Best Cycling Holiday Destinations In Europe
    Girona,Spain
Girona is surrounded by fantastic and easily accessible cycle routes that pretty much offer any riding you would ever need or want. The relatively traffic-free roads mean that there is little trouble in getting out of the town and into the hills. Girona’s old town itself is a beauty and with plenty of places serving great food and great coffee, there’s a certain magic to the place.
    Algarve,Portugal
Portugal is a cycling destination that has grown in popularity thanks to the large variety of roads in the country. It is not too dissimilar to what you’ll find in the most popular cycling regions, but Portugal just feels that little bit less main stream. Away from the bike, there is also plenty of food to sink your teeth into and local wines to try.
    Northern Scotland,UK
One of the best places to tour in all of Europe is in fact Scotland. Particularly adventurous cyclists can take advantage of Scotland’s rules on wild camping-Scottish law allows members of the public the right to roam(漫游),while English law does not. It’s a totally liberating way to explore a place and Scotland might just be one of the best ones to do it due to the beautiful scenery and rural landscapes.
    Julian Alps,Slovenia
Slovenia is one of the relatively new kids on the block when it comes to European cycling getaways. A great destination for mountain bikers and road cyclists alike, the country has plenty of brilliant off-road routes and rideable, tricky roads that take you high up into the Julian Alps. It’s no surprise once you’ve ridden here that the country punches well above its weight in terms of producing world class bike racers.
    1. What do the first two destinations have in common?
    A. They supply local wines for visitors.
    B. They are completely traffic free.
    C. They have fewer riding routes.
    D. They serve delicious food.
    2. Which of the following is your best choice if you love adventure?
    A. Algarve,Portugal.
    B. Girona,Spain.
    C. Northern Scotland,UK.
    D. Julian Alps,Slovenia.
    3. What do we know about Julian Alps, Slovenia?
    A. It produces brilliant mountain climbers.
    B. It has a short cycling history.
    C. It welcomes wild campers.
    D. It is known for rural landscapes.

Eight years ago. Al Nixon decided to begin each day from a bench with a spectacular view of St. Petersburg’s waterfront in Florida. “I call it ‘life rising’ because watching a sunrise makes me feel positive and centered before I start my day,” says Nixon, who works for the city’s water department. It is Nixon’s own version of daily motivation.
A year later, a woman stopped to say hello, and she said something that changed his perspective on his daily ritual. “She said, ‘You know, every morning when I see you sitting here, I know that everything is going to be OK,’” Nixon recalls. “That was when I knew: I needed to pay attention to the people walking past. I needed to make eye contact and let people know that we matter to each other.”
Instead of staring straight ahead at the waterfront, Nixon started smiling at people and striking up conversations. And pretty soon, more than a few early risers began joining him on the bench, sometimes unburdening themselves and telling him their relationship, career or personal problems. “I was happy to listen. I wanted them to walk away knowing they didn’t have to feel lonely,” Nixon, now 59, says. “When you’re in your 50s and 60s or beyond, a lot of people feel their purpose hasn’t been fulfilled. At this stage in life, this is definitely my purpose.”
So, every morning, weather permitting, Nixon rises at 4:30 a. m. He puts on a hat, sips a cup of coffee, and then drives seven miles to the waterfront, where he’ll stay for two hours. His presence, his openness to listen and his kindness towards strangers have led them to nickname him the Sunshine Mayor.
No matter what problem a person wants to air, Nixon lends an ear. But some people just sit down and don’t want to talk or share stories. They simply want to sit next to someone and share the silence. “A woman stopped once and said, ‘I just want to sit here with you,’” Nixon recalls. “We stared at the water for an hour, and then she said thank you and walked away. She just wanted a moment of peace and to know she wasn’t alone. And in that moment, in that hour, on that morning, she truly wasn’t.”
