Like any new ninth-grader on the first day of school, Joemar Class had ninth-grader-emotion(情绪). He’s not used to school in Hartford. He’s used to going to school in his home town of Florida, used to seeing his friends, used to having class in Spanish.
“Nervioso,” he said in Spanish.
We first met Joemar in mid-October in the San Juan Airport. His father, Guillermo Class, had sold his car to buy plane tickets to get his kids and fly them up from Puerto Rico. The island was almost destroyed(毁坏) by the deadly storm — Hurricane Maria.
Now, they are settling into their new home in Hartford’s South End. A week later, using his wife’s car, Class drove 16-year-old Joemar to his first day at Bulkeley High School. After a short ride, he got out in front of his new school. Inside, he met Gretchen Levitz — the school’s program director.
“I see you have new uniform(校服),” Levitz said. “You look great. Are you ready for a good first day?”
Then he met couple of teachers.
“Hello,” they each said in Spanish. They asked where he’s from, and told him they were happy to see him. Then Levitz took him on a quick tour of the school before classes began — to her office the school store, the library, and the dining hall.
A total of 19 languages are spoken in Bulkeley High School. “We have so many new students coming here from other countries every single day,” Levitz said. “So it’s not like he’s the only one who has that feeling.”
“You could tell he’s little worried,” Guillermo said as we left. “But, at the same time, he’s looking forward to it.”
24. What kind of feeling did Joemar have on his first day of school?
A. Angry. B. Excited. C. Nervous. D. Relaxed.
25. Why did Joemar leave Florida?
A. His town was hit by a terrible storm.
B. His old school closed down.
C. He wanted to see his mother.
D. He expected to have a new life.
26. What did Joemar do before he walked into his new classroom?
A. He had a long talk with his father.
B. He learned some simple Spanish words.
C. He said “hello” to some of his classmates.
D. He had a short look around his new school.
27. What can we learn about Bulkeley High School?
A. It has no library.
B. It is an international school.
C. It plans to open Spanish classes.
D. It requires all students to wear uniforms.

Think of the last time you disagreed with another person. Maybe you argued with a sibling(兄弟;姊妹) over what to watch on TV. Or perhaps you tried to convince grown-ups that ice cream makes a better dinner than vegetables. How did your disagreement end? Were you able to see the issue(争论的问题) from the other person’s viewpoint?
In many situations, disagreements are unavoidable. They’re part of life. After all, everyone has different opinions. We all have past experiences that shape how we see the world. Still, not all disagreements are bad. In fact, many people look at them as opportunities to learn. They do so by trying to understand where both sides are coming from.
How can you understand both sides of an issue? Often, it’s best to start by asking questions. Questions help us learn about the world around us. The right questions can also help us learn about other people. In a disagreement, asking for more information can help you learn about a person’s viewpoint. It can also lead you to gather more facts. This can paint a better picture of the entire issue.
When seeking to understand both sides of an issue, it’s important to know the difference between facts and opinions. Remember, facts are based on true information. Opinions can change from person to person. Paying attention to facts can stop biases(偏见) from taking over in a disagreement. This can help everyone involved see both sides of the issue.
Maybe you’re wondering why it’s important to understand both sides of an issue, anyway. After all, don’t most people just want to prove that their side is right? Often, that’s true. However, understanding the whole issue can lead to both sides working together.
Disagreements may be uncomfortable at first. However, when both sides truly try to understand each other, they often find they have more in common than they thought. The next time you disagree with another person, try asking him questions about their viewpoint. You never know what you might learn.
28. What does the underlined word “so” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. Ignoring chances to learn.
B. Knowing more about themselves.
C. Shaping a right way to see the world.
D. Making the disagreements as chances to learn.
29. According to the passage, how can we solve a disagreement?
A. By changing the other’s opinions.
B. By making both sides comfortable.
C. By trying to stand in others’ shoes.
D. By telling facts and opinions apart.
30. How does the author support his view?
A. By reasoning. B. By describing.
C. By persuading. D. By questioning.
31. What’s the author’s attitude to people’s arguments?
A. Indifferent. B. Pessimistic. C. Positive. D. Skeptical.
D
Britain’s streets are becoming increasingly crowded with throwaway facemasks and protective gloves, a survey has found, as councils warn that they are battling with a mountain of personal protective equipment(PPE) litter.
Four in ten councils have identified throwaway masks, gloves and other forms of PPE as a problem in their area, and warned that it could pose an infection risk.
The District Councils’ Network(DCN) represents 187 regional authorities, covering waste collection for 22 million people. “As well as being potentially dangerous for pets and wildlife, there is a risk that they could spread infection,” it said. “The World Health Organization has warned that appropriate handling is essential to avoid any increase in the spread of disease.”
Councils are already struggling with waste collection during the pandemic as residents are creating more rubbish while spending longer periods at home. The DCN said some weeks this summer had been like “Christmas collections”, referring to the larger amounts of rubbish over the festive period.
Dan Humphreys, the DCN’s chief for enhancing quality of life, said: “Facemasks, gloves and other forms of PPE are designed to protect people but poor handling risks doing the opposite. We would remind residents to think about how they deal with their waste.”
Scientists, however, have warned that even if masks are dealt with properly, 124,000 tons of single-use facemasks could end up in landfill if people do not switch to reusable coverings.
32. What is DCN’s attitude towards PPE litter?
A. Worried. B. Tolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Approving.
33. Why is “Christmas collections” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To recall the festival. B. To admire the atmosphere.
C. To advocate the collection. D. To criticize the phenomenon.
34. What can we infer from the scientists’ warning?
A. It is better to produce multiple-use equipment.
B. It is better to use reusable equipment.
C. More rubbish will be produced.
D. More landfills will be built.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The benefits of wearing facemasks.
B. The ways of dealing with rubbish.
C. The problem of handling PPE litter.
D. The importance of protecting individuals.

Five years ago, I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I'd just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row by the window, on the driver's side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no indication that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middle-aged woman look a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully told her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the terminal, a thief had snatched one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she'd brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her tale. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, removed some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, worry still sweeping over her.
An old man in ragged and shabby clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seal directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When by came to the old man's seal, he became suspicious and asked the old man whether he had any money .The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he'd accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.
Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus.

Paragraph 2:
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the incident.

【范文】
Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus. The old man didn't move. He was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take that bus so he could get home before dark. The bus driver, who had been listening to his explanation, stood up, approached the old man, and repeated the conductor's command to urge the old man to get off the bus. Apart from the harsh word from the driver and sobs from the old man, the whole bus was in a terrible silence. All the other passengers including me watched quietly.
Paragraph 2:
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the incident. When the bus driver and conductor raised their voices at the old man, she interfered. “Stop harassing him! Can't you see he's only trying to get home?” “He doesn't have any money!” the driver shouted. “Well, that's no reason to throw him off the bus,” she insisted. “It's just money,” she shrugged. Meanwhile, she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” Later, she also shared her bread with the old man. And I found a Mona Lisa smile of peace and grace spreading across her face instead of worry. How much sweeter the journey was when we
made it a little smoother and richer for others.
