In 2006, Jackie Briggs was working 60 hours a week at a high-pressure IT job. One Saturday afternoon, she decided to take some time for herself and go to a women’s health conference. As she was walking around looking at different stands, someone approached her.
“This lovely dark-haired woman came up to me, ‘Excuse me, but I can’t help but notice your arm,’ and she said,” Briggs remembers. That day, Briggs had uncharacteristically decided to wear a sleeveless dress, leaving a rose-shaped birthmark on her upper arm exposed. The woman asked Briggs if she had seen a doctor about the birthmark, and when Briggs assured her that she had, the stranger persisted. “She pressed me and said, ‘When?’ I had to stop to think. I counted back…and it had been over three years.”
When the woman heard how long it had been, she urged Briggs to call her doctor. After explaining that she was a nurse at a plastic surgeon’s office, she gently reached out and touched Briggs’ arm. “Really, don’t wait,” she said.
When Briggs followed up with her doctor, she learned that the woman had saved her life. It turned out that the birthmark was actually a melanoma—one of the fastest-moving and deadliest types of skin cancers. “If I hadn’t listened to her, I probably wouldn’t be here,” Briggs said. Briggs underwent surgery and had the melanoma removed. She’s now happily retired and just finished writing her first novel. Her unsung hero, she said, saved her life. “My six-inch ragged scar that travels almost from the top of my shoulder down my arm is my everyday reminder of her…my guardian angel,” she said.

Limiting your child’s candy this Halloween might be more of a trick than a treat, experts say. Once you’re a grown-up raising kids, that bag full of candy might be the scariest part of Halloween — whether it’s concern about a potential sugar rush, worries of parenting perfectionism or diet culture anxiety.
“It makes sense to be scared, because we’ve been taught to be scared,” said Oona Hanson, a parent coach based in Los Angeles. “Sugar is sort of the boogeyman in our current cultural conversation.”
But micromanaging your child’s candy supply can backfire (适得其反),leading to an overvaluing of sweets, binge (暴食) behavior or unhealthy restriction in your child, said Natalie Mokari, a registered dietitian-nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina.
As stressful as it may be to see your child faced with more candy in one night than they would eat in an entire year, the best approach may be to lean into the joy, she added. “They are only in that age where they want to trick or treat for just a small glimpse of time — it’s so short-lived,” Mokari said. “Let them enjoy that day.”
Experts aren’t suggesting kids have sugar all day every day. The American Heart Association and the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee — groups charged with providing science-based recommendations every live years — have recommended lower daily levels of sugar. Too much added sugar has been associated with cardiovascular disease and lack of essential nutrients.
But a healthy relationship with food has balance, and you can keep your kids’ diets full of nutrients while allowing them lo eat sweets, Mokari said.
8.Why are the grown-ups raising kids scared at Halloween?
A.Because they don’t look perfect enough.
B.Because their children faced too much candy.
C.Because they’ve been taught to be.
D.Because they don’t know the diet culture.
9.Which of the following best explains “Sugar is sort of the boogeyman” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Sugar can make us scared.
B.Sugar is a sort of healthy food.
C.Sugar is harmful to our health.
D.Sugar is a sort of essential nutrient.
10.Which of the following statements will Natalie Mokari probably agree with?
A.Kids should have sugar all day every day.
B.It makes sense to be scared with that bag full of candy.
C.It’s a good idea to micromanage your child’s candy supply.
D.Kids would have much joy when treated to candy at Halloween.
11.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A.Diseases associated with sugar.
B.The right attitude towards sugar.
C.Allowing your kids to eat sweets.
D.Keeping your kids’ diets full of nutrients.
The goats raised by a farmer in eastern China are being hailed by local media as a “rival (对手)” to an invasive plant species which Chinese authorities have been calling on the public to help remove for years.
Xiang Jizhong from Zhejiang said this year he has fed his herd of thousands of goats with Solidago canadensis L.,a plant informally known as Canadian Yellow Flower in China. His goats consume as much as seven tonnes of the invasive plant every day, the Zhejiang Daily reported.
The plant species is native to North America and often forms colonies of upright plants, with many small yellow flowers. It is an invasive plant in other parts of the continent and several areas worldwide, including Europe and Asia.
Xiang said he noticed the authorities’ alert about the Canadian Yellow Flower years ago, but last year contacted the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences to ask about feeding his goats the plant. “We discovered that although it is dangerous to other plants, it is a super food for animals in terms of nutrition. The content of crude protein in it is nearly equal to that of bean plants,” he said.
“Feeding goats with this plant is like people eating hong shao rou (a famous Chinese meat dish ‘braised pork’),” said Xiang.
The other advantage of using Canadian Yellow Flower to feed goats is that it reduced Xiang’s farm’s costs by 40-50 percent. He said he bought around 5 tonnes of this plant every day at one yuan per kg. Villagers earn a daily income of more than 100 yuan per person from harvesting the Canadian Yellow Flower for the farm.
Experts said there was no need to worry that the goat’s waste would spread the plant’s seeds, as they were broken down in the animal’s digestive system.
12.What can we learn about Canadian Yellow Flower?
A.It’s native to several continents. B.It’s as delicious as hong shao rou.
C.It’s an invasive plant in China. D.It’s introduced to China as animal food.
13.What do Chinese authorities think of Canadian Yellow Flower?
A.It can reduce goat farm’s cost B.It is a super food for animals.
C.It should be grown (on the farm.) D.It should be got rid of.
14.Why did Xiang contact the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences?
A.Because he wanted to make use of the plant.
B.Because his goats were lacking in food.
C.Because Chinese authorities asked him to.
D.Because he wanted to increase the villagers’ income.
15.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A newspaper. B.A guidebook.
C.A textbook. D.A novel.