    4. Why did Nixon decide to begin his day from the bench eight years ago?
    A. To develop a habit. B. To seek mental power.
    C. To enjoy seaside views. D. To interact with strangers.
    5. How might Nixon feel after hearing the woman’s words in paragraph 2?
    A. Inspired. B. Relaxed.
    C. Touched. D. Worried.
    6. What does Nixon’s nickname the Sunshine Mayor imply?
    A. He is laughed at by others.
    B. He is a responsible official.
    C. He warms strangers’ hearts.
    D. He likes sunny days particularly.
    7. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
    A. One has to learn to listen.
    B. Not everyone is a good storyteller.
    C. It’s not easy to fulfill different needs.
    D. Silent company matters to some people.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D
根据第一段中的““I call it ‘life rising’ because watching a sunrise makes me feel positive and centered before I start my day,” says Nixon, who works for the city’s water department. It is Nixon’s own version of daily motivation.(“我称之为‘生活的上升’,因为看日出能让我在开始新的一天之前感到积极和专注,”在该市水务部门工作的Nixon说。这是Nixon自己对日常动机的诠释)”可知,八年前,Nixon为了寻找精神力量,决定从长凳开始他的一天,故选B。
    【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“A year later, a woman stopped to say hello, and she said something that changed his perspective on his daily ritual.(一年后,一个女人停下来跟他打招呼,她说的话改变了他对日常生活的看法)”和Nixon所说的“That was when I knew: I needed to pay attention to the people walking past. I needed to make eye contact and let people know that we matter to each other.(这时我明白了:我需要注意路过的人。我需要眼神交流,让人们知道我们对彼此很重要)”可知,Nixon当时应该是很受启发的。故选A。
根据第三段中Nixon的行为和第四段中的“His presence, his openness to listen and his kindness towards strangers have led them to nickname him the Sunshine Mayor.(他的存在,他的倾听和他对陌生人的善良,让他们给他起了一个“阳光市长”的绰号)”可知,Nixon温暖了陌生人的心,所以才得到这个昵称。
根据最后一段中“They simply want to sit next to someone and share the silence.(他们只是想坐在某人旁边,分享沉默)”以及“She just wanted a moment of peace and to know she wasn’t alone.(她只是想要片刻安宁,知道她并不孤单)”可知,对一些人来说,安静的陪伴反而能给他们带来慰藉。故选D。
    C
Mindfulness practice has exploded in popularity recently. Experimenters of a series of trials revealed mindfulness-based interventions had some benefits for a number of health outcomes. They said, the effects were smaller and less consistent when compared with those of other therapies, and some effects faded soon. Taken together, mindfulness-based interventions are better than nothing but more research is needed to compare them with other therapies.
All mindfulness-based interventions attempt to focus on the present moment. Though “to be present” has psychological benefits, in some circumstances it’s important to be mindless. That is, as you develop skill in new tasks, you can perform them with increasing facility until attention seems to be unnecessary. Everyday examples range from riding a bike to brushing your teeth.
Underlying this state of “automaticity” are mental processes that can be accomplished without paying attention to them. Research revealed paying much attention to what you’re doing can have damaging effects, particularly when you perform tasks that are not intricate at all for you.
In a study, scientist Sian Beilock and her colleagues had skilled golfers play golf under different experimental conditions. In one case, the golfers were simply asked to follow the swing of their club and say “stop” as a sign when they finished their swing. In the second condition, they were instructed to listen for a specific sound while ignoring other noises and say the word “tone” when they heard the target sound. The result showed the skilled golfers performed substantially worse when they zeroed in on their swing than when they concentrated on irrelevant sounds and even when they warmed up.
The important message from this research is that focusing too carefully on well-practiced things can cause mistakes. Of course, you should not resign yourself to going through life on automatic pilot. But there are situations where you should let automaticity take over. The next time you ride a bike, don’t overthink it.
