To the cheering of taxi drivers and the honking of horns, the comedian and actor Eddie Izzard ran into London yesterday to complete his 43rd marathon in 52 days. In total he had covered 1, 100 miles. His 43 marathons were in aid of the charity Sports Relief, which raises money for the poor all over the world. So far Izzard has raised more than £200, 000.
Fighting blisters (水疱) that have caused the nails on his smaller toes to fall off, he ran up The Mall and into Trafalgar Square, where he had started 7. 5 weeks ago. In finishing he proved what many thought was an impossible task: that a 47-year-old comedian with no sporting experience could do something a top athlete might find difficult.
After only six weeks’ training he started out on a journey that would take him to every corner of the British Isles. “The first three weeks were the hardest, ” he said. The non-stop pressure on his body made him unable to sleep at night and he would wake exhausted with “blisters on top of blisters”.
But the people he met along the way cheered him up. “People stopped their cars and cheered, they gave me money and food. ” More than 500, 000 people “followed” the comedian, in a different sense, on Twitter. Running into London he looked lean and muscular. “Everyone says my legs look very good but I thought they looked quite good beforehand, ” he said.
Simon Blease, 51, a sports doctor and mountain runner who has been following his progress, was waiting on Tower Bridge. “I didn’t think he could do it, ” he said. “Like a lot of people I thought he would have a good try, but his body would break down. Someone with so little training. I find it extraordinary that he has done it. ”
Asked what he had gained, Izzard said “I know now I can do that. Sport is one of those words that stopped being part of my life when I was about 14. Sporting success was not something I ever associated myself with. ” He now plans to continue jogging and hopes to inspire others into sport.
24. Which of the following statements is true about Eddie Izzard?
A. He was sponsored by Sports Relief in the running.
B. He took part in 43 marathon competitions in 52 days
C. He took the challenge to prove he could be a top athlete.
D. He ran 1, 100 miles for the purpose of helping the poor.
25. What difficulty did Eddie Izzard meet with during the running?
A. Injury in his ankles. B. Inadequate time. C. Sleeplessness at night. D. Pressure to win.
26. What can we learn from Simon Blease’s words?
A. Eddie was a good model for others to follow.
B. Training may not be necessary for marathon runners.
C. He used to think Eddie would give up halfway.
D. He owed Eddie’s success to his strong body.
27. According to the passage, which of the following words can NOT describe Eddie Izzard?
A. Humorous. B. Creative. C. Loving. D. Persevering.
C
Think “art”. What comes to your mind? Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings? Have you ever imagined it's a dancing pattern of lights?
The artworks created by American artist Janet Echelman look like colorful floating clouds when lit up at night. Visitors could not only enjoy looking at them but also interact with them literally—by using their phones to change the colors and patterns. But are they really art?
Whatever your opinion, we cannot deny art has existed for thousands of years and art and technology have always been two separate things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology, changing the art world greatly. Now art is more accessible to us. For example, people used to queue up for six hours but spend limited time admiring the famous 5meter Chinese painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Thanks to technology, however, viewers can leisurely experience a digital version of this painting, where the characters can move and interact with their surroundings.
The combination of art and technology is also changing our concepts of “art” and the“artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but also we can take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more people are exploring new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.
However, it has also raised questions over its overall quality. Can a video of someone slicing a tomato really be called “art”?
Similarly, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct.
Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists' tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of the art itself, or the maker of the technology behind it?
Where technology will take art next is anyone's guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.
- How could viewers interact with Janet Echelman's artworks?
A. By touching their phone screens. B. By lighting up the artworks.
C. By talking to her on the phone. D. By coloring the patterns.
29. What does the example in Paragraph 4 indicate?
A. Achievements of China's technology. B. The influence of art on technology.
C. Easier access to art caused by technology. D. Interaction between viewers and art.
30. What do we know about the combination of art and technology?
A.It lowers the quality of artworks. B.It involves common people in creation.
C.It shortens the time of painting. D.It makes scientists the real creators of art.
31. What is the author's attitude towards combining technology with art?
A. Objective. B. Regretful. C. Disapproving. D. Conservative.
D
Although social media allow us to become more connected to other people than at any time in history, a new study suggests that many Americans feel lonelier than ever before, which is weakening the nation's mental and physical health.
The study conducted by the health insurer Cigna, found widespread loneliness, with nearly half of Americans reporting they feel alone, or left out at least some of the time. The nation's 75 million millennials (ages 23-37) and Generation Z adults (ages 18-22) are lonelier than older generations. Besides, 54% of people surveyed said they feel no one knows them well, and four in 10 reported they “lack companionship”, 3their “relationships aren't meaningful” and they “are isolated (孤立的) from others”.
Douglas Nemecek, MD, Cigna's chief medical officer for Behavioral Health, said the findings of the study suggest that the problem has become common, equaling the risks caused by tobacco and the nation's everexpanding waistline. “Loneliness has the same influence on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, while obesity (肥胖) less than 10 cigarettes a day,” he said in releasing the report.
Nemecek's comments tallied with those of other leading public health specialists, including former Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, MD, who said loneliness should be targeted in public health campaigns like those designed to fight against smoking and obesity.“During my years caring for patients, the worst disease I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness,” Murthy said in a recent cover story in the Harvard Business Review.
The new report, produced in Cigna's partnership with the polling company Ipsos, is based on an online survey of more than 20,000 US adults using the wellregarded UCLA Loneliness Scale to see how widespread loneliness is in America.
32.What does the study conducted by Cigna find?
A. Social media increase levels of Americans' loneliness.
B. Social media do people more harm than good.
C. People become more connected to each other.
D. Older Americans feel much lonelier.
33. Which opinion might Douglas Nemecek support?
A. Loneliness is taken seriously by the public.
B. Loneliness is more dangerous than obesity.
C. Loneliness is not so harmful as smoking.
D. Loneliness is targeted in public health campaigns.
34. What does the underlined phrase “tallied with” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Inspired. B. Varied with. C. Contradicted. D. Agreed with.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To discuss health problems. B. To show threats to Americans' health.
C. To present findings of a recent study. D. To warn people about social media use.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Urban Wildlife
Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors from the wild, a large number of species share our urban areas. As our cities spread, we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors.
Cities are built for humans. 36 For example most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful. But when we cut grass or plant flowers, we destroy natural habitats.
37 When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was the home of
thousands of bats. 38 Now, they have come to value their winged neighbors. The bats are a tourist attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.
There are also structures built with the aim of bringing wildlife into the city. The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is a good example. The park used native plants and created open, natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo. 39
If we learn to share our space, we can become better neighbors to the wildlife around us. 40 Our own future will be endangered too.
A. They are built to protect birds.
B. Our actions sometimes help other species.
C. If we do not, more species will become extinct.
D. They do not always provide suitable habitats for wildlife.
E. Instead of being kept in cages, wildlife can move about freely.
F. They would sit on it and their droppings would fall into the water.
G. At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them.
