Children's Literature-Research Tips: Finding Information on Authors
Your author study requires you to write, in at least 3 pages, a summary of what the author has written, how the works have been received, what awards the author has been given, as well as any connections you have made by reading much of the author's published books.
Below is a list of places to find such information. You will have most success with the items, if you look at them in the order they are listed.

    Biography in Context
You may find many of the same resources in this database as you found in Literature Resource Center. The two databases are produced by the same company. However, there is enough different information that it is worth checking.
Again, enter your author's name, last name first, like this: Erdrich, Louise.
    Blooms Literary Reference Collection

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water(停滞不前), just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there's a dark period in-between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, "Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there." My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.
24.Why did the author decide to write a novel?
    A. Because she hated her previous jobs.
    B. Because her parents and friends had encouraged her to do so.
    C. Because she wanted to pursue her own dream of writing a novel.
    D. Because she graduated from university with a good degree in English Literature.
25.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. She became less stubborn.
    B. She became more stubborn.
    C. She suddenly lost confidence.
    D. She gradually gained confidence.
26.Who agreed to publish the author's first novel?
    A. An agent who she signed with.
    B. A rights assistant she once worked with.
    C. An agent who advised her to send her novel out to agents.
    D. A publisher who she once worked for as a rights assistant.
27.Which of the following words can best describe the author's experience as a writer?
    A. Tough but rewarding. B. Interesting and smooth.
    C. Difficult but thrilling. D. Complicated and fruitless.
    C
In the heart of the Antarctic there's a unique post office staffed by a dedicated team and surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery that includes around 3,000 penguins. The "Penguin Post Office" is a nearly 80-year-old building on British-owned Goudier Island, which is about the size of a football field.
Each year, the post office hires four postmasters to live on the island from November to March. In addition to taking care of the 70,000 cards posted each year for delivery to 100 countries, the employees are in charge of wildlife monitoring, which includes counting penguins, and environmental data collection. They are also collectively responsible for maintaining the historic sites and tending on thousands of tourists who come by boat. Depending on the specific role, salaries range from about $US 1,600 per month to $US 2,300.
"The experience offers a different and new viewpoint on your role in the planet," Camilla Nichol, the CEO of the post office said. "It's an extraordinary place". While applicants are initially intrigued by the penguins, they are warned it's not an easy job. Employees must live without running water, internet or mobile phone service for five months. The team live together in a small room, and share a single bathroom and camping toilet. "You might be working 12-hour days. There's not much time for rest and relaxation." added Camilla Nichol. The employees are also responsible for keeping the site clean, which includes spending a lot of time brushing penguin waste off rocks.
The five-month role is widely sought-after. The post office gets thousands of applications for the postmaster position every year. In 2022, four women have been selected to run the world's most remote post office in Antarctica among 6,000 people who expressed an interest in the roles. Successful candidates do a week of training in Cambridge before heading to the post office in November, where they remain until March the following year.
"This is my first time in Antarctica and I'm very excited to set foot on the white continent," said Hilton, one of the four postmasters.
28.Which of the following best describes the job?

29.For what do people apply for the position?
    A. Location. B. Penguins. C. Scenery. D. Salaries.
30.What can we learn from Camilla Nichol's words?
    A. You may become extraordinary.
    B. The job may improve your life.
    C. The job is relaxing but poorly conditioned.
    D. You may have a new attitude towards the world.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. The Coolest Job B. The Best-paid Position
    C. The Dedicated Staff D. The Unique Adventure
    D
One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we'd make better decisions if only we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. It's true that there is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationship (for example, they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger is present.
In the real world though, it's worth realizing that feeling anxious once in a while is extremely common. It communicates to others that you care, and what's more, it's probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: if you're a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagine possible plots, including bad ones.
The important thing, if you are a worrywart, is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don't bury your head in the sand Instead, act on your fears—do the research as well as preparation, so rather than walking blindly into that which you fear, you meet the challenge in full readiness.
When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or an interview, you needn't see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is reason for cheer, too. Your nerves are a sign of your watchfulness.
Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness you're your advantage.
32.What can we infer from the first paragraph about anxiety?
    A. It can be the only reason for all bad decisions.
    B. It can make us more willing to take risks.
    C. It can enable us to be more focused.
    D. It can stop us from thinking logically.
33.What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Feeling anxious is more likely to put people at risk.
    B. Anxious people are less sensitive to danger.
    C. Feeling anxious occasionally is a sign of intelligence.
    D. Anxious people have difficulty discovering liars.
34.How should we deal with anxiety in the author's opinion?
    A. Treat it as a minor feeling. B. Avoid being defeated by it.
    C. Regard it as our enemy. D. Take action to control it.
35.What is the theme of the passage?
    A. Tips on how to keep a good mood.
    B. Effective ways to prevent anxiety.
    C. Common misunderstandings about anxiety.
    D. Unexpected benefits of anxiety.

