It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying.Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't seesome rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six year- old son,Billy, walking toward the woods.I could only see his back.He wasn't walking in his usual way.He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still aspossible.Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however,he was once again walking in that slow and purposeful step toward the woods. This activity went on for over anhour:walking cautiously tothe woods, then running back to thehouse. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me.I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked;being very careful not to spill thewater he carried.Branches and thorns slapped(拍打)his little face but he did not try to avoid them.He had a much greaterpurpose. As I leaned against a tree to spy on him,Isaw the most amazing site.
Several large deers appeared threatening in front of him.But Billy walked right up to them.I almost screamed for him to get away.AndI saw a baby deer laying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap(舔饮) up the water in my beautiful boy's hand.
Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house.

Little snow had fallen this winter. For Reuven the frier(皮衣制作工) it was a bad year, and after long hesitation he decided to sell Zlateh the old goat. The town butcher had offered eightsilver coins for the goat. Reuven told his oldest boy, Aaron, to take the goat to town. Aaron understood what it meant, but he had to obey his father. Hissisters cried loudly.
Aaron took along two slices of bread to eat on the road. He needed to deliver the goat by evening and return the next day with the money. While the family said goodbye, Zlatch stood as patiently as ever. Zlateh trusted human beings.
The sun was shining when Aaron left. Suddenly the weather changed, and after awhile it began to snow. Soon their path was completely covered and Aaron got lost. Beneath the snow Aaron’s boots touched the softness of a plowed field. He realized that he was no longer on the road. Zlateh bleated (哀鸣) as if asking to be taken home. Aaron looked around hoping to find a farmer driving a sleigh(雪橇) along the way. But he could see nothing.
Aaron knew that if they did not find shelter, they would freeze to death. Suddenly he made out the shape of a hill. When he came near it, he realized that it was a large haystack (大干草堆)covered by snow. Aaron knew that they were saved. When he reached the hay, he dug a nest for himself and the goat. It was always warm in the hay. And hay wasfood for Zlateh.
Zlateh, sat down and seemed to have regained her confidence in man. Aaron ate his bread, but after the difficult journey he was still hungry. He looked at Zlatehand realized that he would not be starved to death. Goat’s milk was sweet.Zlateh ate frequently and her body gave forth an animal warmth, and Aaron hugged her tightly. The snow fell for 3 days and the windquieted down.

人与麻雀
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It's getting hot. It's time to put on lighter clothes and open up the windows. I can't wait to do so. Yesterday, an unforeseen visit to the kitchen happened during the brief time we were out. Two daring sparrows (麻雀) had risked landing on our territory to enjoy the freshness in our sink and some other breadcrumbs (面包屑) on our kitchen counter.
Actually, sparrows are everywhere. The tiny, gray -and brown birds are found on every continent except Antarctica, flying or jumping around cities, picking up leftover food on side-walks, and sometimes chasing with native bird species. These small creatures have adapted to living alongside humans- similar to pet dogs.
When you come across such sudden callers, you are likely to sense it as an unwanted visitor into your comfort zone, or you might receive it as a lovely angel of life. I chose the second option, with no hesitation while my husband preferred driving them away. After all, I've never come to stop to feel the relationship with sparrows.
I recalled when I was a little girl living in the city, I lived in an apartment with a flat roof viewed from our kitchen window. Every day my mom and I would go out to feed the sparrows. She taught me how to call them with a clicking sound she made with her tongue. I have loved sparrows ever since. So every day in my spare time, I can't stop observing and celebrating their dance from our window. I stuffed them with the leftovers on our tablecloth after every meal. And I have provided them with every kind of bases and stands of our house.
Undoubtedly, they feel at ease in our backyard. And that has led them to gather up courage and slide into our kitchen, bedroom or even reading room. Perhaps because they have the feeling that we don' t consider them trouble makers, but friendly neighbors. But I am slightly worried about their droppings (粪便).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

One day, they left some droppings in my husband's reading room.

Like most dogs whose homes are situated on large plotsof land, one New Zealand dogregularly went off exploring through the farmland around his home forhours at a time.

“My mother was a little upset as he had stopped hiswandering,” said Marolyn Diver, whose parentsown Louie.“Wewere very concerned that he might forget where his home was.” But thankfully,Louie turned up at the house a fewhours later.“He looked so tired and had basically just collapsed(崩溃),”Marolyn said.“We were concerned that someone might have hurt him.But then werealized there was a small noteattached to Louie's collar. After readingthe note,I felt complete reliefand relaxed, and then my heartmelted.”
“Louie is the hero of the day,” read the note, which was written by a neighborabout a mile away.“He led me to Maddy in distress stuck under a pile of branches.Cheers,Rob.” “According to Rob,Louie was waiting for him at hishouse and demanded to be followed.Rob said that he was 100 percent sure thatLouie knew what he was doing, and leading him to Maddywas his pure focus,” Marolyn explained.

