Results shwed that accurate science reprting didn't persuade nly pliticians and peple wh initially rejected human-caused climate change als had their pinins shifted by reading accurate articles. The study invlved 2,898 nline participants wh participated in fur waves f the experiment during the fall f 2020.
In the first wave, they all read authentic articles in the ppular media that prvided infrmatin reflecting the scientific views n climate change. In the secnd and third waves, they read either anther scientific article, an pinin article that was skeptical f climate science. Or an article n an unrelated subject. In the furth wave, the participants simply were asked their beliefs abut the science f climate change and their plicy attitudes.
T rate participants' scientific understanding, the researchers asked after each wave if they believed that climate change is happening and has a human cause. T measure their attitudes. researchers asked participants if they favred gvernment actin n climate change and if they favred renewable energy.
"What we fund suggests that peple need t hear the same accurate messages abut climate change again and again. If they nly hear it nce, it recedes very quickly,” Wd said. It was significant that accurate reprting had psitive effects n all grups, including thse wh riginally rejected climate change. But it was even mre encuraging that it affected attitudes.
