Pet adoption is the perfect way to add a new family member. But if a pet is too young to be adopted, it must be fostered(寄养)first. That's how a puppy named Maggie that was rescued by the North Shore Animal League AmericaNSALA, ended up being fostered by a sweet six-year-old boy.

The animal rescue organization in Port Washington needed to find a foster home for Maggie because she needed to be trained with basic obedience(顺从)skills and to become comfortable with a home environment. NSALA put out a call for a foster family.

Roman Duncan's family was the lucky one chosen for the job. The boy fell in love with the puppy and was able to be part of her growth during those formative months. The family always made it clear to Roman that Maggie would eventually be adopted and move to a different home.

When it came time for Maggie to be adopted, Roman couldn't hold his tears. He decided to write letters to the puppy's future family. He wrote letters about his furry friend, saying "Maggie is so cute and loves to play fetch. She is the best dog ever,"and slipped the notes and some photos into Maggie's paperwork.

The rescue team were surprised and then incredibly touched by the notes they found when opening Maggie's file. NSALA made sure that Roman's notes reached her adopted family. The boy's gesture is exactly what pet fostering is about.

A dog or cat that has gone through terrible sufferings such as being abusing needs to learn what it means to live in a home. Fostering helps reduce the animal's stress and makes it trust people again. It is also an opportunity for people who love pets but can't have them full-time due to some restrictions. Pet fosters can get to enjoy helping a pet in need. If you are interested in pet fostering, contact a local shelter or animal rescue near you.

    24. What happened to Maggie at first?

    A. She was released into the wild.  B. She was settled in a new home.

    C. She was saved by a rescue team. D. She was fostered by Roman's family.

    25. Why did Roman write notes about Maggie?

    A. To express his mixed feelings.   B. To preserve Maggie's paperwork.

    C. To choose Maggie's future family.  D. To help Maggie adapt to new home.

    26. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?

    A. The benefits of pet fostering.  B. The access to fostering a pet.

    C. A homeless animal's barriers.  D. The restrictions to adopting a pet.

    27. What is the best title of the text?

    A. Maggie Lives Happily in a Comforting Foster Home

    B. A Boy Writes Sweet Letter to Puppy's Forever Family

    C. Pet fostering Plays Great Roles in Rescuing Lost Animals

    D. Roman Duncan's Family Adopts a new Family Member

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you' re one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.

Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.

While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.

When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.

When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.

A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.

    28. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2?

    C. It can improve the quality of your daily life.

    D. It encourages you to travel around the world.

    29. What does the underlined word recession in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. change.  B. drop.  C. growth.  D. support.

    30. How can one benefit from a good education?

    A. You can gossip about others' affairs.  B. You are likely to study well at school.

    C. You can work well with your coworkers. D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.

    31. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The benefits of attending college.  B. The exchange with other cultures.

    C. The access to good networking.   D. The ways of college education.

    D

Coffee chains create a lot of waste, from disposable take-away cups to the used grounds that are sent to landfills. Starbucks has started to try recyclable alternatives to the disposable cups. But the used coffee is often unnoted.

The world drinks around 2 billion cups of coffee a day, producing 6 million tons of used grounds every year. When they go to landfills, the grounds release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

UK Bio-bean has found a way to turn that waste into a valuable resource. At Bio-bean, used coffee grounds are processed to remove paper cups or plastic bags, and then passed through a dryer and a further screening process. They are finally processed into the fuelCoffee Log.

Coffee is highly calorific and lends itself to being a really fantastic fuel, says May, director of Bio-bean. They burn about 20% hotter and 20% longer than wood logs do.

While these fuels release greenhouse gases when burned, if they replace other carbon-based fuels, Bio-bean estimates that the recycling process reduces emissions(排放)by 80% compared with sending the grounds to landfills.

Founded in 2013, Bio-bean grew rapidly, launching coffee collection services across the UK and building the world's first coffee recycling factory only two years later. In 2016 they launched their first product, Coffee Log, and are now ready to launch their first natural flavoring ingredient into the food and drink industry.

We've really managed to succeed with our innovation because we've managed to get to scale. What started as a good idea is today the UK's largest recycler of coffee grounds. We are turning 7,000 tons of those grounds per year into the fuel, says George May. Despite being delayed by the COVID-19, we plan to expand our operation into northwestern Europe within the next five years.

    32. What do the first two paragraphs suggest?

    A. It's necessary to limit coffee consumption.

    B. Drinking coffee is popular around the world.

    C. Measures should be taken to recycle coffee waste.

    D. Coffee grounds are the main cause of global warming.

    33. What is the Bio-bean's Coffee Log?

    A. A solid fuel.  B. A natural food.  C. A cup of hot coffee.  D. A tree trunk.

    34. What do we know about Bio-bean?

    A. It is a high-tech company with a long history.

    B. It is a promising recycler of coffee grounds.

    C. It is started to produce coffee and fuels.

    D. It's developing faster than Starbucks.

    35. What does the underlined phrase "get to scale"in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Give accurate measurement.  B. Cover a wide range.

    C. Do mass production.    D. Classify different grades.

Online training is one of the fastest growing parts of the fitness industry. If you' re considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks.

One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers ultimate convenience. No need to roll out of bed at 5 a.m. to attend that 6 a.m. boot camp class, which may end up being full when you arrive.    36    And what if you' re on the road? No problem. You can access your workout video through your phone.

37    Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs most range in cost from 10 to 20 per month. Some are even free. For example, the online Les Mills program offers a free 30-day trial of its 1,500-plus workouts.

Online training also has broad offerings. When you head online, you have instructors from around the globe, all ready and willing to help you master your favorite moves.    38    Just because there isn't a Krav Maga class in your area doesn't mean you can't go online to find one led by qualified instructors.

All these are undoubtedly positiveonline training provides fitness resources to general consumers wherever they are, without requiring access to a gym or fitness studio.    39

Very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer corrections based on your performance.    40    This is particularly concerning for beginners, as they're more likely to do incorrectly. Besides, if you struggle with self-motivation and prefer a social workout environment, online fitness may not be for you.

    A. Another is the price.

    B. But it's not without problems.

    C. The same goes for different types of exercise.

    D. However, online personal training isn't for everyone.

    E. Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience.

    F. That being said, online workouts aren't perfect when it comes to safety.

    G. This means you could perform exercises wrongly, or even unsafely, without knowing it.

David was the most famous troublemaker in high school. He wasn't confident and didn't answer questions. From time to time he skipped classes and got into lots of fights. Teachers didn't want to have him again the following year. However, things gradually changed during a weekend leadership meeting. All the students at school had been invited to sign up for ACE training, a program designed to have students become more involved in their communities.

At the start of the meeting, David was literally standing outside the circle of students, against the back wall, with that go ahead, impress me look on his face. He didn't readily join the discussion groups. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in the discussion. David started to join them and he really had great ideas. The other students in David's group welcomed his comments. All of a sudden David felt like a part of the group.

The next day, David was very active in all the sessions. By the end of the meeting, he had joined the Homeless Project team. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness. The other students on the team were impressed with his passionate concern and ideas. They elected David co-chairman of the team.

The very first community service project organized by the Homeless Project team was to collect food for the homeless in the charge of David. But a group of teachers doubted whether this crucial(至关重要的)beginning should be in the hands of David.
