China is one of the largest producers and consumers of watermelon in the world. And Wu Mingzhu, a schoolmate of Yuan Longping at Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing in the late 1940s, is the unsung hero who has helped make this possible.
“It’s no exaggeration(夸张)to say that about 80 percent of more than 20,000 of China’s new seed types of watermelons and sweet melons at people’s dining tables everyday are the result of great efforts made by Wu and her team over more than 60 years,” said a colleague of Wu’s.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where working conditions were hard. In 1958, Wu began to promote the modern technology of cultivating(种植)melons among farmers. However, the local farmers who were used to folk cultivation methods, didn’t seem to take kindly to that. With the help of a famous local melon expert, Wu opened up three acres of wasteland to plant melons according to scientific knowledge. When autumn arrived, local farmers found the melons Wu planted in a scientific way were particularly delicious. From then on, the farmers began to adopt Wu’s scientific growing methods.
Wu’s efforts to grow quality melons began paying off in 1973 when she went to the off-season breeding(培育)base in Hainan. She wanted to develop Hainan as a pilot area so that the south area of China could also grow melons, and realize the dream of three-matured or even four-matured melons. After numerous difficulties, finally in the 80s, the melon variety selected by Wu succeeded. Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”
Now dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, Wu is often unable to recognize her former colleagues or even her family members who live by her side. But having worked day and night to breed new seed types since the 1950s, she can still remember her melon work.
    24. What does Wu’s colleague think of her?
    A. Hardworking. B. Brave. C. Kindhearted. D. Considerate.
    25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
    A. Local farmers trusted Wu at first. B. Wu failed to spread her technology.
    C. Wu’s technology worked in Turpan Basin. D. A local expert improved Wu’s methods.
    26. Why did Wu choose Hainan as a breeding base?
    A. To attract more watermelon consumers.
    B. To earn more money by selling more melons.
    C. To guide the local farmers to grow watermelons.
    D. To improve the speed and efficiency of breeding.
    27. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. Wu Mingzhu’s lifestyle. B. A devoted watermelon scientist.
    C. Wu Mingzhu’s new discovery. D. The modern technology of melon growing.
    C
La Casa en el Aire (literally “The House in the Air” in Spanish) is a unique hostel located on a cliff face, about 30 meters above the ground, in the Colombian mountains.
Built primarily out of wood and featuring a tin roof, the cheap hotel is attached to a bridge that rises up among the area. It is held in place by several steel wires connected to the cliff and supported by a long wooden pole also placed against the cliff. It stands about 20 meters above the ground, at an altitude of about 2,500 meters above sea level.
La Casa en el Aire is the brainchild of Colombian mountain climber Nilton Lopez, who recently said that building this unusual hostel meant realizing an old dream of his. He is most proud of the fact that his creation is practical, with electricity being produced by solar panels, and all rubbish being collected and transported to Medellin.
Apart from staying and sleeping in a cabin hung on the side of a huge rock, visitors of La Casa en el Aire can also involve in a variety of exciting activities, such as bungee jumping out of the house or spending the night in hammocks(吊床)hung on steel wires above the house.
Because the hostel is located in a faraway area of Abejorral, with no easy access to food and water, visitors are encouraged to bring long-lasting foods (dry bread, cookies, etc.), as well as five-liter bottle of water with them.
    28. Which of the following can best describe La Casa en el Aire?
    A. Safe. B. Unique. C. Comfortable. D. Ordinary.
    29. What does the underlined word “brainchild” probably mean in paragraph 3?
    A. Idea. B. Advice. C. Project. D. Fact.
    30. What can be inferred about La Casa en el Aire?
    A. It is made out of steel wires. B. It is located in the mountains.
    C. It is environmentally friendly. D. It is supported by wooden poles.
    31. Why do visitors have to bring food and water?
    A. They are easy to go bad in the hostel. B. They are very expensive in the hostel.
    C. They are of poor quality in the hostel. D. They are not available easily in the hostel.
    D
An intelligent monitoring system is helping bird protectors in Chenhu Lake Wetland of Wuhan, Hubei province, by collecting data and learning more about the birds’ habits.
The wetland covers about 11,600 hectares and is located in the area where the Yangtze River and Han River meet. Up to 86,000 birds of 227 species inhabited the wetland last year, its figures showed.
