展开Lesson 23:The Internet ---Good or Bad?
Part 1 : Design Concept
1.1 Guiding Ideology of Teaching
According to the requirements of education for all-round development(or quality education)(素质教育), the fundamental purpose of quality teaching is to develop all the students’ basic qualities. It respects students’ subjectivity(主体性)and power of initiative(主动精神). It also stresses the exploration of students’ potential intelligence. What is more important, it emphasizes the formation of healthy human characters.
As for the basic concept from “Outline of Elementary Education Curriculum Reform”《基础教育课程改革纲要》, it points out that teaching process should be a process which contains teacher-student interaction, and it should ensure that both the teacher and students develop. It emphasizes that the teacher should guide the students to raise questions, do some survey or research and learn during the practice. In short, the students are supposed to be the masters of the class, while the teacher is the director and organizer of the class.
From the above, it is easy to find that the main concept of modern teaching is that, the teacher should guide the students to experience and solve real problems happily. When they are trying to find out how to solve the problems in class, they are required to use their mind and sometimes imagination and they are also required to communicate with the teacher or other students in English. During their individual work and cooperative work, they may develop their ability to solve problems and communicative ability in English as well. Once they succeed in solving the problems, they may have greater confidence and interest in English learning.
1.2 Teaching Aims
1.2.1 Knowledge aim: words and phrases: advantage, disadvantage, simple, coin, cause, aside, attack, steal, banking, properly, be harmful to, get …done, aside from, stay in touch, take up, open up
1.2.2 Ability aim: to guide the students to understand and find out the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet; help students complete tasks individually and cooperatively;
(To evaluate whether the students have finished their tasks or not by referring to their performance in the class, whether they are willing to take part in all the classroom activities and cooperate well with others)
1.2.3 Moral aim: to help students know that they have both strong points and weak points. Once they can make full use of strong their points, and improve weak points, they are likely to get greater success;
(It’s common that there are always still some students who are not interested in English, they are likely to have more difficulty in English learning, and they may have no confidence in English learning, so I hope that they can try to develop their confidence in English by knowing that they really have strong points and they are certainly to make progress in English.)
To enjoy the happiness of solving problems
1.3 Important & Difficult Points
1.3.1 Important points: the main idea and structure of the text; the usages
of chunks
1.3.2 Difficult points: have a clear clue of the text; use chunks to express
themselves freely; to compose a short passage.
Part 2: Teaching Preparation
2.1 Choice of the teaching methods:
Since I tried my best to develop students’ creativity and communicative ability in my everyday teaching, and I hoped that the students could solve the real problems happily in English, I always choose to use the Task-based Teaching Method(任务型教学法) and Communicative Teaching Method(交际法). I searched some information on these two methods, and read some books on these two methods, such as, “Principles of Language and Teaching”《语言学习与语言教学的原则》,“Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching” 《语言教学的流派》, and “Task-based Language Teaching”《任务型语言教学》 and so on. All of them are published by Foreign Language and Research Press(外语教学与研究出版社) These books gave me a clear clue of the students’ role and my role in class, and they also helped me know how to set the tasks and activities effectively and freely.
2.2 Selection and conformation of teaching aims:
When I have chosen the methods I would like to use in class, I began to figure out the teaching aims in this class. Since I am a member of Ms. Liu’s Workshop, and we have been studying on the Lexical Approach (how to use chunks (语块) to improve junior students’ writing skill), I decided to focus on how to use chunks to develop students’ writing. However, it may take a lot of time for the students to write a passage in class, so I chose to use a debate to take place of writing, and the students were supposed to finish their writing after class, and they could write by referring to the debate.
