Dear editor,
I'd like to recommend the famous saying “A journey of a thousand begins with a single step.” to your column.
It was wisely put by Lao-Tzu. Whatever we do, we must take the first step which pave the way for our ambition. Moreover. we still need to make continuous efforts to go further regardless of countless of hardships. As a senior, we should keep motivated and move on.
I’ll appreciate it if the saying is included in the column. (80w)

第二节
When told the cost, the woman's face paled. She opened a worn-out change purse, counting small bills and change. With a deep breath, she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without. One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to get rid of much-needed goods while the cashier patiently took away things with a pleased at $mile, setting them aside. The woman finally cut back on her groceries, paid, and moved down to pack them. (75w)
I approached the cashier and whispered “Include her removed items in my bill, please!” She nodded knowingly, winking at me and finishing the transaction. I moved next, wondering how to slide the extra things into her old cart. The cashier solved the problem by “accidentally” dropping several oranges which flew past the lady. “I'll get those,“ the woman offered kindly to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly finished our plan. Then, my thoughts wandered to the lady who was enjoying a hearty delicious dish with her little girl. (75w)

M: Sally, how was your holiday? You certainly looked sunburnt.
W: Yes, it wasn’t bad, not bad at all.
M: I heard the weather was bad in Sardinia.
W: Oh, it rained and blew hard on the other side of the island. But we were lucky I guess.
Text 3
M: Mary, any suggestion for a restaurant here in Manhattan?
W: There’s always Gramercy Tavern. The food is to die for, but it’s not cheap.
M: That sounds like a good place. I hope the service is good too.
Text 4
W: I’ll go and stay with Kathy in London next month, but I don’t know what gift to bring. Do you
think she’d like a hand-made bag?
M: If I were you, I’d choose something like a scarf. Oh, and how about a box of chocolates?
W: Um, I prefer your first idea.
Text 5
M: Lisa, why the sudden interest in John Grisham?
W: Well, I read his first book, and I found it very interesting. So, I put his other books on my reading
list.
Text 6
W: Hey, Mark! How’ve you been? It’s been so long.
M: Yeah, Judy. I can’t believe it’s been like a year since we had that fishing trip by the river.
W: At least! I’ve been trying to get everyone together, but you know, it’s just hard to organize so
many people after graduation.
M: Yes, work comes first. Well, Elaine and I are thinking of heading up to the beach next month.
We’d love it if you want to go.
W: Actually, I’m moving house next month. Let’s play it by ear.
Text 7
W: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?
M: I’m Mr. Smith in Room 1211. Would you get me a taxi for this afternoon?
W: Sure, Mr. Smith. Where do you want the taxi to take you?
M: Well, I have to attend a meeting at 2 o’clock at the Regents Company. I’m hoping that it is not
very far from here.
W: No. It’s only a twenty-minute drive and you will be fine as the traffic is not heavy at that time.
M: Then one thirty will be fine. No! Make it one fifteen to be on the safe side, please.
W: OK. I will make a booking right away for you.
Text 8
W: Mr. Smith. Thank you for agreeing to speak with me despite your busy schedules.
M: No problem.
W: Can you tell me where your interest in business came from?
M: Well, I think my interest in business came from working in my father’s shop in Shanghai when I
was a kid. I found it so interesting, and I wanted to open my own shop when I grew up.
W: So, did you manage that?
M: Well, after college, I worked in a foreign trading company and gained a lot of experience. Now
I’ve set up my own trading company. I import Chinese goods and sell them here in the USA.
W: That’s very interesting and inspiring. Well, thank you for your time. That’ll be enough for my
school project.
Text 9
W: Hi Peter! How are you doing these days?
M: Oh, Hi Mary. I’ve been looking for a job, but I can’t find one.
W: That’s too bad. Why did you leave your last job?
M: Well, my boss was too hard on me and the salary was quite low.
W: I see.
M: I sent out my application letter to more than twenty companies. Unfortunately, I’ve only had two
interviews so far.
W: Have you tried looking online for a job?
M: Yes, but so many of the jobs require moving to another city. I don’t want to do that.
W: How about going to some of those networking groups?
M: What are they?
W: They’re groups of people who are also looking for work. They help each other discover new
opportunities.
M: Sounds great. I’ll definitely try some of those.
W: I’m glad to hear that. So, what are you doing here?
M: I’m shopping for a new suit. I want to make the best impression possible at my job interviews!
W: There you go. You can make it!
Text 10
W: My guest on the show today is Alice Riches who started the Street Play Project in Beechwood
Road where she lives. Street Play involves local residents closing off their street for a few hours
so that children have a chance to play in the street safely with the help of volunteers. She started
it in her street, Beechwood Road, and the idea caught on, and there are now Street Play Project
all over the city. She first had the idea when her oldest child was still a baby, so that’s about six
years ago now—but it took at least two years of campaigning before she was actually able to
make it happen. So the project’s been up and running for four years now. She’d love to be able to
close the road for longer—for the whole weekend, from Saturday morning until Sunday evening,
for example. At the moment it’s just once a week. But when she started, it was only once a month.
But she’s working on it. Now let’s welcome Alice Riches.

