I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs(轮椅). Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.
Then I fainted(昏倒)at Euro Disney because of low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy but as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it. I could mot believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids—they have perfectly good legs. Why can’t they watch where they are going?” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in whelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

A boy was at a market with his sister. The sister was standing in front of a toy shop. She was looking at something inside the shop’s window.
The boy asked, “What are you looking at?” The sister pointed at the doll. The boy told her that he would buy the doll for her. The sister was very happy.
Then the boy asked the shopkeeper, “How much does this doll cost?”
The shopkeeper looked at the boy and said, “Well, what can you pay?”
The boy took out all the seashells (贝壳) that he had collected from the beach and gave them to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper took the shells and started counting as if he were counting coins (硬币). Then he turned to the boy. The boy asked him, “Is it enough?”
The shopkeeper said, “No, it’s plenty. In fact, it’s more than enough,” He kept four of the seashells and gave the rest back to the boy.
The boy happily put the shells back in his pocket and left with his sister and her new doll. The shopkeeper’s assistant (助手) was surprised. He asked the shopkeeper, “Why did you do that? That doll cost a lot of money. And it certainly costs more than four seashells.”
The shopkeeper replied, “To us, these are just seashells. But to that boy, they’re very valuable. When he grows up, he’ll remember that he once bought a doll for his sister with seashells. Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and they just need to see if they value for money, work out insurance (保险) issues, and run final tests to check if they can run alongside human-driven cars on the road.
So how do they work? The cars have sensors (感应器) all around which can find other cars and objects on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the car knows how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by camera, and satellite navigation systems are used, so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is to type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.
Sound like your idea of heaven (天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you’re going. In addition, computers would be better drivers than humans—they would obey the speed limit and have quicker action when in dangerous situations.
However, there are many disadvantages of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical (道德的) decisions: If a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun—I’d miss driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made: Should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, and saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars appear. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary.
I’m not certain if I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and common on our roads.
34.When using a driverless car, you need only ________.
A.put the address into the computer B.read the road signs carefully
C.check the cameras D.remember the directions
35.What can we know from the passage?
A.The writer is looking forward to having a driverless car.
B.More things should be thought about before driverless cars go on roads.
C.Driverless cars will cause more accidents.
D.Driverless cars can know where to go and stop and make ethical decisions.
36.The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A.successfully B.especially C.probably D.naturally

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep.
Why does it happen?
A new study shows one reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about possible dangers. It prevented us from getting to sleep on the first night in a new environment.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were told to sleep in a lab for several days as researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity reduced as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the volunteers got better and better sleep experience.
The findings suggest that the different rhythms of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. So, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive (敏感的) to anything strange around.
“At some level, the brain is continuing to work ,even though you don’t realize it,” US professor Jerome Siege told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens, you can be alert (警惕的).”
More surprisingly, this is like the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with one eye staying open.
The researchers think that it is the result of evolution (进化) and works to protect us in possibly dangerous environments.
If you have ever had first night effects, researchers advise you to bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

37.最佳标题题。根据全文和“I’m not certain if I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and common on our roads.”可知,本文主要介绍无人驾驶汽车的工作原理和优缺点,最后一段表达无人汽车的不久的将来,会变得更为普通,选项C“无人驾驶汽车:你为它们准备好了吗?”符合文意。故选C。

Topic