    8. What is the experimenters’ attitude to mindfulness?
    A. Enthusiastic. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Confused.
    9. What does the underlined word “intricate” mean in paragraph 3?
    A. Important. B. Familiar. C. Interesting. D. Complicated.
    10. In which aspect are the two conditions of Beilock’s study different?
    A. Words golfers should listen for.
    B. Interventions golfers faced when playing.
    C. Things golfers paid attention to.
    D. Signals golfers gave after finishing swings.
    11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Sometimes Mindlessness Is Better
    B. Mindfulness Is a Double-edged Weapon
    C. Automaticity Plays a Big Role Quietly
    D. Relaxation Matters More than Attention
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据首段末句“Taken together, mindfulness-based interventions are better than nothing but more research is needed to compare them with other therapies. (总的来说,基于正念的干预比什么都不做要好,但还需要更多的研究来将它们与其他疗法进行比较。)”可知,实验者们认为基于正念的干预措施对健康有一些积极影响,但还需要更多的研究来对比基于正念的干预和其他疗法的效果。由此可知,这些实验者们对正念的态度是客观的。故选B。
    【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“Underlying this state of “automaticity” are mental processes that can be accomplished without paying attention to them. Research revealed paying much attention to what you’re doing can have damaging effects, particularly when you perform tasks that are not intricate at all for you. (这种“自动性”状态的基础是不需要注意就能完成的心理过程。研究表明,过分关注你正在做的事情可能会产生破坏性的影响,尤其是当你在做一些对你来说一点都不 的任务时。)”可知,在自动化状态下,不需要注意力便可完成任务,即:执行一些简单熟练的任务,所以划线单词所在的定语从句含义为“对你来说简单的任务”,因此“intricate”的含义应与“简单的”相对。故选D。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第二三句“In one case, the golfers were simply asked to follow the swing of their club and say “stop” as a sign when they finished their swing. In the second condition, they were instructed to listen for a specific sound while ignoring other noises and say the word “tone” when they heard the target sound.(在一种情况下,高尔夫球手只是被要求跟随球杆的摆动,并在完成挥杆时说“停止”作为信号。在第二种情况下,他们被要求听一种特定的声音,同时忽略其他噪音,并在听到目标声音时说出“音调”这个词。)”可知,在第一种情况下,参与者要关注他们的挥杆过程;在第二种情况下,他们要留心听一个特定的声音。因此,他们的关注点不同。故选C。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据末段第一二三句“The important message from this research is that focusing too carefully on well-practiced things can cause mistakes. Of course, you should not resign yourself to going through life on automatic pilot. But there are situations where you should let automaticity take over. (这项研究的重要信息是,过于专注于已经练习得很好的事情会导致错误。当然,你不应该听任自己在自动驾驶模式下度过一生。但在有些情况下,你应该让自动性起作用。)”可知,专注未必是好事,在完成简单熟练的任务时,这种“自动性”状态就已足够。所以,有时心不在焉更好。故选A。
    D
Most brands’ marketing strategies target our vision-think about logos, ads and other symbols. Some try to stimulate us with upbeat music or relaxing sounds. But targeting our noses can be an even more powerful tool for brands, say marketing experts.
An industry, known as scent marketing, is dedicated to developing custom fragrances(香味). ScentAir, for example, is one of the largest sellers of fragrance diffusers(扩散器)to leading brands. The company designs 9 “fragrance experiences” ranging from “luxurious and sophisticated” to “passionate and sensual”. On the flip side, it also tries to mask and neutralize(中和)awful smells from bathrooms or kitchens.
According to Laurence Minsky, a professor from Columbia College Chicago who studies branding, our sense of smell runs straight to our limbic system, and thus deploying a pleasant fragrance in a store can influence customers’ feelings about it and help it stand out in a crowded market. It can also cue up past memories, Minsky said.
The presence of a pleasant scent in stores resulted in a 3% sales increase compared to stores without one, found a study published in The Journal of Marketing. And beyond just being pleasant, the specifics of scent matter. Another study published in The Journal. Of. Retailing found that consumers spent more and purchased more items in stores with a simple orange or lemon scent than in stores with complex scents.
The opportunity to create an ambiance(格调)while increasing sales has led retailers and other businesses to experiment with different scents and create their own fragrance experiences. Brands such as Play-Doh and Johnson & Johnson were some of the first to use scent as a marketing tool. Play-Doh even successfully trademarked its own fragrance in 2018.
