Young students can, and do, make a big difference. As an educator, you have the opportunity to spark (触发) a passion in students that will drive them to do their part to take care of the Earth. Here are activities you could add to your lesson plans to inspire your students on Earth Day:
Make signs for school and at home
Sometimes we just need a little reminder to help us change our habits. Have students think about what they can do at school and at home to help the environment and how they can encourage others to change their habits.
Make a video or presentation urging others to take action
Students can make a bigger impact if they influence others to do their part to protect the environment. Putting together a video or presentation also helps them internalize the material itself — they need to understand it before they can explain it to others. Presentations can be given in the classroom or even to the whole school. Eventually, they may be able to present their lessons and research at a local conference.
Show them examples of other students making a real difference
It's important for students to see examples of young environmentalists so they know they don't need to wait until they're older to make a difference. Learning about the work these young people are doing can give your students new ideas for how to protect the environment. It can open the door of possibilities for how to think about finding solutions to problems they can help solve.
Earth Day isn't just on April 22. It's every day. How will you celebrate Earth Day and help students make a difference year-round?
1. Who is the text written for?
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Environmentalists. D. Parents.
2. What can we do to remind people to change their habits?
A. Make signs. B. Make a video or presentation.
C. Make lesson plans. D. Show other students' examples.
3. Why is it important for students to learn about young environmentalists?
A. It helps make friends. B. It improves learning results.
C. It guarantees success. D. It inspires immediate action.

The Amazing Penguin Rescue
In the summer of 2016, the ship MV Treasure sunk, creating an oil spill. Thirteen hundred tons of fuel oil were flowing right in the middle of the African Penguins’ habitat. Soon the oil covered about 20,000 penguins. Without swift help, the seabirds would have no chance of survival. Volunteers were showing up by the thousands and I also took part in what was the largest animal rescue operation ever.
A warehouse was turned into a rescue center near the habitat and hundreds of pools were built to hold about 100 oiled birds each. When walking into the center, I couldn’t believe my ears. I had expected to walk into a chorus of honking and squawking(尖声叫). Instead, the center sounded like a library. The penguins were dead silent. My heart ached for the painful birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt. Cleaning oil off a penguin wasn’t easy. Even with more than 12,500 volunteers, it took a month to bathe all 20,000 birds at the center.
While volunteers were busy bathing the oiled penguins, another crisis(危机) was developing. Oil from the spill had started moving north. Tens of thousands of penguins were in the oil’s path. But we already had our hands full with 20,000 recovering birds. If any more birds were oiled, we wouldn’t have enough resources to save them.
One researcher came up with an idea: What if the penguins were temporarily moved out of harm’s way? Experts decided to have a try. Volunteers rounded up the penguins and released them 500 miles away. The hope was that by the time the seabirds swam home, the oil would be gone. The plan worked! Another 20,000 penguins were saved.
The entire penguin rescue took about three months. More than 90% of the oiled penguins were successfully returned to the wild. Looking back on the rescue, I am still amazed by the work of the volunteers. What I could hardly believe was that we accomplished an impossible task.
4. The African penguins were in danger because of ________.
A. a knock by a ship B. a change of habitats
C. a spill of oil D. a lack of help
5. When walking into the rescue center, the author felt ________.
A. ambitious B. shocked C. hopeless D. inspired

The way we cook is important. In many countries, the two sources of heat used for cooking are natural gas or electric stoves. The World Health Organization(WHO) warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year.
Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook stoves in the home. WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. And they say more than seven million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, the WHO says about 4.3 million people die from household air pollution given off by simple biomass(生物燃料)and coal stoves.
These findings show that the home use of poisonous fuels is to blame for many of these deaths. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste and so on. Carlos Dora is Coordinator in the WHO’ s Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. He says people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosene(煤油)fuel indoors. He says opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not correct the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. “New technologies and clean fuels can rid people of this problem.”
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of families in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Bruce is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way.“There are already many technologies for clean fuels available now. An effective and reasonably low-cost ethanol(酒精)stove that is made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company)is now being tested out. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves.” In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.
8. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By making classifications. B. By listing numbers.
C. By following time order. D. By describing a process.
9. According to Carlos Dora, what is the best solution to indoor air pollution?
A. People should use an effective air cleaner.
B. People should use new technologies and clean fuels.
C. People should open a window or door to let out the harmful air.
D. People should prevent themselves from being exposed to harmful air..
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Most of the deaths from indoor pollution are in developing countries.
B. Burning solid fuels can help limit indoor air pollution .
C. People can buy ethanol stoves made by Dometic in India.
D. There are already two technologies for clean fuels available for use.
11. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. The way we cook is changing.
B. Cause of indoor air pollution.
C. The development of electric stoves.
D. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year.
B 9. B 10. A 11. D

D
Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked around that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him than at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.
12. Why did the author feel bitter about her father when she was a young adult?
A. He was silent most of the time. B. He was too proud of himself.
C. He did not love his children. D. He expected too much of her.
13. When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel _____.
A. nervous B. sorry
C. tired D. safe
14. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson?
A. More critical. B. More talkative
C. Gentle and friendly. D. Strict and hard-working.
15. When the author says“I’m delighted with my new friend”in the last paragraph ,he refers to ________as his new friend.
A. the author’s son B. the author’s father
C. the friend of the author’s father D. the café owner
D 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中“As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boy friends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. ”(作为一个女生和年轻人,我害怕他,他让我痛苦万分。除非我得A,否则他似乎对我不满意;如果我的男朋友的父亲不如他成功,他似乎也对我不满意)可知,父亲让作者感到痛苦是因为父亲对她的期待很高,故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段最后一句“Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard”(每当我周末和他出去,我总是很难想出要说的话,生怕说错话惹他生气)可知,周末和父亲在一起的时候,作者感到很紧张,故选A。
根据第三段中“Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before”可知,以前那个刻板和严厉的父亲已经没有了,代替的是一个很友好慈爱的父亲(作者认为父亲变得温和又友好),故选C。
根据最后一段最后一句“I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.”

根据后文“Children like to guess what they are going to have and parents get the chance to introduce new foods to children. Parents can also use the mealtime as a chance to talk with their kids about their life.”(孩子们喜欢猜测他们将要吃什么,父母有机会向孩子们介绍新的食物。
根据后文“That’s why it’s important to have enough healthy snacks, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt and whole-grain biscuits.”(这就是为什么有足够的健康零食很重要,比如水果、蔬菜、坚果、酸奶和全麦饼干)可知,因为孩子们喜欢吃零食,而一般的零食对孩子身体益处甚少,因此吃健康零食很重要。
根据此段“The best way for you to encourage healthy eating is to eat well yourself. Kids will follow the lead of the adults they see every day.”(鼓励健康饮食的最好方法是自己吃得好。 故选A。
根据设空前一句“Parents might find themselves shouting at children to get them to have healthy foods in front of them.
根据后文“Talk to them about making choices and planning a healthy meal. It can help them to make good decisions on their own about the foods they want to eat.”(和他们谈谈如何选择和计划一顿健康的饮食。
