Did you set off fireworks this Spring Festival? This tradition is said to have a history of about 2,000 years. However, due to the great pollution it causes, this year more than 130 cities in China banned (禁止) fireworks before the Spring Festival, according to China Daily. Without fireworks, some people complain that there’s no festive atmosphere. How do you think we can solve this problem? Should we ban setting off fireworks?
Zheng Dinuo
I think setting off fireworks is an essential Spring Festival tradition that helps to create a festive atmosphere and wish everyone a happy new year. On account of the pollution it causes, however, local governments should consider setting off the right amount of fireworks instead of letting citizens set off too many.
Ling Ziqing
In order to avoid putting the environment at risk, setting off fireworks during the Spring Festival should be forbidden. Nobody can deny that setting off fireworks causes too much noise, which seriously disturbs people, especially at night. What’s more, it can cause fires and put people in danger.
Shi Li
We should keep the tradition. It has been a big part of Chinese culture for a long time. Also, our traditions are becoming more important than ever in contemporary China. Nowadays, our rapid economic development means that many traditions are disappearing. Setting off fireworks could raise people’s awareness of protecting traditions.
Li Siya
Instead of completely banning the activity, we should think of other ways to help solve the problems it causes. The government could set strict limits on time and location for setting off fireworks. And people can set off electronic fireworks without polluting the environment.
21. Over 130 cities in China didn’t allow people to set off fireworks resulting from ____ this year.
A. banning fireworks B. polluting the environment
C. losing a great tradition D. no festive atmosphere
22. What do the opinions by Zheng Dinuo and Shi Li have in common?
A. They are in favor of setting off fireworks.
B. They don’t agree to set off fireworks.
C. They suggest setting off the right amount of fireworks.
D. They hope to keep traditions from disappearing.
23. Who holds an objective and neutral attitude to fireworks and gives constructive advice?
A. Zheng Dinuo B. Ling Ziqing C. Shi Li D. Li Siya

Many of us are used to hearing stories of people being pickpocketed in busy places. But most of us are aware of the dangers, so we are safe – at least, we think we are.
According to a BBC program, a growing number of thieves are trying to “hack (侵入) our mind’s weaknesses” to get their hands on our possessions. “In fact, the key requirement for a successful pickpocket isn’t having quick fingers,” said the program. By using psychology, some pickpockets are taking advantage of the loopholes (漏洞) in our brains.
Our lack of ability to multitask is one of the most important loopholes used by pickpockets, the program explains. While this can often be a good trait, allowing us to focus on the most important details in our surroundings, “a good trickster can use it against you,” said neuroscientist Suzana Martinez-Conde.
“It’s all about directing people’s attention toward something else,” said James Brown, who studies the tricks of pickpocketing. Confidence, the power of suggestion, and certain hand movements such as moving your hands in an arc (弧形) are all said to be things that fool us.
Groups of pickpockets use a common trick designed to create a scene and confuse victims. The first gang (团伙) member, a “blocker”, walks in front of the victim and suddenly bumps into them. A second member of the gang then bumps into both of them from behind and stages an argument with the “blocker”. In the confusion, both men steal what they can and pass it to a third thief who quickly runs off with the stolen goods.
Some thieves go even further to exploit our psychology by hanging out near signs reading “beware of pickpockets”. Since this is one of the last places people expect to be robbed, many check where their valuables are, giving away their location to thieves.
But according to Brown, as long as we don’t daydream in public, we shouldn’t be worried. “A street thief will avoid like the plague (瘟疫) people who are demonstrating a very open awareness of their environment,” he said.
24. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To stimulate the readers’ interest. B. To draw the readers’ attention to the topic.
C. To emphasize the focus of the passage. D. To remind the readers of pickpockets.
25. How do thieves manage to steal from victims according to the BBC program?
A. By practicing stealing skills frequently B. By having quick fingers and a brave heart.
C. By studying psychology carefully D. By distracting and confusing victims.
26. The 5th paragraph is mainly developed _________.
A. By giving examples B. By listing statistics
C. By making comparisons D. By classifying facts
27. James Brown thinks people who ________ are more likely to be pickpocketed.
A. often hang out near signs B. don’t know more about psychology
C. are absent-minded in public D. are aware of their environment