Dedicated educator is on a mission to revive rural education in a remote mountainous community and provide the best education to its children, one school at a time.
With her ponytail and big, square glasses, Cheng Feng looks every bit the schoolteacher. Yet, to many of her students, the 33-year-old is more than that. Cheng’s care for her rural students has extended beyond the classroom and makes her a mother figure to them all.
During the just past summer vacation, Cheng didn’t take time off but paid home visits to rural students of the Liling Primary School, which is located in the mountains more than 120 kilometers from the central area of Poyang county, East Chin’s Jiangxi province.
Most students have been left behind by their parents, who have to go to work far away from home and are looked after by their grandparents.
“Seeing these special families and special children is what made me realize the importance of rural education, and it is one of the major reasons why I have stuck around all these years,” says Cheng, who also grew up in Poyang.
Since learning that one of her students, Tan Yeting, and her brother, were just depending on the small income of their grandparents’ handmade broom business, Cheng would pay regular visits to Tan’s home. She would check the homework assignment of the two children, play games with them and cut their hair. These interactions have helped both children grow in confidence and shake off their timid nature at school.
“Cheng is just like our mother,” Tan says.
“I feel like I can talk to her about anything, ”she adds.
Cheng voluntarily chose to move to the school last year after she learned it was in need of faculty members. She has since helped to improve the teaching facilities, and went out of her way to reach children scattered around the surrounding rural area and persuade them to come to school.

NASA is making preparations to send a crew to the moon who will explore the lunar surface with the hope of constructing a stable habitat. Although the American space agency focuses on just sending astronauts, other companies are looking further into the future for when humans will colonize the natural satellite.
Experts at Money, a company for consumer credit products, released the first-ever moon loan guide that reveals living on the lunar surface would cost $325,067 a month.
“With the Earth becoming increasingly populated and space technology advancing, it won’t be long before lunar living becomes the new normal,” reads the study. The team from Money used various factors to calculate the cost of a house on the moon: raw materials needed to build a house, the special materials needed to build on the moon’s atmosphere, astronauts required to travel to build, and the average cost of transporting materials to the moon.
According to the moon loan guide, the first fully functioning house on the moon would be $48, 454, 063, which is a high price for a home. The price includes adding life-saving details to homes such as air seals, industrial-strength air-conditioners and heaters. “Generating energy is vital when living in such extreme conditions, and therefore the cost of some supplies may force you to consider some alternative options. The most efficient way to generate electricity on the moon is to buy a small nuclear reactor costing S1. 3 million, “Money shares in the study. “Alternatively, 34 solar panels would generate enough electricity to run one house and cost only $23, 616 in comparison.”
The guide also reveals the most ideal locations on the moon, with “Sea of Rains” being considered” the perfect family suburb” — this region sits at the north and is one of the largest impact craters in the Solar System.
12.What’s the purpose of NASA sending a crew to the moon?

