Identify the best charities
There are so many ways to support the creatures that share this planet with us, and one of the simplest ways is to donate to charities.
We have done a roundup of some top organizations. These charities are committed to the only purpose of making our natural world a better place, and to supporting the animals that live within it.
Defenders of Wildlife
Defenders of Wildlife works tirelessly both on the ground and in the courts to protect and restore wildlife. Their work primarily focuses on North America, although it does have a fantastic worldwide reach. They work at a policy level to ensure that endangered animals are protected, but also offer practical advice to people who have to live alongside bears!
Jane Goodall Foundation
In 1960, Jane Goodall ventured into the forests of Africa to be able to see wild animals living without human disturbance. This decision led to the foundation of the Jane Goodall Foundation, and paved the way for some of the most illuminating research into chimpanzees which are at risk of extinction. The research continues to this day, focusing on the state of the forest and the chimpanzee populations which is shared with governments and other protection agencies.
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the most successful orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation projects in the world. Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick started the organization in 1977 in memory of her late husband the famous naturalist David Sheldrick. The organization focuses on anti-poaching and endangered species conservation, as well as rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans.
World Wildlife Fund
The WWF is probably the best known of all the organizations. Its mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to biodiversity. The scope of their work is huge, covering oceans, forests, wildlife, fresh water, climate and food. They support some of the most endangered animals today – giant pandas, tigers, elephants, gorillas, sea turtles, polar bears, rhinos and whales.

One sunny morning, my wife and I piled the kids into the car with a hope that my memory was reliable. We went out looking for my trees.
About 25 years ago, I started working as a tree planter in Northern Ontario. I would have planted several thousand a day, every day, for weeks and weeks. I worked every summer for six years, which added up to over 500,000 trees. While we were planting, we talked about what our trees would be like when they grew taller. The small trees were no longer than my thumb. It seemed unlikely that our trees would last more than a day or two.
Eventually, I stopped the car and stared at the clear blue sky and treetops softly waving. I walked toward them.
They were so tall and solid, much bigger than I thought they would be. There were so many of them, waving soundlessly in the wind like they were welcoming me. Row upon row of fully grown, healthy pines left me speechless. They spoke of that time of my life, in 1995, when I was strong and young in my mid-20s.
I walked among them, listening to the sound of the wind in their high branches. Humbled and moved, I never had such a strong sense of my impact on the world.
I felt a quiet presence and at home among my trees, as if they had been waiting for me. What was unclear and unlikely had grown specific and very real. What I had held in my hands had grown into a towering forest surrounding me.
My kids ran to join me.
“You planted all these?” asked my 10-year-old son, Forest.
“I planted more than this every day. And this is where your name comes from,” I told him.
Together, with my 6-year-old son River, we walked deeper into the woods and spotted a clearing. We emerged suddenly into the open space and I felt even more at home than in the forest I’d planted. It was more familiar, this open space where I had once spent thousands and thousands of hours.
4. What do we know about the author when he was in his mid-20s?
A. He volunteered to plant trees in Northern Ontario.
B. He planted several thousand trees every day for six years.
C. Most of the trees he planted didn’t survive a week.
D. He planted over 500,000 trees within six years.
5. How did the author feel at the sight of the trees he had planted?
A. Fulfilled. B. Worried. C. Confused. D. Disappointed.
6. What does the underlined word “clearing” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. a fallen tree B. an empty place
C. a cutting tool D. a clean cottage
7. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Memory of planting trees. B. Planting trees with families.
C. A reunion with my trees. D. Making for a greener future
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

