The over 48,000 orange trees in Seville, Spain, not only fill the city’s air with the pleasant smell of orange blossoms in spring, but they also produce over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that makes the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region Europe’s top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some of the produce is used to make orange jam and an alcoholic drink, most of it ends up in Seville’s landfills (填埋场). However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The trial program is being launched by the city’s council and park department in cooperation with Emasesa, Seville’s water supply and sanitation (卫生) division. Juice from 38. 6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵) in a specialized facility. The methane (甲烷) released from the fermented liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will produce about 1,500 kWh of energy—enough to run one of Emasesa’s water purification plants. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, peels, and flesh will be used as fertilizer.
“It’s not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we’re producing added value from waste,” said Benigno Lopez, head of Emasesa’s environmental department.
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity produced back into its power transmission network. In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
“This project will help us to reach our targets for reducing emissions, energy self-sufficiency, and the circular economy,” Juan Espadas Cejas, mayor of Seville, said in the press conference announcing the trial scheme.
    4. What do we know about oranges in Seville from the first paragraph?
    A. They are usually picked in spring.
    B. They are mostly used to make jams and juice.
    C. They are not recommended to be eaten fresh.
    D. They make Seville the world’s top orange-producing city.
    5. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. Different uses of oranges.
    B. How to produce power from juice.
    C. An introduction to the trial program.
    D. Why the trial program was put forward.
    6. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Seville hasn’t carried out the trial program yet.
    B. The electricity produced will be used to purify water.
    C. The electricity produced will go to Seville’s power plants.
    D. Seville may need to recycle 14,600 tons of oranges to power 73,000 homes.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Seville Is Turning Waste into Wealth
    B. Seville Is Seeking Market for Oranges
    C. Seville Is Contributing to Global Warming
    D. Seville Is Dealing with the Electricity Shortage
C 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“Though that makes the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region Europe’s top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh.(虽然这使得西班牙南部安达卢西亚地区的首都成为欧洲最大的橙子生产城市,但这种水果太酸了,不能新鲜食用)”可知,塞维利亚的橙子太酸了,不建议新鲜食用。
根据第二段“Juice from 38. 6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵) in a specialized facility. (果汁将在专门的设施中从38.6吨橙子里发酵。从发酵液中释放的甲烷将被捕获,用于驱动发电机产生清洁能源。官员们估计,试运行将产生大约1500千瓦时的能量,足以运行埃马萨萨的一家净水工厂。为了确保没有浪费,橘子皮、果皮和果肉将被用作肥料)”可知,本段主要是介绍了这一试验方案。故选C。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences. (在试运行中,一吨橙子产生50千瓦时的清洁能源——足以满足五户家庭的日常用电需求。该项目团队估计,如果所有的水果都被回收利用,它将产生足够为多达7.3万户家庭供电的能源)”可知,一吨橙子产生的清洁能源足够为五个家庭提供电能。那么73,000个家庭则需要14,600吨橙子。故选D。
    【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy. (然而,这种情况可能很快就会改变,因为有一个聪明的想法,用橙子生产清洁能源)”及全文可知,文章主要介绍西班牙城市塞维利亚的冬季是橙色的季节,但是当地近16,500吨的橙子大部分都被作为垃圾掩埋。然而,这一现象即将改变,这些无用的橙子将被用来生产清洁能源。所以“Seville Is Turning Waste into Wealth(塞维利亚正在把浪费变成财富)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。
    C
Cimabue, the greatest painter of a Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on. He swatted (重拍) at the fly, but it did not move. He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice (学徒), Giotto, was laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village. Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto’s story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue’s instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn’t look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it. Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way. His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes (壁画) for the Arena Chapel. Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then, he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting, Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties, he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art. He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.
