But Munoz got the last laugh. After training at top restaurants in London and Madrid, he opened his restaurant, Diverxo, in 2007 and soon became the second-youngest person in the world to earn three-star Michelin status. In the last two weeks, the only things that have been thrown by Esther Penarrubia have been a broken toy, an old T-shirt used to clean shoes, a balloon from a party and the backing from a sheet of stickers. Ms. Penarrubia, who has a PhD in agricultural engineering, realized that her lifestyle was called "zero waste" after watching a TED talk in November 2015.
It was when Ms. Penarrubia moved house that she decided to remove single-use plastic from her life to reduce her family's waste and thus changed her lifestyle.
Bulk (批量) buying, reusing old materials, searching second-hand shops and minimizing products which use plastic have been the key factor to her lifestyle, which sees her family send just one piece of rubbish to landfill every fortnight. Ms. Penarrubia tries to remove all plastic products but if she does purchase any, like olive oil, she will bulk buy in a five-litre bottle and will recycle when finished. This also applies to cleaning products. Glass jars and containers are repurposed after use and kitchen leftovers go in the compost (堆肥) bin. The family grow their own tomatoes, cabbages, broccoli and herbs at home and also have orange and apple trees, while she buys fresh fruit, vegetables and bread in bulk from local suppliers for the week.
Ms. Penarrubia believes changing to a zero-waste lifestyle is easier and cheaper than thought, but admits the challenging part in convincing others that it can be achievable. She said, "If you think and organize your buying habits, consume less things from better quality, choose reusable alternatives, buy everything you can in quantity from the second-hand market—then it's not more expensive and you can save money." Zero waste culture doesn't only consist of the reduction of our waste, it involves a more conscious lifestyle and way of consumption.
4. What has Esther thrown during the past two weeks?
A. A broken toy and a pair of shoes.
B. A balloon and an old T-shirt.
C. An old T-shirt and some stickers.
D. A balloon and some glass containers.
5. When did Esther begin to live a zero waste life?
A. Two weeks ago.
B. After watching a TED talk.
C. When moving into the new home.
D. After running a second-hand shop.
6. How did Esther live a lifestyle of zero waste?
A. By eating less.
B. By running a second-hand shop.
C. By recycling and shopping smartly.
D. By making all the daily goods by herself.
7. What does Esther think of practicing the zero waste?
A. It's too expensive. B. It's within easy reach.
C. It's unlikely to work. D. It's much more demanding.

When Snowball, a male cockatoo(凤头鹦鹉), was shown last year in a YouTube video apparently moving in time to pop music, he immediately became an Internet star. But only scientists have begun to study his dancing.
"Real dancing should require that Snowball adjust his movements to match different music speeds," said Aniruddh Patel, one of the researchers from Tufts University. To examine this, Patel and his colleagues created some new music and played it for Snowball to dance in his favorite spots. They changed the speed of the music in small steps and videoed his dancing.
"To our surprise, when the music speed was slow, his dancing slowed down. When the music was faster, his dancing sped up, too." says Patel. "Above all, we were really shocked to see that Snowball even taught himself different dance moves."
Based on their research, the researchers further identified some amazing abilities in the animal: the abilities to understand complex sounds and learn movements, communicative gestures and the tendency to build long-term social bonds, which parrots can form with humans and other parrots.
"The ability to dance was believed to be uniquely human until this research," said Tecumseh Fitch, a biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland who is interested in the origin of music. Their study has opened ways for all kinds of new experiments. For example, what genes are turned on while a bird is dancing? And what would happen if a bird never heard any music for the first few years of its life? Could it still dance later on? "That would be an interesting study and one that could never be done on children."