A limited number of bird-watchers and patrol guards may miss out counting some of the birds but the system can do it more accurately, according to the reserve. In July last year, the monitoring system, the first of its kind in Hubei, was put into trial(试验)operation in the wetland. It has since recorded real-time monitoring data and assisted with patrolling. The system can detect the type of birds arriving or leaving and which areas they prefer to move around, by identifying species through the sounds they make. It also monitors sounds in the wild and compares them with those in the database.
A video system tracks key protection areas all day. Photos of birds taken will be automatically compared with those in the database, with a combination of audio and video information increasing the recognition accuracy. The reserve’s employees have also added tracking functions in the monitoring system by placing satellite trackers on bean geese migrating bean geese have been found to fly from Russian areas.
Feng Jiang, an engineer of the Chenhu wetland nature reserve management bureau, said, “The tracking data has a positive effect on the protection of species globally. Since November last year, we have tried to clarify the migration routes of birds. We monitor where they stay and when they return to the reserve. The data tells us where birds come from and pass by, so we can cooperate with international organizations or countries to better protect them.”
The monitoring system also uses digital technology to build a simulation(模拟)model. By simulating the flow of tourists, researchers can decide the maximum number of visitors in Chenhu Lake and prevent people from disturbing the birds. This can help researchers predict as well the possibility and scope(范围)of the environmental impact on the wetland through the growth of plants there and roll out targeted measures.
    32. What is a problem with bird-monitoring in the reserve?
    A. Vast area. B. Lack of experts. C. Lack of accuracy. D. Various species.
    33. What is the intelligent monitoring system able to do?
    A. Monitor the watchers and guards. B. Recognize the species of birds.
    C. Place satellite trackers on birds. D. Count all the birds correctly.
    34. How does the system work?
    A. By comforting the birds. B. By making birds’ sounds.
    C. By taking photos of birds. D. By comparing the collected data.
    35. What does the system do to help researchers?
    A. Provide birds’ food chains. B. Prevent the disturbance of birds.
    C. Predict the habits of the visitors. D. Protect the ecosystems in a better way.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Oceans are an appealing target for renewable energy production. Waves produce 32,000 terawatt-hours of natural energy per year—for reference, the entire world uses around 23,000 terawatt-hours every year.
The advantages of wave power are clear. 36 Turbines(涡轮机)produce electricity through the power of waves, making them a completely pollution-free, renewable energy source. And the amount of kinetic energy(动能)in a wave is huge that energy is used to produce electricity. There is also a lot of potential because many countries have access to an ocean that can help power their electric systems. Also, waves are hardly interrupted and almost always in movement. 37
But the disadvantages of wave energy are serious too. Building factories or electrical wires directly on the beach might prove challenging. 38 Local fishing zones could be affected or the factories could lead to more coastal erosion(腐蚀). High costs is a problem too. Wave power is a rising energy technology in the early stages of development, so calculating the costs is difficult. 39 Because constant movement can lead to more breaking, wave energy factories will most likely need regular and costly maintenance.
40 For many ocean-bordering countries, wave energy will be a great addition to the newable energy mix. The bottom line is that wave power has enormous global potential. However, the industry needs more funding and research to finalize the technology involved so that countries can begin adding wave energy to their renewable energy source.
    A. Wave energy still need to be explored.
    B. They are not affordable to many countries.
    C. Despite the challenges, there is a future of wave energy.
    D. Wave energy does not give off greenhouse gasses when produced.
    E. They can cause damage to sea life and the surrounding ecosystems.
    F. Maintenance for the factories in moving saltwater is very expensive.
    G. This makes electricity from wave energy a more reliable energy source.

I’m so excited because today I’m graduating from high school, finally! I have many mixed feelings. I’m nervous, happy, but most importantly scared for the future. I still haven’t gotten my college letters to see if I got in or not.
Several days passed and slowly my letters started to arrive, sadly refused. All of my options close to home turned me down, which made me scared because I get very homesick. Then I remembered that a month before in the college adviser’s office I applied to a study abroad program in China. I looked at it as a very last choice but now it was my only hope for going to college next year.
The letter arrived and I was accepted! I was happy to go to college but I couldn’t believe it was in China. We all started crying. My parents are very overprotective, they never let me do anything and always make my decisions for me. I was still unsure whether to go or not.
