The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.
~H.W. Beecher
My hand trembled as I answered the phone call that would change my life forever. “Jill, this is the doctor’s office. I’m sorry to tell you that your procedure was not a success. You are not pregnant.”
I could feel the blood drain from my face. All my dreams of becoming a mother came crashing down around me. Fred and I had tried to get pregnant for three years, with no success. In-vitro was our last hope, and now all the surgery and treatments were for naught. All I ever wanted was to be a mother, and now that wasn’t going to happen.
I felt like a failure.
I wanted to cry my eyes out, but I was in the middle of a big box store, shopping with my mom.
As soon as I ended the call, my mom looked over at me questioningly.
“Oh, Mom,” I cried. “The in-vitro didn’t work. I’m not pregnant.”
She hurried over to me and gave me a hug. “It’s okay,” she said. “You can try again.”
I leaned into her. “No, Mom, we can’t try again.” My voice broke. “We’ve spent all the savings we had. I’ll never be a mom. The dream is dead.” We stood there for a few seconds, letting my words sink in.
When the teacher would ask the class what they wanted to be when they grew up, I was the one kid in the class who wanted to be a mom. I wanted to be the type of mom who played with her kids outside. A mom who would spend one-on-one time with them, asking about their day. A mom who would teach them to read. A mom who would love them and give them all the skills they needed to be the best they could be. I wanted to be like my mom.
Then Mom said the words that still stay with me today. She said, “It’s not the end of the world.”
I looked at her in shock. She had six kids! My friends all wanted to have a mom like her. Standing before me was the epitome of motherhood, and she was telling me it wasn’t the end of the world? It was her world!
“I always wanted to be a schoolteacher, ever since I was a little girl,” she explained patiently. “I didn’t want to get married and have kids. I wanted to teach kids. That was my dream. Then, when I met your dad and got married, the dream of teaching school was gone. My life is very different than I imagined it would be.” Mom grabbed my hand. “Your life will be different than you imagined it. Not better or worse, but different. You still have a purpose and a path to travel. So travel it.”
I thought about Mom’s words of wisdom for the next few weeks. If my dream of having children was over, what purpose did my life have? What was in my future?
That’s when I started to volunteer, and my purpose became clearer. Perhaps I didn’t have children to love and nurture, but I had seniors in the seniors’ residence who needed a friendly visitor. I had cats and kittens in my neighbourhood shelter who needed me to love them, care for them and find them homes. I also had children’s groups that would come into a museum where I volunteered so I could teach them about history. Was it the same as having my own children? No, but in the process of healing and moving forward in my life, I was making a difference in other people’s lives. In turn, I was growing and learning and creating a different path on which to travel.
My life has been very different and, thankfully, very fulfilling. I often wonder if I would have come to this epiphany about life without Mom’s wisdom. Would I have continually mourned the loss of a dream, and by doing so, hurt my marriage and the people around me? I’ll never know because I was blessed with having a wise, loving person in my life who put aside her dream of becoming a schoolteacher to be my mom.

“You have to be an instrument that you’re playing. Why aren’t you able to do it?” Emily’s father said to her, advising her to learn to play the piano. From time to time, her mother would show the wish that Emily could develop her ability to perform on the stage. It seemed that the whole family was pushing her to play music.Every time this happened, it was a massive pain for her.Emily felt that she wasn’t part of her family. It was her dream to become just like the rest of them. However, no matter how hard she tried, she was unable to.
“Being different doesn’t mean that you aren’t blessed with any potential or talent,” said Sarah, a teacher of Emily.“Maybe there is something interesting that I can do,” Emily thought.Every evening, Emily spent time sketching or drawing and painting in her bedroom. Her paintings showed her father on the piano and her brother on the Cello as well as her mother performing on the stage. Her paintings were vivid and the emotions were real. The paintings revealed how much her family was devoted to music. The paintings also revealed the things Emily was skilled at.
But her family did not even know. The only thing they knew was that Emily was unable to sing and play one musical instrument. And they weren’t happy with her at all.Emily was a lover of her loved ones, and she loved them dearly. She wanted to be the pride of the family someday. How could this happen when she wasn’t able to do what they asked her to accomplish?
