    三、阅读理解

Do you know electricity can change the way we taste food? Don't feel surprised at the fact. A special electric fork invented by Japanese researchers could make any dish taste salty.

According to Hiromi Nakamura, a Post Doctor Researcher at Meiji University of Japan, the technology can be very useful for people with special eating habits. For example, the sick with high blood pressure (高血压) can easily develop a low-salt eating habit and still enjoy delicious food. And with the fork, there's totally no risk of over- salting their food. Luckily, the voltage (电压) is so small that it is safe to use the fork.

The idea of adding electricity to food was first shown to public as an experiment at the Computer Human Interaction Conference in Austin, Texas, in 2012. Nakamura and her team

connected a wire (导线) to a 9-volt battery (电池) and passed it through a straw (吸管) placed in a cup of sweet lemonade. Volunteers reported that the lemonade tasted not as sweet as it usually was, because the electricity created the taste of salt.

Nakamura has improved the technology to be able to make the electricity reach the food through forks and chopsticks. "The metallic part of the fork is one electrode (电极), and the handle is the other," Nakamura explained. "When you take a piece of food with the fork

and put it in your mouth, you connect the circuit. When you take the fork

out of your mouth, you disconnect the circuit. So it actually works as a switch."

Simon Klose, TV presenter of food programme Munchies, who visited Nakamura to try out the fork himself, then said it was one of the greatest eating experiences he'd ever had. ''When I first heard of electric food, it sounded terrible," he said. He later continued to use the fork to eat pieces of fried chicken, and found that the saltiness greatly increased as the electricity was connected.

Nakamura has been eating "electric" food for the past three to four years in order to understand it better. "For me," she said," it may seem like we're cooking but we're actually working on the human taste."

    B. how the electric fork works

    C. where the electric fork was invented

But what exactly is a robot? There are some important characteristics that a robot must have. These characteristics might help you decide what is and what is not a robot. It will also help you to decide what you will need to build into a machine before it can be considered as a robot. A robot has these important characteristics.

Sensing First of all, your robot would have to be able to sense the environment around it. Give your robot sensors: light sensors (eyes), touch sensors (hands), chemical sensors (nose), hen ring sensors (ears) and taste sensors (tongue).

Movement A robot needs to be able to move around its environment. It can move on wheels, walk on legs or be driven by small engines (发动机). A robot can move either the whole body or just parts of it.

Energy A robot needs to be able to power itself. Some robots might power itself with sunlight, some might with electricity, while others with the battery. The way your robot gets its energy will depend on what your robot needs to do.

Intelligence A robot needs some kind of "smarts". A programmer is the person who gives the robot its "smarts". The robot will have to have a certain way to receive the program so that it knows what it is to do.

Researchers at China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, a State-owned defense contractor, have developed and made the world's first robot whale shark (鲸鲨).

The robotic shark has been on display in an aquarium (水族馆)at Shanghai Hai chang Ocean Park since January.

A whale shark is a slow-moving carpet shark and the largest known living fish.

Designed and built by engineers at the Shenyang-based No. 111 Factory, the underwater robot is 4.7 metres long. weighs 350 kilograms and can move 42 metres a minute.

Powered by a lithium battery, it can swim, turn, float and dive like a real shark by moving its mechanical fins (). The mouth and gills () can also open and close like a shark's. The biomimetic shark is made of sensors, multi- joint fins, batteries, and systems which enable it to avoid what's in the way in all directions.

"The robot can reach a depth of 10 metres and work for as long as 10 hours," said Fang Xuelin, a senior researcher in charge of the robot shark program.

"The shark can be remotely controlled and can also swim based on preset programs or its own sensors, "he said.

"We have built multiple kinds of robot fishes… the robotic whale shark is the largest mechanical fish we have made so far," Fang added. "Our robots are to serve three purposes-to perform in aquariums for entertainment, spread knowledge about the sea and aquatic (水生的) animals among youngsters, and carry out scientific tasks such as hydrological surveys, underwater photography and environmental inspection."

"The factory now plans to develop more types of aquatic robots, including some extinct mammals (哺乳动物), for display in parks and schools. It will also promote the products to businesses engaged in fields such as underwater salvage and mineral prospecting," he said.

    七、阅读表达

It seems that everybody tells lies---well, not big lies, but what we call "white lies". Telling "white lies" isn't really that bad. Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect a friendship. A survey shows that each person lies about seven times a day. The only real questions are about when we lie and who we tell lies to. Here are some reasons why people tell "white lies".

◆ Lying to hide something: People often lie because they want to hide something from someone. For example, Paul doesn't tell his parents that he's going to play basketball because he doesn't think they will agree. He tells a lie that he is going to the library to study.

◆ Lying to make someone feel good: Often we don't tell the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks dinner for you, but it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No! You probably say, "Mmm, this is delicious!"

◆ Giving false excuses: Sometimes people lie because they don't want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You think it will be boring, so you say you're busy.

◆ Lying to hide bad news: Sometimes we don't want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a very bad day at work, but you don't feel like talking about it. So if someone asks you about your day, you just say everything was fine.

    63. How many reasons why people tell "white lies" are mentioned in the passage?

    64. How often does each person tell lies according, to a survey?

    65. What will you say to make people feel good although the dish tastes terrible? Why?
