When I was 6, my elder brother brought me to the local BMX(自行车越野) track to ride in a kid’s race for the first time. The hill out of the starting gate looked so scary and steep that I backed off. My parents took me back for another try the next week. I fell almost immediately but still managed to win the second place. I’ve loved racing ever since.
I turned pro at 15, which isn’t possible now: You have to be 17 to compete professionally around the time I went pro, BMX became an Olympic sport and I decided to pursue it after high school. I’m the youngest woman with a professional title in the United States.
BMX isn’t judged on tricks or how you handle barriers, but it’s an extreme sport. It’s like horse racing mixed with riding a roller coaster. It starts with a huge burst of speed — I go 40 mph by the time. I’m two and a half seconds out of the gate. Then I try to come out in front of seven competitors at the end of the track, which includes 40-foot jumps. I keep chasing the high that comes from prestart nervousness, big jumps, and that feeling of crossing the finish line first.
Strength and balance are key in competition, so I work out at least five days a week to prepare. I do tons of resistance and agility(灵活) training, both on and off the bike. I also do mental drills with a sports psychologist to make sure I’m focused and confident going into competition. If I make a mistake on the course, I have to move on. Everyone is out to beat me; I need to concentrate on winning so my competitors can’t capitalize on an error and pass me!
I was so proud to win a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio, but I felt I was capable of gold, so that will push me to do better. I’m continually working to reach my potential in the sport. Until I feel completely satisfied, I’ll keep coming back.
    4. What do we know about the author?
    A. She withdrew from her first BMX race.
    B. She became the youngest BMX rider in America.
    C. Her parents forced her to turn BMX professional.
    D. Her efforts resulted in BMX entering the Olympics.
    5. To win the BMX race, the author has to ________.
    A. jump highest B. focus on other competitors
    C. play tricks D. keep balanced all the way
    6. The underlined phrase “capitalize on” in Paragraph4probably means _________.
    A. make up for B. take advantage of
    C. keep an eye on D. take notice of
    7. What qualities have led to the author’s success?
    A. Proud and serious. B. Ambitious and hard-working.
    C. Optimistic and generous. D. Independent and cooperative.
    【答案】4-7 ADBB

Around the world coronavirus outbreak has messed up children’s education. They began to be shut out of classrooms all the way back in February in 2020. Even in countries where schools have stayed open, lessons and tests have been disrupted. Some countries pressed ahead with national exams this year. A few others, including Britain, France and Ireland, cancelled them all. They came up with new ways of awarding grades instead. The fact that big exams have proved so vulnerable to disruption has led to new questions about their usefulness. Are there better ways of measuring what children have learned?
Exams have plenty of problems. They are often unreliable; a study in Israel found that test-takers’ performance can be affected by smog. Many children find them stressful. Plenty of places run them badly. School-leavers in some countries are often set nonsense questions that require students to answer. Countries, including Algeria and Ethiopia, make efforts to shut down the internet at exam time to prevent potential cheating. Grades in American high schools are inflating fast, in part because pushy middle-class parents insist their little darlings deserve better.
Cancelling exams does not always reduce pupils’ anxiety. In many countries the prospect — and pressure of exams probably helped get pupils back into classrooms after lockdowns came to an end. Those facing important tests were generally invited back to school first. Their return helped give teachers and parents confidence that other pupils could safely join them. Kenya ended up letting exam-takers return to school in October, even though it had previously announced that it was cancelling all classes until the end of 2020. Some countries that called off exams this year are still deciding whether and how to hold them in 2021.
Governments may need to adjust next year’s tests, as many did this year. That could mean cutting the amount of material to be tested. Exam boards may also have to boost the grades of pupils who have spent the most time out of the classroom. But the most important exams should go ahead in some form. Many pupils have studied ferociously throughout this difficult year. They should have the chance to earn the grades they deserve.
    8. In the Israeli study, what results in exam’s unreliability?
    A. Some countries shut down internet at exam time.
    B. Exams’ grades can be affected by children’s temper.
    C. Questions in exams measure what has been learned.
    D. Teachers may give unreal grades to meet special needs.
    9. What can we know about the pressure of exams?
    A. It always makes students anxious in exams.
    B. It is relieved when exams are cancelled.
    C. It gives teachers confidence to return school safely.
    D. It helps students get back on track after quarantines.
    10. According to the last paragraph, what governments need to do next year?
    A. Change the testing materials.
    B. Cancel the most important exams.
    C. Raise the grades of student who kept studying.
    D. Reschedule the exams which are cancelled this year.
    11. What can be the best title for the passage?
    A. Education and Examinations B. Covid-19 and School Exams
    C. Ways Better than Examinations D. How to Pass Examinations
根据文章第二段“Grades in American high schools are inflating fast, in part because pushy middle-class parents insist their little darlings deserve better.”(美国高中生的成绩提高很快,部分原因是咄咄逼人的中产阶级父母坚持认为他们的小宝贝应该得到更好的分数。)
根据文章第三段“In many countries the prospect — and pressure of exams probably helped get pupils back into classrooms after lockdowns came to an end.”
根据文章最后一段“Exam boards may also have to boost the grades of pupils who have spent the most time out of the classroom.”(考试委员会也可能不得不提高那些花了大部分时间在课堂之外的学生的成绩。)
根据文章第一段“Around the world coronavirus outbreak has messed up children’s education.”(在全球范围内,新冠肺炎疫情影响了孩子们的教育。)

