Pasta and pizza were on everyone’s lunch menu in my native land of Italy. Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian. A few years later, my family moved to the US. As I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in New York, I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse (各种 各样) as the students. In front of me were a variety of foods I couldn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I would pick out something awful, I tried badly to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation. Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago, the lessons I learned will stick in my mind forever. For the past three summers, I have worked in a government department in New York. New immigrants (移民) — much like the little girl in the lunch line — flooded our office asking for help. I often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones. As I served the role of vital communication link, I was reminded of my struggle to communicate before I learned English. I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people who did not speak the language. It suddenly became very clear to me how lucky I was to be fluent in two languages.
In New York, a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a diverse population. In my English to Italian translations, I’ve learned about social programs that I didn’t know existed. This work expanded my mind in ways that are impossible inside the four walls of a classroom. Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused by this city’s sounds and smells. Instead, I enjoy its diversity.
24. What did the author realize after entering school in New York?
A. Time passed quickly. B. English was hard to learn.
C. The food was terrible. D. People were very different.
25. Who does “the little girl” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. An Italian teacher. B. A government official.
C. The author herself. D. The author’s classmate.
26. How did the summer job benefit the author?
A. It strengthened her love for school. B. It helped sharpen her sense of direction.
C. It opened her eyes to the real world. D. It made her childhood dream come true.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. English and Italian, Worlds Apart
B. It Takes All Sorts to Make a World
C. Pasta and Pizza, All the Same to Me
D. Don’t Judge People by Their Appearance
C
Seth Magle is an urban (城市的) ecologist in Chicago. In 2021, he started building a network of fellow urban animal lovers from around the world. They’re working to collect information so that it can be compared in different cities. With the goal of trying to create more wildlife inclusive (包容) cities, the network helps reduce human wildlife conflict (冲突) and increase human wildlife coexistence in the urbanizing areas.
In Chicago, Magle and his team have been watching their city’s wildlife for about 10 years. All together, they have over 100 camera traps set up across different types of urban environments from the downtown Loop and city parks to nature preserves and suburb (郊区) golf courses.
During times of recent extreme heat, we do definitely see animals reduce movement and just stay where they are. It’s probably energetically difficult to move around when it’s so hot.
Although this works for a short term (短期) in high temperature, it’s not good enough over a longer period because it means less time to search for food or a new mate.
As Magle and his network of urban researchers look to the future and climate change, they predict bigger shifts. Temperatures everywhere are expected to warm, so wildlife in urban settings and beyond will likely have to move their normal habitats a bit further north to where it feels more comfortable and to what they’re already used to. We don’t have armadillos in Chicago, but we have them in the southern part of the US. And they seem to be migrating (迁徙) north.
Only time will tell how our urban wildlife reacts to these longer-term shifts in temperature.
For now, it sounds like urban animals — so long as they’re healthy — are totally capable of handling a few days ofextreme heat here and there.
28. What is the aim of the network?
A. To observe wildlife in different cities. B. To compare animals’ living conditions.
C. To collect information of animal lovers. D. To help human and wildlife coexist.
29. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. The location of the camera traps. B. The movement of urban animals.
C. The way of observing urban wildlife. D. The time of building the network.
30. What are urban animals likely to do as a long-term way to escape extreme heat?
A. Limit where they go. B. Move about in the city.
C. Shift to the north. D. Look for shade everywhere.
31. From which is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A popular science magazine.
C. A biology textbook. D. A social research report.
D
Asia’s architectural treasures, from a Buddhist monastery in Afghanistan to an ancient city in China, are under threat due to economic development, poor technical resources, war and tourism, according to experts.
The Global Heritage Fund named 10 sites facing the loss and destruction impossible to recover. “These 10 sites represent only a small part of the endangered treasures across Asia and the rest of the developing world,” Jeff Morgan, executive director of the fund, said.
“We’re looking at these ancient civilizations leaping into the 21st century at a kind of pace that is unheard of.” said Vishakha N. Desai, president of the Asia Society, which hosted a conference based on the report. He mentioned the pressures of rapidly modernizing Asia on the architectural treasures.
Kuanghan Li, head of Global Heritage Fund’s China program, underlined the importance in a presentation on work to preserve Pingyao, one of China’s last existing walled cities. “But up to 20 years ago, there were hundreds of similar walled cities left in China.” she said. “The majority of them have been destroyed.”
Experts said that global architectural preservation efforts are poorly balanced and targeted, with the UN cultural body UNESCO focusing almost entirely on sites in already rich European countries, rather than in places like Latin America or Asia. More than 80 percent of UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in the 10 richest states, the Global Heritage Fund said.
Elsewhere, “Heritage is being undervalued.” Morgan said, warning that the endangered sites were sure to vanish without quick help. “We’re going to lose them on our watch in the next 10 years.”
32. Which word can best describe Jeff Morgan’s attitude to Asia’s architectural treasures?
A. Uninterested. B. Concerned. C. Satisfied. D. Unclear.
33. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning Pingyao in Paragraph 4?
A. To praise the efforts by the Global Heritage Fund.
B. To explain China’s process of heritage preservation.
C. To show China’s unique role in protecting the world heritage.
D. To stress the need for quick action on heritage protection.
34. According to the Fund, UNESCO should ________.
A. try its best to stop funding rich European states
B. To explain China’s process of heritage preservation.
C. To show China’s unique role in protecting the world heritage.
D. To stress the need for quick action on heritage protection.
35. What does the underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. Disappear. B. Revive. C. Adapt. D. Exist.