    8. What does the anecdote in paragraph 1 tell us about Giotto?
    A. His humor. B. His talent. C. His courage. D. His determination.
    9. How did Cimabue feel about Giotto’s painting when they first met?
    A. Impressed. B. Hesitant. C. Doubtful. D. Amused.
    10. What made Giotto’s works distinguished at that time?
    A. Vivid colors. B. Classic skills.
    C. Original composition. D. Lifelike quality.
    11. Which of the following best summarizes Giotto’s story?
    A. Great minds think alike.
    B. Innovation is the vitality of art.
    C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
    D. A slow sparrow should make an early start.
B 9. A 10. D 11. B
根据第一段内容,尤其是最后一句“Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.(Giotto趁Cimabue不在时画了这只苍蝇,它看起来如此真实,Cimabue完全被骗了。)”
根据第二段中“Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint.(传说有一天,Cimabue在乡间游荡时,发现一个牧童正在给他的羊画画,画得非常生动,Cimabue立即邀请他来佛罗伦萨学习画画。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中“However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way.(然而,Giotto认为艺术应该用一种更现实的方式更贴近人。)”及“he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted(他画的是他所看到的人物,而不是其他画家画的那些身材过高、四四方方的人)”可知,Giotto的画因逼真的特点而与众不同。
根据第三段中“Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.(没有强调创新,所以几百年来艺术一直保持不变。)”可知,当时的艺术因没有创新而止步不前,结合第四段中“Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then(采用了许多当时不常见的技术)”及最后一段中“The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.(Giotto一生给绘画带来的思想彻底改变了艺术界,使他成为有史以来最伟大的画家之一。)”
    D
Even when communing with nature we depend on technology for help — but then, so did Thoreau (梭罗) at Walden Pond (瓦尔登湖).
Walking in the same woods yesterday, I let myself wander at random, communing with nature.
I took in beautiful scenery near and far thanks to my progressive-lens eyeglasses. Occasionally I’d pull out my smartphone to take pictures on anything interesting. I recorded an inner monologue with a background of all sounds of the forest. At times, I consulted my smart watch to check on my heartbeat, mileage and calorie burn. Eventually I realized I was quite lost. Not a problem of course. Online maps came to my rescue.
But something bothered me. In what I’d intended as a nature experience, here I was using very high technology to help myself out. This insight triggered a reconsideration of everything that happened during my “nature walk,” which had been technologically enhanced every step of the way. I’d been functioning as a man-machine combination: a cyborg.
What would the true naturalist Thoreau think of that? My first thought was that he’d be shocked. But later I did some research. Thoreau enjoyed what his spyglass discovered, like this eagle from his journal:
Lying on the ground with my glass, I could watch him very easily … till I almost lost him in the clouds … I think I have got the worth of my glass now that it has revealed to me the white-headed eagle.
Famously, Thoreau always set out equipped with a walking stick, which he used not only for support but also to take measurements of water and snow levels. His hat was also a tool, which he called his “botany-box.” And he was prepared even with needles and thread, so when coming out of the woods, he was “the best dressed.” Clearly, Thoreau was a bit of a cyborg himself.
Thinking more deeply, I realized we’ve come a long way from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who walked from necessity and relied on nature’s gift. Cyborgs are us.
    12. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To recommend Thoreau’s book Walden Pond.