Since the 1990s, Singapore Airlines has also been using its own fragrance. Flight attendants wear it as perfume; it is mixed into hot towels served before takeoff and wafts through the cabin during the flight. Hotels such as Hyatt and Westin pump smells into their lobbies, while many supermarkets move their bakeries from the back of the store to the front.
But stores should keep a delicate balance when they engineer their smells. The USA’s subway, for example, has been criticized by some customers for an unpleasant bread smell. When Starbucks introduced breakfast sandwiches in 2008, it found the smell of sandwiches cooking in the oven was overpowering its coffee fragrance.
    12. What may be the function of the limbic system?
    A. Improving our fashion sense.
    B. Getting rid of some bad memories.
    C. Changing our perspectives on things.
    D. Regulating our emotions and memories.
    13. What do paragraphs 5-6 mainly tell us?
    A. The history of scent marketing.
    B. The significance of scent marketing.
    C. The wide application of scent marketing.
    D. The influence of various scent experiments.
    14. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
    A. To try out an idea.
    B. To issue a warning.
    C. To draw a conclusion.
    D. To give a piece of advice.
    15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Pay attention to your brand image
    B. Use smell to get you to spend more
    C. Increase sales of fragrance diffusers
    D. Attract customers with excellent service
D 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据文章第三段“According to Laurence Minsky, a professor from Columbia College Chicago who studies branding, our sense of smell runs straight to our limbic system, and thus deploying a pleasant fragrance in a store can influence customers’ feelings about it and help it stand out in a crowded market. It can also cue up past memories, Minsky said.(芝加哥哥伦比亚大学研究品牌的教授劳伦斯·明斯基表示,我们的嗅觉直接进入大脑边缘系统,因此在商店里散发一种令人愉悦的香味可以影响顾客对它的感觉,帮助它在拥挤的市场中脱颖而出。明斯基说,它还能唤起过去的记忆)”可知,the limbic system应该是能控制我们的情绪和记忆。故选D项。

2.主旨大意题。根据第五段的“The opportunity to create an ambiance while increasing sales has led retailers and other businesses to experiment with different scents and create their own fragrance experiences. Brands such as Play-Doh and Johnson & Johnson were some of the first to use scent as a marketing tool. Play-Doh even successfully trademarked its own fragrance in 2018.(在增加销售额的同时营造一种氛围的机会,促使零售商和其他企业尝试不同的香味,创造自己的香水体验。培乐多和强生等品牌是最早将气味作为营销工具的品牌之一。培乐多甚至在2018年成功注册了自己的香水商标)”和第六段的“Since the 1990s, Singapore Airlines has also been using its own fragrance. Flight attendants wear it as perfume; it is mixed into hot towels served before takeoff and wafts through the cabin during the flight. Hotels such as Hyatt and Westin pump smells into their lobbies, while many supermarkets move their bakeries from the back of the store to the front.(自上世纪90年代以来,新航也一直在使用自己的香水。空乘人员把它当香水用;它被混合在起飞前提供的热毛巾中,并在飞行过程中飘过机舱。凯悦和威斯汀等酒店等将香味注入大堂,而许多超市则将面包店从商店的后面搬到前面)”可知,这两段主要讲述的是气味营销的广泛应用。故选C项。
3.推理判断题。根据最后一段的内容,特别是该段的第一句话“But stores should keep a delicate balance when they engineer their smells.(但商店在设计气味时应该保持微妙的平衡)”可知,在最后一段,作者是为了提出建议。故选D项。
所以用B项“Use smell to get you to spend more”作为本文的题目与文章主题相符。
Reading poetry can be challenging, but learning how to carefully move through a poem is also very rewarding,____16____ But, by following the tips below, anyone can have the deeply rewarding experience of connecting to a great poem.
Sound abounds (有许多). Poetry is made to be heard. You're probably familiar with rhyming poems:roses are red, violets are blue. . . but there are many sound elements that poets use not only to make the poem sound beautiful, but to enhance the meaning or intention of a poem. ____17____What do you notice about how it sounds? How does the sound enhance an overall theme, mood, or message?
