For Stevens Point locals in the US, the city is flooded with delicious fried fish. Here are four top choices for the community to have a try.
    Hilltop Pub&Grill
Hilltop Pub&Grill first opened in the 1980s and took the Stevens Point community by storm with its delicious food and unique decoration style. Its fried fish are beloved due to the use of “high-quality North Atlantic fish, with a light beer batter (面糊)”.
    The Final Score Bar&Grill
The Final Score Bar&Grill aimed to become a local hot spot in 2001 when Jim Billings, the owner, took charge of the business. Billings feels that their five batter choices set them apart from their neighboring bars. Besides, various wines are available.
    Point After Pub&Grill
Point After Pub&Grill started serving delicious food and cold beers in a welcoming environment in 2009. But its history runs much longer. “Before it was Point After Pub&Grill, it had been Northside Bar for 30 plus years,” explained Molski, the owner. Molski feels that the pub’s four special batter choices and other fish specials are what help make it an area landmark.
    Two Harps Pub
This Irish pub opened its doors to the public in 2017 and has been drawing fans and locals ever since. “I had done my career for a long time and was kind of bored with it,” said Nick Moore, the owner. “And this opportunity fell into my lap, so I went with it. It really made sense to open up an Irish bar.” The growing pub advises guests to try a cold beer with their Friday fried fish.

Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over night. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts (轮班) in a factory, the other optionshave become only too clear. " This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. " she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
    4. What does the author think of his summer holiday?
    A. It was no holiday for him at all.
    B. It brought him nothing but suffering.
    C. It was a relief from his hard work at school.
    D. It offered him a chance to make more friends.
    5. What can we infer about most college students?
    A. They do better in the real world.
    B. They are confident when they work.
    C. They think too highly of themselves.
    D. They are expert at handling machines.
6 What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers?
    A. A low income B. The lack of security
    C. An unstable location D. Less break
    7. How did the working experiences change the author?
    A. He became responsible for his work.
    B. He learned to be more practical at work.
    C. He began to respect blue-collar workers.
    D. He came to appreciate his college education.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D

Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.
In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist.
How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood(情绪) and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort.
Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.”
    8. What does Ellen Langer’s study show?
    A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionist B. Translation makes people knowledgeable.
    C. Simpler jobs require greater caution. D. Moderate effort produces the best result.
    9. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______.
    A. is good at handling pressure B. works hard to become successful
    C. a has a natural talent for his job. D. gets on well with his co-workers
    10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people.
    B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless.
    C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.
    D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.
    11. What does the text seem to advocate?
    A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family.
    C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment.
D 9. B 10. C 11. A
根据第一段“Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.(许多人认为工作到最大限度是成功的秘诀,但研究发现,适度的工作也会带来成果。)”和第二段中“In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all.(在哈佛大学Ellen Langer领导的一项研究中,研究人员要求人们将句子翻译成一种新的虚构的语言。那些事先适度练习这门语言的受试者比那些全力练习或根本不练习的受试者犯的错误要少。)”可知,第一段提出主题,即适度的工作也会带来成果,接着第二段作者用Ellen Langer的研究来证明这一点,由此可推知,Ellen Langer的研究表明适度的努力会产生最好的结果。故选D。
    【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下文“while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office.(而他那些在会议室吃饭时闲聊的同事们则在角落办公室里得到不屑的目光。)”
根据最后一段中“Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity.(此外,许多研究表明,积极的情绪能够提高生产力和创造力。 )”可知,积极的情绪能够提高生产力和创造力,由此可推知,愉快的心情有助于创造性思维。故选C。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.(但研究发现,适度的工作也会带来成果)”和第二段中“High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist.(高尽责性与低工作表现有关,尤其是在简单的工作中,追求完美并不值得。)” 故选A。
    D
Quantum (量子) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor.
For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.”
As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum.
After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum.
The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin (幅度)” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”
Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.
    12. About Johnson’s concerns, the author feels________.
    A. sympathetic B. unconcerned C. doubtful D. excited
    13. What leads to Taylor’s optimism (乐观) about quantum computing?
    A. His dominance in physics. B. The competition in the field.
    C. His confidence in PyQuantum. D. The investment of tech companies.
    14. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
    A. easy. B. cool. C. useful. D. resistant.
    15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor?
    B. Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology?
    C. Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being?
D Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?
A 13. C 14. A 15. D
由第二段中的“This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. ‘What’s new,’ Johnson wrote, ‘is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.’(这正是让约翰逊恼火的一种炒作。 故选A项。
由第四段中的“Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum.(泰勒和约翰逊一样对炒作感到担忧,但泰勒表示这些担忧不适用于PyQuantium公司)”和倒数第二段的“The company, he says, is closer than any other firm ‘by a very large margin (幅度)’ to building a ‘useful’ quantum computer, one that ‘solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.’ He adds, ‘People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.’(他说,该公司比任何其他公司都更接近于‘以明显优势’制造一台‘有用的’量子计算机,该量子计算机可以‘解决一个我们无法解决的有影响力的问题。’)”
由第三段中的“As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. (随着量子计算吸引了更多的关注和资金,研究人员可能会误导投资者、记者、公众,最糟糕的是,误导他们自己的工作潜力)”和“But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” (但约翰逊表示,量子计算的某些方面使得它特别prone被炒作,也许是因为“‘量子'代表了一些你不应该理解的酷东西。”)”可知,量子计算是一种很酷的东西,吸引了更多的关注和资金,说明它成为了话题点,很容易被炒作,prone意为“容易的(easy)”。故选A项。
由第二段中的“This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. ‘What’s new,’ Johnson wrote, ‘is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.’(这正是让约翰逊恼火的一种炒作。他担心研究人员做出了无法兑现的承诺。约翰逊写道:‘新的是,现在量子计算研究人员有可能获得数百万美元。’)”,第三段中的“As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. (随着量子计算吸引了更多的关注和资金,研究人员可能会误导投资者、记者、公众,最糟糕的是,误导他们自己的工作潜力)”和最后一段“Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition ‘by a wide margin’, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.(PyQuantum真的能像泰勒所说的那样‘以明显优势’领先所有竞争吗?
