"School of Rock" was the idea of director Richard Linklater, but it turns out the movie's development owes (归功于) a lot to actor Kevin Clark. The young performer starred in the comedy as drummer (鼓手) Freddy "Spazzy McGee" Jones. "School of Rock" star Rivkah Reyes told NME that Clark came up with the movie's ending on set when the movie's creative team realized what they were planning just wasn't working.
"The ending wasn't landing," Reyes said. "We tried one version of it where we win the Battle of the Bands competition. We tried another version of it where we lose and that's it. It just wasn't hitting. The team was just asking, 'What do we do about this ending?' And Kevin just said, 'It'd be cool if we lost and then the audience started cheering, `School of Rock! School of Rock!' and then they bring us out for an extra performance." Reyes added: "So this guy, at 13 years old, wrote the ending of 'School of Rock.' "
Clark's ending became one of the movie's greatest moments. School of Rock loses the Battle of the Bands competition but the audience demands (强烈要求) an extra performance. The band, led by Jack Black's character Dewey Finn, takes the stage again to perform AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top." Clark passed away in late May after a driver struck him while he was riding his bike. According to NME: "Following his appearance in `School of Rock,' Clark never acted in an important movie again but continued working as a musician. He played in a number of Chicago bands over the years, including his most recent project, Jess Bess & The Intentions."
Black honored his late co-star with a post on social media that read: "Heartbreaking news. Our friend Kevin is gone. Way too soon. Beautiful spirit. "So many great memories. Sending love to his family and the whole 'School of Rock' community."
24. What aspect of Clark does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A. His acting skills. B. His talent for drumming.
C. His idea to develop the plot of the movie. D. His efforts to make a career in the music industry.
25. What is the ending of the movie?
A. School of Rock wins and people cheer happily.
B. School of Rock wins but is challenged by other bands.
C. School of Rock loses and leaves in great disappointment.
D. School of Rock loses but wins big praise from the audience.
26. What happened to Clark after starring in "School of Rock"?
A. He was involved in music events. B. He became a professional bike rider.
C. He acted in many other famous movies. D. He started his new life as a businessman.
27. What can we infer from Black's post about Clark?
A. He was the leader of the movie's community. B. He got along with other actors in the movie.
C. He had many fans on social media. D. He was a family-centered man.

When photographer Birte Kaufmann was on a trip with friends in the Irish countryside, she met Irish Travellers. How could she dig deeper into their culture, Kaufmann wondered. She made plans to photograph them.
A nomadic (流浪的) group, the Travellers have lived on the margins (边缘) of mainstream Irish society for centuries. Efforts have been made to bring the community into mainstream culture by settling them into government housing and enforcing school attendance. But even living among "settled people", they face ongoing unfair treatment.
To get access (接近) to the community, Kaufmann first asked for help from human rights groups, but failed. Then she decided to do it the hard way. On her next trip to Ireland, she simply went to the community.
A young woman came up, speaking poor English. Kaufmann decided to lay her cards on the table. "I told her that I knew who they are and was interested in how they live," Kaufmann says.
"The woman was totally surprised, but finally her family invited me for a cup of tea. I asked them if I could stay with them," Kaufmann says. "They laughed, as if to say, 'Yeah, right.' "
One of the family members - a young mother who took a particular shine to Kaufmann - began teaching her Gammon, their unwritten language. "She tried to teach me words to say if the men are being rude," she says. "She tried to make me feel more comfortable."
The men gradually accepted Kaufmann and allowed her to photograph them. She was able to photograph them as an observer of their everyday lives - lives, she says, that are filled with a lot of free time. As Ireland becomes less agrarian (农业的), the Travellers' work as horse traders, farm laborers, etc. has become more scarce (稀少的).
"On the one hand life was so sad and boring because everything their lives depended on wasn't there anymore. On the other hand there was this freedom - they live their lives in their own way," Kaufmann says.
28. What can we learn about Irish Travellers from paragraph 2?
A. They enjoy living a settled life. B. They are popular with settled people.
C. They are successful in protecting their identity. D. They find it hard to fit into mainstream Irish society.
29. How did Kaufmann manage to join the community?
A. By telling them her purpose honestly. B. By teaching them to play card games.
C. By turning to her Irish friends for help. D. By following human rights groups' advice.
30. What was the young mother's attitude to Kaufmann?
A. Uncaring. B. Unfriendly. C. Protective. D. Doubtful.
31. What is a serious problem for Irish Travellers?
A. Rudeness among their members. B. Having less space to travel around.
C. Losing traditional work. D. A falling population.