____18____Many poems may use words or reference places or times in history that may be unfamiliar to you. Be curious enough to look up all the words and references that you're unfamiliar with. You should also gather information about the poet, what was happening in their lives, and what was going on in the world around them. All of these can offer essential context to bring the poem to life.
Analyze the figurative (比喻的) language in the poem. Figurative language could be words that are repeated often in the poem or words that rhyme in each stanza (节). To get more into the figurative meaning of the poem, you should look at how the poet use literary devices like metaphor, simile, and imagery. ____19____
Finally, you don't have to understand it to engage with it and enjoy it If you like the way a poem sounds when you read it aloud, but don't know what it “means," that's OK! ____20____The great thing about art is that it can have lots of different meanings or seemingly no meaning at all and can still be enjoyed. The same goes for poetry.
    A. Curiosity kills the confusion.
    B. Look up the words you do not understand.
    C. They are often used to add deeper meaning to the poem.
    D. Maybe it makes sense in a way that you can't necessarily express.
    E. Once you find a poem that interests you, read it out loud several times.
    F. You should also pay attention to how the poet opens and closes the poem.
    G. Unlike painting and music, poetry requires a little extra effort to harvest its full effects.
G 17. E 18. A 19. C 20. D

How does the sound enhance an overall theme, mood, or message?”(你注意到它听起来怎么样了吗? E.“Once you find a poem that interests you, read it out loud several times.”(一旦你发现一首你感兴趣的诗,大声读几遍。)
根据下文“Be curious enough to look up all the words and references that you're unfamiliar with.”(有足够的好奇心去查阅所有你不熟悉的单词和参考资料。) A.“Curiosity kills the confusion.”(好奇心消除困惑。)
根据前文“To get more into the figurative meaning of the poem, you should look at how the poet use literary devices like metaphor, simile, and imagery. ”(为了进一步了解这首诗的比喻意义,你应该看看诗人如何运用文学手法,比如隐喻,明喻和意象。)可知,接下来可以描述的为使用这些文学手法的意义。选项C.“They are often used to add deeper meaning to the poem.”(它们经常被用来为诗歌增添更深层的意义。)
根据前文“Finally, you don't have to understand it to engage with it and enjoy it If you like the way a poem sounds when you read it aloud, but don't know what it “means," that's OK!”(最后,如果你大声朗读一首诗时喜欢它的发音,但是不知道它的“意思”,没关系!)后文“The great thing about art is that it can have lots of different meanings or seemingly no meaning at all and can still be enjoyed. The same goes for poetry.”(艺术的伟大之处在于,它可以有很多不同的意义,或者看起来根本没有意义,而且仍然可以被欣赏。诗歌也是一样。)可知,你不理解诗歌,也可以享受它。诗歌的意义是欣赏,在于享受。因此空白处填的内容为诗歌的意义也许在某种程度上,你无法表达出来。选项D.“Maybe it makes sense in a way that you can't necessarily express.”(也许在某种程度上,你无法表达出来。)符合题意,故选D。

    第二节(满分25分)
    57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
    Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops (人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing flawlessly white socks and equally perfect black leather shoes, which were glittering in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He couldn’t treasure his possession too much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped a dust or two from his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and urging him, “Hurry up! The train is coming!”
Aamir’s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the leather shoes, as if enchanted Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment (车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing--with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.
Para 1: That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2: But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train. With his eyes fixed on the window, Aamir put all his strength in his right hand and made a powerful throw. However, he abruptly fell off because of the broken flip-flop. Without a second thought, he tried again, the shoe just flew past the window frame and fell on the platform like a dead leaf. Seeing this, Aamir stamped his feet, wearing a frustrated look. “Are shoes really made for walking?”, Aamir thought with depression. He drooped his head, not knowing what to do next.
But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window. Miraculously, it landed on the platform several steps away from him. Before he could look up again and seek out the fancy-shoe boy, the train sped on, vanishing in the distance. What remained in sight was the meandering rail track and the rolling mountains far away. Twenty years later, when he was launching his new footwear product at a press conference, wearing a pair of shining leather shoes, Aamir started his presentation with a simple sentence: “Shoes are made for walking.”
