Earlier this year,I visited Baluran National Park in eastern Java with my family. This park, named after a dead volcano,is the only place in Indonesia that looks like an African savanna (热带草原).Therefore,it is called Africa in Indonesia. You can see deer, large water buffalo, small mice, peacocks, eagles, monkeys and much more animals.
When walking in the park,we really had the feeling that we were in Africa. This was mainly due to its climate. The air was hot and dry rather than warm and wet.It was completely different from what I got used to in Indonesia and I was so surprised.
In the park, you will never get bored because the whole neighborhood is full of monkeys. But these monkeys are rude and aggressive (好斗的).Monkeys guarded our house and wanted food. When we didn't give them food, they would rob us of food.So each of us was offered a stick by the rangers (护林员).They taught us that when the monkeys were too aggressive we must lift the stick. And it worked perfectly.
In the late afternoon,we went for a walk to explore the area.On the way,we saw many species of trees that couldn't be found anywhere else in Indonesia.Soon the sunset approached so we decided to go back. But darkness fell about halfway through the journey. We only had poor light from our phones. And we heard only the sounds of animals around us.It was possible that hungry animals might come close to us and take us as their dinner. We started to feel scared and quickened our steps.Just when we were about to reach our breaking point,we saw a ranger, who comforted us and led us to safety.
In the evening,we talked with the ranger about his life in Baluran. And after dinner,he invited us to fish with him at sunrise. We really had a great time in the park, and I always look forward to coming back and experiencing all the excitements again.
    6. What do we learn about Baluran National Park? ______

Halfway through the women's slalom (障碍滑雪赛) event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi,Russia,18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin held a commanding lead over the greatest women's slalom skiers in the world. On her final run,she burst from the start house at breakneck speed, zigzagging(曲折前进) around the poles in crazy rhythm.
Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela's life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother,Taylor,to ski at a very young age.At two and a half years old,Mikaela made her first ski run on plastic skis. From ages 8 to 11,she worked hard, repeating hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the correct techniques of slalom skiing.
When Mikaela was 11,she attended the Burke Mountain Academy,a Vermont boarding school for skiers. She took classes, studied, and practiced her skiing crazily.According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, "What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her effort to be the best. Her commitment to conditioning, getting proper sleep, eating correctly, doing the drills, and watching video was unusual for an 11-to 13-year-old.Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now."
By the time she was 17,she had already won her first World Cup race.
For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job.Even her off-season is work time.In the summer, when Mikaela is off the ski slopes and in the gym,her daily training consists of six to seven hours of weight lifting core body work, and biking to improve her strength and flexibility. She does all of this so that she can dash down a mountain at speeds topping 50 miles per hour while cutting back and forth around gates with astonishing precision.

The mom had died when the rescuers found her after the terrible earthquake. She was covered by a destroyed house.Through gaps (缝隙) of those ruins, the rescuers could see her last posture (姿势).It was something like an ancient person who was kowtowing (叩头),but it just looked strange because she was out of shape by pressure.

Pasta and pizza were on everyone's lunch menu in my native land of Italy.Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian.A few years later,as I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn,I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse as the students. In front of me was an array of foods I couldn't even name in my native language.Fearing that I would pick out something awful,I desperately tried to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation.Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago,the lessons I learned will stick in my mind forever. For the past three summers,I have worked in a government agency in New York.New immigrants much like in the lunch line flooded our office seeking help.I often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones.As I served the role of vital communication link,I was reminded of my desperate struggle to converse before I learned English.I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people who did not speak the language. It suddenly became very clear to me how lucky I was to be fluent in two languages.
In New York,a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a diverse population. In my English to Italian translations,I've learned about social programs that I didn't know existed. This work expanded my mind in ways that are impossible inside the four walls of a classroom.Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today,I am no longer confused by this city's sounds and smells.Instead, enjoy its diversity.
    18. What did the author realize after entering school in Brooklyn? ______
    A. Time passed quickly. B. English was hard to learn.