My younger daughter, Lauren, has a new car and she has managed to keep it spotlessly clean since she bought it in July.
Lauren’s old car was messy. It was essentially a large garbage dump on wheels. I must admit that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because until I got my present car, all of my many automobiles had been messy too.
The worst thing about her car was that it took on water every time it rained. No one could ever find the source of the leak (漏洞), which created a pool on the floor of the front passenger side.
Four years ago, I got a new car. I turned over a new leaf and, for the first time since I got my driver’s license, cleaned up my act. I gave my old car, which contained old leaves, to my wife, who in turn gave her car to Lauren. It’s the one Lauren was driving – and filling with so much stuff that there was barely enough room in the back seat for her little dog, Maggie – until she got her new car.
A few weeks ago, Lauren decided to go car shopping. She went to a Volkswagen dealership because she had her eye on a Jetta. She had her other eye on my wallet.
Anyway, she saw a 2005 model, which was shown to her by an automotive associate named Anthony. He spent a lot of time with Lauren each of the three or four times she visited the dealership, let me test-drive the car when I went to see it, and didn’t put any pressure on any of us. In short, Anthony gave used car salesmen a good name.
But he was no match for Lauren when it came to negotiating the price, which he lowered to what she said she could afford and not a penny more.
So now, at 25, which is half the age I was when I cleaned up my act, Lauren has done the same. Her car has been clean for almost three months. Even the dog is impressed.
The downside is that my wife’s car is messy. And she wants a new one, too.
28. Which of the following best explains the saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. An apple fell somewhere near from the tree, making Lauren’s car dirty.
B. Until 50, the author treated his cars the way Lauren treated her old car.
C. The author didn’t know why Lauren’s car was always so messy.
D. It’s common for many people not to keep their cars tidy and clean.
29. What do we know about Lauren’s old car?
A. Problems would be created by the leak in the car on rainy days.
B. There was something wrong with the front passenger side.
C. It was given to her by the author when he was 50 years old.
D. It was always over-packed and had no room for her little dog.
30. What does this passage imply (暗含)?
A. Lauren bought her new car with her own money.
B. Anthony was a good automotive associate who sells new cars.
C. Anthony didn’t put any pressure on Lauren when she visited the dealership.
D. In the end, Lauren picked up her new car for a good price.
31. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The author’s daughter resembled him in all aspects of life.
B. The author taught his daughter how to keep her car clean.
C. The author’s family’s attitudes toward their old and new cars.
D. How the author’s family hungered for new cars.
D
As every second passes by, more carbon dioxide (CO2) is given off into the atmosphere. And if that’s not news to you, here’s a new reason to be worried: CO2 levels in the atmosphere grew at a record-high speed in 2013, and the planet’s natural ability to take in carbon may be slowing down. That’s what the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a UN body, said in a recent report.
“We know without any doubt that our climate is changing and our weather is becoming more extreme due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料),” Michel Jarraud, the Secretary-General of the WMO, told the Daily Mail.
When we burn coal in factories or drive cars in the street, we produce CO2. All of this extra carbon needs to go somewhere. So far, land plants and the ocean have taken up about 55 percent of it, while about 45 percent has stayed in the atmosphere.
“If the oceans and the biosphere (plants and soil) cannot absorb as much carbon, the effect on the atmosphere could be much worse,” Oksana Tarasova, a scientist from the WMO, told the Washington Post.
More of the planet-warming gas will remain in the atmosphere and stay there for hundreds of years. It will warm the planet and help land plants to grow. Extra carbon in the ocean will make the water more acidic (酸性的), putting sea life in danger.
The WMO report said the rise in CO2 levels is happening faster than fossil fuel use, so the planet’s natural ability to absorb carbon may be slowing down.
Some scientists warn that our planet has reached a “saturation point (饱和点)”. Imagine our Earth as a sponge (海绵). It has been taking in water but now it is full.
But some scientists have also voiced their disagreement with this idea. Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist with NASA, said that “it is hard to say” whether the Earth’s natural ability to absorb carbon is slowing down.
“There is a lot of variability in uptake,” Schmidt told National Geographic. “You are going to need to look over a longer time period.”
32. Which of the following is a conclusion of the WMO’s recent report?
A. More carbon dioxide (CO2) is given off into the atmosphere.
B. Our weather is becoming more extreme due to human activities.
C. A sponge has been taking in water but now it is almost full.
D. The Earth’s natural ability to absorb carbon may be on the decline.
33. What can be inferred according to the passage?
A. More of the planet-warming gas will remain in the atmosphere.
B. More than half of extra carbon is absorbed by land plants and the ocean.
C. Only extra carbon in the ocean will put sea life in danger.
D. Fossil fuel use is happening faster than the rise in CO2 levels.
34. What does Gavin Schmidt think of the WMO’s recent report?
A. Convincing B. Ridiculous C. Debatable D. Astonishing
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Carbon dioxide worries B. How to protect our planet well
C. A slowing-down planet D. Critical environmental situation
These days, green buildings are becoming more and more popular. To understand it, we have to look at three different areas.
Efficient(高效的)Use of Natural Resources
People need to be very careful about the materials they use. It is better to choose renewable materials instead of materials that take many years to come back. And alternative energy sources need to be used whenever possible, like solar power. 36 .
Meeting the Needs of Users
Planners must also consider the needs and comfort of those who will spend time in green buildings. 37 For example, a little heat from the sun or a cool, light wind is more pleasant than central heating or air conditioning. In fact, many people who live or work in green buildings report feeling happier and healthier.
Environmental Influence
Green architects must think about the effect the building will have on the environment around it. 38 They also have to think about the way it is built: reducing waste and pollution while the building work is going on.
39 . But green architects argue that, although the early costs of a green building are higher, the final costs will be lower. Through green architecture, a building’s energy costs, for example, can easily be 30 percent lower than those of a traditional building. 40 So, although green buildings are more expensive to build, they are less expensive to operate.
A. Critics(评论家)point to the high cost of green design.
B. In other words, meeting their needs is important.
C. For example, they might try to use as little ground space as possible.
D. They have to think about the cost.
E. The natural resources of the earth offer the green architects many possibilities.
F. Over time, that is a lot of money.
G. In many cases, green energy is also more comfortable for people.

