I’ve been teaching college for many years. I’ve long grown used to the torn jeans, slippers, shorts in the dead of the Maine winter, and ball caps worn backward. Still, when one of my students showed up in pajama (睡衣) bottoms, I couldn’t help asking, “Did you just roll out of bed?” He responded: “Five minutes ago.”
I'm familiar with the school of thought that says that how students dress is unrelated, so long as they’re learning. I put it in the same category as “Grammar and spelling don’t matter, so long as they’re expressing themselves”. I wonder about the wisdom of blurring (模糊) the line between bed and desk.
I smile when I think back on the occasions that my parents associated with needing to look respectable. Once, when I was 14 and my brother was 12, my father announced that he was taking us into Manhattan (just a subway ride away) to see the play. My brother and I were excited at the hope, but were shortly discouraged when my father directed us to put on our best clothes, including jackets and ties. “But why?” I begged, not wanting to change out of my comfortable jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers. “Because,” he said, “we’re going to New York.” I can still see the stars in his eyes as he said these words.
So yes, I do want my students to be comfortable. But I also want to pay my respects to those students who believe that appearances count.
I think of the woman — a somewhat older student — I had in class a few years back. She was someone to whom science did not come easily: She worked determinedly for respectable grades on every homework. But I was struck by how tastefully she dressed, day after day.
Once, I said, “You always looked so nice.” Immediately, she answered, “I’ve waited 12 years to return to school, and I dress up to remind myself to be serious about it.”
And, I might add, she seemed perfectly comfortable to me.
4.What phenomenon is described in Paragraph1?
A.Students care little about class attendance.
B.Students show their personality through dress.
C.Students tend to ignore their personal appearance.
D.Students make it a habit to be late for school.
5.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the school of thought mentioned in Paragraph2?
A.Ambiguous. B.Supportive.
C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.
6.What can we learn about the writer’s parents from Paragraph3?
A.They considered personal appearance important.
B.They looked after their children with great care.
C.They often paid a visit to New York.
D.They preferred dressing formally on a subway.
7.Why did the older student dress tastefully every day?
A.To feel comfortable at class with others.
B.To show her serious attitude towards learning.
C.To impress others with respectable clothes.
D.To hide her embarrassment at poor homework.
【答案】4-7 CDAB

I smile when I think back on the occasions that my parents associated with needing to look respectable. 故选A。
Immediately, she answered, “I’ve waited 12 years to return to school, and I dress up to remind myself to be serious about it.”