Half decade ago,at the end of my first semester teaching at Wharton,my student Kevin stopped by for office hours. He sat down and burst into tears. My mind started cycling through a list of events that could make a college junior cry:His girlfriend had broken up with him;he had been accused of cheating in exams;he forgot to turn in papers before the deadline."I just got my first A-minus(减)," he said with his voice shaking.
Year after year,I watch in depression as students are crazy about getting straight A's.Some sacrifice their health;a few have even tried to charge their school after falling short(倒挂).All hold the belief that top marks are a ticket to best graduate schools and rewarding job offers.I was one of them.I started college with the goal of graduating with a 4.0.It would be a reflection of my brainpower and willpower, showing that I had the right stuff to succeed .But I was wrong.
The evidence is clear:Academic excellence is not a strong predictor of career excellence.Across industries, research shows that the connection between grades and job performance is modest in the first year after college and unimportant within a handful of years.Take Microsoft for example, once employees are two or three years out of college, their grades have no bearing on their performance. (Of course,it must be said that if you got D's,you probably didn't end up at Microsoft.)
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwork skills,or social, emotional and political intelligence.Yes,straight A students master large amounts of information and reproduce it in exams, but career success is rarely about finding the right solution to a problem- it's more about finding the right problem to solve. This might explain why Steve Jobs finished high school with a 2.65 GPA,and Martin Luther King Jr.got only one A in his four years at Morehouse.
    21. Why did the student Kevin feel sad? ______
    A. He was caught cheating in exams.
    B. His girlfriend abandoned him.
    C. He didn't hand in his papers before headline.
    D. He failed to get straight A's.
    22. What did the author once believe? ______
    A. Marks didn't reflect willpower and brainpower.
    B. Top marks meant well-paid job offers.
    C. It was wrong to care too much about marks.
    D. Straight A's don't bring creative performances.
    23. Why are the employees at Microsoft mentioned? ______
    A. To stress the company values employees with top marks.
    B. To indicate academic performance is important.
    C. To show academic excellence isn't a strong predictor of career performance.
    D. To introduce successful example in the technology industry.
    24. What should people focus more on to succeed according to the passage? ______
    A. How to be a creative leader.
    B. What to do with detailed information.
    C. How to solve a problem.
    D. What problems to be solved.

There's nothing particularly difference about the way Canadians celebrate Halloween, yet perhaps at least in my neighborhood,it seems to be more about togetherness than any great passion to wear a witch's hat or string some nets around the bush.Folklorists trace Halloween back to the Celtic festival of Samhain.Nicholas Rogers,in his book Halloween:From Pagan Ritual to Party Night, says the feast marked the midpoint between the autumn equinox(秋分)and the fall of winter,a time of stock-taking and preparations.
Halloween came to North America with Irish and Scottish migration in the 19th century and underwent many repeats. " Halloween's ability to provide a public space for social development held it in good position at a time when other potentially wild holidays were becoming more institutionalized and domesticated (驯服的)," argues Mr.Rogers.It changed from a family affair to a party united by adults.
In popular culture,Halloween is viewed as an American secular holiday.According to digital coupon company RetailMeNot,73% of Americans plan to celebrate it this year, and it's a phenomenon in Canada too. "It's become bigger and more celebrated than it ever has," says Chris Ainsworth, who founded the Canadian Haunters Association,a group of hardcore Halloween enthusiasts who turn their homes into detailed haunted houses each year.In 2018,the Retail Council of Canada made news saying Canadians were now outspending Americans on Halloween,to the total of ¥ 1 billion annually. The estimate has remained stable, says Diane Brisebois, the council president. That's not because enthusiasm has declined but because prices have been driven down.
Some here are unsatisfied with the commercial in the festivities. But in some ways the holiday has also returned to its roots as a community-centered activity. And perhaps that's why everyone gets so excited about Halloween in Toronto,a metropolis that is known as a "city of villages.
    25. What do the Canadians seem to like about Halloween? ______
    A. It enriches people's life. B. It makes people excited.
    C. It provides people get-together. D. It marks the fall of the Autumn.
    26. Why does the Halloween keep a steady position according to Paragraph 2? ______
    A. It goes through reformation.
    B. It can give a space for social development.
    C. It provides people with different ideas about holidays.
    D. It can change other holidays into more reasonable ones.
    27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______ .
    A. the Halloween always make people excited
    B. people in Toronto like to celebrate Halloween
    C. the Halloween is gradually returning its tradition
    D. people aren't content with commercial activities in Halloween
    28. From which is the text probably taken? ______
    A. A biology textbook. B. A health report.
    C. A research paper. D. A culture magazine.

Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from?Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food?Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or culinary(烹饪的)traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.
On an individual level,we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is.Many of us associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us.
On a larger scale, food is an important part of culture.Traditional cuisine is passed down from one generation to the next. also operates as an expression of cultural identity.Immigrants bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of preserving their culture when they move to new places.
In China, harmony is a vital quality in almost every aspect of life. This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almost every flavor is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavors that go well together. The cuisine of the United States also reflects its history. The European colonization of the Americas brought European ingredients and cooking styles to the U.S.
As the world becomes more globalized,it is easier to access cuisines from different cultures. We should embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture's food but we should also become more informed about other cultures by trying their foods. It's important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.
    29. What does the author want to express in Paragraph 1? ______
    A. Traditions on culture.
    B. Difficulties in cooking food.
    C. Concerns about food and culture.
    D. Connections between food and culture.

    C. It contains abundant dishes with various flavors.

It was somewhere between spring and summer. My mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. "What are you doing?" I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn't the case. My mom jumped out of the car, seizing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know someone there?" She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员)." "What?" She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while."
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving. I spoke again,"Did you leave your name?" To this she answered, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me."
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
