Some excellent girls are under a great deal of pressure (压力) and find it difficult to accept their success. The purpose of the “Blow Your Own Trumpet” week was to help these students.
“Some teenagers will continue to push themselves and never realise that they’ve done enough,” said Ms. Hanbury, head of Wimbledon High School in London, “Without being able to accept when things have gone right, some girls might never be happy”.
The school wanted to help the girls build an ability to get better from setbacks quickly, so they wouldn’t think it was the end of the world if they didn’t do well in an exam.
In the “Blow Your Own Trumpet” week, students were encouraged to talk about their experiences of success and failure. They were also asked to think carefully about their achievements in each subject during lessons, make videos and act out plays to tell the stories of success and failure in classes.
Ms. Hanbury said she wanted her students to be confident in the things they’re good at and to also know they’re not good at everything. The human brain is divided into two sides, or hemispheres, called the right brain and the left brain. The two hemispheres work together, but each one specializes in certain ways of thinking.
Each side has its own way of using information to help us think, understand, and process informa-tion.The left side of the brain controls language. It is more verbal and logical. It names things and puts them into groups. It uses rules and likes ideas to be clear, logical, and orderly. It is best at speech, reading, writing, and math. You use this side of the brain when you memorize spelling and grammar rules or when you do a math problem.
The right side of the brain is more visual and creative. It specializes in using information it receives from the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. This side of the brain likes to dream and experiment. It controls your appreciation of music, color, and art. You use this side when you draw a picture or listen to music.Although we all use both sides of our brains, one side is usually stronger or dominant. Some people are more “left-brained,” and others are more “right-brained”. Our dominant side influ-ences the kinds of jobs and hobbies we have. Politicians, artists, architects, and musicians depend on their right brains. Accountants, engineers, doctors, and lawyers usually rely on their left brains.

四、阅读回答问题
Humor
If you see humor as a certain form of entertainment (娱乐) that people are able to choose or not, you’re missing some of its biggest benefits: Humor makes average-looking (外表普通的) people look cute and uninteresting people seem entertaining. Studies show that a good sense of humor even makes you seem smarter.
Best of all, humor raises your energy, and that can have an effect on everything you do at school, at work, or in your personal life. The increase of energy will even make you more willing to exercise, and that will raise your total energy even more.
Humor also transports your mind away from your daily troubles. Humor lets you better understand life and sometimes helps you laugh at even the worst of your problems.
In my experience, most people think they have a sense of humor, and to some degree that’s true. But not all senses of humor are created the same as other people and therefore I thought it would be useful to include some humor tips for everyday life.
Not trying to be a joke teller.
You don’t have to be the joke teller in the group in order to show your sense of humor. You can be the one who directs the conversation to fun topics that are ripe (成熟的) for others to add humor. Every party needs a straight person. You’ll appear fun and funny by association (交往).
Effort counts a lot.
When it comes to in-person humor, effort is treated as a necessary part. When people see you trying to be funny, it frees them to try it themselves. So even if your own efforts at humor fall short, you might be freeing the long kept humor in others. People need to be allowed to be funny in social settings because there’s always a risk that comes with humor. For in-person humor, whether it is humorous or not isn’t as important as you might think. Your attitude and effort mean a lot.
Some people-and I was one of them-believe that humorous complaints about the little problems of life make humor, and sometimes that is true. However, the problem comes when you start doing too much complaint-based humor. One funny observation (观察) about problems in your life can be funny, but five is just complaining, no matter how smart you think you are.
39.What will make you more willing to exercise according to the passage?

40.Are all senses of humor created the same as other people in the writer’s experience?

【答案】例文
Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear that you don’t like doing housework. But I want to tell you it is necessary for us to do housework.
I often help my mother cook dinner after school so that I can learn how to cook. When I taste the delicious food I cook, I feel happy and proud.
Doing housework is good for us. Firstly, it can keep us healthy and strong, which can be regarded as a kind of physical exercise. What’s more, doing housework helps us develop our independence. When we grow up, we can take care of ourselves better. Besides, sharing housework is helpful for parents. Not only can it reduce the burden on parents, but it also shows our love for our parents.

Yours,