When I was a teenager, I knew nothing about mental health and I didn’t care about mental health. Why would I? Like my dad always used to say, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it!”
But, unfortunately my mental health did “break”. Aged 17 I developed anorexia(神经厌食症). I didn’t realise at the time. When I was 23, I was found severely clinically anorexic. I had fast-tracked treatment at The Maudsley Hospital and went through 2.5 years of treatment. People are always interested to know what helped me recover. Actually, it was simple: comedy.
I’m a professional talk show actor. Comedy, for me, began as a hobby and has unbelievably progressed into a job. One of the things that initially held my attention about talk show is how it plays with pain. Humour became a way of understanding things, then a way of explaining them. Now it’s become a way of helping other people.
The combination of being told to speak out about mental health and writing comedies to play jokes on myself, actually turned into the best type of treatment I could ever have had. Nothing has ever really helped normalise a thought or feeling quite like a joke that makes people openly say, “Me too!”
That’s why I’ve come up with a six-week comedy course aimed at people with mental health difficulties. It builds lasting friendships, fights against loneliness and normalises conversations around mental health; when audiences are laughing, they have to be listening, and when they’re listening, they can learn. This unique opportunity enables comedy to reach people in a completely different way to all the sob stories, shocking statistics and dry documentaries (纪录片) about mental illness, inspiring with positivity rather than turning to negativity.
Talk show was a must to my recovery. So, I want to pay that forward and show other people that your mental health doesn’t have to be “broke” before you can “fix it”.
24.Why is “anorexia” experience mentioned in the passage?
A.To provide exact examples about mental health.
B.To introduce a kind of treatment for mental health.
C.To stress the importance of caring about mental health.
D.To make a comparison between these two times of feelings.
25.Why does comedy attract the author most at the very beginning?
A.It helps others. B.It spreads humour.
C.It deals with pain. D.It serves as a hobby.
26.What can we learn from the story?
A.The author is an active and ambitious person.
B.Comedy plays an important part in people’s life.
C.The author will pass on comedy to help others.
D.A six-week course is open to help the disabled.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.My Life Is Full of Talk Show
B.Mental Health Should Be Fixed Earlier
C.Humorous Lifestyle — a Key to Curing Ourselves
D.Talk Show — an Efficient Way to Fix Mental Health
Imagine you’re moving to a new country on the other side of the world. Besides the geographical and cultural changes, you will find a key difference will be the language. But will your pets notice the difference? It was a question that nagged at Laura Cuaya,a brain researcher at the Neuroethology of Communication Lab at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
Cuaya set out to find the answer. She and her colleagues designed an experiment with 18 volunteer dogs—including her two Border Collies, Kun Kun and Odin—to see if they could differentiate(区分) between two languages. Kun Kun and Odín were used to hearing Spanish;the other dogs Hungarian. The dogs sat still within an MRI machine, while listening to an adaptation from the story The Little Prince. They heard one version in Spanish, and another in Hungarian.
Then the scientists analyzed the dogs’ brain activity and they found a different activity pattern for one language versus(与……相比)the other. Andics, who leads the lab where the study took place, said, “The finding suggests that dogs’ brain can differentiate between these two languages. In terms of brain imaging studies, this study is the very first one which showed that a non-human species brain can discriminate between languages. ” They also found that older dogs brains’ showed bigger differences in brain activity between the two languages, perhaps because older dogs have more experience listening to human language.
Amritha Mallikarjun, who wasn’t involved in this study but has been working on similar research about dogs and language, said, “It is a very exciting study because it shows that the ability to grasp the sounds and rhythms of a familiar language is something accessible to non-humans.”“And while this work relied on brain imaging,” Mallikarjun said, “it would be worth investigating whether dogs could differentiate between languages in behavioural studies, too.”
28.What does the underlined phrase “nagged at” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A.Astonished. B.Troubled. C.Benefited. D.Dominated.
29.Cuaya’s study focused on whether dogs can
A.tell different languages apart B.adapt to a new environment
C.understand the Little Prince D.make sense of Spanish and Hungarian
30.What do we know about the study?
A.Researchers tested the dogs in random order.
B.It is a breakthrough on non-human brain imaging.
C.Diverse methods were adopted during the study.
D.The dogs must keep moving during the study.
31.What can we infer from what Amritha Mallikarjun said?
A.Previous work has met many kinds of limitations.

