Tara took down the first mask. It was a golden dragon’s face with large red eyes. “Of course, this mask is for you, Tahir. It is customary for the eldest of the King to wear a dragon costume to the Golden Festival of Light,” she explained to Tom as she handed the mask to Mahir. Then she took down the second mask. “And this is your mask, Tom,” she said and handed him the mask. “This is the snow leopard. Legends say that the snow leopard rescued Princess Kia from a terrible death.”
“Who was Princess Kia?” asked Tom.
“She was one of our ancestors,” said Tara. “She was a very brave and wise woman. One day, she heard that one of her farmers had lost his yaks. Somebody had stolen them. She decided to go and speak to the administrators of the region about the problem. The administrators for each region live and work in a castle. These castles are usually on a hill or mountain top. While Princess Kia was riding up to the castle, it started to snow. It snowed very heavily and she got lost. Her horse stumbled and fell. It was icy cold and she lost consciousness. While she was unconscious, she had a dream. A powerful animal with snow-white fur came and carried her on its back up the icy mountain paths and left her at the gates of the castle. When she woke up, she was in a bed in the castle. They told her that they had found her outside the castle gates. ‘The snow leopard saved my life’, she said.”
“It’s just a story,” said Mahir, “but many people believe that when a good person is in danger a snow leopard will come to rescue them. The snow leopard is a symbol of strength and courage.”
Tom took the white mask with the silver spots and the emerald green eyes. “Thank you very much, Tara. It’s beautiful,” he said.
Then she took down the third mask. “This is my mask,” she said. It was the face of a beautiful woman. It too had emerald green eyes.
“This is the mask of Princess Kia,” said Tara. “Let’s hope that you don’t have to rescue me tomorrow night,” she laughed. But Tom felt a cold chill when she said the words and a shiver ran down his spine.
“Something bad is going to happen tomorrow night,” he thought. “I can feel it.”
“Look at the time,” said Mahir. “It’s nearly 8. We’d better go down for dinner.”
Tom pushed the uneasy thoughts to the back of his mind and followed Mahir and Tara out of the room. They were laughing about something and soon Tom was laughing too.

Speed-reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and WeChat to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of a certain text. Surrounded with information from our electronic devices, it would be impossible to cope if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend encourages people to enjoy reading slowly, listing benefits beyond the intelligent stimulation.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smartphones. They sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn’t exchanging ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. According to the Journal, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the old-fashioned way of reading before the Internet and smartphones.
Slow readers, such as The Atlantic’s Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to sympathize. Another study published last year in science showed that reading novels slowly helps people understand other’s mental states and beliefs, a fundamental skill in building relationships.
Yet technology has made us less attentive readers. Screens have changed our reading patterns from the straight and information left-to-right sequence to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information. Reading text punctuated with links leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says Patrick Kingsey from The Guardian. Because of the Internet, he says, we have become very good at collecting a wide range of interesting news, but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, reflect, and relate all these facts to each other.
Slow reading means a return to an uninterrupted, straight pattern, in a quiet environment free of distractions. Aim for 30minutesa day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. “You can squeeze in that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments, you pick up a meaningful work of literature, ” Kelly said. “Reach for your e-reader, if you like. Kindles make books like War and Peace less heavy, not less substantive, and also ensure you’ll never lose your place. ”
28. The book club in Wellington mentioned in Paragraph 2 shows________.
A. the increasing number of club readers B. the decline of electronic devices
C. the importance of exchanging ideas D. the new trend of slow reading
29. According to Patrick Kingsley, people are stupider partly because of________.
A. the lack of reflection B. the straight, left-to-right screen
C. a wide range of interesting news D. a non-stop reading pattern
30. According to the passage, slow reading________.
A. promotes the current technology advances
B. contributes to understanding among people
C. provides people with a quiet environment
D. cures the memory loss of elderly people
31 What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call on us to read slowly.
B. To emphasize the benefit of Reading Clubs.
C. To tell us we are entering the Internet Age.
D. To highlight the influence of Speed Reading.

If you think about it, work-life balance is a strange ambition for a fulfilling life. Balance is about stasis: if our lives were ever in balance-parents happy, kids taken care of, work working-then our overriding thought would be to shout “Nobody move!” and pray all would stay perfect forever. This false hope is made worse by the categories themselves. They imply that work is bad, and life is good. And so the challenge, we are told, is to balance the heaviness of work with the lightness of life.
Yet work is not the opposite of life. It is instead a part of life-just as family is, as are friends and community. All of these aspects of living have their share of uplifting moments and moments that drag us down. The same is true of work. Treat work the same way you do life: by maximizing what you love.
We have interviewed several anesthesiologists (麻醉师) about the thrills they feel in their jobs. One said he loved the thrill of holding each patient hovering at that one precise point between life and death. Another said she loved the bedside conversations before the operation aiming to calm the panic that affects many patients. Another was drawn mostly to the anesthetic mechanism and has devoted himself to defining precisely how each drug does what it does.
Think of your life’s many different activities as threads. Some are black and some are white. But some of these activities appear to be made of a different substance. These activities contain all the tell-tale signs of love: before you do them, you find yourself looking forward to them; while you’re doing them, time speeds up and you find yourself in flow; and after you’ve done them, you feel energetic. These are your red threads, and research by the Mayo Clinic suggests that doctors who weave the fabric of their life with at least 20% red threads are significantly less likely to experience burnout.
The simplest way for you to do this is to spend a week in love with your job. During the week, any time you find yourself feeling one of the signs of love write down exactly what you were doing in the column “Love”. And any time you find yourself feeling the inverse write down what you were doing in the column “Loathe”. By the end of the week you will see a list of activities in your “Love” column, which create in you a positive feeling, one that draws you in and lifts you up.
Our goal should be to, little by little, week by week, intentionally unbalance all aspects of our work toward the former and away from the latter. Not simply to make us feel better, but so that our colleagues, our friends and our family can all benefit from us at our very best.

Exploring Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Gaining a richer and deeper understanding of psychology can help people achieve insights into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people. ____36____
One important benefit from a psychology major is that it teaches the student about the human mind and why people act in various manners. Not all psychology majors will become psychologists. ____37____ All people must interact with others whether it is at home or at a workplace. People respond to these interactions in a wide number of ways. For instance, the person may not know why he or she is bothered by a specific action at work. However, the person who has studied psychology has an obvious advantage in this area.
Psychology also offers the individual insight into himself or herself. As the person learns about the human mind, how it works and why people behave in specific manners, the person may also begin to recognize both harmful and helpful thought patterns in himself or herself.
This may lead the person to an increased level of self-awareness. ____38____ It also shows the person where he or she possesses strength and crucial skills for the modern world. Individuals who are more self-aware are more likely to accomplish their goals and dreams.
____39____ A person may enter a vast field where psychologists and those trained in psychology work. These areas include industrial psychology, school psychology, private practice, organizational behavioral fields, law enforcement and virtually every other field.
____40____ As stated, there are a number of career opportunities from which a psychology major may choose.

B. It shows the individual what areas the person needs to strengthen.
C. As a result, psychology becomes an incredibly popular college major.
D. A psychology major examines the science of human behavior and mental processes.
E. All fields have the opportunity to benefit from the guidance that psychology can offer.