2.3 The way to start the lesson:
“A good beginning is half done”, so I always pay a lot of attention to how to start a lesson. When I began to start the lesson, I would like to use a piece of video to show how people use the Internet in their everyday life. However, I sensed that the students might focus on the video itself instead of what I expected them to think about. Therefore, I gave up that idea. It really needs time and sudden inspiration(灵感)to find out how to start the lesson. One day, when I took my daughter out to play, she asked me for one coin to sit on the rocking chair. At that time, I had an idea to start the lesson by using a coin, for there’s a key sentence in the text, “Every coin has two sides.” Therefore, I believe that the students could concentrate on learning the lesson.
2.4 The way to close the lesson:
To close a lesson is also very important. Whenever I design a new lesson, I am used to thinking about how to close the lesson carefully. For there’s a key sentence “Every coin has two sides”, I expected that the students could know that a lot of things have advantages and disadvantages, and they are the same. They certainly have their strong points and weak points, once they can make full use of their strong points, they are surely to become better and better. This step sometimes equals to achieve students’ moral aim. I do believe that it’s more important to teach the students to have affection on English rather than teaching grammatical knowledge.
2.5 Students’ Role in class
The students’ activities in class play a vital role in every lesson, for the final aim of teaching is to get the students know and learn something instead of the teacher.
2.6 Teaching tools to use : PPT, Multi-media
Part 3: Teaching Procedures
3.1 Outline of the teaching procedures:
3.2 Detailed Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in & Teaching Aims
Teacher’s activity 1 (in class) | Show a coin to the students, and ask two questions: How many sides does the coin have? Let students guess what they are going to learn. Show the teaching aims |
Students’ activity 1 (in class) | Answer the question: two sides. Answer the second question: the Internet Know what they are going to learn. |
Something unexpected(in class) | One student answered: three sides and he showed the “ third side” by standing the coin. All the rest students were so surprised that they showed their greater interest |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | Although the student gave the wrong answer, I appreciated his idea and explained to him why he was wrong. The third side is not a surface, but a point. |
Step 2 A Survey
Table 1 Is the Internet good or bad? (The survey)
| Group A (Good ) | Group B (Bad) |
Number of the members | 15 | 19 |
Reasons (they can use some set phrases or expressions | Listen to music, relax, Read e-books, Chat with friends Shop online
| Bad for eyes Unhealthy ads Easy to get angry
|
Teacher’s activity 2 (in class) | Organize the survey and raise 2questions Is the Internet good or bad? Why is it good/ bad? |
Students’ activity 2 (in class) | Choose “good” or “bad” Support their opinions |
Something unexpected(in class) | More than half of them thought that the Internet was not good, and a fierce “argument” began. The students gave a lot of unexpected answers: shop online, chat with friends; write some programs; read books |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | This step intends to let students begin to solve the real problem. The students gave more reasons than I expected, which proved that they really used their mind and imagination. |
Step 3 Text Framework & Chunk Framework (pair-work)
Teacher’s activity 3 (in class) | 1.Guide students to finish table 2 in pairs 2.Guide students to get the main idea of each paragraph 3.Guide students to go over the main content of the text with their books closed (use chunks) |
Students’ activity 3 (in class) | Task 1 get the main idea of the text(Table 2) Task 2 find the structure of the text (Diagram 1) This task intends to guide students to know how to compose the structure while writing a passage. Task 3 check the main opinions of the text with chunks(Diagram 2) |
Something unexpected(in class) | Task 1 was easy for the students to complete, however, they had some difficulty in finding out the key sentences in each paragraph. |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | Guide students to practice using their own words to express themselves and be creative! |
Table 2 Advantages & Disadvantages of the Internet (Main idea of the text)
Advantages of the Internet | Disadvantages of the Internet |
Make life easier and simpler
|
|
Diagram 1 Text Structure

Good or Bad?
Diagram 2 Chunk Framework
Step 4 A Debate & Extension (Group-work)
Group A: The Internet is good. V.S. Group B: The Internet is bad.