A篇
所以选A,
根据第一段“He hatched an ambitious plan to create a personalized ring for his future wife”可是他是想亲自寻找钻石来为他的未婚妻制作一枚独特的戒指,所以选择D。
根据第二段“ The park is one of the few places in the world where the public is welcome to search for real diamonds and can keep them for free”可知他们选择这个公园是因为这个公园是免费对公众开放,并且挖矿者可以保留自己挖到的矿石。
根据第四段“It was oily and shiny, and we both just knew it was a dimond” 可知Liden找到了自己梦寐以求的制作戒指的钻石。
第28题 A 根据第一段的...which was depressing reading...and in some ways offered a ray of hope.
根据第六段第三行提到的措施有:plant-based diet,controlling pollution growth, reducing financial inequality, developing means by which...remove CO2,所以一共四种。
D篇
第32题 C 结合第一段和第二段来看,第一段描述了一种生活:做着看似正确明智的事情,但感觉生活如此艰难;第二段作者自述自己的感受,最后一句总结...it has used up my energy and I've worked out why.

it指代complaining。

break off中断,clear off清楚,come around拜访,wander around徘徊。
be annoyed with表示对……

Dear editor,
I am writing to share with you my favorite saying, that is, less is more.
Not only does it imply we should diminish our inner desire, but also hints we can prioritize things in our life and discard unnecessary stuff.
The reason why I recommend ‘less is more’ is that I always take it as my living philosophy. Say, when delivering a speech, I would condense my idea into three points, which reduces the audience’s burden and highlights my key information.
I hope ‘less is more’ can win your favor and make its appearance in the Daily Wisdom Quote column.
Yours,
Lihua

Dear Editor,
I am writing to recommend a quote for your Daily Wisdom Quote column. The quote that I would like to recommend is: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." by Winston Churchill.
This quote speaks to the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of obstacles. It encourages us to keep going even when things get tough and reminds us that success and failure are only temporary and should not define us. I believe that this quote is particularly relevant and inspiring for students, who often face challenges and setbacks in their academic and personal lives.
Thank you for considering my recommendation. I look forward to seeing it in your next edition.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Editor,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to recommend a quote for your Daily Wisdom Quote column. The quote I would like to suggest is "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." by Winston Churchill.
This quote speaks to the resilience and determination that are crucial for success. It reminds us that success is not a one-time event, but a journey that is full of ups and downs. And even if we encounter failure along the way, it should not discourage us from pursuing our goals. Instead, we should have the courage to keep going and learn from our mistakes.
I think this quote would be a great addition to your column because it encourages readers to stay motivated and never give up on their dreams. It also reinforces the idea that success is a result of perseverance and determination, which is an important lesson for people of all ages.
Thank you for considering my recommendation. I look forward to seeing this quote in your column.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

When told the cost, the woman's face paled. Obviously, this was beyond her budget. With a hurtful expression and shaky hands, she removed the toy and the pretty dress from her chosen items and cast them a reluctant look as if saying, “Sorry. Maybe next time.” At this, the cashier and I exchanged a pitiful look as the miserable girl paid her bill with a crumpled five-dollar note. Then, she slowly wheeled the cart to the exit. Soon, it was my turn to check out.
I approached the cashier and whispered "Include her removed items in my bill, please." Startled, the cashier had her mouth wide open. Obviously, never had she expected a poor girl’s vanity should be satisfied by a total stranger. Having paid the bill, I singled out the toy and dress, strode towards the girl and handed her the dreamed goods. Her expression changed from a thunderstruck shock, to a pleasant disbelief and finally to a multitude of gratitude as she kept mumbling ‘thank you’. I shrugged my shoulder, looked into her tearful eyes and said warmly, “Wish you a nice day, Miss.”
B. Chatgpt
When told the cost, the woman's face paled. She had hoped it would be cheaper, but she probably knew the toy and dress would be out of her budget. She put them back and moved forward to begin her transaction. As she started to place the rest of her items on the counter, I approached the cashier and whispered, "Include her removed items in my bill, please." The cashier looked at me with surprise, but then quickly understood what I was doing. I handed the cashier my card and turned to leave the store, not wanting to make a big scene or draw attention to what I was doing.
The woman was still at the counter when I left. I wondered if she realized what had just happened. I hoped that the small act of kindness would help her get through the day, and maybe even give her a little hope that there are still good people in the world.
As I walked away, I couldn't help but think about how easy it was for me to make a difference in someone's life. All it took was a simple act of kindness and a little bit of empathy. I was reminded that we never know what someone else is going through, and it is always important to show compassion and understanding to those around us.
In that moment, I felt grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, and I promised to be more intentional about spreading kindness and positivity in my own life. Because in a world that can sometimes feel cruel and unforgiving, a small act of kindness can mean the world to someone.
