However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded 滞留there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again.

Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death.

Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.

Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches 拐杖then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.

The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to MountainsM2M with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. It takes beneficiaries who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.

Jackson says, "I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I'm doing, what we're doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment."

A new device is helping those who are blind to see. Jason Esterhuizen lost his eyesight after a car accident. He never thought he would be able to see light or movement again. But now with the movement of a switch, his world suddenly grew brighter.

He says, “I still can't put it into words. I mean from being able to see absolutely nothing, it's completely black, to all of a sudden seeing a little light move around." It is not full or normal sight, but Esterhuizen can move about in the world around him.

Dr Nader Pouratian says, “ Being able to tell where a doorway is, being able to tell where the sidewalk begins or ends or where the crosswalk is, are all extremely meaningful events that can help these people regain some form of independence.”

The new technology-called Orion-uses several parts. One is a small device placed in the brain. The other parts are a video camera on sunglasses and a processing device that can be carried in a person's clothes. When the user points the camera, a signal goes to the processor 处理器and then back to the glasses. The glasses then communicate wirelessly with the device in the brain. The information causes a pattern to develop in the part of the brain. The pattern helps users detect 识别 movement and shapes of light. And it all happens in seconds.

Pouratian says this technology is a first. "We basically have the video camera and the video processing unit performing the functions of what the eye normally does,“ he adds.

Esterhuizen says that now he can do everyday activities around his home that he once could not. “Crossing the road is much easier and much safer for me because I can look down and just follow the white line that's painted on the road.”

The researchers believe that one day this technology could help people who have lost their vision because of illnesses like glaucoma青光眼or diabetes. It may also help those with poor vision or who were born blind.

    28. How does the new device help the blind to become independent?

    A. To tell them their surroundings. B. To show them its instructions.

    C. To use sound to communicate with them. D. To give them full sight.

    29. What do we know about Orion?

    A. It needs sunglasses with network. B. It totally depends on the camera.

    C. It can function almost in real time. D. It sends a pattern of light in hours.

    30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. The technology will cure all diseases.

    B. The technology still has some space to improve.

    C. Those with poor vision will recover immediately.

    D. Those with poor vision will go blind once more.

    31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A. A New Device Improves Your Eyesight B. Technology Is Changing the Modern Life

    C. Blind Men Are Given the Chance to See D. You Will Get Independence with Orion

    第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Why do people take selfies? Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer this question. 32 People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to admiring themselves too much, the Syracuse researchers said. 33 As social media can be shallow, it is a good place for people to “work towards satisfying their own overmuch pride.”

34 People who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the Syracuse University research found.

Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software. 35

The Newhouse School's Associate Professor Makana Chock worked on the study. She said, posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips, our parents and grandparents used cameras to take photos. Before social media, people would bring back photos to show friends and family. You had no choice but to look at them. If you are a nice person, you commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. 36.

On social media, it is a different experience. People can decide not to look at photos of their friends and family even if they click "like'' or even "love" under the Facebook selfie.

    A. That was the old way of “clicking" like.

    B. Different people have different views about it.

    C. They came up with some surprising answers.

    D. Such people think very highly of themselves, especially how they look.

    E. But men desire to be seen as popular more than women when posting selfies.

    F. There are other reasons, besides admiring themselves, why people post selfies.

    G. Not only cameras but also phones are useful tools to record people's experiences.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once, my uncle brought home a cute little baby parrot. At first, I and my cousins were a little scared, because we didn't know how to handle that little tender baby. My aunt eventually helped us out. She took it and kept it just as her baby. She fed it, she gave it occasional showers and eventually we became quite comfortable with it. Now there was another dilemma 困境that we had — as we were not really aware of its gender 性别we were unable to decide a name for the parrot. So finally my mom called it Mitthu. We agreed.

As it was growing, its wings started growing along, but my family was too possessive 占有欲强的and caring towards Mitthu that they trimmed修剪its wings. They said if it flew, it wouldn't be able to survive outside.

As time went by, we grew, so did Mitthu...It had by now started talking quite a lot...I was amazed by the way my aunt cared for it. She fed it anything and everything they had, before eating. Mitthu was never kept in a cage from the beginning...it is still not kept in a eage... at first its wings were trimmed to protect it...but now as it has grown quite a lol, even its wings are not trimmed...

I sometimes wonder, it has the whole sky to fly, it is neither in a cage nor its wings are trimmed, then why isn't it flying at all? Maybe it is now quite attached to us and doesn't want to leave us, or maybe it doesn't want to leave this comfortable life and go away and face the hard reality of life. The answer may be anything, depending on how we view the situation.

But as I grew older, I realized that the life of Mitthu is not really very different from that of mine. I was eared too and thus was protected from really getting along with outside world. I made my house my world, just as it was taught to me. I guess so did Mitthu. The comfort of my hope became, and I guess Mitthu's as well, the invisible chain that never actually will let us fly.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

I guess not just I, but most of the girls feel the same.
