Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
He stopped the taxi, jumped in with the suitcase and told the driver, “Go to the police station, please.”
She would get off the car excitedly, laughing and dancing around.
1. A, B and C(连词连接动词们)
第一部分、A, B and C结构
我们先看一下“A, B and C结构”。
The boys rushed excitedly to the lake, took off their clothes and jumped into the water.(孩子们兴奋地冲到湖边,脱下衣服,跳进了水里。)
She dashed forward, knelt down and gathered her son into her arms.(她向前冲过去,跪下来,把儿子抱在怀里。)
The singer glanced at the audience, took a deep breath and began to sing.(歌手瞥了看观众,深吸了一口气,开始唱歌。)
My mom handed five dollars to the poor man.
“给钱”这个动作可以怎么细化?联想一下日常生活中的做法,我们可以扩充为:
给钱 = 打开钱包 + 取出五美元 + 递给那个可怜的人
升级:My mom opened the purse, took out five dollars, and handed it to the poor man.
I put the envelop into his mailbox quietly.
I walked straight to his mailbox, put the envelope into it, and then left the house quietly.
再用A, B and C这个结构:
She glanced at the trophy, took a deep breath and said, “Thank Mr Wang!"
The old man sat under the sunset, reading the newspaper and listening to the radio.
Having queued for 3 hours, he was told that the ticket had been sold out.
Deeply moved by the story, the children began to cry.
例如,人教版高中英语教材Module 7 Unit 2 Robots的第一篇阅读材料Satisfaction Guaranteed中,当Claire从梯子上掉下来Tony设法接住她时,作者细致地描写了Claire的一系列动作,如screamed、pushed him away和ran to her room,这一动作过程就把Claire的惊吓、羞愧和不知所措表现得淋漓尽致。
Module 7 Unit 3 Under the Sea的第一篇阅读材料Old Tom the Killer Whale中这样描写Old Tom的动作:We ran down to the shore in time to see an enormous animal opposite us throwing itself out of the water and then crashing down again.
例如,在上文提到的Satisfaction Guaranteed一文中,描写Claire看着Tony阅读时,将动作looked at、reached for和with wonder、was amazed以及“How absurd!”“He was just a machine!”

Last March, Margarito drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he set off for home, Margarito’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Margarito approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Margarito began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a bumpy mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Margarito, driving a four-wheel drive truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Margarito’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Margarito was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Margarito were a delivery worker named Steve and his nephew Mike, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Margarito’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Steve quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________参考答案:
Next, he turned to Mike and yelled, “Give me a rock!” With the rock, he hit the window over and over but had little success. Steve then shouted to Margarito to move away from the window. He balanced himself on the truck, leaned back and threw the rock at the window. Finally, the glass broke and Steve kicked in the remaining pieces of glass. Relieved, Margarito reached out for Steve’s hand and was rescued. The two men escaped and returned to safety.
Margarito was about to thank Steve and Mike when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Margarito took out the phone and pressed it to his ear. His mother’s anxious voice came over the phone, “Are you home yet? Everything’s good?” Tears welled up in his eyes at the familiar sound of concern. Margarito choked up as he explained the accident to his mom and comforted her. Hanging up the phone, he turned to Steve and Mike and sincerely thanked both of them. Cold as the rain was, great warmth filled his heart like never before.

As a nurse at the cancer care center where I’ve worked for seven years, I’ll do almost anything to make a patient feel better. But when I met Patty at the center, in 2011, she didn’t want my help.
She was a tiny 44-year-old single mom battling an aggressive head and neck cancer. Unlike many of our other patients, Patty was alone during her treatment, but no matter what I did. I couldn't get her to open up. She just buried herself in book or pulled a blanket over her head to fend off conversation.
Eventually I hit on a reliable way to make Patty smile: mentioning her nine-year-old son, Stephen. She'd tell me how well he did in school, how he'd been selected to read a poem he wrote at a local bookstore. She desperately wanted to live for him. With three kids myself, I totally understood how she felt.
After a year and a half of treatment, in August 2012, Patty was told her cancer had spread, and I learned she wouldn't live much longer. My first thought was, “What's going to happen to Stephen?”
Nurses at the center shared stories at their meetings about how bright and unusual the boy was. but no one seemed to know how to resolve the issue of what would happen to him when his mom died. My husband, Michael, who too works at the center, started hearing about Patty and Stephen.
One morning in October, Patty quietly slipped away. Michael and I picked Stephen up after school, drove him to a nearby park, and sat on a bench by a pond. I finally managed to say, “Stephen, we're sorry to have to tell you this, but your mom came to an end this morning.” The sound that came out of his mouth was like nothing I'd ever heard before. This skinny little guy sat between the two of us and just wailed (哀号) and wailed. It was as if his whole world was just destroyed.