Smart cities are coming. And you can be sure that hackers(黑客) won’t be very far behind.
We’ve already gotten a glimpse of that future, as cities across the globe start to use technology to connect their services and residents in ways that was science fiction just a few years ago. They are using sensors to collect data — such as traffic, garbage collecting, and road conditions — and then using that data to deliver services to more people and more efficiently.
But this rush to become a smart city has a major drawback: The more connected a city is, the easier it is to cyber-attacks. Hackers have, in recent years, effectively held cities hostage through ransomware(勒索软件), sometimes damaging critical systems for months at a time. The damage can cost millions to repair, as Baltimore and Atlanta have discovered.
And this is just the beginning. As cities add connectivity to their streetlights, power grids, dams, transit lines and other services, they are adding more targets that have the potential to be hacked. What’s more, as additional information on residents is collected, officials worry the result — lots of data could attract nation-states or terrorists who could incorporate the data into physical and cyber war.
What cyber security lesson can’t be taught in this hack? For example: Don’t open email attachments from unfamiliar sources; don’t click on unrecognized links; don’t leave sensitive information visible on the walls or surfaces of your office. But let’s just stick to the most important lesson: The information you share on social media can be used to profile and target you, whether that’s by engineering click bait(点击诱饵) aimed at your particular interests, guessing your password based on your birthday or figuring out your schedule and travels so that an intruder can access your home or office.
    12. What did people use to think of smart cities?
    A. It was the product of science. B. It was bound to be popular.
    C. It existed in imagination. D. It improved people’s life.
    13. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
    A. Introduce the harm of hackers. B. Show the danger of a smart city.
    C. Add some background information. D. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
    14. What is officials’ attitude to big data?
    A. It is convenient to provide service. B. It is certain to bring about revolution.
    C. There are actually potential dangers. D. There’s competition in high technology.
    15. What does the underlined word “profile” in Para. 5 mean?
    A. Describe. B. Protect. C. Pursue. D. Fund.
根据第二段第一句中的“as cities across the globe start to use technology to connect their services and residents in ways that were science fiction just a few years ago.”
第三段开头说“But this rush to become a smart city has a major drawback”,之后就此展开,由此可知作者的意图是想说明智能城市存在的危险。故选B。
根据第四段最后一句话“officials worry the resulting lots of data could attract nation-states or terrorists who could incorporate the data into physical and cyber war”可知,政府官员认为大数据实际上有潜在的危险。故选C。
The information you share on social media和target you可知此处是说你发布在社交媒体上的信息可以让人对你有一个大致的描述并针对你,故推断该词的意思是“描述”。选A。

Let’s focus on what to do when you’re about to tear up your homework, feed it to your dog, or pretend it never exists. What you choose to do is very important because it can affect how you feel about yourself and how you handle frustrating(令人挫败的) situations in the future. 16 Practicing them will make it easier to keep trying and, over time, help you get less frustrated during your learning journey.
    Step 1: Recognize
Recognize your frustration. 17 Allowing yourself to be frustrated and saying to yourself that it is okay is an important first step and is surprisingly relieving.
    Step 2: Remind
18 It means you’re challenging yourself to learn. Remind yourself that difficulty and struggle are a natural part of pushing yourself to grow as a learner.
Just as you can push yourself to run faster by pushing your muscles(肌肉) to their limit, you can push your brain to work extra hard. The more you push, the more your muscles will be sore(酸痛的) and tired in the moment. 19 Frustration can be a sign that your brain is getting sore and tired.
    Step 3: Reset
Try taking a short break. A few minutes away might be what your brain needs. Then, come back to your work. 20 This step is very important! If all you can focus on is how frustrated you are, it may be hard for your brain to be ready to learn. On the other hand, be careful not to use this step to run away from the thing that is making you frustrated.
The good news is that the more times you go through these steps, the stronger your good habits will become.
    A. Don’t ignore it.
    B. You can’t figure it out.
    C. Often, you will see the problem with fresh eyes.
    D. Sometimes struggle and a little frustration are a good thing.
    E. But when that soreness goes away, your muscles are stronger.
    F. Create a plan for what you will do next time to overcome the frustration.
    G. Here are a few steps to help you become better at dealing with frustration.
中help you与下文相符,dealing with frustration与上文handle frustrating situations相符,故选G项。
    17.根据上文“Recognize your frustration.” 故选A项。

    41. rarely 42. significant 43. contributes 44. an 45. to make
故填choosing/to choose。
故填which/that。
故填but/yet。
固定短语be based on:以…… 故填on。
故填to make。

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, who had this beautiful brown haired image of innocence. Honestly speaking, outside, it was pouring so heavily.
We all stood there under the awning(雨篷) and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We all waited, some patiently, others annoyed, because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always very interested in rainfall. As a result, I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens which could wash away the dirt and dust of the world. I recalled my childhood which was about my memory when I used to run and splash(溅水). It’s a great relief from my day’s worries.
Her voice was so sweet that it broke the situation in which everyone seemed to be asleep. “Mom, let’s run through the rain.” she said.
“What did you say?” Mom asked.
“Let’s run through the rain!” She repeated.
“No, honey. We will wait until it slows down a bit. You see, it is pouring.” Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: “Mom, let’s run through the rain.”
“We’ll get wet through if we do. What’s more, I am worried that you might catch a cold.” Mom said.
“No, we won’t, Mom. That is not what you said this morning,” the young girl said as she pulled at her Mom’s arm hard.
“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said. If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and was thinking for a moment about what she would say.
    Paragraph 1:
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly.

    Paragraph 2:
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars.

    Paragraph 1:
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment worth approval in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be protected so that it will bloom into faith. “Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If we get wet, well maybe we just needed washing.” Mom said. Then off they ran.
    Paragraph 2:
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got wet through. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing. Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions. They can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories. So, don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories every day!