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it.” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit, Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried, “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy
welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on
it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “ the polar bear capital of the world ” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

Snowflakes dancing in the sky, it was an awfully cold winter. Mary felt as gray as the sky outside. She struggled to get by the tough winter because her bills went up while her income went down.
Her refrigerator sat empty. Her only food consisted of peanut butter, bread and bananas, only enough for two sandwiches. Worse still, it would be four days before she got paid. As Mary prepared to sit down and eat half of her remaining food, she heard a knock at the door. Who could it be on such a freezing night? Robbery scenes from films flashed across her mind. Then Mary shook her head and laughed at her foolish thought-no robber would choose her as a target. Opening the door, she saw a stranger standing outside, body trembling with cold.
“Madam, sorry to disturb you, but I'm lost and get stuck in the snow. Could you please spare a piece of bread?" the stranger asked cautiously and politely in a weak but deep voice.
“I'm afraid not,” said Mary, “but I could make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”
“That sounds wonderful,” the stranger answered. "Mind if I wait here on the porch?”
“Yes, I do mind,” Mary replied, "but you could come in and eat it at the table.”
Not expecting both food and warmth, the stranger entered the house eagerly. Mary hurried off to the kitchen for the last four pieces of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. In a few minutes, she returned and invited him to sit down to eat what she could offer. After eating, the man thanked and said goodbye to her.
Looking outside, Mary hesitated a moment and said, "If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa.” "That would be good enough," responded the man gratefully.
Mary went into her room, and locked the door. The next morning, when she woke up, she remembered the man. "How will I tell him I have nothing for breakfast?" she asked herself. She dressed, unlocked, and opened the door slightly.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”

Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting a new office manager. Many candidates applied for the entry exam, but only one would be accepted in the end. Tim noticed the resumes (简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master’s Degree or even a Doctor's Degree .But Tim was only a Bachelor, and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students. All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes. Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him. Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators (监考人) in the hall , one of them was tall and thin , while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat .They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left .Some of the candidates took out notes and books, some of them brought tablets to search for answers, and some even called others for help .Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim, as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.

It was my first day of school. I loved school: the smell of chalk and colored crayons and having my own desk that was just my size. However, there was one big problem with school: Mildred.
Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn’t have any friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn’t cry.
Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school. I didn’t want to tell her about Mildred. Mother continued to question me, and I finally sobbed out the whole story. I begged not to go to school and didn’t sleep much that night. The next morning she said, “Marion, I’m going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we’ll see Mildred.” Mildred walked from way across down to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.
“Oh, mama, please don’t do that! Don’t say anything to Mildred. It will just make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama.”
“Hurry and get dressed, Marion.” Her voice was gentle, but quite firm.
“Ple-e-ease, mama.”
“Trust, Marion. I have a plan.”
We bundled up against the bitter cold wind and stared out. Maybe we wouldn’t see Mildred, I hoped. But my mother had this confident look. I knew the look well, and I had a sinking feeling that we would see Mildred and that mother would use her “plan”.
Just as we were turning around at a corner when we spotted Mildred. We waited a few moments as she approached us. “Hello, Mildred.” my mother said.

“If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her “dish-washing”, “Where are you going?” I answered back without hesitation,“ I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed.
After half an hour I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I declared to help get the ball for them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草)tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly. I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “ If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,”I thought silently.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck."And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.
"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

Part 7名师精讲
1. 01—父亲的百万奖赏
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad was a nice man who didn’t talk too much. He used to work as a mechanic fixing army planes, but he was sent back after getting injured. Later, he opened a garage with his friend, who sold it behind his back. People took advantage of him, but he just couldn't turn down a favor.
That’s why I felt more than a little confused when a policeman called my office, asking me to pick him up at the station. The old man was found walking alone along the high way. When a police patrol car stopped him, he explained that he was travelling to Nabraska to claim his million dollars.
“What million dollars?” I asked Dad, who was sitting quietly in the passengers’ seat as we drove home.
Dad took out a wrinkled letter and read, “We are now authorized to pay one million dollars to Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, Montana.”
I never knew dad wanted to be a millionaire. I asked him what he would do with the prize money, to which he replied that he wanted a new truck. His driver’s license has expired fifteen years ago when he reached his seventies.
I knew that the letter was a scam, but the old man was as stubborn as a mule. He even slept with that stupid letter in his hand. He memorized it word for word. I didn’t think he could memorize anything anymore. He wouldn’t stay at home either, but ventured out onto the highway again and again, until the police sent him back. In the end, I had to give up. I called in sick at work and the two of us set out in my car to claim his prize.
We travelled past several states. Dad remained silent, while I found it hard to control my temper. Finally, I decided to ask the question. “Why on earth do you need a million dollars for a stupid truck?” Dad replied, “The rest is for you. I wanted to leave you something.” His words rendered me speechless.

Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They instructed their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves--learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza--with money left on the table--if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge(负责).
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mum.” Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸) her head into Daniel’s room,“Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.”Daniel said excitedly,“I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard(庭院) and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly“we haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves(表现好) ,right?”After a while, he added,“We should save money, too.”Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the petclinic (诊所)immediately with Jane as their parents had done.