Looking for a relaxing holiday? Need to refresh yourself after a stressful few months? ____16____
First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters” – meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it. ____17____ In general, the term is often used to refer to a commercial establishment that provides a wide range of services for health, fitness, weight loss, beauty and relaxation. This may include exercise classes, massage, mud baths, body treatment, and so on.
____18____ In Japan, traditional hot springs have attracted visitors for centuries. And thermal (温泉) baths have been found in the ruins of the Cretan palace of Knossos that date back to the 2nd millennium BC.
____19____ They established a number of towns around thermal waters. In the 18th century, spas became the fashionable places to go on holiday. Spas in the UK were very popular with British royals.
A typical day in Carlsbad in the 19th century went as follows. Visitors got up at 6:00 am to drink the waters and be serenaded by a band. Next, came a light breakfast, a bath in the waters, and then lunch. In the afternoon, visitors went sight-seeing, walked or attended concerts. ____20____ Guests returned to their hotels at about 9pm to rest until six the following morning. Visitors would stay for as long as a month.
Today, spa treatments are more popular than ever, although drinking the water isn’t as common as it used to be. But of course, if you want some mineral water, you can always get a bottle of Perrier from the mini-bar!
    A. Here’re some tips for you.
B Perhaps you need to go to a spa!
    C. Of course, there’s nothing new about spas.
    D. After dinner, there were musical performances.
    E. Spas were introduced to the UK in the 17th century.
    F. But nowadays, a “spa” can mean a variety of things.
    G. It was the Romans who made spas popular in Europe.
B 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. D
根据第一段“Looking for a relaxing holiday? Need to refresh yourself after a stressful few months?(想要一个轻松的假期吗?在经历了几个月的压力后,需要恢复精神吗)”以及第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa(首先,spa是什么)”可知第一段是先提出问题,紧接着第二段进一步解释了水疗,所以设空处是衔接上下文的内容,即提出水疗,选项“Perhaps you need to go to a spa!(也许你需要体验一下水疗)”符合语义,故选B。
    【17题详解】
根据第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters”– meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it.(首先,spa到底是什么?传统上,温泉是你喝一些水或在里面洗澡)”可知,第二段段首先提出什么是spa,然后解释了传统定义,那么意味着传统之外的定义,即新的定义或现代的定义。选项F“But nowadays, a “spa” can mean a variety of things.(但是现在,spa可以有各种各样的意思)”符合语义,故选F。
根据第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters”– meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it.(首先,spa到底是什么?传统上,温泉是你喝一些水或在里面洗澡)”可知,第二段已经解释过spa的传统及现代定义。所以此处关于什么是温泉大家已经比较熟知,因此会作一个总结概括,即关于温泉定义已经讲述清楚。选项以及下句“In Japan, traditional hot springs have attracted visitors for centuries.(在日本,几个世纪以来,温泉吸引了很多游客)”可知,温泉已经不是新鲜事物。选项C“Of course, there’s nothing new about spas.(当然,水疗已经不是说明新鲜事)”符合语义,故选C。
根据第四段“They established a number of towns around thermal waters. In the 18th century, spas became the fashionable places to go on holiday. Spas in the UK were very popular with British royals.(他们在温泉周围建立了许多城镇。他们在温泉周围建立了许多城镇。在18世纪,温泉浴场成为了一种时尚的度假场所。英国皇室很喜欢泡温泉。在18世纪,温泉浴场成为了一种时尚的度假场所。英国皇室很喜欢泡温泉)”可知,此处讲述温泉的建立,普及与皇室的关系。因此总起论述是皇室促成了温泉的出现及普及。选项G“It was the Romans who made spas popular in Europe.(是罗马人使水疗在欧洲流行起来的)”符合语义,故选G。
根据倒数第二段“A typical day in Carlsbad in the 19th century went as follows. Visitors got up at 6:00 am to drink the waters and be serenaded by a band. Next, came a light breakfast, a bath in the waters, and then lunch. In the afternoon, visitors went sight-seeing, walked or attended concerts.(19世纪卡尔斯巴德典型的一天是这样的。游客们早上6点起床,喝着水,听着乐队的小夜曲。接下来是简单的早餐,在水里洗个澡,然后是午餐。下午,游客们去观光、散步或听音乐会)”可知,游客们一天的安排是按照时间顺序安排的,因此此处为下午过后,及晚饭时间的安排。选项D“After dinner, there were musical performances.(晚饭过后,会有音乐表演)”符合语义,故选D。