However, due to the great pollution it causes,可知;选项D和C都是禁放烟花的可能结果;选项A是禁令本身内容,不是下这个禁令的原因。
I think setting off fireworks is an essential Spring Festival tradition… We should keep the tradition.
23. 答案为D,末段Li Siya既不支持照旧样燃放烟花,也不同意完全禁止,而是we should think of other ways to help solve the problems it causes;并且还建设性的提出“严格限制燃放烟花的时间地点”和“考虑不污染环境的电子烟花”的建议。
By using psychology, some pickpockets are taking advantage of the loopholes (漏洞) in our brains. Our lack of ability to multitask is one of the most important loopholes used by pickpockets. Groups of pickpockets use a common trick designed to create a scene and confuse victims. 选项A,苦练行窃技能,考生以为≠作者以为;选项B≠2段2句“In fact, the key requirement for a successful pickpocket isn’t having quick fingers,”;选项C“认真学习心理学”还不行,还要学以致用才行。
But according to Brown, as long as we don’t daydream in public, we shouldn’t be worried.
Lauren’s old car was messy和2段末句until I got my present car, all of my many automobiles had been messy too. Four years ago, I got a new car. I turned over a new leaf 和8段1句So now, at 25, which is half the age I was when I cleaned up my act可知作者是50岁时买了一辆新车后才开始转变让车保持干净整洁的。
选项B≠3段末which created a pool on the floor of the front passenger side. I gave my old car, which contained old leaves, to my wife, who in turn gave her car to Lauren. 作者的旧车给了妻子,妻子的之前开的车则转给女儿;选项D前半句正确,但后半句没有狗呆的空间 ≠ 4段末句there was barely enough room in the back seat for her little dog,没有给狗的足够空间。
She had her other eye on my wallet;选项B不符合6段末句,据Anthony gave used car salesmen a good name.
32. 答案为D,根据1段2句后半句可知,here’s a new reason to be worried: CO2 levels in the atmosphere grew at a record-high speed in 2013, and the planet’s natural ability to take in carbon may be slowing down.
So far, land plants and the ocean have taken up about 55 percent of it…; 选项A是来自5段1句的正确信息,但太直接了;选项C与5段末句信息相似,但加only就太绝对了;选项D≠6段1句,the rise in CO2 levels和fossil fuel use前后颠倒了。
But some scientists have also voiced their disagreement with this idea.但是另外一些科学家不同意该报告的观点,后面又说“it is hard to say” whether the Earth’s natural ability to absorb carbon is slowing down.

