People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took an English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say it in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I'm in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
( )38. According to the writer, ______is a good way to improve your English.
A. thinking in English
B. learning English grammar
C. watching English films
D. reading English books
( )39. The underlined phrase “got it over” in Paragraph 3 means “______” in English.
A. stick to it B. depend on it
C. overcome it D. understand it
( )40. To the writer's surprise, his English improved quickly ______.
A. in the university B. in the middle school
C. in China D. in America
( )41. The best title for this passage should be______.
A. My University Life
B. My American Friends
C. The Importance of English
D. My English Learning Experience

①Today, we'll visit a place of strange and silent beauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence of very real danger. We are exploring Death Valley National Park.
②Death Valley is a huge place. It extends more than 225 kilometers across the southern part of California into the neighboring state of Nevada. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous desert and mountains. There are mountains that reach more than 3, 000 meters into the sky.
③Much of Death Valley is flat and dry. In some areas the ground is nothing but salt. Nothing is able to grow in this salty ground. However, it would be wrong to think that nothing lives in Death Valley. The valley is full of life. Wildflowers grow very quickly after even a small amount of rain. Several kinds of birds live in Death Valley, as do mammals and reptiles. Many different snakes live there too.
④The area got its name in 1849. That was the year after gold was discovered in California. Thousands of people from around the country traveled to the gold mining areas of the state. They were in a hurry to get there before other people did. One group trying to reach California decided to take a path called the Old Spanish Trail. By December they had reached Death Valley. But there was a lack of water and there were too few plants for their work animals to eat. The people could not find a pass through the tall mountains to the west of the valley. Slowly, they began to suffer from a lack of food. To survive, they killed their work animals for food and began to walk out of the valley. As they left, a woman in the group looked back and said, “Goodbye, Death Valley. ” The name has never been changed.
⑤Death Valley became a national park in 1994. More than one million people visit the park each year.
( )42. What does Paragraph 3 want to tell us?
A. Death Valley is full of life.
B. Much of Death Valley is flat and dry.
C. Nothing can grow in this salty ground.
D. Different animals live in Death Valley.
( )43. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
( )44. Why did the woman call the area Death Valley?
A. Because people didn't know how to walk out of the valley.
B. Because a group of people lost their lives there.
C. Because the woman was left behind and died there.
D. Because the group of people had a hard time there.
( )45. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Death Valley extends from California to Nevada.
B. Wildlife is not able to live in Death Valley.

I spent 45 minutes taking the bus to the City of Sandy and then took a train to Salt Lake City. I visited Temple Square first. There were many tour guides speaking different languages. I joined the English group so that I could practise my English by listening to the guide explain the history. After visiting the square, I got a free ticket to see a film. Then I went to a big mall to eat some food for lunch. You know that ordering the food was a little difficult for me, but at last I ordered my food by the menu.
