A good way to study may help your academic results and make the learning process more enjoyable.
For many people, studying with friends is a very effective way to improve your learning outcomes. To find out why, take a look at some of the benefits it offers.
Stop Procrastinating
Procrastinating can mean that you don’t leave yourself enough time to complete your work. Typically, this means you’ll hand in work at the last minute and not perform at your best. For students, procrastination can be a major barrier to success. When you have a study partner, you’ll keep each other accountable. With regular joint study sessions, for example, you’ll be less likely to put off doing your work and achieve better results because of it.
资阳市英语试题 第 2 页 共 8 页
Understanding New Concepts
When you’re learning new material, things can come to a standstill if you don’t understand the concepts or theory behind it. Fortunately, two heads are better than one. When you can share your ideas and understanding with other people, you can help them advance. Similarly, you can benefit from your friends’ knowledge and insight when you’re struggling to understand a new topic or subject.
Testing Each Other
Tests are an easy and effective way to determine what you know. Of course, it can be difficult to
test yourself, and someone who doesn’t know the material might not ask the right questions, which is why a study partner is the perfect person with whom to share tests!
Staying Active
When you become hopeless, it can be hard to concentrate. Due to this, staying active is essential when it comes to getting the grades you’re capable of and reaching your potential. If you have a study partner, you’ll have his or her encouragement and help to rely on.
21. What does “Procrastinating” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Looking for things. B. Making up stories. C. Putting things off. D. Giving up things.
22. Why is the study partner the best to share tests?
A. They spend most time with you. B. They know what to ask you.
C. They can encourage you to study. D. They can learn from your mistakes.
23. Who is the text intended for?
A. High school students. B. The general public. C. Educational experts. D. College teachers.
B
Picture this: two new kids show up at school one day. One is dressed in sport trousers and a dirty
T-shirt. The other looks like someone out of a fashion magazine. Which one is more likely to make friends on their first day?
Everybody knows the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. But let’s not pretend that style isn’t
important. Other people pay attention to how you look. They are much more likely to like you if you are
well-dressed. What’s more, when we look good, we feel more confident in ourselves.
You may think you have to wear a school uniform. That’s true, but there are still plenty of chances for you to show your style.
Put on your favourite dress and you will feel more outgoing and energetic. Wear something you
don’t like, and see how much you feel like talking to someone you are fond of. Put on a nice suit like one that celebrities might wear and watch your posture change. Roll out of bed in yesterday’s dirty clothes and you will never feel like a winner. What you wear on the outside reflects the way you feel on the inside. Good style can even put you in a better mood.
That’s why it’s important to find a style that fits your personality. Different people look good in
different things. It’s important to understand that style doesn’t mean just one thing. Some people may wear elegant dresses, while others like a more casual style. Some guys may feel comfortable in a suit, while others may just want to relax in jeans and a T-shirt. What is your style?
24. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing some facts.
C. By giving a definition. D. By raising a question.
25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
资阳市英语试题 第 3 页 共 8 页
A. We don’t know style matters.
B. We often pretend that style is important.
C. We should know the importance of style.
D. We must stress that style is the most important thing.
26. Which of the following statements is NOT a benefit of good style?
A. Making people have a good mood.
B. Making people feel more confident.
C. Helping people win more competitions.
D. Helping people be more outgoing and energetic.
27. Where can you probably read this passage?
A. A storybook. B. A school magazine. C. A personal diary. D. A survey report.

In 2004, Moe Hunter was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis (细菌性脑膜炎) in the brain. He went into a coma (昏迷) for over a month, during which his heart even stopped. He awoke from brain surgery with no memory, but instead, a new set of art skills.
“I woke up on Oct. 13, 2004. I don’t remember anything before 2004 — everything has been said to
me by family and friends,” Hunter, 38, said. “I really wasn’t creative before, in fact, people used to laugh at my drawings,” he said. “I was more interested in going out, football and computer games.”
His friends and family still can’t believe his newfound ability, describing it as “crazy.” “They’re
still completely astonished,” he said. “It’s insane, but when I spoke to the doctor, he just said, ‘Enjoy it,’ and said there’s so much about the brain they still can’t understand, and this is just a phenomenon.”
Hunter has sold and displayed his artwork at Comic Con events across the country. He builds
complex life-size model of characters from films and TV shows.
“Nobody has really given a medical explanation for it. I just know comas can do crazy things to a human brain. They just kind of said there are many stories and theories over the years and people have woken from comas with skills and even speaking other languages,” Hunter said.
“I remember the first thing I drew afterwards was a Legend of Zelda sketch and my mum turned
around to me and said ‘when did you learn how to draw?’ It was crazy, I haven’t stopped since then. I
just found I had this passion there which never existed in me before. I just feel incredibly lucky but also shocked as I really don’t know where this came from.”
28. What sort of person was Moe Hunter before 2004?
A. Weak. B. Outgoing. C. Creative. D. Forgetful.
29. Why did Hunter wake up with new skills?
A. It’s a normal phenomenon. B. He had a complex surgery.