Something inside me was telling me what to do. I wanted to help the poor boy. Although I had three children of my own and a modest family income, I decided to adopt the boy. I told my husband what I thought, and he immediately agreed, saying, "That's exactly what I wanted to tell you." I told the boy we would give him a home and take care of him for his mother. The boy nodded, crying.
Finally, we took him home with us. We introduced Stephen to our three children and told them that he would live with us in the future. My children happily accepted and warmly took Steven to visit his new home and discussed making room for Steven. I was glad that my children were so kind and willing to share everything with other children. Stephen soon integrated into our family and lived a happy life with us.

Thank you, Ma’am
Just an act of kindness changed a boy’s life forever.
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails. It had a long strap, and she carried it across her shoulder. It was about eleven o’clock at night, dark and she was walking along, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to seize her purse.
But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance. He fell on his back on the sidewalk and his legs flew up. The large woman simply turned around, reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled(发出格格声).
After that the woman said, “Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.” She still held him tightly. But she bent down enough to permit him to pick up her purse. Then she said, “Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?”
By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching.
She did not release him. “Lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. Ain’t you got anybody home to tell you to wash your face?”
“No’m” said the boy.
“Then it will get washed this evening,” said the large woman, starting up the street, dragging the frightened boy behind her.
He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen in tennis shoes and blue jeans.
The woman said, “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”
“No’m,” said the being-dragged boy. “I just want you to turn me loose.”
But the woman continued to drag him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside.

“Go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman. The water dripping from his face, the boy looked at her. There was a long pause. After he had dried his face, the boy turned around, wondering what next. Without saying anything, the woman left and walked to the kitchen. She heated some beans and ham, and set the table. The woman did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him a lot about her job.
When they had finished eating, she got up and took out ten dollars from the purse. “Now here, take this. From now on, I hope you will behave yourself.” She led him to the door and opened it. She looked out into the street as he went down the steps. The boy wanted to say something other than, “Thank you, ma’am,” , but before the boy moved his lips, the large woman shut the door. With tearful eyes, the boy bowed to the door and skipped away.

The Nunes’s family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville, Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son, Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car, she didn’t notice the kid followed a neighbor’s dog into the woods.
When they couldn’t find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours, 48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home. Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.
After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son’s safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.
Tim Halfin’s house was about three miles away. He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip. He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However, as all the previous searching efforts were in vain, he decided to try his luck around his own house.
Not long after he went out into the woods, he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher! Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. He was found outside the range where authorities were looking for him, so it’s pretty amazing that Tim discovered him.

Not knowing the phone number of the kid’s home, he called the sheriff, who informed Araceli in no time. On getting the exciting news, Christopher’s family immediately rushed to Tim’s house. Araceli couldn’t wait to wrap her little one up in her arms and hug him tightly! Tears of happiness rolled down her cheeks.
Para. 2:
Christopher spent two days recovering at Teras Children’s Hospital before he was taken home. Seeing Christopher running around the house, the family was extremely grateful to all the agencies and volunteers, who had sacrificed their time to look for Christopher and shared their panic and worries. They were especially thankful to Tim who didn’t give up hope when chances seemed to be slim. They knew it well that they couldn’t repay those kind people for what they had done but they decided to pay it forward by lending a helping hand to whoever might be in need of it.

Teen Becomes A Local Hero
When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact. that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal -making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her shift. things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911. Then, she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.
The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she’d taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急教法)immediately kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.

She shouted to that man for assistance. The man heard Sydney’s cry and rushed over. Sydney briefed him on the situation, and the man did not hesitate to help the woman. He used the same Heimlich maneuver, but harder than Sydney. And happily, it worked this time, after which the woman threw up the food stuck in her throat and began gasping for air, and she was saved. The woman and her daughter thanked Sydney and the man. Sydney was thrilled to have saved the lady.
The story has made headlines throughout the country. All the media praised Sydney and the man for their bravery, and how calmly she performed the Heimlich maneuver in an emergency. From this story, people realized that everyone should master the Heimlich maneuver in case someone around them choke, so the media called for schools to train students to master skills of the Heimlich maneuver. Some schools have invited doctors and nurses from the emergency department of the hospital to explain the operation of the Heimlich maneuver to students, which has been well received by parents and the community.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________参考答案:
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. As a result, the poor fellow couldn’t pay his bills and he couldn’t even find anybody to lend him any.
Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique (古董) furniture and vases. Carl thought, “If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for a lot of money.”
Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o’clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.
One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem.”
There was an old gun in the cellar(地下室). It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”
He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw(锯).
The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o’clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.
He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman----polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.
With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out a book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold(大胆的)as he could be, grabbed(抓)a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn't get that hint(暗示), since he didn't stop grabbing the cookies.
"How annoying!" she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched(用力咀嚼)some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, "If I weren't so nice, I would blacken his eyes." With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, "Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn't he even show any gratefulness?"
She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed in relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.
