But many people may not know this. In Australia alone, there are more than 25 million unused mobile phones lying around, Sydney Morning Herald reported. The gold in these phones can add up to a value of more than $80 million (542 million yuan). There are about 2 billion smart phone users around the world, who change their phone once every 11 months. In China, people generate (产生) 80 million old phones every year, according to New Express Daily.
However, it’s not easy to get the useful things out of the phones. Smart phones have not only useful things, but also harmful materials(有害物质). Guiyu, a small town in Shantou, Guangdong, is one of the world’s biggest dumping grounds (垃圾倾倒场) for electronic waste(电子垃圾), Reuters reported. Many recycling(回收) centers in Guiyu simply break the old electronics by hand and don’t think about the pollution it causes. According to a local government report, 81 percent of children in Guiyu are harmed by lead (铅) poisoning(中毒).
Veena Sahajwalla, a professor at Australia’s University of New South Wales, has made a mini factory. It makes smart-phone recycling cleaner and easier. The mini factory is very small and easy to move around. It breaks the phones and automatically (自动地) removes the useful parts. That way, humans do not get poisoned.

Wang Yaping is a member on China’s Shenzhou-13 mission(任务). She is also the first woman to enter China’s space station. Why does she choose this job? Here’s her story.
Born in a small village in Yantai, Shandong Province in 1980, Wang has been a runner since primary school. Her space dream started in 2003 when China sent its first taikonaut(中国宇航员) Yang Liwei into space. In 2010, Wang became a taikonaut and a strong candidate(候选人) for China’s first flight by woman. However, she didn’t pass the final test. Wang didn’t lose hope and worked even harder. In 2013, Wang’s space dream came true. She became a member of the Shenzhou-10 mission.
This time, Wang, with the help of two other members, Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, gave students the first live class from China’s space station to encourage(鼓励) young people to go for their space dreams. During about one-hour class, astronaut Zhai Zhigang introduced the special uniform Ye was wearing, saying it is called a “penguin jumpsuit(企鹅服)”.