Across the fashion industry, many top designers have faced accusations of cultural appropriation (挪用).
Designer Jane Kellock, who has worked with brands such as Topshop, said she doesn’t believe designers deliberately go out to rip off (剽窃) cultures. “Design is a mish-mash (大杂烩) of different styles, cultures, ideas — and that’s what makes it interesting,” she said. “I really, genuinely don’t think that designers look at other cultures and think ‘I’m just going to copy that and I’m going to rip off that culture’.”
Dr Serkan Delice, a lecturer in cultural and historical studies at the London College of Fashion, is currently researching the debate over fashion and cultural appropriation. He said that fashion designers are often accused of cultural appropriation because of the speed at which the industry moves. “In most cases, unfortunately, designers don’t even have time to undertake proper research and appreciate a culture.”
One question that often comes up when the chat around cultural appropriation happens is: “What about people of color wearing clothes designed by white people?”
In 2016, designer Marc Jacobs appeared to defend his decision to style white models in dreadlocks (细发辫). Responding to the criticism, a comment from his official account said: “Funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair.”
Dr Delice said cultural appropriation only “happens when there are power inequalities between different cultures”. “We are still living in a world where white people and institutions are much more powerful than black and brown people and their institutions. So it wouldn’t be cultural appropriation because cultural appropriation implies that a more powerful culture is using another less powerful culture.”
So what should designers do? Dr Delice believes that designers should make sure people from different cultures take part in producing the clothes that are inspired by them. “That’s the only solution. In other words, if you’re doing a runway show (时装秀), then you need to use the original inhabitants of that region, or in the production process.”
8. What does Jane Kellock think makes design interesting?
A. The cultures it reflects. B. Its impact on culture.
C. The mixture of various elements. D. Its focus on cultural exchange.
9. Why do fashion designers often face accusations of cultural appropriation according to Serkan Delice?
A. They deliberately copy different cultures.
B. They show little respect for certain cultures.
C. They lay emphasis on powerful cultures.
D. They don’t have time to fully appreciate other cultures.
10. Designer Marc Jacobs is mentioned in the text to prove that ________.
A. cultural appropriation shouldn’t be criticized
B. the powerful cultures are more valued by designers
C. using elements from other cultures isn’t cultural appropriation
D. cultural appropriation occurs when inequality exists between cultures
11. What does Dr Delice think designers should do?
A. Get inspiration from different cultures.
B. Get the source of their inspirations involved in the production process.
C. Organize more runway shows with local elements.
D. Learn about the origins of cultures from local residents.
C 9. D 10. D 11. B
根据第二段的“Design is a mish-mash (大杂烩) of different styles, cultures, ideas — and that’s what makes it interesting(设计是不同风格、文化和想法的混合体——这就是它有趣的地方)”可知,Jane Kellock认为是各种元素的混合让设计变得有趣。
根据第三段的“In most cases, unfortunately, designers don’t even have time to undertake proper research and appreciate a culture.(不幸的是,在大多数情况下,设计师甚至没有时间进行适当的研究,欣赏一种文化。)”
根据倒数第二段的“Dr Delice said cultural appropriation only “happens when there are power inequalities between different cultures”.(德莱斯博士说,文化挪用只会“在不同文化之间存在权力不平等时发生”。)”
根据最后一段的“Dr Delice believes that designers should make sure people from different cultures take part in producing the clothes that are inspired by them.(德莱斯博士认为,设计师应该确保来自不同文化背景的人参与到服装的制作中来,并从中获得灵感。)”

The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it’s not “social” distance we are trying to promote. It’s physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.
Given this fact, how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Setting up a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection — and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.
In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that they’d feel more connected when interacting via the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’d rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating.
In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.
The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.
12. How does the author support his view on the importance of maintaining social ties?
A. By stating a deep-rooted tradition. B. By citing a published report.
C. By sharing public opinions. D. By presenting official documents.
13. What did the author and Epley’s study focus on?
A. How technologies impact means of communication.
B. How social media choices affect feelings of connection.
C. Why maintaining social separation is bad for mental health.
D. Why reconnecting with friends over the phone brings awkwardness.
14. What can we infer from the study results?
A. They changed the research objectives. B. They provided insights for future studies.
C. They confirmed researchers’ expectations. D. They contradicted participants’ predictions partly.
15. What can be concluded from the text?
A. For stronger bonds, talk instead of typing.
B. Keeping in touch is key to a lasting friendship.
C. Think before you consider contacting an old friend.
D. Text-based methods for communication cause discomfort.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第一段中“In fact, preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.(事实上,保持社会联系——即使是远距离联系——对身心健康都至关重要。2017年进行的一项分析审查的结果表明,缺乏社会支持与吸烟一样是健康的风险因素)”可知,作者通过引用一份发表的报告支持他关于保持社会联系重要性的观点。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection — and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.(在我们研究中,Nick Epley和我测试了人们互动的媒体是否会影响他们的联系感,以及对某些技术的期望如何影响他们选择使用的交流媒体)”可知,作者和Epley的研究重点是技术如何影响交流手段。故选A。
根据第三段中“But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail.(但他们也预测,打电话可能比发电子邮件更让人不舒服)”以及倒数第二段中“We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.(我们发现,人们通过电话交流比通过电子邮件交流更能形成有意义的纽带。然而,重要的是,当用手机重新联系时,他们的不适程度没有区别)”可推知,研究结果与参与者的预测部分矛盾。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.(下次当你考虑如何最好地联系时,考虑打电话或建立视频聊天。社交联系的感觉最好是通过声音而不是键盘来促进的)”可推知,要想加强联系,用交谈代替打字。故选A。