    B. To argue that humans have developed into cyborgs.
    C. To share the reflections on man’s reliance on nature.
    D. To question whether people are technology-dependent.
    13. Which picture best illustrates a cyborg in the author’s eye?
    A. B.
    C. D.
    14. Why does the author quote Thoreau’s journal?
    A. To introduce a literary work on nature.
    B. To explain how to prepare for a nature walk.
    C. To prove that even naturalists use technology.
    D. To describe the natural beauty Thoreau enjoyed.
    15. What is the author’s attitude towards being a cyborg?
    A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
B 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据文章第一段“Even when communing with nature we depend on technology for help — but then, so did Thoreau (梭罗) at Walden Pond (瓦尔登湖).(即使在与自然交流时,我们也依赖技术来帮助——但是,沃尔登湖的梭罗也是如此)”可知,我们都是依赖技术的,自然学家梭罗也是如此;再根据文章最后一段“Thinking more deeply, I realized we’ve come a long way from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who walked from necessity and relied on nature’s gift. Cyborgs are us.(更深入地思考,我意识到我们已经从狩猎采集的祖先那里走了很长一段路,他们从需要出发,依靠大自然的恩赐。半机械人就是我们)”可推知,本文的目的是为了说明人类已经进化为半机械人。故选B项。
    【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“This insight triggered a reconsideration of everything that happened during my “nature walk”,which had been technologically enhanced every step of the way. I’d been functioning as a man-machine combination: a cyborg.(这一见解引发了我对“自然漫步”中发生的一切的重新思考,“自然漫步”的每一步都得到了技术的强化。 我一直扮演着人机结合的角色:一个半机械人)”可知,作者眼中的半机械人应该是人机结合,选项C的图片中即有人又有机器,符合题意。故选C项。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“But later I did some research. Thoreau enjoyed what his spyglass discovered, like this eagle from his journal(但后来我做了一些研究。梭罗喜欢望远镜的发现,就像日记里的这只鹰)”和第六段“I think I have got the worth of my glass now that it has revealed to me the white-headed eagle.(我想我已经得到了我的望远镜的价值,因为它让我看到了白头鹰)”可知,自然学家梭罗是肯定了望远镜的作用,所以作者引用梭罗的日记是为了证明即使是自然学家也会使用科技。故选C项。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Thinking more deeply, I realized we’ve come a long way from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who walked from necessity and relied on nature’s gift. Cyborgs are us.(更深入地思考,我意识到我们已经从狩猎采集的祖先那里走了很长一段路,他们从需要出发,依靠大自然的恩赐。半机械人就是我们)”可知,作者对半机械化人的态度是赞成的。故选A项。
Video calls are a common occurrence, but have you imagined being able to touch the person on the other end of the line? Scientists are making this a reality.
Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have invented a soft skin stretch device (SSD), a haptic device that can recreate the sense of touch._____16_____. It is similar to what is felt in the real world, through force, vibration or motion.
Vibration is the most common haptic technology today and has been built into many electronic devices. _____17_____. The existing technology also has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or located remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study.
_____18_____. The research team introduced a novel method to recreate the sense of touch through soft, artificial “muscles”. It works like this: Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs and your friend also wears a glove with integrated 3D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s fingers. _____19_____ The force signals can be sent to your glove so your device will generate the same 3D forces, making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend.
The haptic devices could allow users to feel objects inside a virtual world or at a distance. This could be especially beneficial during such times like the COVID-19 pandemic when people rely on video calls to stay connected with loved ones. _____20_____. Doctors can feel a patient’s organ tissues with surgical tools without touching them.