My parents claimed that I wasn’t ready. I didn’t give in. For the first time I made my own decision. They tried to stop me but my mind was determined. All of my life I never tried anything new and now was the perfect time to be outgoing. I would start fresh, meet new people, and learn about a new place and culture. I packed and my parents drove me to the airport, crying all the way. Finally, I said goodbye and left. Time passed so fast and once I opened my eyes I was in China.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为100左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Caring for animals
In my mind, nothing can delight me so much as caring for animals. Animals are our friends. They play an important role in keeping ecological balance and maintaining biodiversity, so we should live in harmony with them.
What can we do for them? First, we should protect the environment to give the animals a comfortable space to live in. Secondly, we should protect wild animals and refuse to eat them. Finally and most importantly, we should tell more and more people why and how to protect the animals.
Only by respecting the rules of nature, can we make our world better and enjoy a happy life. Remember — your contribution counts!

M:Oh, it’s you, dear. Sorry I had to rush off this morning. How are the boys? (6)
W:I’m taking them to the doctor at 10:00, (6) but I’m sure they’re going to be all right.
M:That’s good. I’ll get the cake for tomorrow’s birthday party on my way home. (7)
W:Great. Oh, gifts! I’m thinking of buying a camera or phones.
M:Well, dear, how about we put away some money in the bank for them, and teach them how to spend money wisely instead?
W:That’s a good idea. Let’s do it later today!
    Text 7
    W:Well, Mr. Barclay, (8) (9) I’m very impressed with your novel. (8)
M:I’m so glad you like it. I wasn’t sure if the subject would be popular.
W:Your style of writing will make it popular. It’s simple and clear, yet very intelligent. (8)
    M:Thank you.
W:As an editor, I find it hard to believe it’s your first novel. It’s so well-written.
M:I nearly didn’t write it. I’m usually too busy with work, but I was ill for a long period, so I started it to free myself of boredom. (9)
    W:Are you better now?
    M:Oh yes.
W:There’s just one small thing I’d like you to change. (10)
    M:Not the ending, I hope.
W:No, it’s the names of some characters, (10) because there are real persons of that name and they may feel uncomfortable.
    Text 8
M:Hello, Bright Futures. How can I help you?
W:Hello. I saw your advertisement for solar power. Can you tell me more about it? (11)
M:Do you mean solar power for your home?
W:Yes. I’ve heard it’s good for the environment.
M:It definitely is. Also, it is free power, so it can save your money.
    W:How does it work?
M:The panels on your house collect energy from the sun and turn it into electricity.
W:Does it cost a lot to set up? The cost is my top concern now. (12)
M:It isn’t cheap, but the government has just announced that it will give money to people who fit solar panels. And you can even sell back your electricity to the government.
W:Wow, that sounds really interesting now.
M:Then, why don’t I come to your house and work out the best plan with best price and most suitable products for your family? (13)
    Text 9
W:That’s all for the stories about the city’s high school sports teams. Next, we’re looking at local weather, and we’ve got some surprising news for everyone.
M:After a month of snowy and windy days around Toronto, we’re expecting a significant change. This map shows that a warm air has been pushed from Mexico through northern USA, finding its way here to Southern Canada. (14)
W:Great news, I’d say! We finally have some warm sunny days ahead. (15) Can’t wait to get my swimsuits and my sun cream.
M:Wow, hold your horses. This warm air system will only stick around for 14 days. (15) After that, we’ll expect another fast drop in temperature.
W:But at least, until then, my dear listeners, get outside and enjoy yourselves. Why not go for a run and do some sports with your families and friends?
M:Nice ideas. Be aware of the temperature difference between day and night. Always take a coat when you do any outdoor activities. (16)
W:That’s right. Keep yourself warm and stay healthy. Next, we’ll get into our daily business market update. (17)
    Text 10(第18题为总结题)
These days it looks like a large area of deserted land, but Circus Maximus, in Rome, has an exciting history. As one of the remains of ancient Rome, Circus Maximus was the largest stadium in the entire Roman Empire. In the site, huge crowds watched a racing among horse-drawn vehicles. There were two to six horses in each vehicle, and people in the vehicles controlled their horses to finish first. (19)
Circus Maximus was built in late 7th or early 6th century BC, mainly for entertainment purposes. The most popular event held there was the racing. Apart from that, the site was also used for Roman Games during festivals and celebrations for victories in wars. Not until the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Circus Maximus finally fell out of use. (20) Today, the site is used as a park area and is regularly used for music concerts and public gatherings. In recent years, Circus Maximus has become the place for celebrating New Year’s Eve in Rome.