When a staging of the famous Chinese opera "Farewell My Concubine" performed by the, Shanghai Peking Opera Company (SPOC) sold out at Princeton University, Jianping Mci, a 1990 graduate, had a big idea. He wondered if there were enough Princeton students interested in studying Peking Opera - in Shanghai.
Mei decided the most important requirement to join the pilot project would be a strong will to study traditional Chinese opera in Chinese, since all instruction would be in the Chinese language. He expected five students would be enough, but to his surprise, 19 students took up this challenge.
The program, which lasted about twenty days, was held 'in the studios of the Shanghai Peking Opera Company. Students' daily study started with three hours of morning training in basic skills. Half of the group learned martial arts, and half practiced water sleeves (水袖) dancing.
During the first week of training, afternoon periods focused on the important parts of Peking Opera performance: the music, characters, costumes and makeup. Over the following two weeks, the afternoon periods became scene study workshops, in which groups of two to five students worked together with teachers to prepare for the performance of an aria (唱腔) scene or dance from traditional Peking Opera.
After two weeks of intensive (集中的) study, Princeton students presented their martial arts and water sleeves dance movements on the SPOC stage. At the end of the third week, each of the six groups presented their scene on stage with the help of SPOC musicians. As a finale, the Princeton students sang a famous Chinese pop song, "Friend," to express their thanks to their teachers and hosts.
Teresa Irigoyen-Lopez, a member of the Class of 2019, described the experience, "It was really a hard task for me at first. I had to learn a new musical style in a new language! But becoming part of the experience and performing ourselves was really exciting. All our efforts were worth it!"

After knowing that she couldn’t bear a child, Helen was sad. One day while she was driving home from the café, a dirty puppy in the road caught Helen’s attention. After consideration, Helen and her husband eventually decided to take him home. And they later named him Ollie.
Two years later, Ollie had grown into a large ball of fur. Ollie was Helen’s world, and she hated it whenever someone addressed him as her rescue dog. Helen never went out without Ollie. One day, they were hanging out together outside a supermarket, unprepared for what was coming their way.
“Hey boy, wait in the car. I’ll be back, alright?” Helen said as she patted Ollie on his head. She locked him in the car and headed to the supermarket because Ollie hated crowded places and never accompanied Helen to the stores.
Moments later, there was a sudden outburst of chaos. Helen was busy shopping and had no idea it was raining heavily outside. The whole area began to flood unexpectedly. People rushed to every open store they could find for shelter.
12-year-old boy Matt was looking for a place to run to safety when he spotted people running to the supermarket nearby. He had no time to think and ran after them.
Matt hurried upstairs with the rest. Suddenly, Helen noticed the situation and was alarmed. “What happened?” she asked a man and screamed at the top of her lungs when she learned of the flood. All she could think of was Ollie trapped in the car.
“OLLIE..., I left my dog in the car,” she cried, running toward the window. “My dog is trapped in the car. Somebody, please...”
Matt looked outside and saw the car Helen pointed to was in the flash flood. Helen was frightened to go out because she didn’t know how to swim. Matt understood Helen’s anxiety and ran to her pet’s rescue.
He grabbed an iron rod from the corner and raced downstairs. “Hey kid, where are you going? You will drown,” someone shouted. But Matt turned a deaf ear to him because he was determined to save Ollie. In the meanwhile, some people placed a call to the rescue center.

作文 1
Dear Mr.Green,
How is your stay in Beijing?
I am writing to you to tell you a piece of good news: I won the first place in the Spoken English Competition of our city. The achievement that I gained is owed to your kind help. When you worked in our school, you spent so much time in helping me with my spoken English that I made rapid progress.During the competition, I remembered your advice: “Speak slowly and clearly with smile on your face.” I’m grateful to you for your help.
I hear that you and your wife will come back to visit our school before long.I’m very glad and looking forward to seeing you.
Yours sincerely,
续写:
He braved the currents and swam to the car. Through the window, he saw a frightened dog staring at him with big eyes. Matt broke the window with the rod and grabbed Ollie. “Come here, boy...” he said. To his surprise, Ollie wagged his tail and obeyed. The dog was eventually pulled out, safe and sound. Matt then put the dog on the car’s roof and climbed up and sat with Ollie, patting him gently so that he would stay calm and not get scared looking at the flood below.
Minutes later, a rescue team arrived. Thankfully, it had stopped raining by then, making their task easier. The rescue team helped Matt and Ollie to safety. Helen tearfully hugged and kissed her dog. Helen turned around to Matt and started crying even more. “I don’t know how to thank you. You saved my baby’s life today.” Matt smiled at her and said, “I had a dog two years ago. I just understand your affection for him,” Helen thanked Matt again and offered to send him home.