C.Non-humans are less likely to understand a familiar language.
D.Behavioural studies on dogs will be a new research in the future.
A group of researchers has developed a new material which is as soft as cotton but as strong as Kevlar and as conductive(导电的) as many metals. It can be worn and washed like normal clothing and could eventually turn athletic clothes into smart “wearables”.
The so-called “carbon nanotube(纳米管)threads” work similarly to the wires in an EKG(心电图)monitoring device, which measures heart rhythms to detect heart conditions. But instead of having to be patched(贴上) onto the skin, they can be sewn into a T-shirt and worn like normal athletic clothes, according to a new study from researches at a Rice University Brown School of Engineering lab. And unlike wires, they say the threads can comfortably move with the wearer, and be washed, stretched and worn repeatedly without breaking down.
The Rice University lab first developed carbon nanotube fiber in 2013, and has studied its use in medical operations, such as in cochlear implants(人工耳蜗)for hearing loss and to repair damaged hearts. But at the time, the original filaments(细丝)were too thin to be used by a standard sewing machine.
For this latest one, researchers worked with a rope-maker to weave the filaments together into a material similar to regular sewing thread that could be sewn into athletic clothes. The resulting “ smart” shirt provides “soft, wearable, dry sensors for continuous” EKG monitoring, the study states.
Though likely a long way off from going into production for consumers, the material could eventually help replace heavy EKG monitors in medical settings and heart rate monitoring watches. With some changes, clothes with these fibers could eventually be able to track other vital signs, according to the researchers.
“You just don’t find soft, flexible, thread-like materials that are comfortable to the touch, that you can work with, that you can build a bridge out of it or you can build a powerline out of it, but you can also run it through a sewing machine,” said Oliver Dewy, a member of the research team. “Nothing else behaves like this. ”
32.What’s the feature of the new material?
A.It can conduct electricity easily. B.It’s flexible but not comfortable.
C.It’s soft but not strong enough. D.It’s very easy to be worn out.
33.What was the carbon nanotube fiber used for initially?
A.Measuring heart rhythms. B.Being sewn into athletic clothes.
C.Helping patients with hearing loss. D.Improving athletic ability of athletes.
34.What’s Oliver Dewy’s attitude to this new material?
A.Favourable. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Critical.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The future of sports clothes. B.Portable accurate EKG monitoring device.
C.The study of carbon nanotube fiber. D.A new material measuring heart rate.