30. What might Hunter do next?
A. Continue seeing the doctor. B. Give up his drawing ability.
C. Find out why he could draw. D. Enjoy and keep on drawing.

Michael Fish may soon be replaced as a weather forecaster by something truly fishier, the shark. Research by a British biology student suggests that sharks could be used to predict storms.
Lauren Smith, 24, is close to completing her study on sharks’ ability to sense pressure. If her studies
prove the theory, scientists may be able to monitor the behaviour of sharks to predict bad weather.
Lauren Smith had previously studied the behaviour of lemon sharks in the Bahamas. She then used their close relatives, lesser spotted dogfish, for further research at the University of Aberdeen. Her work, thought to be the first of its kind to test the pressure theory, resulted from the observation that juvenile blacktip sharks off Florida moved into deeper water ahead of a violent storm in 2001. Lauren Smith said,
“ I’ve always been keen on travelling and diving and this led me to an interest in sharks. I was delighted
to have been able to explore this area for my PhD...”.
“ Who can say if this could lead to sharks predicting weather fronts, there’s so much more we need
to understand. But it certainly opens the way to more research,” said Lauren Smith. It has been discovered that a shark senses pressure using hair cells in its balance system.
At the Bimini Shark Lab in the Bahamas, Lauren Smith fixed high-tech sensors to sharks to record
pressure and temperature, while also tracking them using GPS technology. In Aberdeen, she was able to
study the effects of tidal and temperature changes on dogfish, neither of which were harmed. She also used a special lab which can mimic (模仿) oceanic pressure changes caused by weather fronts. She is due to complete her study and graduate later this year. She says she will be looking for a job which will give her the chance to enrich her experience of shark research.
32. What is Lauren Smith interested in?
A. How to help Michael Fish predict weather. B. How to complete her study quickly.
C. How to predict storms with the help of sharks. D. How to work as a weather forecaster.
33. What made Lauren Smith interested in shark research?
A. Her hobbies. B. The pressure theory. C. A violent storm. D. Her job.
34. Why did Lauren Smith put high-tech sensors onto sharks?
A. To test the oceanic pressure. B. To study the temperature changes.
C. To know the whereabouts of them. D. To record pressure and temperature.
35. Which of the following jobs may Lauren Smith take up?
A. A deep-sea diver. B. A customs officer. C. A worker in a park. D. An architect.

As the autumn colors fade over time, cold days are well underway. The Start of Winter or “Lidong”
(立冬), the 19th solar term (节气) in China, begins this year on Nov. 7 and ends on Nov. 21.
36 For the northern hemisphere, biting winds blow from the north, crops harvested in autumn
have been stored up, and creatures begin to rest and hibernate (冬眠) for the coming winter.
Three phases (阶段) of Lidong
37 In the first phase of Lidong, water begins to freeze. Ice often encrusts lakes in just one
night in northern China, which reminds people of the coming cold winter. The second phase of Lidong brings frozen ground. The thin ice is easily broken if stepped on. The ice covers and protects crops and

find it. Could you carry the small bag?
W: OK. But there’s another problem. How will we communicate with the locals? Can you speak German? M: A little. I’m taking a class in the evening. And I don’t think there should be any problem when

W: Yes, speaking. How can I help you?
M: I’m fixing up our next project team meeting and I just wanted to check some possible dates with
you.
W: OK, which dates are you looking at?
M: I’ve spoken to the others and they prefer either the third week of May or the second week of June.
W: Oh, wait for a moment. I’ll have an important party on the eleventh of June.
M: Right, I’ve got that.
W: So, where’s the meeting taking place this time?
M: It was going to be in Los Angeles, but I spoke to Ramos in Mexico City and he suggested
Boston. He thinks it’ll be more convenient for most of the team.
W: He’s probably right. It would certainly be much easier for me as well because I can fly from
Toronto. And I’m sure you could find a meeting room near the airport.
M: That’s a good idea.

W: But there’s no milk.

M: This is my first year, too.
W: What made you decide to come to California for school? I hear Austin is a good school.
M: It’s all right, but I think Berkeley is better.
W: So is this where you wanted to come?
M: To tell you the truth, I wanted to go to Stanford. I made it on the waiting list, but 99% of the
people accepted to Stanford go there.
W: Very true. But this is still a good school.
M: I’m not complaining. I just know that I wanted to come to California. Do you know what you
plan on majoring in?

W: Do you know Friendship Day? Let me tell you about it. It was in 1935 that Friendship Day first
began to be celebrated. Many years on, the holiday is now observed in many countries on the first Sunday of August every year. On Friendship Day you can say to your friends how much you love them and give your friends cool greeting cards, useful sayings, beautiful poems, splendid stories, inspiring messages and much more related to Friendship Day. The following are a few facts about Friendship Day. Friendship Day celebrations happen on different dates in different countries in the world. The day has been celebrated in several South American

countries for many years, particularly in Paraguay, where the World Friendship Day — International Friendship Day — was proposed for the first time. On 27th April, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30th July as official International Friendship Day. However, some countries, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. In Oberlin and Ohio, Friendship Day is celebrated on 8th April each year.
