I was born without hands and feet. It’s a rare condition. Living with that adversity has made me who I am today.
My parents helped me develop tools to overcome my challenges. When I was two, my dad decided that my family would stop helping me eat. He knew that one day I’d live on my own, so I’d have to look after myself. I learned to eat with a spoon, and then with a knife and fork. It gave me a huge sense of accomplishment.
My darkest moment came when I was 10. My family had moved from Indiana to Georgia. In Indiana, friends treated me as normal. But in Georgia, it was different. I felt very aware of my disability. I worried I’d have to live at home forever. I felt hopeless about the future.
My world changed when I got into sports. I started playing football. Everything came together when I made my first tackle at age 11. It was my first real achievement.
Everyone I played against was able-bodied. At first, I struggled. But I threw everything I had into learning to be the best player. I turned my lack of height into a weapon.
Then I decided to start wrestling(摔跤). I lost 35 games, but then I had a breakthrough. I had an amazing coach who helped me invent moves that took advantage of my strength. My different body type was a psychological advantage — opponents(对手)didn’t know how to handle it. I eventually finished 12th in the 103-pound weight class in the championships.
I keep going in the face of obstacles(障碍). Instead of thinking about the ultimate(最终的) goal, I focus on the immediate future. When I’m climbing a mountain, I’m down on all fours looking at the ground. It’s not going to do me any good to look up at the summit(山顶).
I just figure out how to do the best I can with the next few feet in front of me.

The time to form a new habit depends on the person, the habit itself, the environment, and the motivation. Generally speaking, 60 days is good enough for getting a new habit formed, but some habits could take twice as long. Some habits will never be formed no matter how much time passes. Even a habit that takes months or years to form can still be broken eventually.
Becoming an early riser was really challenging. I struggled with this habit for years to manage to form it. I do break this habit now and then, usually by choice to experience something different for a while. In the past 90 days, I have stayed in bed past 5 am perhaps only two or three times. It takes me less than a week to be back with it. Remembering the benefits surely helps.
In my 20s I was too impatient with many habits. If I couldn’t get something working in a few weeks, I’d often drop it and try something else. Now that I’m in my late 40s, I have learned to think in a more practical way. I know that even if it takes many months or years to form a new habit, I am sure the habit could bring advantages for many years. It doesn’t take me too long to think of carrying out the new habit, I just get it started. When you think about a habit that you have stuck to for many years, who cares if it took a few weeks or six months to form it?
Don’t worry so much about how long it takes to form a habit. Instead, consider which habits could improve the quality of your life so that they are worthy of six months to get them formed. When a habit forms at last, it feels uncomfortable not to do it, and your day doesn’t feel complete without it.
8. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. We have to keep the habits once formed. B. Most habits can be formed quickly.
C. We need sixty days to form a new habit. D. The time to form habits varies greatly.
9. Why does the writer break the habit of getting up early sometimes?
A. He likes sleeping in bed for a while. B. He wants to try something different.
C. He prepares breakfast for the family. D. He is afraid to wake up his family.
10. What does the writer think more about the habit when he is in his forties?
A. The development of the habit. B. The expense of the habit.
C. The benefits of the habit. D. The limitation of the habit.
11. In which part of a magazine is this text most probably taken from?
A. Education. B. Technology. C. Tourism. D. Literature.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. A

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm(早产) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological(神经系统的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular(心血管的) system.
12. How does music affect preterm babies?
A. It helps reduce their pain.
B. It helps develop their potential in music.
C. It helps improve their hearing systems.
D. It helps repair their neurological systems.
13. What does the underlined phrase “stave off ” in paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?
A. lead to B. build up C. put off D. push ahead
14. Why can music mend a broken heart?
A. It has a positive effect on human body systems’ work.
B. It can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
C. It helps make a person feel optimistic about life.
D. It can help patients recover in a slow way.
15. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Who can benefit from music
B. The best time to listen to music
C. The way to choose quality music
D. How music affects our mind and body
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D

【13题详解】
短语猜测题。根据画线部分所在句中Though表达的转折关系,以及画线短语下文“There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.(有一个163人参与的实验,其中74人是音乐家。参与者被要求通过一些听力测试。音乐家比非音乐家更能听到声音,而且这种差异随着年龄的增长而越来越明显。这意味着一个70岁的音乐家比一个50岁的非音乐家的听力更好,即使在嘈杂的环境中)”可知,音乐家的听力更好,因此画线词所在句意为“虽然音乐不能使耳聋消失,但它确实可以延缓听力的丧失”,stave off意为“延缓”。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文内容,结合第一段中“Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.(它对大脑的影响比任何其他人类经验都要深刻得多。继续往下读,你就会知道音乐的神奇力量)”可知,本文主要说明音乐对人身体和心理的积极影响。故选D。

第二节 短文续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against my own body and mind.
The night before my marathon, I had a nightmare that I couldn’t even cross the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous. My wife still encouraged me to prove something to myself. She is my biggest fan, who never minded the alarm clock at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
It was winter but people from all walks of life crowed along the course, enjoying the marathon in their own ways. Without a cloud in the sky, the light took on a magical color. Shortly after embarking on the journey, my shoelaces became untied, so I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By Mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly, for which I had prepared myself well in advance. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving! The only thing I could do to strengthen my body was to take a few sips of water. I realized that I was left behind, but it didn’t matter a bit to me, because I kept telling myself that it was not a competition with other participants, but a test of will.
As I approached mile23, I couldn’t feel my feet anymore, feeling like floating in the air. However, what happened next second changed this ordinary day—immediately a vehicle lost its control and dived into the canal beside the course! The crowds just rushed to the bank and saw a woman behind the wheel in the sinking car.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I knew that there was no time to waste.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was one of the final runners to finish, only with my wife waiting behind the line.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I knew that there was no time to waste. But I should go to save the woman first. I jumped into the canal, enduring a sharp pain in my ankle. I swam up to the window and confirmed that the woman was unconscious. By then, the car was close to being fully submerged. I climbed inside to free her. I lifted her out of her seat and pulled her through the driver’s side window. Just as the car’s entire front was underwater, I saved the woman to the shore. Fortunately, she was still alive.
I was one of the final runners to finish, only with my wife waiting behind the line. But I finished! And I got a medal. I felt tired but happy. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. More importantly, I am the winner in my life, because my kindness saved a person’s life. Making a firm decision, moving forward, free of shame and worldly labels, I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