Two 18-year-old girls, Jrasnatt and Marisa, learned about a major challenge faced by the cricket (蟋蟀) farmers. Bigger crickets often attack the smaller ones. When attacked, a cricket will cut off its own legs to escape. But after abandoning a leg, this animal will often die or becomes less valuable to buyers.
Jrasnatt and Marisa were determined to solve the problem. After some research, they learned that colored light can influence the behaviors of some animals, including insects. To find out, the teen researchers transferred groups of 30 newly hatched crickets into each of 24 boxes. The crickets in six boxes were exposed only to red light. Another six boxes were lit with green. Six more boxes were lit with blue. These three groups of insects spent daytime hours throughout their lives — about two months — in a world bathed in just one color of light. The last six boxes of crickets lived in natural light.
“We see they’re growing every day and take notes on what’s happening,” says Marisa. “We’re like the parents of the crickets.” Throughout, the teens kept track of the crickets. The share of crickets with missing legs was about 9 in every 10 among those living in red, blue or natural light. But fewer than 7 in every 10 crickets who grew up in a world of green lost legs. Also, the survival rate for crickets in the green box was four or five times higher than that in the other boxes.
Crickets’ eyes are adapted to only see in green and blue light. So, in red light, the world would always look dark. Without being able to see, they are more likely to hit each other. That results in crickets losing legs. Besides, crickets are more attracted to blue light than green light, which pulls them closer together and leads to more fights. In the green light box, the crickets were most likely to mind their own business and avoid struggle.
Creating a green-light world for crickets is a solution that could be brought to the farms. Jrasnatt and Marisa are already in talks with the farmers. Those farmers plan to try out green lighting to see if it will boost their profits.

Kobe Bryant is no doubt a legend. How did he do it? Simply put his work principle. He showed up to training every day, no excuses. Without a doubt, it is quite evident that Kobe’s desire for success was directly correlated with his work principle.
Kobe Bryant’s work principle is what helped him become the legend he is today. But what also must be understood about Kobe Bryant is that he was relentless (不停的;严格的). He had a mental toughness and steely focus that was driven by his over-the-top competitiveness.
In short, Kobe wanted to be the best, and would do whatever it took to achieve this mental goal. If he had a weakness in one area, he would commit to mastering that weakness. If there was a lack of strength in his shot, he would get to work exhausting all options to correct that lack of strength, researching and then applying the routines that instructed him on how to get stronger. Similarly, if his weakness was a lack of speed, he would put in the time and effort to overcome the limitation. And there lies his secret to success. The willingness to learn and then apply what he learned to move himself closer to his goals.
“When I am retired, I don’t want to have to say I wish I would have done more. I don’t want that.”— Kobe Bryant.
As such, Kobe Bryant’s success principle can be summarized as a relentless focus on the end result. The great news is the ability to be relentless is in all of you.
28.According to the author, what makes Kobe Bryant a legend?
A.Kobe Bryant’s distinguished characters.
B.Kobe Bryant’s attitudes towards his work.

D.Kobe Bryant’s willingness to learn new things.
29.What does the underlined word “over-the-top” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Potential. B.Temporary. C.Apparent. D.Extraordinary.
30.What does the author want to show best by telling the story of Kobe Bryant?
A.A slow sparrow should make an early start.
B.All things are difficult before they are easy.

D.Confidence is the first step on the road to success.
31.Which of the following best describes Kobe Bryant?
A.Self-disciplined and hard-working. B.Confident and humble.
C.Positive and considerate. D.Selfless and energetic.
For a few seconds on a sunny afternoon last April, renewables broke a record for California’s main electric network, providing enough power to supply 94.5% of demand. The moment was praised as a milestone on the path to decarbonisation(脱碳).But what happens when the sunsets and the winds stop?
Handling the varied power production of renewables will require cheap storage for hours or even days at a time. New types of iron-based batteries might be up to the task.
Many firms are engaged in developing these kinds of batteries. Oregon- based ESS,whose batteries can store energy for between four and twelve hours, launched its first network-scale projects in 2021.Massachusetts-based Form Energy, which raised $ 240 million in 2021,has batteries that store power for up to 100 hours. Its first installation will be a one-megawatt(兆瓦)pilot plant in Minnesota, planned to be completed in 2023.
Both companies rely on batteries that use iron, one of the most abundant materials on the planet. This means that their offerings could eventually be cheaper than other network storage candidates. Form says its batteries could eventually cost just $ 20 per kilowatt-hour,lower than even optimistic predictions for lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries in the next several decades.
There are still challenges to address:iron batteries typically have low efficiency, meaning a good part of the energy that’s put into them can’t be recovered. Unwanted side reactions can also degrade them over time. But if iron-based batteries can be applied widely,at a low enough cost, they could help power more of the world with renewable energy.
32.What is the author’s purpose of raising a question in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the article. B.To support the topic of this paragraph.
C.To highlight the importance of energy. D.To inspire more scientists to study.