Teacher’s activity 4 (in class) | Organize the debate (Group A & Group B) Show the example: I think that the Internet is good for us, because it can make our life easier and simpler…(at least three sentences) Explain the requirements of the debate: one student only has one chance to express himself/ herself, and they are supposed to use a complete sentence instead of a phrase or a word. They are encouraged to use the chunks they have learned in this class. |
Students’ activity 4 (in class) | Form teams according to their opinions, those who believe the Internet is good for us form Group A, while those who believe the Internet is bad form Group B Have a Debate The creative answers are welcomed and appreciated |
Something unexpected(in class) | I didn’t expect the debate would be so heated and fierce. Some students even write their opinions down on their exercise books in order not to forget what they would say. |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | It’s important to arouse students’ interest in learning, and the problems in class should be those they are interested in. However, the time was so limited that some students had no time to show their opinions. |
Step 5 A Summary
Teacher’s activity 5 (in class) | Show the coin again and stress the key opinion: Every coin has two sides. SO ARE YOU. You have strong points and weak points. Once you can make full use of your strong points and improve weak points, you are certainly to make greater progress. |
Students’ activity5 (in class) | Remember the main idea of the text, try to identify their strong points and weak points, and build confidence in learning. |
Something unexpected(in class) | Some students came to me to express their opinions on the Internet |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | It’s easy for the students to remember the sentence by using the coin, and the lesson made them think actively, and I think it has achieved what I hadn’t expected. I felt very happy after giving this lesson, and I really appreciated the students’ support and cooperation. |
Step 6 Homework
Teacher’s activity 6 (in class) | Leave homework to the students (write a short passage on the Internet) Correct their compositions
|
Students’ activity 6 (after class) | Write a passage about the advantages and disadvantage of the Internet with the chunks learned in class.( Underline the chunks learned in class, and use at least 5 chunks) |
Something unexpected(in class) | Quite a lot of student used the sentence “Every coin has two sides”, and they had a clear clue of their writing. Some students’ compositions seldom had any mistakes. |
Solution / Reflection (in/ after class) | The students had some difficulty in using the conjunctions, such as, however, instead, therefore, then and so on. |
(Note: teacher’s activities are in bold and italic type, while students’ activities are in bold.)
3.3 Blackboard Design:
- The Internet
Key points:
- get…done
- aside from
- take up
- be harmful to
- Every coin has two sides.
Part 4: Teaching Reflection
I do believe that the students have learned something meaningful from this lesson. They began to know how to analyze and solve problems exactly, and they got to know the importance of cooperation with the teacher and other students.
4.1 Strong points:
4.1.1 This lesson is student-centered, which tries to make students the master of the class.
4.1.2 The whole class is carried out in English, and it ensures the students to have a suitable atmosphere to learn English.
4.1.3 Quite a number of students can concentrate on the lesson, and they could finish all the tasks I have designed correctly and happily.
4.1.4 The students are allowed and encouraged to have their own ideas. Whenever they have given something different, I would appreciate it.
4.1.5 The students are free to form their own teams, in this way, they are more willing to express themselves in their team.
4.1.6 As teachers, very often, we may meet something unexpected in class; therefore, it’s necessary for us to develop our teaching intelligence. It’s better to encourage the students to have their own opinions rather than just one opinion. Creativity and suitable imagination are appreciated in my class.
4.1.7 The students are inspired to search more information after class.
4.2 Weak points:
4.2.1 However, since the time was so limited that I haven’t given those shy students enough chance to show their opinions.
4.2.2 Besides, my skill of making PPT is supposed to be improved. For once I have mastered this skill; it may help me make my class more lively and interesting!
4.2.3 It’s a pity to have no time to let students write their opinion down when they are having a debate.
4.3 Solution:
4.3.1 Try to give those shy students more chances to show them, which may help them have interest in learning English.
4.3.2 Try to improve my skill of making PPT, since it can get the students to better understand the text.
4.3.3 Pay more attention to students’ writing, for a few of them are weak in writing. Besides, I will try my best to do some research on the subject of Ms. Liu’s Workshop (A practical research on how to use chunks to improve Junior students’ writing skill如何运用语块提高初中生写作水平的实践研究)