Jesse and Vern used to be totally strangers living in two towns hundreds of miles apart. Their friendship started with an orange shirt in a bottle 22 years ago, when computers and Internet were not available.
8-year-old Jesse lived a simple and happy life in a small town with his parents. School was starting next week. The family would get Jesse a new set of clothing. Jesse was not so passionate for new clothes. After his father's persuasion, Jesse finally agreed to the shopping. Jesse tried on a pair of new pants, new shoes, and an orange shirt. He didn't like the pants and shoes much. But he did like the orange shirt.
School started, and Jesse put on his new orange shirt. All the other kids had new clothes too, but his orange shirt, in Jesse's mind, was the most handsome of all. He wore it almost every day. Even when it was dirty, he would insist that it be washed and ready, so he could wear it the next day.
Time passed quickly and Jesse had grown over two inches. But his orange shirt was not growing with him. One day, his mother asked him to go to the grocery store to pick up some things for supper and reminded him not to wear that small orange shirt any more, which looked funny on Jesse.
Jesse ignored what his mother told him. In the store two little girls laughed at his tight orange shirt. Feeling embarrassed, Jesse picked up his groceries and hurried home. Getting home, he told his mother that he wouldn't wear that shirt any more. His mother said, "Jesse, since the lovely shirt is too small on you, maybe someone else needs it." "I really hope it goes to a lovely boy. But who can it be?" said Jesse. The next morning, Jesse's father told Jesse that he had a good idea, saying he would take Jesse to the river.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

    第二节
    答案:36-40 FECAD
    解析:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些建立自信的方法。

Whether you like it or not, people make judgments about you based upon how you dress.(不管你喜不喜欢,人们都是根据你的穿着来评价你的。)" 故选A。
40.上文"You can increase your confidence by seeking out one new challenge at a time.(你可以通过一次寻找一个新的挑战来增加你的信心。)" Move on to the next one when one challenge is successfully achieved.(成功完成一个挑战后继续下一个挑战。)"

56.sitting;57.that;58.to;59.better;60.written;61.them;62.an;63.generally;64.response;65.are
故填that。
故填to。

故填them。

故填are。
    Dear Harry,
Hearing that you are looking for a part-time English commentator, I am writing to apply for the position.
First of all, having studied English for about ten years, I have a good command of English and I can communicate with foreigners in English fluently. Secondly, since I grew up here, I am quite familiar with the history and traditions of our cities, as well as our school. Furthermore, as a kind and brave and outgoing girl, I can get along well with different people. I am sure foreigners will be satisfied with my thoughtful and excellent service.
I would deeply appreciate it if you could give me the precious chance to serve as a commentator. Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
When they got to the riverbank, Jesse's father took out a large plastic bottle together with the orange shirt. "Here's my idea," he said. "Let's put your orange shirt in this bottle and float it down the river." He also told Jesse to write his name and address on a note. Jesse said, "I hope whoever finds it will know it's my favorite shirt. I expect to hear from them someday." They put the shirt and the note into the bottle and tightened the cover. Away it floated.
Little Vern was fishing with his father in a small boat down the river. Suddenly they spotted something floating. They approached it. It was a plastic bottle. When Vern's father opened it, he found a lovely orange shirt, just what he had always wanted for his son. Vern tried it on. It was perfect. Then they discovered the note with Jesse's name and address. "It's a miracle," Vern said joyfully. Vern wrote a letter to Jesse. After so many years, they became lifelong friends, which was all because of the orange shirt.