As doctors and nurses struggle for medical supplies to fight coronavirus pandemic, help is coming from an unlikely place——high school students. The Careen Technical Education Charter High Scholl(CTEC),US,has been using its nine 3D printers to make face masks for healthcare workers on the frontline.
Face masks have been particularly challenging to find across the US since the outbreak Valerie Castro, 16, a CTEC student, is part of a team of teachers and students who came up with improvement that cut almost 30 minutes off the time it takes to build a face mask.
“That's what makes this school kind of different.” Gavin Newsom, Governor of the State of California, said. “Even though all these bad things are happening, we're able to make an impact positively. It's like leaving your little mark on the world.” Makerbot,a New York﹣based company that makes 3D printers, has also helped CTEC to maximize the building process. They've been churning out nearly 100 masks each day, and that production rate is set to be three times as 20 more 3D printers come online at the school.
CTEC staff and students have provided masks to hospitals, dentists, urgent care centers and retirement homes in Fresno County and the surrounding areas in California. “I was shocked,” Stacy Vohra told school staff in video. “We were so thrilled to have the donation from CTEC. This is something that we’ve been needing.”
“The entire staff has switched from daily teaching to face mask production, ”said Jonathan Delano, director of CTEC. “When the new 3D printers arrive, some of them will go to students’ houses so kids can help with the hands﹣on process.”
“That's how we get through these things,” Delano said. “Our high school focuses on giving back to society. Students should know the skills they hold can have an impact on a community. ”
8.What can we learn from the passage?
A.High School students are expected to help make face masks in the U. S.
B.Valeria alone helps speed up the production of 3D face masks in CTEC.
C.The act of the students in CTEC is highly thought of by Gavin.
D.Makerbot helps CTEC to build a factory for making 3D face masks.
9.What does the underlined phrase “churning out” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Producing massive.
B.Selling quickly.
C.Importing legally.
D.Exchanging equally.
10.How do people feel to receive the donation from CTEC?
A.Shocked and embarrassed.
B.Astonished and excited.
C.Disappointed and frustrated.
D.Inspired and joyful.
11.What's the main idea of this passage?
A.Teenagers helped design face masks.
B.3D printing technology was used to produce face masks.
C.A high school made donations to fight the pandemic.
D.A high school made contributions by producing 3D face masks.
【答案】8-11 CABC
根据第三段中“That's what makes this school kind of different. ”Gavin Newsom, Governor of the State of California, said. “Even though all these bad things are happening, we're able to make an impact positively. It's like leaving your little mark on the world. ”可知,加文对CTEC学生的行为评价很高。故选C项。
9.词义猜测题。根据第三段“They’ve been churning out nearly 100 masks each day, and that production rate is set to be three times as 20 more 3D printers come online at the school.”
由第四段的“ I was shocked, ”“Stacy Vohra told school staff in video. “We were so thrilled to have the donation from CTEC. This is something that we've been needing. ”可推知,人们收到CTEC的捐赠感到惊讶和激动。故选B项。
11.主旨大意题。分析全文内容可知,本文一开始直接表明了CTEC高中这所学校制造防护面罩给医疗工作者,紧接着文章具体介绍这所学校如何生产,最后升华到生产防护面具的目的是回馈社会。由此可知,本文主要讲述了一所高中学校通过生产防护面罩为社会做贡献。故选C项。

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on July 31 that China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has been completed and has started providing full-scale global services that day.
In the 1990s, Chinese government approved and began research and development of a space-based navigation and positioning system aimed at easing the country's heavy dependence on foreign networks. The system is called "BeiDou". It has planned a three-step strategy for developing the BDS.
The construction of BDS-1, the first step of the strategy, started in 1994 and was completed in 2000. The BDS-2 system started construction in 2004. By 2012,a total of 14 satellites had been launched to complete the deployment(部署).In November 2017, China launched the first two satellites for the BDS-3 system, which started construction in 2009, and officially expanded its regional navigation system into a global network.
In late June, the final satellite to complete BeiDou's third-generation network was lifted by a Long March 3B carrier rocket. After in-orbit tests over the past month, the satellite recently started its formal operations.
Since 2000, 59 BeiDou satellites, including the first four experimental ones, have been launched from Xichang on 44 Long March 3-series rockets, with some of them having retired.
BeiDou began providing services for civilian users in China and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region in December 2012. At the end of 2018, it started providing basic global services. BeiDou offers accurate positioning, navigation and timing, as well as short messaging communication. The services are used in various fields.
It offers an alternative to Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo system, as well as the United States' GPS.
The operating of BeiDou's full-scale global services is a significant milestone in China's efforts to boost science and technology and strengthen its space industry. The move is a major contribution to the global public-service infrastructure (基础设施) as well as a remarkable strategic achievement of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
12.How many navigation systems are mentioned in this passage?
A.2. B.3 C.4 D.5
13.Which is NOT the function of the BDS?
A.Offering accurate timing.
B.Offering vehicle navigation.
C.Offering accurate positions.
D.Offering cell phone communication.
14.What do we know about the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS)?
A.In the BDS, there are 59 satellites in service.
B.The BDS will replace GPS in the near future.
C.The BDS is a great contribution to the whole world.
D.It took China more than 30 years to construct the BDS.
15.What's the best title for the passage?
A.The best Navigation Satellite System-BeiDou.
B.One small step for China, a giant leap for mankind.
C.China's BeiDou System begins its full-scale global services.
D.The development of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System.

