.
Normally people laugh about 18 times per day. And 97% of that time we’re laughing with others—we are 30 times more likely to laugh with others than to laugh alone. Think about it; how often does it happen—when you and your friends laugh at something, is that something actually funny? Research shows that 80% of what people laugh at is really not that funny.
So why do people laugh? They laugh in order to laugh with others. Just as everyone starts yawning (打哈欠) when just one person yawns, most people can’t help but laugh when those around them do. This is why TV comedy shows often use prerecorded laugh tracks (音轨).
Laughing in response to other people’s laughing is not just a behavioral phenomenon. When we laugh, our body produces two key chemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings of pleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. In fact, studies show that people can stand 15% more pain simply by laughing for a few minutes beforehand. Laughter is also associated with higher motivation and productivity at work.
In today’s home-alone, virtual-team world, this is exactly what you as a team leader should be doing: for your team members to stay healthy and productive, you need to get them to laugh more and stress less.
    28. Why is video conferencing mentioned at the beginning?
    A. To show a fact. B. To entertain readers.
    C. To introduce the topic. D. To summarize the passage.
    29. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Laughing starts with yawning in groups.
    B. Laughing comes more easily in groups.
    C. Laugh tracks are popular in comedy shows.
    D. Laughing is uncontrollable in conferences.
    30. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
    A. Laughing with others is out of politeness.
    B. Laughing is the only way to reduce pain.
    C. Laughing improves physical and mental health.
    D. Laughing leads to a higher position in the workplace.
    31. What would the author most probably discuss next?
    A. Specific steps to produce laughter in a team.
    B. Other factors that may influence a team’s health.
    C. Ways to tell the real world from the virtual world.
    D. The importance of maintaining work productivity.

After taking a few steps back to get a running start, Hadj Benhalima dashed toward the building, pushed against its wall with his foot, pushed himself upward and stretched out his arm.
At the peak of his leap, he fingered off a light switch, more than 10 feet off the ground. The bright lights of a nearby barbershop went off instantly.
Groups of young athletes practicing Parkour—the practice of passing obstacle as in a man—made or natural environment through the use of running, vaulting (腾跃), jumping, climbing, rolling, and other movements in order to travel from one point to another in the quickest and most efficient way possible without the use of equipment—have been swinging around big French cities switching off wasteful shop signs at night, in an effort to fight light pollution and save energy.
These so—called Light Off operations have become extra popular in recent months, with France embarking on energy conservation efforts.
Paris, the City of Light, is a favorite target. While its landmark monuments now go dark earlier than usual, many store signs still stay lit all night.
“Everyone can contribute in their own way” to save energy, said Kevin Ha, the leader of the Paris—based Op he Spot Parkour group, with about 20 members. “We put our physical abilities to good use.”
Enforcing the orders in place of the authorities certainly enters a legal gray area. But the group said all the police officers they have met during their rounds have approved of their deeds—as long as it causes no damage.
    32. Which of the following options is NOT Parkour’s feature?
    A. It doesn’t need any tools to assist movement.
    B. It can only be practiced in an enclosed environment.
    C. It aims to travel from one point to another in the quickest way.
    D. It is practiced through running, vaulting, jumping, climbing, etc.
    33. Why do young athletes in Paris take part in Parkour?
    A. To invite more youths to join them in competition.
    B. To overcome physical boundaries and build fitness.
    C. To reduce the consequences of energy consumption.
    D. To tour around feeling the unique beauty of Paris at night.
    34. What does Kevin Ha think of the Parkour participants?
    A. They are honest. B. They are creative. C. They are selfish. D. They are optimistic.
    35. How did the police react to the Light Off operations of the young?
    A. They gave their unspoken agreement.
    B. They took these actions as illegal.
    C. They believed there must be damage caused.
    D. They held an indifferent attitude towards them.

It was a freezing January night. Lydia Chen was struggling home from school. How she hated the heavy snow and everything else about Vancouver,Canada.
How she missed China!"I hate it here!I want to fly back to my homeland!"Lydia thought.
Arriving home,Lydia checked her mailbox. There was an invitation to Maggie's birthday party this coming weekend. However, Lydia didn't want to go. She felt embarrassed at the thought of being at a party with a bunch of boys and girls she barely knew. She closed her eyes and pictured her hometown at this time of the year, the red Spring Festival couplets, the red lanterns, window decorations and paper-cuttings here and there. In the stands along the streets, various Spring Festival goods were on display. What happy days!
Lydia Chen sighed deeply and entered the kitchen to find her mother. She was busy cooking. "Maybe I should go just once for Mum. She is so worried that it's difficult for me to make friends in my new school." Lydia went over and tied an apron around her waist.
As she was washing dishes, she told her mother that she had been invited to a birthday party at the weekend. Mum smiled, saying that she would be happier in their new home here. Lydia nodded, thinking Vancouver could never be her home. Mum drove Lydia to the birthday party on Saturday evening.
Maggie welcomed her at the door and led her into the dining room. To her surprise, over twenty students from her class were seated around the table waiting for her. They were drinking, laughing and chatting loudly after a simple greeting to Lydia. However, she loved being ignored since she could be herself. She decided to silently give the birthday gift to Maggie without being noticed. As she was taking out the Chinese paper-cutting she prepared with the help of her mum, Maggie yelled out, "Amazing! How did you make it?" The others joined, staring at Lydia in admiration. Lydia's face was shining with excitement. "Maybe I could fit in with people here-a little." she thought.

【30题详解】推理判断题。根据文章第五段的“When we laugh, our body produces two key chemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings of pleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea about how serious her deafness is.” Sure enough, Murphy went home and did exactly as the doctor told him. He stood about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she was cutting some vegetables and said, “Betty, what’s for dinner?” He heard no answer. He moved about 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He moved 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He got fed up and moved right behind her, about an inch away, and asked again” Betty, what’s for dinner?” Betty said, “ That’s the fourth time you asked me. They are meatballs.”