    A. The new technology overcomes issues with existing haptic devices
    B. Haptic technology mimics the experience of touch by stimulating localized areas of the skin
    C. However, haptic feedback with vibration becomes less sensitive when used continuously
    D. And their glove with 3D force sensors will measure these interactions
    E. Or it could be used in medical practices
    F. The haptic glove with the SSDs can receive sensors from your friends
    G. When emergency happens, people can even keep contact with friends and family members
B 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. E

根据上文“Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have invented a soft skin stretch device (SSD), a haptic device that can recreate the sense of touch.(澳大利亚新南威尔士大学的研究人员发明了一种柔软的皮肤拉伸设备,这是一种可以重建触觉的触觉设备)”以及后文“It is similar to what is felt in the real world, through force, vibration or motion.(它类似于通过力、振动或运动在现实世界中感受到的感觉)”可知,本句承接上文解释说明触觉技术的工作原理,B选项中Haptic technology对应后文it。
根据上文“Vibration is the most common haptic technology today and has been built into many electronic devices.(振动是当今最常见的触觉技术,已经被嵌入到许多电子设备中)”以及后文“The existing technology also has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or located remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study.(该研究的主要作者Mai Thanh Thai说,现有的技术在虚拟环境或远程环境中再现物体的触感也有很大困难)”可知,后文提到了现在触觉技术的另一个缺点,推测本句与上文构成转折,指出触觉技术的缺点,后文中的also是关键词,说明空处提出了缺点之一,故C选项“然而,带振动的触觉反馈在连续使用时变得不那么敏感”符合语境,故选C。
根据后文“The research team introduced a novel method to recreate the sense of touch through soft, artificial “muscles”. It works like this: Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs and your friend also wears a glove with integrated 3D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s fingers.(该研究小组介绍了一种新方法,通过柔软的人工“肌肉”重建触觉。
根据上文“If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s fingers.(如果你的朋友拿起一个物体,它会压在你朋友的手指上)”以及后文“The force signals can be sent to your glove so your device will generate the same 3D forces, making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend.(力的信号可以发送到你的手套上,这样你的设备就会产生同样的3D力,让你和你的朋友体验到同样的触觉)”可知,上文提到物体会压在朋友的手指上,并且他们都带着3D力传感器的手套,所以手套应该能接受并测量到这种相互作用。
根据后文“Doctors can feel a patient’s organ tissues with surgical tools without touching them.(医生不用接触手术工具就能感觉到病人的器官组织)”可知,后文提到了医生,可见这种设备可以用于医疗,故E选项“或者它可以用于医疗实践”符合语境,故选E。

Molly ran back home from school and dropped her schoolbag on the sofa. Then on the table she saw “Mum’s Wish Book” —a mail order catalog from a gift shop. “Mum,” she said excitedly to herself, “this year you’ll get the gloves you want!” Molly had walked a dog for a neighbor and saved her money all year to buy Mum the gloves.
She opened “Mum’s Wish Book” and hoped that she could find these gloves in it. So carefully did she look through that tears ran down her face when she saw the gloves in the catalog. Mum wouldn’t buy them for herself, because the family had a hard time on the farm. She once heard Mum say to Dad, “Maybe some day, I’ll have the money to get them.”
Molly ran out by the back door and went straight to the post office. There she carefully filled out the order form torn from the catalog.
“I need to buy a stamp to send the form.” She said to Mr. Smith, the only worker in the post office.
“Umm, a pair of gloves?” said Mr. Smith, as he passed a stamp to her.
“Yes, It’s a Christmas gift for Mum, but please don’t tell her. It’s our secret, OK?” Molly didn’t realize how white Mr. Smith’s beard was until that moment. In fact, he reminded her of Santa Claus.
As Molly walked back home, she decided to tell Dad her secret. “You’ve got to check the mailbox every day,” said Molly quietly to Dad. He nodded, with a big smile.
Coming home from school every day, Molly peeked at Dad when Mum wasn’t looking , but every time he shook his head.
On Christmas Eve Dad came back from the mailbox, still empty handed. Molly felt sad when she went to bed, because she didn’t have the gloves for Mum.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 1:
Before Christmas dinner, Molly felt so hopeless. As Mum took the apple pies out of the oven, Molly began setting the table mind-absently. Suddenly, they heard someone pulling up the driveway. From the window they saw Mr. Smith making his way to the door, with a box in his hand. Molly was surprised to see Mr. Smith. She rushed to meet him. Mr. Smith handed Mum the box, saying “I believe this is yours.”
    Paragraph 2:
Mum thanked Mr. Smith and took the box. Then she carefully opened the box, in which there was a pair of beautiful gloves, which were on the catalog from a gift shop. Her eyes lit up when she saw the gloves. “Oh, my gloves! But who bought the gift for me?” she asked excitedly and doubtfully, looking from Dad to Molly. “Santa did,” said Molly smilingly, her eyes sparkling. “Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!” said Mr. Smith, with a loud laugh. At that moment, Mr. Smith looked just like Santa Claus. It was Christmas that no one would ever forget.
