Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.
~Ruth Carter Stapleton
I didn’t have a plan. And that was painful. It was Christmas Day, our first in California after having moved from Austria due to my husband’s work, and we had no family to share it with. We hadn’t met enough people yet to invite them for dinner. We thought about Christmas back home in Austria, with the magical fragrance of fresh cookies in the air, snow blanketing everything outside in silence and the mysterious anticipation about what the Christkind (the Austrian version of Santa) would bring this year.
Typically there had always been lots of presents. Not because we parents overwhelmed the kids with them, but simply because many people came together that day and everybody wanted to give something. That certainly wouldn’t be the case this year because we hadn’t made enough contacts yet. Of course we had been exchanging good wishes in the days and weeks leading up to the big day, but on Christmas Day itself? That would surely be a family affair; a day when people would withdraw to enjoy privacy with their own loved ones!
But that is not what happened on this day! Somebody must have sensed our situation and thought about how they could put a smile on our faces that day. They must have wondered what the best time would be, how old each of our children was, and what would give them the most joy. And they had also decided that it would be a complete surprise and they would remain anonymous.
We were just about to open the presents when a loud whoopof excitement went through the house. Ten-year-old Esther had just opened the front door and couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Right in front of her was a pile of presents as tall as she was! Every single one of them beautifully wrapped in green, red and gold! She looked at each of them from the bottom of the pile to the top and then, stretching up, she discovered a note way up on top. A Santa Claus was drawn on it along with a message: For the three Austrian girls! Have a wonderful Christmas!
The others ran quickly to see what was going on and couldn’t believe their eyes. A small present would have been “realistic” but such a high pile? They had never seen anything like it in their entire lives! What a surprise!
The rest of the day was saved and not just that, the entire Christmas holiday was marvelous. It turned out that our three girls had received many, many board games. They were not new, as our experienced parents’ eyes quickly detected. But somebody must have thought of us and knew how much joy these gifts would bring us. And this somebody took the effort to pick a special occasion, wrap each present individually, and add a personal note. The timing of the gift and the loving wrapping were worth so much more than money! A pure act of thinking about us without even expecting a thank-you.
Our kids tried of course to guess who the presents were from but they just could not work it out, so they drew a huge picture of Santa Claus with chalk in the middle of the street with the words “Thank you Santa!” As it doesn’t rain very often in California the picture stayed there for a long time and I am wondering how often the picture must have put a smile on the face of our mysterious giver!
Later that day a neighbor dropped by and gave each of the girls a ten-dollar voucher for a local bookshop.
It wasn’t the financial value that made that Christmas so special. In fact it was probably the lowest-cost Christmas that we had ever had as a family. And yet it was the most valuable in many ways, especially for me as a mother. I was given many presents that day that had nothing to do with money: There was the gift of not having to manage a beautiful feast and yet see a wonderful outcome. The gift of being given so much without the expectancy of having to give anything in return. The gift of getting a present totally unexpected, far away from home. The gift of being made part of a community. It was a real feast of love, of unearned love.
Did I ever find out who played Santa Claus for us that day? Maybe, but that is a different story….

A Christmas Tree for Mrs.Mueller
The black-and-white photograph of Mrs.Mueller that I took pictured her seated on the sofa in our living room, smiling shyly.Mrs.Mueller was our next—door neighbor when my sister and I were growing up.
We got to know her after her husband died. She didn’t have children of her own and no relatives that we knew of.She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
Early one December, Mrs.Mueller went into the hospital.Laurel and I were busy making Christmas presents, and we pondered (思考) what to make for Mrs.Mueller.She would be coming home a few days before Christmas to an empty house with no holiday decorations. We lit upon the idea of decorating a small tree that would greet her with lights and cheer. We were wondering how to carry out our plan when the answer appeared
I was in Miss O’Keefe’s sixth grade class that year, and we had decorated a small tree with paper-link chains and ornaments (装饰品) we’d made in art class. It was beautiful.Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before Christmas vacation.
Miss O’Keefe said there would be a drawing (抽签) for the tree. We’d each write our name on a piece of paper and put it through the slot (窄缝) in the shoebox she had decorated. On the last day of school before vacation, she’d draw a name from the box, and that student could take home the tree.
As I put the folded piece of paper with my name “Holly Wheeler” into the box, I was beside myself with excitement, hoping I could be the lucky dog.My mother pointed out there were 30 children who might win the tree, but I was certain I would get it because our purpose was good: We wanted to make Mrs.Mueller happy.