Clean Driving Record: What It Is and How It Benefits You
What is a clean driving record?
A clean driving record is one of those unclear phrases people throw around — like good credit or stable employment history. We know we’re supposed to have these things. ____16____ Technically, a driving record is clean when it has no moving violations or accidents in recent history — usually three to five years. If you haven’t gotten a ticket, been arrested while driving, or been in a reported accident, your driving record should be clean.
That’s the black-and-white interpretation, but the real-world answer is less clear. In certain situations, a driving record can have minor traffic violations and still be considered “clean”. ____17____ Uber, for example, defines a clean record as one without DUIs (driving under the influence) or reckless driving (鲁莽驾驶) charges, and with no more than three moving violations in the last three years. Car insurance providers have the strictest view, and normally raise your rates after a single violation. Note that parking tickets don’t impact your driving record.
Three benefits of a clean driving record.
● Lower premiums (保险费)
Even just one violation on your driving record can raise your premiums. ____18____ A more severe charge, like drunk driving, will lead to insurance cancellation or a massive increase in premiums.
● Less wear and tear on your car
Follow safe, legal driving practices and you’re less likely to damage your car. ____19____
● More job opportunities
A clean driving record is a standard requirement for any job that involves driving, including bus drivers, delivery drivers, truckers, ambulance drivers, etc. ____20____ They’ll expect to see a driving record that has no negative marks in recent history.
A. What “clean” means may surprise you.
B. That means less money spent on repairs.
C. However, we’re not sure what they mean exactly.
D. Most of these jobs will be rigid on their requirements.
E. It all depends on who is looking into your driving history.
F. Many drivers struggle to keep their driving records free from violations.
G. Experienced drivers can see their premiums go up 10% after a minor speeding ticket.
C 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. D

上文“A clean driving record is one of those unclear phrases people throw around—like good credit or stable employment history. We know we’re supposed to have these things.(清白的驾驶记录是人们到处使用的含糊不清的词汇之一,比如良好的信用或稳定的就业记录。我们知道我们应该有这些东西。)”提出清白的驾驶记录是人们到处使用的含糊不清的词汇之一,我们知道我们应该有这些记录,下文“Technically, a driving record is clean when it has no moving violations or accidents in recent history — usually three to five years.(从技术上讲,如果近年来(通常是3至5年)没有违规或事故发生,那么驾驶记录就是清白的。)”
上文“In certain situations, a driving record can have minor traffic violations and still be considered “clean.” (在某些情况下,一个驾驶记录可以有轻微的交通违规,仍然被认为是“清白的”)”指出某些情况下,即使有轻微的交通违规,也仍然被认为是“清白的”,下文“Uber, for example, defines a clean record as one without DUIs (driving under the influence) or reckless driving (鲁莽驾驶) charges, and with no more than three moving violations in the last three years. Car insurance providers have the strictest view, and normally raise your rates after a single violation.
上文“Even just one violation on your driving record can raise your premiums.(你的驾驶记录哪怕只有一次违规,都会增加你的保险费。)”指出只要有一次违规,就会增加保险费,空处应该是具体解释上文,G项“Experienced drivers can see their premiums go up 10% after a minor speeding ticket.(在被开一个轻微的超速罚单后,经验丰富的司机可以看到他们的保险费上涨10%后。)”符合,举例说明了只要有一次违规,就会增加保险费,同时和下文“A more severe charge, like drunk driving, will lead to insurance cancellation or a massive increase in premiums.(更严重的指控,比如酒后驾车,会导致保险被取消或保费大幅上涨。)”
上文“Follow safe, legal driving practices and you’re less likely to damage your car.(遵循安全合法的驾驶操作,你就不会损坏你的车。)”
上文“A clean driving record is a standard requirement for any job that involves driving, including bus drivers, delivery drivers, truckers, ambulance drivers, etc.(任何涉及驾驶的工作,包括巴士司机、送货司机、卡车司机、救护车司机等,都必须有清白的驾驶记录。)”指出任何涉及驾驶的工作都需要有清白的驾驶记录,下文“They’ll expect to see a driving record that has no negative marks in recent history.(它们希望看到近年来没有负面记录的驾驶记录。)” 符合,Most of these jobs呼应下文的They,故选D。