8. What is the key ability in real dancing according to Patel? ______
A. Learning new movements.
B. Using communicative gestures.
C. Moving the body to different music speeds.
D. Understanding different and confusing sounds.
9. What did the researchers from Tufts University say about Snowball? ______
A. It even could dance with some creativity.
B. It usually danced in one of his favorite spots.
C. It just danced to the music with the same beat.
D. It preferred its own music and dancing styles
10. What is the significance of the research according to Tecumseh Fitch? ______
A. It is the first time to study animal dancing.
B. It has identified the dancing genes in the brain.
C. It shows the educational value of music for kids.
D. It will lead to various kinds of important experiments.
11. What is the author's purpose in writing the text? ______
A. To report an important finding of a new study.
B. To prove that the ability to dance is not uniquely human.
C. To persuade parents to send their kids to dancing classes.
D. To show that male cockatoos are smarter than the females.
D
Toothpaste(牙膏) tubes with remaining contents have been a headache for many of us.But not, perhaps, for much longer.
In 2012,Kripa Varanasi,a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),and Dave Smith, his PhD student, set up a company called LiquiGlide to produce toothpaste tubes with super-smooth surfaces that promise to deliver every last bit of their contents.
Mibelle Group,a Swiss producer of expensive health-care and beauty products,is the first company to employ the technology to lessen the amount of material left stuck to the insides of containers in its factories when it is time for a clean-up.Now Colgate Palmolive,an American company, has used LiquiGlide's technology for its new toothpaste, called Elixir, which has gone on sale in Europe, though no decision has yet been made about whether it will be applied to other cheaper products.
To produce their containers,Dr.Varanasi and Dr.Smith first carved special patterns and then apply a special liquid to fill the gaps and create super-slippery surfaces on the inner surfaces.
Besides pleasing customers who like to get their money's worth, the new toothpaste tubes can help with recycling.Existing tubes are rarely recycled, not only because they have toothpaste left inside them but also because they are usually made from plastic.Mixed materials of this sort are hard to recycle, and therefore end up being dumped in landfill,or burned.
Despite their latest success with toothpaste,Dr.Varanasi and Dr.Smith have not given up on food products such as yogurt and cheese which usually come in plastic containers. So far, cheaper consumer product makers have not accepted the idea. But the health and beauty industry, where products tend to be more expensive,is interested.
12. What can be inferred about Elixir? ______
A. It cannot be held in normal tubes.
B. It is relatively expensive.
C. It will be on sale in China soon.
D. It can effectively beautify kids' teeth.
13. What does the underlined word "slippery" in paragraph4 mean? ______
A. Rough. B. Soft. C. Smooth. D. Hard.
14. Which is LiquiGlide's latest marketing success? ______
A. Beauty industry. B. Fast food industry.
C. Bottled water industry. D. Toothpaste industry.
15. What should be done to help the tube enter more consumer product markets? ______
A. Lowering the costs. B. Improving its recyclability.
C. Increasing quantity. D. Spending more on advertisements.

Maybe,we all need to treat others with more patience and understanding. Then we might be repaid in unexpected ways.
Fifteen years ago,I took a trip to Lecce in southern Italy.Lecce is an important place for art and culture lovers.Walking among churches and old buildings in the city center is a dive into the past.More importantly,it's an ideal place for photographing.
One morning,I got up early enough for a sweeping view of the sunrise, the blue sea, white buildings and green trees. After climbing up a hill,I paused to catch my breath. As I looked around I was shocked by the breath-taking views in front of me.
When I positioned myself to take some pictures,a woman suddenly
approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view.Like me,I thought, this woman was here to stop for a short break, and enjoy the scenery.Beyond my expectation, she stood still as if something caught her attention, not noticing anyone else's presence around her.
For about l0 minutes,I used my camera to scan the sun and review the shot I would eventually take.Patient as I was,I got bored finally. "Is it too much to ask her to move aside so that I can take just one picture of the landscape?" I asked myself.
Of course,I could have asked her,but something prevented me from doing so.
She seemed so absorbed in her observation that I didn't have the heart to mess with that.So I decided to wait.
Another 10 minutes passed. However, the woman was still there.I grew really impatient.I decided to take the photo anyway. With an unwilling touch of the shutter(快门),I left in low spirits.
