I received much ridicule (嘲笑) from my friends for this because they thought I was ignoring them for Lisa.My family education taught me to be nice, and I felt Lisa's needs were much more important than others I knew.
It had been months since Lisa was in our class, and one day our teacher was crying. She explained Lisa died the day before and would no longer be our classmate. She told us Lisa had fought a battle (斗争) with cancer for years.

I've had a strong wish recently to find her mother and father.I'd like to tell them that though they never met me,their daughter had a sweet effect on my life.I have no idea what her parents' first names are.I write to your column (专栏) and hope you can point me in the right direction.

What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are feeling sad or depressed? You probably pat them on the back or shoulder,or maybe you give them a big, warm hug.
We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes(猩猩) have this ability, too, according to a study published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta,US,went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos(倭黑猩猩),which are closely related to humans.
The researchers analyzed the bonobos' reactions after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.
However, researchers noted that not all bonobos were capable of comforting others. In the protection centre, many bonobos are orphans whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more anxious in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.
"Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse at comforting others," Professor Frans de Waal, one of the researchers, told The Telegraph. "Bonobos with moms were able to their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others."
This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who seem more capable of handling their own emotions—for example, the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Even worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students' academic growth and spiritual health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student's sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and choices about smoke and alcohol. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to smoke. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class and culture. Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏曲) with an American classmate. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
12. What can we learn about education with music classes?
A. It allows schools to make more money.
B. It can cause a lot of academic problems.
C. It will affect the world cultural communication greatly.
D. It does good to students' academic success and spiritual health.
13. What do the two studies seem to show?
A. Students with great success attend music lessons.
B. Music classes play an important role in students' students' growth.
C. Not all students could have music classes at school.
D. Students who have music classes do better in all subjects.
14. What does the example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggest?
A. Japan has a good relationship with America.
B. Different cultures have different styles of music.
C. Music makes cross-cultural communication possible.
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Music Classes in School.
B. Music—A Bridge to Understanding.
C. Studies on Music Education.
D. How to Get Music Back.
Do you usually feel you're working hard but still can't reach your study goals? Here are some quick tips to help you study better.
◆ Study with a partner or in groups
Rather than living in a cave with your nose in the books all day, grab a friend from your class and study with him. (1) Actively engaging the information with someone else not only helps you to learn, but makes studying more enjoyable.
◆ Step into your teacher's shoes
Ask yourself "If I were the teacher, what would I put on the test?" If in doubt,by all means, ask your teachers. (2) Remember, teachers don't expect you to memorize every single detail, just the ones they feel are important. It's your job to figure out what that is.
◆ Paint bigger pictures
(3) It's harder to remember each piece of a puzzle individually than it is to recall the completed picture.
Try this exercise:memorize these numbers in order 6...2...9...1...3...8...4...0...5.
Now try to memorize these numbers 629....138....405.
The bottom is easier right? It is the same order of numbers, but put into the context of bigger numbers.Creating context gives information meaning and also turns learning into an experience rather than simple absorption.