Much of our health depends on what we eat. We all know about the benefits of eating properly for our physical health, but food - and cooking it - is proving to be good for our mental health as well.
Some people are now advocating the healthful value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through. Dr Mark Salter, a consultant psychiatrist, told the BBC, “Baking and cooking are good ways to help patients develop planning skills, short-term memory and social skills - all of which suffer in mental illness.” TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain also agrees that cooking is great for improving our mind. She says, “Baking is always about healing... It’s never really been only about getting a cake.” And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialization and mental health.
Certainly, creating some delicious food has helped some of us get through the recent lockdown. It has given us something to do and helped take our mind off annoying things. People say that kneading dough (揉面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier. Nicole Farmer, who studies how food impacts our biology, behaviour and mental health, says, “cooking represents the shared human experience of food, and nurturing people through food, so I think that’s an opportunity for immediate positive emotions, which benefit our mental health.”
Of course, cooking can be a very sociable activity and a rewarding experience. Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right frame of mind.
4 What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To add extra relevant materials.
B. To summarize the whole passage.
C. To set an example of healthy eating.

A. Baking is the best way to develop planning skills.
B. People who suffer mental illness benefit less in cooking.
C What you cook matters more than the process of how you cook it.
D. Cooking with friends or family can relax our mind.

Growing at high speed and absorbing huge amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, could seaweeds be the key to fighting climate change? Scientists in Australia think so. In Australia, scientists are taking advantage of the power of seaweeds to absorb CO2 at a rate that equals to the Amazon rainforest!
Kelp (巨藻) is one of the most common seaweeds. It has many types and grows at great speed. Giant kelp, for example, can grow up to 50 cm per day. Seaweeds use photosynthesis (光合作用) to absorb CO2, and grow biomass. Seaweeds are thought to absorb nearly 200 million tonnes of our globe’s CO2 per year.
Pia Winberg, founder of Australia’s first land-based commercial seaweed farm, suggests that growing more seaweeds could be an essential tool in the fight against climate change. “If we used the infrastructure we have in the ocean and created seaweed islands, we would actually remove many climate change issues we have today,” she said.
The Great Southern Reef is an 8,000-km network of reefs in Australia. Golden kelp forms the backbone of the network. With many other species, including giant kelp and bull kelp, growing there, it is a good place for series of relevant projects. The Great Southern Reef project managed by an independent team of seience professionals is working to promote the recognition and management of Australia’s kelp forests. The project estimates that if these kelp forests were cultivated in just 0.001% of the ocean’s surface, the amounts of the CO2: they absorb could offset (抵消) the carbon emissions of the global aquaculture (水产养殖) industry.
Of seaweeds’ potential, there’s a long chain of wins with this.
12. What is the scientists’ attitude towards growing seaweeds to absorb CO2?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Positive. D. Negative.
13. What can we learn about Giant kelp?
A. It can grow 50 cm per day at most.
B. It is unique to the Great Southern Reef.
C. It is cultivated in commercial seaweed farm.
D. It absorbs nearly 200 million tonnes of CO: every year.
14. Why is the Great Southern Reef suitable for ocean forest project?
A. It is managed by an independent team of science professionals.
B. It has the largest network of reefs in Australia.
C. It is home to many species of seaweeds.
D. It works to protect Australia’s kelp forests.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Different species of seaweed absorb CO2 in different ways.
B. Bull kelp forms the backbone of the reefs network in Australia.
C. The Great Southern Reef absorbs as much CO2 as the Amazon rainforest.
D. Seaweed forests could be the key to fighting climate change.