W: Well, I’ve run at least 300 miles on this pair of shoes, and I’m ready for new ones.
M: OK. But try not to buy such an expensive pair this time.

W: Why do you say that?

W: Well…yes. You know she’s coming to visit for a pretty long time.
M: It’s only for a month. That’s not that long.
W: It is to me. I guess I’ll find a way to deal with it… But it will be nice if you can defend me sometimes when she criticizes me. (10)

Text 8
W: We made it. My legs are going to fall off. I’m so tired. Pass me the water, please.
M: Yes! We got to the top of the Great Wall! (11) Not many people make it this far. And I don’t feel very tired actually.
W: Danny, this is just one part of the Great Wall. Even though it might be the highest spot around, this is not the “top”.
M: Wait, so if this isn’t the tallest spot, then why did we hike up these dangerous stairs?
W: Oh, come on. We did it for the exercise. Also, the air up here is cleaner than it is in the city.
M: Yes, that’s true. Look, the sky is so blue here.
W: When we started off from the city this morning, the sky was still yellow and my lungs were killing me. (12) But now I feel so comfortable with the fresh air.
M: So, what are we going to do now?
W: We go back down! It’s getting dark. I heard about an old couple who came to the wall and didn’t get back by dark. They spent the night on the wall. Luckily for them, it was summer. (13)
Text 9
M: Good morning. Can I help you?
W: I’m here to ask about the job you have posted in the window. (14)
M: Yes. We are hiring personal shoppers. Do you have any experience?
W: Well… I have a lot of experience helping people shop. I like to help people and I’m very good at finding things that they might like. (15)
M: Who have you helped?
W: Let me see… I’ve helped my mother, my aunt and many of my friends.
M: I see. Well, you should know that it is difficult to satisfy our customers. They are busy people who want nice clothes, but they don’t have time to do a lot of shopping themselves.
W: That sounds perfect for me. I don’t mind spending my days in stores. I choose things very carefully. (16)
M: You should know that our customers have high expectations. You may find working with them quite challenging.
W: I’m prepared for that. (16)
M: OK. Well, I’ll take your application. We posted the job online as well, so we will probably get a lot of applications. But I will let the boss know that I spoke with you and that you seem to really want the job.
W: Thanks. I appreciate that. When will you be doing interviews? (17)
M: Well, today is Wednesday… So, I think we’ll start them from tomorrow. (17) If you are chosen for an interview, we’ll call you within a few days.
Text 10
Twelve children’s hospitals in Glasgow, Scotland have started chaining children’s toys to prevent thieves from stealing them. The hospital is using bicycle locks to keep its toys and other valuables from being stolen. Glen Fidick, father of a patient, said he was annoyed that anyone would steal toys from a hospital. He told reporters, “These toys were given to sick children. They’re provided by the hospital, and people are stealing them. (18) (19) I was shocked to see that a children’s toy had a bike lock on it! I was talking to the nurses about how upsetting the whole situation was. They are doing the best they can, but it’s still not good enough.” A hospital spokesman said, “Unfortunately, we do get toys and games taken from our hospitals. It is not a regular event, but we encourage staff to lock away the more popular and more expensive items.” He added, “As with any large building open to the public, we advise visitors and our own staff to be careful with the expensive items.” (20) It is not only toys that are being stolen. The television in the waiting room has also gone missing. Mr. Fidick said, “Stealing toys while the hospital staff are looking after the children is a sad reflection on society. I cannot believe this is happening in our country.”