Shooting down an ice-covered track, a bobsled can go faster than 80 miles an hour. 16 The answer is a combination of athletics and science.
At the start of a race, the crews push their sled, building up speed before they jump in for the ride. For months before the race, the crew members have built up explosive power in their legs. That means doing a lot of jumps and sprints. It also means pushing heavy sleds! The push is the crew’s only chance to add speed. 17
The design of the sled’s runners(滑板) reduces their friction with the ice. 18 They may not melt enough ice for a fast ride. Runners that are too rounded may become too warm, softening the ice and slowing the sled down.
19 The rules state that all runners must be made of the same type of steel, and crews may polish them using only approved materials. Before each race, officials check the temperature of the runners. Runners may not be more than a few degrees warmer than the ice. 20
But remember the sled must not be too fast — the crew still needs to be able to reach the bottom safely.
A. Why do people go for the sport?
B. Crews polish their runners for a fast ride.
C. The riders sit inside a hard shell, called cowling.
D. How do bobsleds go faster than cars on a highway?
E. A hot runner will melt more ice and may possibly go faster.
F. Runners that are too flat would spread the friction over a wide area.
G. All other work goes into keeping other forces from slowing the bobsled down.
【答案】16-20 DGFBE
16.根据上文“Shooting down an ice-covered track, a bobsled can go faster than 80 miles an hour.”(滑下冰雪覆盖的赛道时,大雪橇的时速可以超过80英里。)以及后文“The answer is a combination of athletics and science.”(答案是体育运动和科学相结合。)
18.根据上文“The design of the sled’s runners(滑板) reduces their friction with the ice.”(雪橇滑板的设计减少了与冰的摩擦。)以及后文“They may not melt enough ice for a fast ride. Runners that are too rounded may become too warm, softening the ice and slowing the sled down.”(它们可能无法融化足够的冰来快速行驶。
19.根据后文“The rules state that all runners must be made of the same type of steel, and crews may polish them using only approved materials.”(规则规定,所有的滑板必须由相同类型的钢材制成,并且队员只能使用经过批准的材料来打磨它们。)
20.根据上文“Before each race, officials check the temperature of the runners. Runners may not be more than a few degrees warmer than the ice.”(每次比赛前,工作人员都会检查滑板的温度。

It takes sb. some time to do sth.“做某事花费某人多长时间”,句中动词不定式作真正的主语,it作形式主语。故填to travel。
固定搭配: with a distance of ... 故填a。
故填where。

On a beautiful Thursday of this April, Amy and Alan Green took their daughter Abbey out for a walk in the neighborhood. On their way back, Amy picked up a kite for Abbey from the Dollar Tree, blue with rainbows—there are a lot of rainbows decorating homes around the region these days, which helps make life less dull during the coronavirus pandemic.
In the afternoon, Abbey took the kite out for its first flight. At first, the wind was perfect. It took the kite high in the sky. However, suddenly, the wind became much stronger and whipped the kite out of Abbey's hands in a moment. It sailed farther and farther and finally got stuck on the power lines next to a big tree, wrapping itself over and over again around the wires. Since the kite was too high for them to reach, the Greens could do nothing about it. Worried less about the kite than the potential danger it might present to the lines, Amy called National Grid to report the incident.
About one hour later, Mike, a worker from the power company arrived. He carefully unwound the kite line from the wires. After about 10 minutes' effort, he successfully freed it. But unfortunately, as the kite was wrapped so tightly, there was some unpreventable damage. Still, he presented it at the door to Alan Green. As he left, he noticed Abbey took the kite to the backyard. Out of curiosity, he stood there for a while to see how the girl would deal with it. Surprisingly, she dug a hole and buried the kite in a shoebox! Even though he could not see the girl's face clearly, he knew exactly how sad Abbey could be. He really felt bad for her. And it was at that moment that he decided to do something.

The next day, Alan went out to get the mail as usual. To his surprise, there was a new kite—a cute robin with beautiful feathers-in the box along with a note written on the National Grid's notepaper. “I felt bad for your daughter, so I hope this new kite could make her smile,” it read. “Stay safe and healthy!” The note was unsigned.
